I am massively up for this one ......... anybody speak italian to book the tickets?!!............
It's a festival, but damned if I can find anything in that area on July 2nd? Turin does seem to host rather a LOT of festivals per year though!

My money's on the Traffic Free Festival, because that's the only festival I can find in Turin at that time...

Uhm, yeah, it might be this, it's also an important festival as Iggy Pop played last year, so New Order could play this year... I hope it's this one so we won't have problems getting tickets, it must be one of those free festivals entirely sponsored by the city councils... I'm really happy this is gonna happen, though I won't believe it until I have more news... this year I was afraid I'd have missed seeing New Order live because I have no money to go to England, but it would be great luck if they came in Turin, only 3 hours of train away from my town! :) The only problem of this site is it's totally outdated, nothing else other than the dates of this year, everything else is about last year! Please post info as soon as you know it, I'll try some research but getting news about gigs in advance is a nightmare in Italy...

How big is Turin? Will finding a cheap (ish) hotel be a problem?
Heard a friend of mine today who went last year and she confirmed it's a free festival. Turin is a huge city, the second city of northern Italy. I guess it's the nearer you get to Manchester, a very grey and sad industrial city, now in decay because of the decline of the most important factories. There's also some sort of alternative music scene, mostly of the electronic-reggae-dub-drum'n'bass genre rather than rock. Subsonica, who played last year, are a great band. Other bands to check are Africa Unite and Marlene Kuntz, who come from Cuneo, in the same region, and are the most important band in Italy, sort of Joy Division updated through Sonic Youth, Pixies, Nirvana and Radiohead. Turin should be about 4,000,000 residents, it's the city of FIAT cars and Juventus football team, owned by the same family. There are a couple of monuments but it's definitely not a tourist city, though the museum of ancient Egypt is interesting... the Alps surrounding the city are really beautiful of course. Finding a hotel shouldn't be too difficult, I recommend this site I use myself: http://www.soloalberghi.com/index.php (also in English and other languages). The festival should happen in a park or another place within the city, so once you get in Turin you shouldn't have problems. Still be cautious, it's not the easiest city, keep your eyes open, there's quite some small crime around. Those of you who visited cities in southern France like Marseille and Nice (hoping to spell them correctly) might get an idea... Don't bring too much money with you and bring the cheaper camera...
Okey dokey, so a flight to Turin on the Friday from London and then returning again on the Sunday costs about 80 quid all-in (including taxes) via EasyJet...
Anyone found anything cheaper?

The legendary punk-new wave Italian band CCCP are strongly rumoured to reunite for the first time after 15 years, for one concert only at the Traffic festival in Turin. If you can see them, don't miss this opportunity! CCCP were one of the most inventive punk bands, the attitude was punk but the sound was also influenced by post punk and had often a devastating impact. One of the top three new wave bands in the 80s, they split at the end of the decade. Some of them formed a new band called CSI (more melodic, experimental and mature at the same time, though basically still new wave) and a record label called CPI which was the most important alternative record company of the 90s, launching bands like Marlene Kuntz, still the most important rock band here, and other bands like Divine (sort of Bjork meets Dubstar) who didn't enjoy all the success they'd have deserved. It was a very exciting scene (every week there were two or three great concerts in your area and new bands, including mine, were forming everywhere to try to catch the moment) which wasn't too different from Factory and I still believe our mid 90s were better than the British mid 90s... At the end of the decade the band split and the record label closed, but again some of the members formed a new band called PGR, but this time the band is not as good or influential as the previous two incarnations... I've seen CSI live many times and in rare evnts they played a couple of CCCP songs and I can say it's an amazing live experience, a bit like seeing the Pixies or New Order do Joy Division songs. Former members say this reunion is very likely to happen, so if it does, don't miss it...

When I looked a couple of days ago Saturday-Sunday from Luton was 70 notes, Saturday-Monday was 35.
Glad I didn't book though, am going via Belgium now, obviously!
I admit I'm a bit worried about this concert...
Unfortunately New Order in Italy haven't ever enjoyed much success from the kind of people who go at concerts... they're mostly fond of Joy Division and still judge New Order as disco whores betraying the original sound of the band and not able to do anything decent without Ian...
They're just fookin retarded depressed Goths.

The alternative press is to blame, they almost never respected New Order, the only positive review was for Get Ready because it was perceived as a return to a sound more similar to Joy Division... the first reactions about this album aren't very good, only a few defend it, for the most of the people it's meaningless pop...
I'm worried about a cold reaction, especially if this punk band will play in the same day, there won't be many people open minded enough to like New Order's different sound.
They better start with a couple of songs by Joy Division, that could make the audience remember who they are and carry on the respect necessary to tolerate the most electronic numbers...
If they start with Jetstream or Guilt, the show is virtually over...
I know there are a lot of New Order fans like me too, but I don't know how many of them will come to the gig...
I'll bring a bazooka and shoot every fookin cunt who dares to boo them... ;)
I'm happy if some of you come, we must definitely meet and concentrate on the same place in front of the stage to make some noise to support the band, they'll need us...
Don't worry too much there'll probably be quite a healthy brit contingent, return of the self preservation society.

808 State should also be there, and possibly one other singer from Manchester (think wooly hat! :D ). AFAIK, I think that the bands are waiting for the contracts to be signed, before they announce it as official...
But, yes, there should be quite a few of us Brits there, and I, for one, have always loved Italy, so it should be good!

Traffic Turin Free Festival - II Edition from June 29 to July 2 in Turin
with New Order's Exclusive Italian Date (July 2)

After the success of the first edition, Turin will be again protagonist of an event unique for its features and totally free, which means to place the city at the centre of the contemporary youth culture: Traffic Turin Free Festival, from Wednesday June 29 to Saturday July 2 (for info to the general audience: 800015475 - http://www.trafficfestival.com).
The artistic direction is by Max Casacci from Subsonica, Fabrizio Gargarone (director of the legendary venue Hiroshima Mon Amour), Alberto Campo (music journalist from Repubblica and director of Rumore) and Cosimo Ammendolia (director of Suoneria and Radar/Metropolis).
Amongst the exclusive events in the bill there is a day dedicated to the musical scene of Manchester which will peak with the concert by New Order, Saturday July 2 on the stage at Parco Della Pellerina.
A feature of Traffic Turin Free Festival is to twin the city each year with another city after social, economic and cultural reasons. In the first edition Detroit was chosen, as Turin an industrial city transforming also through its vital music scene. The same can be said for Manchester, where music has had an essential role in its postindustrial growth. The idea is to represent whithin a day the crucial period began at the end of the Seventies, straight after punk (Joy Division, from which came New Order, invited to play live on the festival main stage on Saturday July 2, only Italian date of the current world tour) through the scene at the end of the Eighties called Madchester (represented by techno pioneers 808 State, by former Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder and Hacienda DJs Mike Pickering and Graeme Parks, all present in the day in different performances). Protagonist and witness of the entire story, and as such invited to be the master of ceremony, is Tony Wilson, founder of Factory Records and the Hacienda. A charachter of which the story has been told by Michael Winterbottom in the movie 24 Hour Party People, which will be premiered in a national preview in the afternoon of July 2 at The Cinema Museum.
Opening the festival, in the evening of June 29, will be the only performance in the whole continental Europe of Throbbing Gristle: legendary group founder of the industrial genre (it's not by chance that the scene of this performance is the area of the Limone Foundry in Moncalieri, one of the biggest postindustrial areas in the city), for this event with the support of extraordinary DJs (Martin Gore from Depeche Mode and Peaches) and of the concert of Pansonic from Finland.
This year the events of Traffic will happen again in representative places of the city: Parco Della Pellerina, Murazzi Del Po, Spazio 211, Fonderie Limone, Cinema Massimo... The Traffic Turin Free Festival, in collaboration with the City of Turin and the Region of Piemonte, is sponsored by Telecom Italia.

Does it ever end? A big TG fan (that's the blue TG flash on the right shoulder of my avatar) but I'd have expected a Psychic TV reunion to have been more popular. PTV had almost as much influence as NO on bringing rock and electronica togther.
I'd love to see TG again, but I'm not expecting a rapturous response.
I assume that "only show in continental Europe" means they're playing more in the UK, not the States?

Well, PTV are back as well, as PTV3. They'll be playing at Birmingham on July 7. They're even back in the studio, all the updates are on Gen's website (http://www.genesisp-orridge.com). I agree that the Throbbing Gristle rereunion is a bit silly.
Also, from a comment from Gen in his blog: "We are all heartbroken. S/he will even miss playing with Iggy in Barcelona, and meeting me old Mancunian friends New Order..."

I think that the Throbbing Gristle performance, in a former foundry, supported by a DJ set by Martin Gore, will be a great event too.

Do you know of any decent hotels to stay in Turin on those dates, as it sounds as though Turin could be pretty packed over those dates, so a hotel booking is in order! :)

I don't know any hotel in Turin, but I know where I'll search. I've always used http://www.soloalberghi.com/index.php, a very extensive hotel directory (also in English), with a lot of info and, when possible, links to the sites of the hotels (of all kinds). I've never been disappointed. It's not that they list only good hotels, beware (they list crap hotels as well), but if you look enough they give you info enough to let you make the right choice. Once again, Turin is not a safe city, the area of the park where New Order will play is not safe at all, so be always very careful, though I don't think it's more dangerous than some suburbs in Paris... I am going to be in Milan for the summer, so this is great news. Would love to get together with other fans for the show. Anybody interested? Briant
