All Joy Division sets: Yes or No?!

i am a new order fan first. i would appreciate it if they actually gave the JD songs a rest and started to revive some more new order songs. as to them playing a whole set of jd numbers, well i don't know. how would you know except on the actual night. if it is a choice of seening the order do jd, or not at all, i probably would still go. i am speaking hypothecticly, as it is not as though i will get to see them anytime soon again.

I'm sick of this JD covering thing. the only one i like and enjoy is Isolation from Reading 98.

2005 was a good excuse to indulge in nostalgia cos it was 25 years since Ian and Joy Division died. But this is 2006 and New Order should concentrate on New Order.

She's Lost Control used to be an intense song but now it just plods along, with random yelling and shouts, while Steve's drumming just aint what it used to be. Same applies to Shadowplay.

They should rotate Transmission, Isolation, and Warsaw around the encores at certain gigs, and ditch LWTUA, Atmosphere and Shadowplay altogether.

Everyone would prefer songs like Run, Sunrise, Age of Consent, Perfect Kiss, Your Silent Face to the same old JD massacres.

I think we need some sort of massive petition, really. Signage at the MvC could help. A horde of fans holding up "Hurt for '06" could do wonders. Or so I can hope.

I worry what Hurt would sound like played off tape, and performed by nice modern gear, I love Hurt more the more raw the version is. Barney's little TPK pastiche at Apollo14 was THE musical highlight of my life, I tried to sing Hooky's bassline over it, but tears choked me up. If they played Hurt (and didn;t cunt it up) I think every atom in my body may simultaneously turn to energy killing all in this hemisphere.

No!!! The all jd set at QEH was a surprise (when bernard said we're new order but we're only playing jd songs, I was shocked!!) But it turned out to be one of my favourite n o gigs. But it was a one off (or so I thought)... Enough, if they want to play jd songs then perform as jd. I love new order more and long for old classics like TPK, AOC, LMO, STYT, Face up (the list goes on)to be played...

But anything is better than nothing...

I'm all for it. I think the material stands up, they play them well and it's a shameless nostalgia trip to hear 3/4 of the best band ever play the best material ever. I can't agree with the comments that Steve's drumming isn't what it was - he was absolutely on FIRE at Brixton.

Given the choice of hearing them play ANYTHING, I'd go for a mix of JD, Movement-era stuff and some other stuff that's not been played for ages like Lonesome Tonight, AoC, Leave Me Alone. But that won't happen, so if the choice is between 'greatest hits' yet again and a JD set, I'm up for the latter. Of course it's not the same as JD in 79/80 - it's what it is - New Order in 2006 playing great material that is still powerful and moving.

I reckon there will be some surprises on Sat too.

It won't kill anybody to have to listen to some full Joy Division sets. You can't deny their history. It's still a part of who they are, and if they want to play Joy Division songs, all the power to them.

Plus, they cant do them properly. At the moment, its just some middle aged guys rolling through some songs. I could deliver a better vocal version of atmosphere than Bernard does, such is the lack of intensity.

high intensity stuff. i dont think people should get hung up about jdno sets. i just want to see them play and whether its jd or no i dont care cos i know it will be fantastic. the hotel manager has assured me the room will be full of booze so will be right there for the bands. go for the crack

I think we should all be very grateful that they're still out there performing live. It's great that they are able to play anything from their fantastic legacy of effectively being two separate bands. I cannot think of any other act that have that to draw on. Am happy to hear Shadowplay or anything else. Perhaps not Rock the Shack though.

The 'New Order Thing' is whatever they want it to be, continuously evolving. At this point they want to do some JD songs - fine! There was never a plan - that's part of why they're great.

Well yes, they *are* middle aged, you're right there. If they roll through anything on autopilot these days it's Blue Monday, not the JD stuff. Looking at Hooky's face during Warsaw at Brixton, there was no way he was 'rolling through' the song. That was fucking intense. And you know, I think Barney feels the same way - unfortunately with him, it can come out in a series of whoops and 'come-on's. I think it's because he's never been a natural frontman and it can seem forced. He sort of mixes up what's required to whip up a festival crowd with what it takes to blast out an old JD number. It's a measure of, even after all these years, how uncertain he is as a performer. But all that said, I love the fact that these songs are being performed again.

Yes and no really... Despite having 'followed' NO for nearly 20 years, I have never seen them play live, and obviously never saw JD play, so an all JD set would be good and I wouldn't have anything to compare it against,and the 'NO greatest hits' set would be fantastic as well, but I can see how those who go to every gig or who have seen them a lot over the years would want something a bit different occasionally and would like to see /hear some different tracks given a go... and done with a suitable intensity, etc., BUT, as several people have said, the band have never really given a fuck what anyone else thinks, so why change now... We all have our own ideal set list, but that ain't necessarily gonna agree with what the band themselves want to do... I'm just thankful that I still have the chance to see them, but I'm sure when I do finally get along to a few gigs, I will also be campaigning for more variety and for them to dust off Cries And Whispers or something...

NO !! Its always nice to think along linear lines - JD starts, JD stops, NO starts and continues. whereas sometimes things are more organic and 3 dimensional. However, to go back to JD is regressive and lazy. Barney just cant do JD songs justice, I think NO's back catalogue is so big now they should concentrate on older or less familiar tracks in an encore for example rather than do JD songs. Its a bit morbid and cheap. In a similar fashion has anyone really accepted Phil Cunningham as a part of New Order yet? I think the biggest criticism of the recent manchester appolo gig was a lack of keyboards. WFTSC - NO's best song since Regret, was ruined by a lack of keyboards. Some things are best left in the past (a bit like ringing up old girlfriends to see if the magic is there. It isnt - they have got fat & ugly have 3 kids and married a loser)

Steve does a good job on LWTUA, Transmission and Atmosphere but She's Lost Control is too slow for me, while Shadowplay's drum pattern has been replaced by a standard beat, as someone said earlier.

Given the choice between NO playing JD or no NO I would of course see them. But they should pick their songs and their moments carefully and remember that people have come to see New Order.

They don't care anymore! Well maybe Hooky does. I suppose we are lucky that they are still doing any gigs, we know Bernard doesn't like doing them, so I suppose it is a bit much to expect them to put some effort in!
