As a result of a prvious thread the pope put it to me to start this poll. Both Barney and Ian have a very interesting dance. I always claim Barney to be my dance teacher. :) is that for e?

Don't bother. No one would ever see it in the polls page.

New Order polls can be here.. just don't abuse it...
We had people entering 20 polls on the same night a few times.. that was annoying (first one to do it was... Almanso!!)

Don't we need a "neither, they were/are both shite" option here ?
Ian was trying to mimic an epileptic fit on stage, and boy did he succeed.
Barney is trying to stand up on stage.
I don't think Ian's doing much dancing right about now...
and the question posed says who IS....not was...
so Barney gets my vote, by default...:p
Big ups to Barney for the slow-mo-fart thing. You know the one - one leg in the air, turning slowly while making a goon face.

Yes, the local telephony company has a quite decent search engine in its website.

Yes, the local telephony company has a quite decent search engine in its website.
But of course you don't need to use it, as you have all the number in your head !! ![]()
Ricardo, what about the show of ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN ?

Check this thread: 25th Anniversary Tour. ;)
OPINION ALERT!!!
All you who think Barney's a better dancer are full of shit. From a theatrical perspective, it's the difference between Artaud (JD) and Brecht (NO)...but without the brains of either of them. One draws you into the music, and the other distances you from it. Also, one has some relevance to the music (dead fly) and the other has...well, I suppose some relevance still, but much less (drug-addled fat man).
And them's my dos centavos. Merry hollandaise.
David...chill bro...I sense much anger and hostility...watch it, or you might become the next Darth Vader!!!

Which do you value more, staged theatrics or pure expression?
Ian's dance is more or less connected to the fact he was ill, whereas Barney's meant that he's having a good time (remember, he didn't dance in the early days), so saying Ian was a good dancer would be somewhat macabre. Not that Barney is a good dancer, but his dance has a feel-good element to it. One question: at what exact poind did Ian start doing the Dead Fly, before or after his seizures began ?

So, one could say that, as Ian's health was becoming worse, his dance was becoming better ?

So, one could say that, as Ian's health was becoming worse, his dance was becoming better ? Yes, that is the sad, ironic truth about it. As audiences grew more accustomed to his dance, they grew to expect seizures onstage. Hence, why the lyrics of a song like Atrocity Exhibition (which appeared in mid-1979) are so damn creepy.
Asylums with doors open wide, Where people had pay to see inside, For entertainment they watch his body twist, Behind his eyes he says I still exist.
This is the way, step inside. This is the way, step inside. This is the way, step inside. This is the way, step inside.
In arenas he kills for a prize, Wins a minute to add to his life. But the sickness is drowned by cries for more, Pray to God, make it quick, watch him fall.

maybe she will dance if Stevie asks her too
This stuff about Ian's dancing is interesting. Deborah Curtis wrote that his dancing at a party before they were married was very similar to his eventual on-stage dancing, so it is likely that he believed that was how to dance (:)). Other factors though :
* Ian was known to be interested in the hypnotic trance-dances of Japanese mediums and Shinto religion, and may have been trying to use his dance to draw the viewer in. This may be looking at this with hindsight though, and putting two and two together.
* Ian was obsessed with epilepsy, far before he actually developed epileptic-like symptoms himself. The brain scans he had in 1979 and 1980 proved he did not actually have a recognisable (at the time, research has improved somewhat over the years) form of epilepsy. I am a firm believer that he was triggering the fits he undoubtedly suffered. He had learned how fits surfaced and how to deal with them, and knew that a combination of lighting, dancing and various solvents could trigger an extreme short-term physical reaction. He danced the way he did because it allowed him to have the fits. Once he had begun this though, he was vulnerable to them and couldn't escape them.

Yeah.He took care of a lady who suffered from epilepsy and died a few months later. It seems that she inspired him to write She's Lost Control.

I think she was one of his regular clients when he worked at the DHSS or whatever it was in Macclesfield (or Manchester), rather than his taking care of her. Staff in such an office would see dozens of clients a day.
"It was about a girl who used to come into the centre where Ian worked to try to find work"."She had epilepsy and lost more and more time through it,and then one day she just didn't come in any more.He assumed that she'd found a job,but found out later she'd had a fit and died".

Yeah, what I said, basically.
