What drugs were JoyDivision NewOrder into down through the years. Did any of them result in bad habbits? :smoking:

Apparently, cocaine was used a lot...

Unless Jonathan Scott meant something else when saying there was a lot of white powder backstage...

Barney's done the full range - weed, ecstacy, cocaine etc, even prozac

The rest probably did cocaine and cigarettes, although Hooky doesn't drink so that may extend into his other habits

Hooky doesn't drink? :skeptic:

You mean he was sober on the pics we've seen from Greece? (where they RUN OUT OF BEER!)

Given the time - late 70's - and the social climate I'd have thought speed would've been the drug of choice for aspiring young punksters like Joy Division. Bit of weed possibly, the odd tab. Lots of experimentation with daft substances as well just as Deborah Curtis's book verified (but that's just kids for you).

Can't imagine Joy Division being into charlie - at that age - it wasn't so affordable or readily available, like it is now. Might've done it when they could but wouldn't have thought it the most popular drug in their armoury.

New Order of course: cocaine coming out their fcuking ears. What better way to blow your cash once you've got a nice car and an 'ouse? And plenty of ecstasy at the end of the eighties. Oh, and into the nineties. And just the odd dabble, I'd have thought, in the noughties. Here and there, to be social. With a few nice glasses of Chablis thrown in for good measure. And the odd prozac.

Oh, and I forgot Viagra! :ignore:

I reckon Al's pretty much spot on - though the only one I can really visualise as a full time caner is Barney. Hooky just seems like a beer monster, and somehow I can't imagine Steve wandering around manically after a pill, chewing his face off, with a complete lack of iris... As for Gillian :jawdrop:

Consumption of drugs was quite high. Apparently they put the Mondays to shame. Any bad habits, well Barney has taken to using a tele prompter. :D

Read an interview where he says he doesn't drink. I was surprised. ;)

wasnt there reports of using alot of acid in the early to mid 80s? they probably couldn't afford too much coke until after the mid 80s. then of course esctacy use by the summer of 88. probably some weed at all times, unless theyw ere too fucked up on acid or coke or esctacy.

conjecture of course

Barney said he started smoking draw in the dark days following Ian's death

I noticed the other day that David Gahan is using a tele prompter as well.. however, it's not evident he uses it!

I was having a dig at his impaired memory (possibly/probably drug induced).

Read an old interview with Barney where he said if his kids went into drugs he would prefer it to be weed, and that cocaine has become "a friend for life" for everyone he knew, but to stay away from most others.

LSD and new equipment made Blue Monday and most of PCL possible....or so I've been told

I remember an interview (on the Martin Hannett webpage, I think) wherein Barney said Joy Division used to do a lot of speed during the late-night sessions with Hannett, while Hannett just did heroin.

apparently Gillian´s drug was alcohol. i remember Steve saying that she was the last one to leave the bar! and about the acid. what was that famous phrase that said something as "you don´t know how much a 1/4 of tab could help finishing a song", or something like that! :confused2:

I heard Ian was into Keith Hudson for some time... that would explain some things...

There are a lot of substances listed in all the books I've read on the band, most of which were abused. I'm surprised about the hooky not drinking thing, because I've read interviews where the writer talks about hooky drinking during the interview. One guy couldn't believe hooky showed up many hours late for an interview, carrying a case of heineken, another talked of him drinking two bottles of wine during the interview.

He also guzzles a bottle of beer at one point during Taras, correct?

Hooky gave up smoking a few years back, having not started until he was 35. He also gave up drinking a while back, but has since been known to have the occasional tipple.

Hooky was certainly enjoying a glass of Australian white of some description during the CD signing at Humm Records, Sydney. Reports of his non-drinking are seemingly greatly exaggerated.

Second-hand intel from a model acquaintance said that coke was all over the hotel room in Perth after the 2002 BDO show. Kind of undermined Barney's supposed dedication to a new and healthy 40's lifestyle (all that "jogging and sailing"), but... it was the end of the tour, right! ;)

When New Order toured with Public Image Limited in 1989 John Lydon said, "New Order do more drugs than the bloody Grateful Dead". Surprisingly, aside from alchol and speed, John Lydon is very anti drug.
