Obviously a forum like this is littered with obsessive collectors.. Being somewhat isolated from other trainspotter types, I was wondering what kind of NewOrder collections everyone else harbours.. For instance:

1. How many items (unique) are in your collections, approx?

2. What kind of collection do you have- ie are you anti-bootlegs, do you collect all formats, is it still an active collection, etc.

3. What are the rarest or most valuable items you own?

4. What kind of items are you still looking for?

5. What are your best sources of rarities these days?

1. I have a blue monday 12" with the wrong labels
2. Vinyl and CD. No bootlegs. Mostly singles.
3. Rarest is my true faith remix 12" from 94 or 2x12" remix of world, or transmisson 7". Late at night is pretty rare too.
4. Run on any format and Procession coloured sleeves ( i have red and purple)
5. Internet, some record shops in Sheffield.

Let me clarify question 1:

How many items are there in your collection in total (not including duplicates)?

1.I don't know excactly how much. 2.I used to collect everything with a Factory records catalogue number, but since there are also things like an eggtimer! with a Fac number and even a building(i think the Hacienda) and the Fact that Factory no longer exists it has become hard to find new ones. And of course every NObootleg i can lay my hands on. 3. Dont know 4. Run,the Other Two cd 5. Internet.

Ha! Ha! Patty you had me thinking there a bit. Okay I'll lay my cards on the tabloid... 'every' CD except 'PC&L' and 'Mole Digger'. Obviously, being an avid collector these two are mere blips in the system hopefully remedied this coming Christmas by my best girl. That was funny that though Pat.

Patty the attic is indeed the only place in my house with space enough to store these, never fear, they are all in record boxes and each item is either in a pvc sleeve or in, literally, cotton wool. I do intend to frame the USA Mini-album (12") original at Chrimbo on a particularly proud part of my household... with any luck people may ask me about it. Perhaps that's wishful thinking. I could always ask myself about it and chuckle about the old days with much glee.

Its probably akin to a brag P... but I go into record fairs and laugh at the folk attempting to sell me NO relics. Pah! I think to myself, the 12" of State of our Nation... how dare you sir.

Well, Huntsy-boy, I am impressed to the point of being slightly frightened. I myself own no vinyl, only CD's.

I just received in the mail today a copy of the Japanese Republic, acquired because it contains the two Sabres remixes of Regret, which as you well know is my favorite NO song of all time, apart from a few hundred others.

I've got Movement, Low-life, 1981-1982 EP, and Closer on vinyl, with the True Faith 7 inch and two JD boots also on vinyl (Le Terme and the Effenaar show). Other than that, I got most of the NO albums, the Heart and Soul Box Set, The Warsaw album (great boot leg with shots of Ian and Barney at a London gig), and the Paradiso gig and one of the Russel Club shows. I'd love to get some live shows circa 78-85, encompassing JD and early NO

Don't be frightened Patty. I find it difficult to believe someone would go out of their way to order Sabres Fat and Slow re-mixes of Regrettable Circumstances... total and utter dog do. The only credible version of R is the Fire on my back version by firey jack or the dub cretins or something. I do dig that version, actually I heard it before the original Republican release and fucking hell... well, that frightened me alright. It was only 'after' Republican came out I could play the fireball thing simply because I knew the soulful version was under my belts. Put the Jap. Republican item in your bottom drawer Patty and hope the snails get at it tonight.

T7 the 'early' live shows were the best... its been said before but that was the time they were true originators... unique music. I love to hear them attempting to get their sequencers going and sometimes they even play along with them (not very well). When I get my shit together in the New Year I'm going to bang most of my rare dollops onto CD's so if I'm still alive your welcome to a shot of some old gear. I think I've probably got the lot... which is nice.

Why I might even consider sharing some shit with P man... I know he loves his plaggy ornaments. You can sniff your CD's Pastruty.. I'll enhance the flavour of the room with the original vinyl.... aaahhhhh... that's good.

What live stuff do you have, Huntsy? Run down a list of the gigs, I'd be interested to know..

Well, Huntsy, I haven't heard the Sabertooth Tiger remixes, but you see I'm making every effort to improve my appreciation of Regrow Your Beard.

About my preference for CD's: as I've said before, I don't have a talent for keeping vinyl dustfree; you see I know my limitations.

Did I detect an offer to share somewhere in there, H? That would certainly be most appreciated.

Actually there are piles and piles of dusty non-NO vinyl being stored by me for somebody else in my basement. Sometimes I just go down and sniff.

I respectfully disagree about the slow and low remix of Regret. I think it's very stimulating aurally and we would all be better off if mr.weatherall would remix some new material from our heroes. as for my collection, I have all full lenghth albums on CD (PCL, LL, Technique, Brotherhood on vinyl too) thieves like us 12, BLT 12" x2, BM 12" x2, Murder, Shellshock, Subculture, Perfect Kiss, Fine Time, Round & Round...it's probably easier to list what i don't have.

I enjoy listening to boolegs and have padded my collection with the anthology from Lars. As well as the 60+ shows on offer thru him, i've collected 15 others thru trades.

I really want the first 3 12"'s (Ceremony, Procession, EGG) as for the rest, i have everything from neworder except the 81-82 ep (are the versions of any songs other than Temptation different? if not i have all that material too) and the new remixes of 60MPH and SLY (i'm in no hurry to get those duds)

As I say, I'd need to check my loft for finer details. Most probably got about 50 gigs either on vinyl or cassette... some excellent quality, others a bit shit. New year will see them on CD if only for my own listening pleasure. Really, nothing beats listening to a gig you've forgotten about 20 years on.

Brian one day we'll agree about something, for now we'll yet again lock heads. The slo mixes are wank from my point of view... interesting that your in no rush to get the 60MPH re-mixes yet herald the slow-blo ones as good?.. incidentally Weatheral has more than likely found work behind a bar serving to cats by now.

Your collection seems mighty impressive... nothing beats the USA Mini-Album for ultimate rareity.... I've only ever seen it once (and I bought it), and I've been collecting since '84. The first 3 12" are easier to come by. I'll buy these on your behalf next time I see them and send them to you. The versions on the USA release of the USA album are the same... but the English vinyl is immense if only for the proper sized artwork.

Everything released on vinyl, plus CD copies when I was feeling a bit more flush. All the videos. No DVDs yet.

Around 500 bootleg tapes, including interviews, every JD gig that's available bar Mountford Hall, every NO gig between 1980 and 1989 plus a few since then. If anybody wants any, just holler !

I have a recording of the Stockholm Gig this sunday.

I wonder if the hacienda club christmasflexi is a rarity or not, I actually have it.

Andrew Weatherall is still cutting edge. He currently focuses on glitchy/minimal house and techno and to hear him mix it is a lesson just like the glory days. I appreciate unique electronic music not dull dancefloor crap and i expect the 60MPH single and SLY will be dancefloor oriented. I never bought the ep because I saw it everywhere and never new it was rare. my friend had a copy and sold it to a second hand shop for $1. They used to have multiple copies at the WalMart near my house in rural louisiana. Fortunately, copies are floating about on the net with pricetags below $10 (US). I have the BLT 12" framed and the Shellshock 12" framed near my turntables but the 81-82 ep would make a nice addition. You don't smoke herb do you Huntsman? I think a little might make you appreciate the Slow and Low mix.

I've never been a 'collector' per se but I have every UK 12" and vinyl album release up to the Republican days from Ceremony right thru to Spooky plus the 7" of Procession/EGG and Temptation. Actually the one thing I didn't buy was the USA 1981-82 EP as I had all the records anyway - seems a bit foolish now!

This includes all the stuff like the Salvation soundtrack, Run2, the True Faith with Paradise Remix as a B-Side and Round and Remix and the other additional 12"s they did for the Technophobe release.

Never bothered buying the Best Of and Rest Of and the Getting Things Ready material was the first time I've bought NO stuff on CD only.

Got most of the bootleg tapes of the concerts I've seen (about 20 in all) plus some others from the States and one in Belgie-Belgique where they do an EGG/Temptation 'medley'

Got a couple of quality bootleg posters - the highlight is the one from Tower Ballroom in Brum where the Wonderstuff have done the artwork.

Oh, and I did have a Fac 51 Hacienda pin badge but I lost it!

3. I don't collect items but songs. I didn't collect the vonyls, just bought them as they were available at normal price. I'm only intersting in songs.
4. Nothing particularly apart from good live bootlegs.

Okay, I've got all JD and NO Factory US vinyl, plus PCL on cassette. Almost all UK 12" singles, except for Run 2. Salvation soundtrack. All JD and NO US 7" singles, stock and promos. Not too many UK 7", sorry to say. Taras Schevenko and Here Are The Young Men on BETA (my Sony still works, so I will still use it!). 3 copies of the JD flexi, a Facus 21 badge in blue.

Don't think I have anything extremely rare, but I haven't seen a picture on this site of this one NO poster that I have. It's for the nine minute video of The Perfect Kiss that is a monochrome shot of Gillian's clasping hands, and the poster lists the credits for the video (dir. Demme, dir. of photog. Alekan, etc.), and measures about 24" by 24". There are also a couple of red areas in it to provide some contrast.

Don't really have a place to secure JD/NO goodies, but I do scour every place that I shop for items that I need.

5. VHS - Taras, PFD, Substance, Best Of, NO story ( Too bad, no Academy!!! )
6. Posters - Official JD Closer, Lowlife, Substance. ( I used to have an official brotherhood poster but accidently left in a garage in Newcastle )

Rare stuff- I don't have much. I think what Australians consider as rare, may be easily available in UK or US. Like my Run 12", Palatine CD Boxset, Italian issue of PCL vinyl ( very shonky label ), die-cut 1963 box, Brotherhood CD with metallic slick and bonus CD pocket in brotherhood blue, US promo Best of ( very no-frills like ), Round&remix 3" CD.

This is off-topic but my rarest stuff is a vinyl of The Go-Betweens 1988 with every members signature and me name - wishing me well from chicken pox.....

I must agree with Huntsy about the Regret Slo'Throb' mix...bloody waste of my money...don't like all those bells and excessive indulgence.

i dont think Weatherall's really been cutting edge for the last 10 years. His ommision froma recent top 150djs survey might suggest a lot of other people agree with me.

When you say smoking d'herb improves the quality of those pretty dull mixes, its much the same as saying drop a couple of Eccies and listen to the how much better the James Holden Dub of SLY sounds.

I Dont think Ive got any rarities unfortunately, bar a couple of bootlegs and cover tapes off NME and such like

All in all it's pretty sad,no wonder no ones heard of them with fans like me around,memo to self must try harder. All my T-shirts are knackered as well.

Right then, I think I'll be casing Huntsy's joint first although the word on the street is that he lines the corridors to his Factory shrine with fresh Pringles every night and is awakened immediately at the merest hint of an unauthorised crunch. Swiping his formidable gear becomes strictly a Tom Cruise-like vertical entry operation.

Failing that I'll strap Jarvis down and attach a few diodes to his head ala Schwarzy in Total Recall. I'll then nick his mind-bogling memory bank of NewOrder gigs and transplant them in my own noggin. I'll be invincible.

How about the 2 books of Joy Divison/New Order articles, A History In Cuttings? 160 pages of fanzine and mainstream articles, as well as lyrics, gig guides(up to date for the time), and lyrics. Found copies of both editions back in the mid-80's, even though the second one has quite a few articles written in Dutch. No publisher info on the books themselves anywhere, so I don't know where they were put together or who had the idea to do so.

Oh yes, the books. I think I must have almost all of them. And all the official video releases too...

EVERY SINGLE New Order album and single on vinyl, or CD or tape, except the recent Get Ready stuff. ( with it's cop-out CD-only remixes and pointless 12"s released at god only knows what dates afterwards)

That's cos Fuckin' London Records never bothered even bringing out the bloody album on vinyl!!! Or if it has been issued, I've not seen one fuckin' copy any bleedin where.....like looking for scotch mist. Maybe its London's idea of a sick joke just to give us sad vinyl addicts the run around. Well, if that's indeed the case, the joke isn't even funny and I'm fucking fuming!

The album is available on vinyl through London.. I have one.. It was pressed in Germany and I've heard you can order it at HMV/Tower/Virgin in the UK. Alternatively, you can order it online from Amazon.co.uk. Admittedly it seems to be a limited release but that's the way with vinyl long-players these days..

Cheers for the responses, here's mine:

1. My collection currently numbers somewhere in the 250 item region.

2. I collect ALL NewOrder releases from ALL countries on ALL formats- promos, cassette, vinyl 7s, 12s and LPs, CD, video, DVD and even DAT, CDV, Laserdisc, acetate, soundtracks, whatever.. I limit my unauthorised product to vinyl bootlegs. However I'm not trying to collect every single frickin thing from every country- eg. if the AU CD version of a release has the same tracklisting and artwork as the UK CD then I generally won't get both. But I do admit to collecting every single and album on every available format. This leads to me owning such patently ridiculous things such as 13 versions of the Crystal single.

3.Some shit that's valuable to me, such as my scratchy first ever item a 1983 NZ Blue Monday 12" or my AU True Faith remix 12" with the cool Racic Paradise remix are not so rare.. I guess some of the more obscure items I have are the original From Brussels cassette set featuring 'Haystack'; the Christmas flexi; the unique 87 US True Faith promo CD; Run2 7" and 12"s, a Run2 signed by Hooky, a PCL vinyl signed by the band, Polish original BlueMonday 7", Gatefold Sunstance, Featuremist with Prime 5-8-6 parts I and III, a Thieves acetate and other stuff.. I also own a cheeky bottle of red wine with the lyrics to Temptation quoted on the back. Not something you see every day..

4. I'm still missing the odd 7" such as 1963 and BM95, and I only have 5 of the 9 Procession 7" colours (a Huntsman collectible!) I now have all the albums on vinyl as well as CD and I'm missing a couple of linen box Factory cassettes.. I like 'em! I'd also _quite like_ a metallic Brotherhood vinyl, the orange vinyl US In Order, the NZ red vinyl Blue Monday 83, the full-length Elegia tape and on and on...

If anyone wants to trade anything get in touch..

5. I check eBay and GEMM regularly but the coolest thing is to walk into a dingy little old vinyl store in a new city and stumble across something new..

What I'd like to see is some of the collections of those hardcore anoraks, like the owner of the WIM site, Jonathon and Fernando from the Ceremony Mailing List, maybe Seb or Nic from this site???

A guy i went to school with bought a 7" ltd edition of blue monday totally unlabelled apart from factory promo stamped on it with the big hole in the centre. He paid about 40quid for it and this was about 15years ago. I remember little else about it aside from the fact he outbid me for it in the shop and over the years i've always wondered what its origins are and how rare it is..

Unfortunatly i lost contact with my mate soon after we left school, he may be sitting on a nice little nest egg if he still has it...

... not wanting to spray piss all over your potential bonfire but I have in my suitably outstanding collection a 10" acetate of Blue Monday which (at the time in 1985) was worth 60 sheets. It might play like a needle scraping over sandpaper but boy does it glimmer in the limelight.

Well now I feel like the guilty partner which wasn't my intention. I couldn't quite phrase that last post about the acetate and have ended up looking like a walrus, unwanted at a childrens party.

The net triggered the obsessivness, practising communicating and socialising through a computer screen, a bit absurd though :-) Suppose it's surreal, comparing it to the real outside world. When i spotted neworder-sites, i began contemplating taking up my old, but isolated interest; collecting records. Haven't been a obssesive record collector for years, but N.O. have always been no.1 for me since the days around 78.

1. Around sixty, but then to be correct I have to set my record collection in alphabetical order and count it all over again.
2. & 3. Mostly Lp's(All, apart from Get ready which is a CD-purchase) and 12 inches + 4 of the first 7 inches. Think it is the "Run 2" (12 inch) or the "An ideal for living or perhaps "Komakino"? Or one the 16 versions of "Round & round" (don't know) Not a anti-bootleg. 4 Not at this moment 5 If I were to look for some, I'll might try Action Record, London. No, the interest has not entirely flown away. (By the way, I haven't seen them since the 22th of May 82)

I dont have anything really rare at all. I have all the albums, mostly on three different formats, vinyl, tape and CD (bought a different stages of my youth!) and lost of the singles on vinyl. My main problem, was when i bought most of the stuff i was a pretty young(im 26 now) and could only afford the bog standard versions of things from my local Woolworths.

Did purchase other versions of things later on in life, but a bastard man stole most of them....arent ex-boyfs the scourge of the earth?
