What about the greatest footballer to come out of Ole England Micheal Owens!

I think you could be right but there's only one Michal Owen.

It's gorgeous innit,Oh and you and me both with King Kenny, I'm torn as to wether he or Barnes was the best I've ever seen.

Larsson is'nt even the best player to have graced the hoops in recent years, Charlie Nicholas was a far better player than him. If Charlie had played for you lot last season he'd have scored 100 goals. Macavennie was a better player too. Larsson is a decent player but in a decent league he'd be very very ordinary! :smoking:

Nothing special to be honest, I'd have fancied us if we'd been at full-strength (7 players out of a semi-pro squad is quite a few :)). Both sides played a 4-5-1 (us out of availability, them out of caution) and it was a game of few chances - a 30 yard free-kick from Hanlon won it. They could have pinched another at the death but we were worth a replay, and a bit pissed off that we didn't get one, but that's football !

How wrong can one man be? Laudrup better than Larsson - yer having a fucking laugh Muffster, what did Laudrup achieve in Italy other than a sore arse, so how can that possibly make him better than Henke? as for how long I've been supporting them - please remember I'm only 26, my first game was in 79 against St.Mirren when I was 4, and no I do not remember it, the first game I can recall was the semi-final of the Scottish Cup in 82 against Aberdeen and the sheepshagging bastards beat us 1-0, I went to several games up until 91 - then I started going up frequently because my dad ran Corby Emerald CSC, as for Charlie I agree he was fucking brilliant - but Nicholas was an out and out goalscorer, Larsson offers so much more, not only did he score 53 last year, he created fucking loads as well, and his presence alone is enough to change the attitude of the team. McAvennie was much the same as Nicholas, not as good as Charlie, but another hero of mine - I was lucky enough to have been at the 88 SC Final, where Macca got 2 late in the game to secure the double in our centenery season. I honestly think Laudrup was a good player but not as good as Henke, my all-time Celtic hero from when I was wee was Davie Provan, best player I had seen till Larsson, and again I was lucky enough to witness the greatest ever SC Final goal in 85, when Provan scored a free-kick into the top corner - McGarvey won the game with a diving header and that won us the 100th SC Final, so you see Muffster - I have plenty of experience with the games and I can safely say Larsson is the best foreign player ever to have graced Scottish Football:smoking:

Shug, Charlie Nicholas an out and out goalscorer, no way man! The guy was a BRILLIANT footballer, unbelievable skill and vision. If he had the guts to join Liverpool instead of Arsenhole he'd have been even better than Dalglish. Henrik does'nt have the same all round game as Charlie, nowhere near the skill of Laudrup OR Di Canio and in fact is such an ordinary player he was going nowhere until Celtic plucked him from obscurity to be the big fish in a very little pond. If you ever find yourself in Florence mention Laudrup, you'll soon see how he was rated in Italy. The guy was brilliant for Fiore in a roaming role and was then taken to Milan where he was restricted to the wing with no freedom to improvise. Laudrup IS the best player to ever play in Scotland, even diehard Davie cooper fans will tell you that! The league up here is the weakest it's ever been, that's why Larsson shines so brightly at the moment, i'd love to see him pluck up the courage to move down south but alas he knows his limitations and has just signed an extension to stay here which is a shame. :smoking:

Have to agree, Larsson looks a great player at the moment, but the standard of defending he is "faced" with...... Konterman etc..... it's hardly surprising that he looks a great player against that sort of opposition ! When he arrived in Scotland from Feyenoord, he was viewed as being too lightweight and unlikely to relish the physical side of the Scottish game, mind you Feyenoord are no slouches on that front ! He soon proved everybody wrong, but he's not playing anyone !!

Laudrup really was quality, even for an adopted hun :). Not a patch on Charlie Nicholas though.

There's too many average/shit Scandinavians in Scottish football at the moment, has been for a few years. I can't help feeling that the Old Firm domination is driving talented Scots kids down to play for average teams in England rather than trying to be the best in Scotland - I may be wrong, interesting to see what people think. If there were 4 or 5 good teams rather than 2 then a group of 4 maybe, then there would be more opportunity for local players to develop and ultimately improve the national side.

If the proposed "phoenix" league comes into place it'll certainly be interesting to see how Celtic and Rangers do, but as for shoving them in the 2nd league....Fuck off. Celtic shouldn't have to prove themselves against the likes of West Brom and Barnsley(no disrespect) I think it'll happen sooner rather than later, and I can't fucking wait to silence these big-headed obnoxious twats down here who think Celtic and Rangers are shite, definately think we'd be up there challenging for honours:nod: And on that note I'll leave ye's to discuss - gotta go to work:mad:

Henriks scored a few for Sweden as well though. i'm sure he'd do a decent job in the Premiership - maybe Liverpools new signing after foolishly selling Leeds the League title last night.

The Scots league is really poor at the moment - for example when they were trying to flog Burchill last year, nobody in the Premiership were even bothered despite him being an international. Bar the Glasgow teams, all the teams in the SPL would struggle in the English 1st division.

it's typical English Football arrogance to ask Celtic and Rangers to play in a second division. Cant see this Phoenix shit happening though - the greedy feckers in the current Premiership would never allow any of their precious TV monies to go elsewhere.

Anyone remember Laudrup's aborted adventure(?) at Chelsea. Dear, oh dear. What was he on? 75k p/w or something? Farcical. Agreed, a brilliant footballer, but only in bursts, much like Larsson to be honest. He's either brilliant or he's anonymous, isn't he? Same of Gazza. And certainly Barnes. Of all the players thus far listed, only perhaps Maradona has ever shown any consistency to his game, or indeed mettle. A true world beater, in a league of his own in the modern era.

If I had to choose one brilliant player in the current game though, I'd have to go with Roy Keane. So what if he can't bury 40 yard free-kicks or dribble past 5 men, he's still the one reason ManU have dominated the current premiership (their only recent hiccup was in the year he did his cruciate). First name on the team sheet for me every time. And I'm not a Man U supporter. Much as I like fancy dans, deft flicks and back-heels you can't beat a good old-fashioned lung-busting, ball-breaking, badge-kissing hardman leading your boys out. Quality. Every team should have one. Keep football a contact sport!

I think Burchill's a tad unlucky. He's just never had a decent run to prove himself. He did alright at Brum and at Ipswich and two of the lads I do New Order gigs with absolutely worship him - got 4 in 4 games or something, for Pompey, looked class in the first, and has now done his cruciate. Poor sod.

Let's face it, Celtic and Rangers demand instant success, so no youngsters are ever gonna get a decent run-out at either club. What's the bettings Ross and Maloney from the recent Old Firm encounter both end up at Port Vale or West Brom in 5 years time? (see also: Miller, McInnes, etc).

Its not arrogance but fact the the Glasgow b(h)oys would struggle in the 1st (never mind the premiership) you only have to look at their records in Europe to know this.

Robbie's gone with our title hopes has he? I think not but we'll have to wait and see. I didn't want him to leave but if he does, it won't harm our stronest 11 as he wasn't normally in it. Will he improve Leeds? possibly It looks as if he has already demanded first team football.

Putting 6 past Juve in 2 games, and only losing to a penalty (that never was) away? Not that bad, surely?!

And in pre-season they beat West Ham, Sunderland and Fulham. And played Man U twice, beating them once, losing to them once.

You follow the Beautiful Game at all, Niel?!

The Old Firm and their supporters excessive demands for success are the major factor in the decline of the Scottish game. Many a decent player has had to head south to average teams because they just don't get a fair crack up here. Many of the foreign imports are average players at best, made to look good by a poor standard of football. As a Scot who sees a lot of premiership football i'd be inclined to say that the Old Firm would do quite well down there, and given two or three years would certainly be signing big big names as their financial clout is a match for most in the game at the moment. I think it's inevitable that they will be in the Premiership in the next few years, but only because Sky will demand it as their next big marketing tool, especially when they steam ahead with the pay per view scheme with every game available if you are willing to pay.

Bollox. Just a quick example..Last year Valencia 3 Leeds 0. this season Valencia 1 Celtic 0. Celtic had much the same record as Arsenal in the champs league this year - probably in a harder group.

Neil, Rangers and Celtic are handicapped at the moment by a very poor standard of opponent week in week out. Celtic's recent foray into the Champions league proved that they are not that far off the pace but they need harder games on a regular basis. It is only nine years since Rangers almost made the final of the Champions league, and that year they were cheated out of the final itself by Monsieur Tapie and his now famous bribing of the Russians. This season Celtic came away with great credit for their performances and were really unlucky not to go through, done out of a point in Turin by the worst decision of the season so far. Believe me, the Old Firm will do well when they get into a decent league but I guess only the passing of time will show whether or not that is true but i'm pretty confident all the same! :smoking:

Four years?

Don't think he managed four decent GAMES in an England shirt.

Are you honestly gonna say he's the best you had at Liverpool in that era? When you had Beardsley, Whelan, Hansen, Dalglish, etc. alongside him. Good in a decent "I can take people on, on the left, and get good crosses in" kind of way, but surely not the sort of player you'd ever base a team around.

I agree with every word Jarvo, but you have to remember, Laudrup and Gascoigne carried the Rangers team they were in for years. Laudrup never came to terms with the squad system at Chelsea, and being tied to the same role when he did play. He was the kind of player who was at his best when given the freedom of the pitch, just like Maradonna was.

Allen, two of the four he was voted player of the year. And while I agree there is a lot of competition to be number one at Liverpool his playing days didn't overlap with Kenny's so yeah he was the best since Kenny.I don't think I know any Liverpool fans who would disagree. As for England did you watch him or just boo when the odd thing didn't come off.I maintain he was the best player on the park in most games he played. He never squandered possession always had the best control, admirable qualities Oh and did he not turn the Argentina game on it's head in 86.Also at Liverpool his goal scoring record was phenomanal in the first four years. Over 100 in all.

Watching Sunday's Old Firm game (8 bloody notes AND I missed the first half!) the Rangers player that most impressed me was Ferguson. Seems they might just have one local talent carrying the rest of those prima donnas. Unfortunately, he does somewhat emit the appearance of a fan who's accidentally run onto the pitch.

Further to your point about not basing a team around him, I think I'm qualified to say we did as I went to about 40 games a season in those days including every F.A. cup game home and away in 1989 and he was undoubtedly the star of the team.

Awright Mr. Jarvis,

In response to your comment about Barry Ferguson looking like a fan who had run on the pitch I'd just like to say your spot on. He's a wee bam and a bigot to boot. Has a habbit of going out on the town with his Rangers tracksuit on after Old Firm games and then moaning when someone leathers him.

Fuck knows why Advocaat gave him the captaincy. Though given their piss poor performance over the last two seasons long may it continue.

God Bless Marin O'Neil

As a winger/playmaker Barnes didn't barely produce for England at all. The famous goal vs Brazil, and the Argentina match '86 were about the only occasions. Whether that was the fault of the tactics the surrounding players, or Barnes himself, he was a waste of time for England. Chris Waddle for example, was a similar type of player, and far far more effective.

Good manger though wasn't he?
