NO has just found what to write on the sleeve of the future album : dedicated to John.I have posted it on the front page of the website, as I think this is NO/JD related.
With Rob Gretton, I believe John Peel is a part of New Order and Joy Division's career. He will be missed, and we'll unfortunately never have another Peel Session from him, I'm sure most people were hoping for a new one in 2005.
Sad news indeed.
BBC6 music (channel 870) are playing a lot of the music peelie played. whispering bob harris will be paying tribute soon. they've just played the fall and the wedding present.

My sentiments exactly. But he's not just part of JD/NO's career. I doubt that, without him championing the new punk movement and everything after, a lot of my favourite bands would have gotten the exposure & record deals they did get in due time.

It's tremendously sad he's gone :( Peel was always the only DJ I bothered listening to on the radio, and I don't generally listen to the radio much. I remember staying up late sometime at the end of 1998 for New Order's "comeback" Peel Session when he interviewed all four (even Gillian) and played those five top-notch songs as well as a selection of their favourite tracks by other bands. I must look out my two tapes of that show, I got the whole thing on really good quality metal cassettes.
While I can't say I was much of a regular listener to his show, it's more than obvious how much he helped bands like the Order, The Smiths, and many more indie people achieve greater success in a very cynical music "business". He was definitely the DJ with the coolest and most varied musical tastes that this country has ever seen. Barney often said an important part of their success was down to Peel playing records like "Transmission" and "Atmosphere".
What's even sadder is that he has left us at a time when all this R&B/Rap/Hip hop, slob idol, and X-factor nonsense has almost completely destroyed a once great UK music scene through bad karaoke and a selfish, misguided lust for hollow stardom. I can't help but wonder who will champion the "real" music scene now? I wish I had faith in Radio 1, but their "modern" cheeky lad and ladette presenters are as dull as dishwater next to Peel. Fact.
Why oh why couldn't Simon Cowell, or some other talentless fuckwit have been taken instead??

Whenever I took the time to listen to John Peel, he almost always had something different, exciting or interesting to play.
It is very refreshing that someone of his age could remain so willing and eager to hear new, great music.
Heartbreaking. I thought he'd be around (and working) for a couple of decades yet. Peel's contribution to popular culture in this country is immeasurable.

Just came in to hear BLUE MONDAY on 98.20 FM RADIO and realize why.Great DJ and very relaxed kinda guy.He did a lot of great publicity for numerous bands.How sad........
Just been listening to the tributes on R1 for a few minutes and must confess to a little sniff and a big lump in the throat.
My favourite quote will always be from his short time presenting TOTP:
"And now Russ Abbott with his cover of Joy Division's 'Atmosphere'..."
Dammit!! Just woke up and this is the news I get??! 
Well, Mr. John Peel...this long time fan will miss you.

And if any of you are interested, it appears that Steve Lemacq will be doing a tribute show to Mr. Peel at 11:00 tonight, London time, so that means I'll be glued to the computer at 5 my time...
Thanks John for all the music. And espeically for playing Joy division, New Order and all those other great bands. I spent many many happy hours listening to the Peely show in the 1980's. One of my all time memories is going away on a Geography field trip, losing my virginity, getting back home and hearing Love Vigilante for the first time on the show
