I listened to John Peel from 1978 onwards. He was the only radio DJ I ever respected.

I received a few replies from him (to my letters) and they were all annotated with his tall, squashed writing, with little snippets of info.

He championed not just British independent/alternative music, but all varieties from all over the world.

I doubt there will ever be a more approachable, genuine 'celebrity' with a real feeling for not only the music, but the fans as well.

I'm sure he'll be missed by true music fans all over the world.

Pete Tong played True Faith in tribute to Mr.Peel just now on his show and near the end of the song phone messages from Bernard and then Hooky were aired paying their respects.Should be able find this bit of Tongs show at about 2 hours 25 mins in on Radio 1s website listen again.

I've been an avid Peely fan for sixteen years, and he has pointed me in the direction of literally hundreds of releases to compliment my record collection. He even helped me land my job, by playing the "offensive content" announcements my family and I recorded for his show.

Just a few weeks ago, John commented that it was his "ambition" to meet us all before the end of the year, and we were due to attend his Christmas techno night at Maida Vale studios in December.

It will be my life long regret that I never got the chance to meet and chat with someone who influenced my life so constantly, and so positively. I feel honoured to have contributed, in a very minor way, to his broadcasts.

I'm gutted, and still in disbelief that I'll no longer be taping his shows every week. The unprecedented reaction from his many, many fans around the globe only cements his reputation as the world's finest broadcaster. We should all feel privileged to have experienced his shows within our lifetime.

We shall miss you, Uncle John.

Truly sad.

Read on another message board that for fans of alternative music, this was our Princess Diana moment. Thought that summed it up quite well.

Read loads of articles about him over the last few days. You know someone's been an influence on you when every time you read one of their quotes, you can't help but read it in their voice. As if they are narrating.

Apparently he'd requested that a line from Teenage Kicks should appear on his headstone, 'Teenage Dreams So Hard To Beat'. There's talk of this being reissued, nice touch if that could go to #1.

Cartoon on the front of Wednesday's Guardian.....two angels in heaven, one holding a guitar, says to the other, "that new bloke says harps are out".
