i've just listened to R1 on the way home and it seems they have cleared their schedules and just playing 'Peel' music

Atmosphere came on Radio 1 at work this afternoon which was a surprise until after it finished it was announced that John had died.Ive had a lump in my throat since.It wasnt just his music it was his sheer humanity, wit and incredible sense of humour which was light years ahead and beyond any other Radio 1 DJs.

I first listended to Peel when i was 15 and still recall the show back in May 1985 when he was first to play tracks off Low Life.He played 6 tracks in that show and then 2 more the next night.In more recent years i had not tuned in so much until recently i was getting back in to listening almost every night as everything else on Radio 1 was abysmal.Now he`s gone and can never be replaced and his presence will be sorely missed.Fuckin great bloke.:(

Even when presenting ridiculous acts on TOTP, he announced their arrival completely deadpan. A one-off. RIP.

I recorded that show way back then, and it was the first tape I put on when I got home tonight. There was some comfort in hearing Peelie introduce New Order again.

aye owd peelie has shuffled off to the great gig in the sky eh. must admit i nearly "dropped the teapot" when i heard the news,he will be sadly missed by many. he was a champion of music full stop,wether it be reggae,punk,jazz,indie,rock n roll,rock,ethnic u name it he played it and for that we owe him our gratitude. peelie anounced and paid tribute to many a musicians death (ian curtis) included. i just hope that when he arrives at the top of the escalator a few of em are there to welcome him home. ill raise a glass to yer tonite john. rip.

Hard to belive no-one will ever record a "Peel Session" again,nearly anyone you can think of has done one. A great man,with probably the best radio voice in the industry. Possibly the only DJ who actually knew what he was talking about,and actually had his finger on the pulse of new music. Lets hope Radio1 do the right thing with his festive 50 at christmas-let Lamacq do it NOT that fuckin idiot Zane Lowe. Teenage Kicks? He`s givin me a fuckin lifetime of kicks. Goodnight sir,a postomous honor surely for this gentleman. RIP.

Once on Top Of The Pops after a particularly bland eighties pop act had just finished their song John turned to camera and dead-panned "well thats the best song ive heard since ...well... since i had my tea i reckon.But i did have a late tea" .Genius

Hell, even as a Scandinavian who missed most of Peelie's career I still feel his influence. The man was there every time something was happening in the music scene of UK, he witnessed the change from the pretentiousness of the early '70s to the different kind of pretentiousness of music since then and all kinds of things in between them. His eclectism in the music he played has never failed to impress me, he had true diversity in his tastes and that's the thing that sticks in my mind about him the most.

I miss the bastard. May he get to play all the Captain Beefheart and whatever else he wants to play, no matter where he is now. :(

That's the first time I've seen Joy Division mentioned and Hooky interviewed on the early evening news. I just wish the circumstances could have been happier.

Without the great man, the British music scene would have been very different indeed. I can't even begin to describe how influential he has been and the vast amount of bands who owe their career to Peelie.

He was on TV a while back, musing about getting old and how he thought he could play football forever. As somebody who recently hit 'the wall' this struck a chord with me. Now he's gone and one more good thing has gone from the world.

I'm in bits.

This is a real sad shock. The man was a huge influence throughout my adolescence and was a real musical lifeline to me living in a small provincial town. Without him how would I have heard those three life-changing words?

I thought and thought and thought about a track to play him off with, then it came to me. What could be better, than melting some transistors with The Fall playing Jeruselem. The neighbours did not like it, I do not care, it wasn't FOR the neighbours, it was for John.

Trying to get my hands on an amazing track by soft machine where they basically just declare Peel to be God.

Whichever music forum I go onto today, I keep reliving sad memories knowing that Peely won't be there on my radio anymore... :(:(

that's very sad. i just heard about it on the cbc and they played the undertones' teenage kicks (peel's favourite song) on the radio in honouring his memory. even though i'm not english and never heard him on the radio, i'm in awe that the brits are lucky enough to have a dj like him after hearing all the great things he has done for bands. i was shocked that he was gone. very respected man and will be very much missed.

This is some truely bad and unexpected news. I heard it on the radio news this morning. Lots of mentions in the news also of Joy Division & New Order, and some of the other bands he helped.

Anyone know what Mark E SMith has said to upset a few people about Peel's death?

RIP John. They're asking should John Peel be included the UK music hall of fame over on the CH4 website. I think he definately should be and it's a shame it's taken his death to remind us.

Could only ever hear him on crappy MW here in Ireland in the 80s - which ruined the impact of much of his stuff - but I often listned anyway, just to expand my musical horizons.

He and this geezer from The Undertones were being interviewed about John Peel. I'm not sure whose idea it was given his notoriety when it comes to interviews. For the most part he slumped there are grimaced at the camera and while the interviewer dealt with the awkward silences. He did recall how John Walters had told him, when the Fall were new, that "nobody else will play your music, but we will", and that he was grateful for that. I think this is about as close to a compliment that I've ever heard from Mark E. Smith.

Mark E.Smith was being interviewed on Newsnight.I cant believe the BBC decided to choose him as they must have known he has a reputation for being shall we say ,diificult.He was giving one or two word answers if at all and made sarcastic comments like "can i talk now" and "are you the DJ?" to the Newsnight interviewer.He finished by saying how he and Peel had always stayed at arms length.

There were some quotes from Barney in yesterdays Metro, about how JD/NO wouldnt have existed without Peels support and encouragement down the years.

Sad news indeed. RIP John. Although I only got to know you from recorded sessions (and some attempts to catch BBC world in mid-90's), I know how much you've given to the music we all love,

A sad loss. He was a pensioner who's heart was still 16. He was always willing to push new music and give new bands a break.

I think Barney's words in the Metro paper describes him well.

Although I can't pretend I used ot listen to his show a lot he was a DJ and person I had so much respect. A person in his mid 60's not stuck in the 1950's and 1960's but stuck in the 2010's promoting new acts.

I hope they can find another DJ that will continue to promote new acts and play obscure stuff because that is probalby what John Peel would have wanted.
