someone like you - gabriel and dresden remixes

i would just like to say how excited i am that the "someone like you" remixes josh and i did back in september (sept 11th, the day they flew planes into the wtc, hence the name 911 vocal mix) are now fully available on vinyl. unfortunately, the mixes were not included on the uk cd single versions because of their length (both are 11+ minutes and uk singles can only have 20 minutes of music to be considered for the chart) and also james holden, futureshock and funk d'void have larger fan-bases which made us the odd-men out.

however, i was just serviced this single on a double pack 12" single from reprise records yesterday, which points to this as being the second u.s. single from get ready. it includes all the mixes with futureshock's mix and funk d'void's taking the a-side, our 911 vocal mix taking the b-side, the futureshock strip down and the james holden mix taking the c-side and our voco-tech mix taking the d-side. i'm sure that all the mixes will be available on cd single here. with the b-sides from uk cd single 1

if you liked the new order "someone like you" mix, then keep a lookout for gabriel and dresden re-workings of dj tiesto's "in my memory", way out west's "mindcircus" romanthony's "never fuck" and roger goode's "in the beginning". we have a lot of plans for 2002, so if you like progressive house with a musical edge...get ready!

sorry, that i have to slow down your enthusiasm but nearly all of the remixes done for the "Get Ready"-material really do suck !!!

After eight years of abstinence i (and others?) want original NewOrder material and NOT a bunch of uninspiring remixes...

There's only the Fire Island remix of Regret that I would even listen to. Most remixes are shite, I can't see the point of them to be honest. Fucking lazy not putting out extra tracks or live versions. That house stuff is just shit IMHO.

yes, thanks for dropping off that info Dave. i hope you guys get some club play. we need a new version of Thieves Like Us more than we need any new remixes. A new vocal would make that track unstoppable.

i think you will like our "911 vocal mix." excepting the kick drum and some percussion, all the sounds used in the mix are from new order's parts. being that new order were one of the most instrumental bands in my development as a dj back in the 80's, i would handle working on a remix of theirs with kid gloves.

the "voco-tech dub" is more insturmental - only using the "someone like you" words sparingly. this version is getting a fair amount of attention from dj's.

it wasn't easy remixing this song - bernie's vocal parts were very out of tune - that's why all the other remixers left out the line "we're having the time of our lives...we're lost in a cruel paradise" nothing a few days with a plug-in called "auto-tune" couldn't fix...

Perhaps the fact that you called him "Bernie" might have made him sing off key?? I dunno, just a suggestion...;)

Do you think you can take the vocal from Thieves Like Us and run it through the auto-tune. I'll be looking for the double pack in stores this week. What's the US release date? Are promo's circulating now? Does Barney ever sing in key? Does your mix sound anything like Circulation records? What was/is your favorite neworder song?

would kill to have the masters of old new order songs! theives like us esp because it's so beaufiul and symphonic. in that song, bernard's vocals being off-key is attractive. in "someone like you" it was scary. the vox were masked by the guitars in the original. i would pay new order to re-mix "blue monday" - my favorite dance record of all-time.

u.s. release date is "3rd week of january" according to reprise records. not sure if 60mph is going to be the a-side. apparently the same artwork will be used on the single.

the voco-tech dub sounds a lot like circulation. they're a huge influence on josh and i's work.

by the way - we were very influenced on the "911 vocal mix" by the way lee coombs did his mix of crystal. when presented with such great musical parts, why not let them breathe - as coombs did!

...don't you think it's a bit too easy to blame the quality of some remixes on Barney's "out-of-tune" vocals ??? Barney's vocals were/are always a bit sloppy but that makes their records charming! And i guess that's why "Republic" is NewOrder's worst album, because on this one Barney IS in tune...

...maybe it's your lack of inspiration ???

BTW: sorry, if this sounds a bit hard, but i'm doing music myself, and to do remixes such as the "Crystal", "60mph" and "SLY" mixes you don't have to have much talent...pay me a hundred bucks and i'll do you a skullcrushing remix myself...cheers.

So is that what you do it for, to see your name on records ? Write your own !! Backdooring isn't exactly much credit is it ?

One route to making a name for yourself is through remixing other peoples work. it may be an easier route than trying to peddle your own songs to unwilling labels but remixing is an artform when done properly. I appreciate Dave coming here to let us know about his mix of neworder being available soon. Just imagine if it was YOUR mix of neworder about to come out. probably the best christmas present ever would be to see written by sumner, morris, hook, gilbert and additional production by YOUR NAME HERE. Has anyone heard dave's mix? just because most of the others have been worthless, doesn't mean Dave's will be too. According to him, they used quite a bit from the original. Let's slag each other and try to be civil to guests delivering information on neworder. I wish it was my mix coming out.

I haven't heard it, so I'll leave off my usually prejudiced hate of the remixes behind (temporarily) and offer Davey a little support. Just listen to it (even though I can't)

a little history on gabriel and dresden

me (dresden) has been a dj for 15 years. started out playing goth, industrial and synth-pop in connectcut, usa. moved to los angeles, ca in jan 2000 to become music director and on-air jock at grooveradio.com

met josh gabriel at 2001 winter music conference. he founded "mixman" - he wrote the program as a tutorial for kids wanting to learn how to sequence music. he was peddling a few original tunes that he'd produced in his home studio for fun.

i liked said tunes a lot and since i'm working as a u.s. talent scout for pete tong, told him i'd pass them along to pete for potential play on essential selection. he ended up not only playing josh's song "wave 3" a few times, but also used it on his "twisted beats" compilation.

fast forward to july - a friend of mine named pablo la rosa was remixing groove armada's "superstylin" and needed some help with it. i came in and did a fair amount of work on the mix and enjoyed the process - decided that production was something i needed to be doing. passed along a copy of the groove armada mix to pete tong. he liked it; asked me if i wanted to have a go on new order with pablo. pablo decided he didn't want to have a remix partner so i took the new order mix elsewhere - where i took it was to san francisco where josh lives.

we worked on the two mixes for almost 3 weeks. it was a weird time to be creative - we began work on the vocal mix on 9-10-01 and laid most of the arrangement down on 9-11-01. of course, making music was not the first thing on our minds. despite the trying times, we turned the mixes in and both were immediately accepted by the band.

since then we've been working on quite a few projects. we're both very excited about the future. hopefully we can work on another new order song in the future. and yes, we're working on our own stuff too!

Hey Nic/Seb -- Do you think you guys could get permission to post the gabriel/dresdin mixes? it would be nice to hear their interpretation and maybe ask dave some questions before he decides to never visit this site again.
