Doesn't work. Picture of a "QTime File" with a tear in it.

Thanks a bunch! This was always an early favourite of mine. One of the best New Order tracks.

Hopefully the next one to be dusted off will be Lonesome Tonight.

Thanx for posting this one though!

It was great quality.

Sounds more like a problem with your copy of quicktime, Grahame - the file does work, just right-click over file to d/l, and play it through something other than Quicktime (maybe Windows Media Player) and see how you go. CTB :bear:

For all of the talk about Barney's vocal weakness this tour, he sounded in top form on this track. Bravo! The only unpolished part was Phil's guitar; it sounded a bit erratic.

Cheers nice one.yeah it does sound even more like the original studio recording than any live version from the 80s.Apart from a couple of (Phils?) guitar bits.Bernards guitar sounds good.

Thanks for sharing! Still sounds a bit rusty, if not to say, aimless, but well... they haven't played it for years... hope it stays in the set and is not going to be replaced by "Guilt Is A Useless Commotion"... :evil4:

Good stuff Spotty!! It's sure to get better performance wise if they keep it in the set.

Many thanks! what a blast down memory lane. As Johnny says, it faithfully reproduces the studio version very well. Good work by Mr Lyons!

Thanks a lot for this!

It reminds of the good old times...

But I think it's a little bit short. Check another much older version of EGG played in Berlin in 1981 which is about 9:26min

http://www.dialog-robotik.de/NewOrder/egg_so36_may81_berlin.mp3

But even this version isn't very long. Who has a longer live version of EGG? I know it must be about 22 minutes!

Off the top of my head I think the Hamburg show from 1981 is the longest.

That sounds amazing. It's really great to hear this old track performed and sounding very much like the original itself, even Bernard's vocals, very nice.

I wish gobshite had kept it shut before this....just so I could hear n-000 italians LOSING it in unison when they hear dugga da da da dugga da da.

Dunno about this "like the studio version" stuff.... Sounds to me like it's just that someone's bunged a sample of the original backwards feedback noise onto el-Kurzweil(sadly it has so much memory that this is not going to curtail barney's quest to dump the daftest loops imaginable on BM). Remember that the bass part is (oringinally, and presumably now too) played by the same trigger part (then the accent trig on a Dr55, now a tape recorded pulse that triggers a drawmer gate[1]) that plays the top line (yes the one phill-in like to play with) on Temptation.

Besides..."like the studio" is a pile of warthog's ball-sweat that's been pre-programmed into the brains of people brought up listening to mime artists over the last 10-15 years. If I want to hear a well thought rhough mix with perfect balance, I put the album on. If I hear a live track I expect to hear the band (carbon AND silicon based members) playing their danglies off, not the sort of performance you get when you've played the part 700 times until the producer is happy and the engineer didn't fook up. BM is the ONLY track i prefer in the new "studio identical backing tape play in" form (though if YSF is done that way too it doesn't show).

I LOVE NO boots for the very reason that each has a unique performance of the piece....that's rare enough in all accoustic outfits, and bloody unique among electronic acts. Think how many live recordings of EGG or the Village bounce like mad compared to the studio versions, sometimes cos the band or Ed were experimenting, sometimes cos the voyetri and ARPs were in a mood (good or bad).

I'm sorry, but in my opinion, if you want to hear live tracks like the studio, do what Radio one used to do for their "fantasy gig".....stick on the album track with a hint of reverb, a bit of boost below 40Hz and a crowd loop dubbed on.

Of course anyone who downloaded the recently advertised slightlynarrow soundsystem EP, will know that when it comes to live we lose the plot even more than NO, and it's MOSTLY on purpose, and may even cite a certain live track contained on it as a very good reason to play in the keyboard parts :) (notwithstanding that if WE payed out kb parts in we'd just stand their lookin uglier and dumber than usual)

[1]I seem to recall arguin quite vehemently against the idea that it was a noise gates because their is complex envelpoe movement in the sounds.....I just never considered they could use a really GOOD gate with EG's and filters itself.

Top Suff.

I hope that now there'll be more diversions from the "standard" set.

I really hope they mix up the set a bit next year. I was getting quite depressed with the current set. It's good to see EGG, was also great seeing love Vig. but we need more. Thieves Like Us, Perfect Kiss. And no, I don't want the same answers saying "impossible, they won't be able to program them" "Barney can't sing that one anymore". They should simply get it sorted, it's what we all want to see and hear. They need to get a bit more 'New Order' in their sets if you ask me. You old time fans might enjoy the JD songs they play. But let's face it, NO isn't JD, and although three of the members in NO started out in JD, NO went in a completely different direction in the end, and to be honest I don't want to see Bernard singing a song, that wernt originally him singing it.

why can't they at least re-introduce a bit of Technique in the sets. Round & Round doesnt sound good live? Well i'd rather have that over any JD song any day. Bernard just shouts and screams in the JD songs anyway, look at the way he screams on Transmision.

And i'd do anything for True Faith to sound more like the original. The best NO song in my opinion. And when performed live it's this oakenfold remix :(

It would be great to see a set where the real classics like BLT remain. But just get rid of the JD songs to be honest, it seems such a waste of time when we could have a nice live 7 minute version of Perfect Kiss instead.

I don't wanna seem like im complaining though, I know the guys have tried this year with Love Vig, and now EGG, but it's not enough. Sorry for sounding like the greedy fan, but surely it's true what i'm saying here.

It's usually me who points out the programming troubles....but there's two things worth mentioning.

LAZYLAZYLAZY fuckers. the COULD do it, but will they. If they do it themselves te stuff will sound new and a bit different ( like some of the reprograms on the 98 tour), I'd like that.

But there is another option.... Stop being a bunch of major label, EDAC-connected(engineer thing 1 in 10000 will get what I mean), hard disk jockeys.....shut the FUCK up.....and plug your damned old machines back in.......they'll still go you know....and last time I looked you weren't short of reconditioning money. Instead of employing some (talented and passionate) gimp to hodgepoge and kludge TPK together from the original multitracks onto a BACKING TAPE ( I cannot tell you how painful and embarrassing I find this after all my years of yelling about "last honest band" "only band with the balls to play live").....why not......radical fookin idea here....

spark up a rack of voyetras, and E-II+, a dmx and some horrid yamaha Drumbox, and put the old discs in. (I know some songs will have gone....but the more I thought about it the more I realised that a band touring with such a diverse and insane rig would live in an ocean of backups and backups of backups and offsite backups in safes).

Hell I've used a chasebit which sounds a bit like a boyetra, and I've used yamaha rx's and I've GOT an ES32i which is practically an emulator, and how hard can a DMX be...it's for drummers.....so I tell you what......

If they're too limp and lame to do it......I'll do it FOR them....for nothing, just leave me alone with the gear and the discs and Gillian and Steve and Barney's mobile numbers and I WILL SORT YOU OUT A SET!!!!!!!!!!1 I'm a MIDI DEITY.....I am referred to as the professor throughout the local music scene (for a while I even got "the Doctor" from one band I worked for, which I ADORED)....admittedly, considering the scope of said scene ( and the fact that I can't arsed with it any more (note careful wording, of you read my post on why I'm such a miserable cunt)).....this equates to being a Whale Shark in a small muddy puddle, and on the global scale I'm just some mad bastard who irritates machines and tries to pass the results off as music. BUT I do know me shit, and I can do the dr doolittle thing with music machines......and I stand by my statment.....

GIVE ME TWO WEEKS AND ALL THE REMAINING GEAR AND DISCS AND I WILL GIVE THEM A TOURABLE SET AND RIG.

Steve could do it, Barney could do it in his sleep, but they can't be bothered. We've had 4 years of the same damned set that panders to the casual listener......if we want New Order back we need to do it ourselves....and I for one am willing to take a crack at it.

Returning to Earth for a moment.....seriously there are some fooking awesome midifiles for some songs out there......maybe WE the great unwashed of NOOL should see just how close ( or, perhaps it's better to say "how right") we can make some of those sound, on whatever cack-piles line our bedrooms and studios. Could we SHAME them into it?

I shall shut up for now, But I will add this.....I will shortly.....when my fingers cool, be making a proposistion on a new thread, the subject of which will be...."The campaign for real new order".....stay tuned.

PS, I'm only half kidding about the whole being a MIDI/machine guru thing and only quarter kidding about being willig to take a crackl at rebuilding a a tourable rig for them. But that's cos I aint slept in like days ( well 20 mins here and there) and I currently inhabit a subtly differnt reality from the rest of ye :)

looking forward to the thread steve. I will copy and paste what I wrote above, into it. You know, band management do read the board, and perhaps, just perhaps our words on these forums could get through to the people we know as New Order.

Erm.... message to Steve Campbell.Just because i thought it sounded like the studio version doesnt mean i think it should sound like that .Its good but i MUCH prefer versions like Tolworth 83 ,Kilkenny 83 or NY Ukrainian Hall 81 .Thankyou

Can't tell how glad I am Nic put this link for Torino's EGG. But I'm also glad Steve Campbell pointed out my problem with it, being how much it sounds like the studio version, making it look like they just added guitars, bass, vocals and drums on top of it.

At the same time, live New Order songs are often like this, these days. I mean, all those keyboards lines when noone plays keyboard on stage (WFTSC, Krafty, Crystal, Jetstream...) It's a bit annoying at times, I find.

Nice Juan, thanks. I'm with Adam R in that NO have done the "we're now happy playing JD songs again, IC god rest his... etc, etc" bit. Now it's time to get on with banging out as much classic NO as they can before they finally call it a day for good. We need to hear Mesh, All the way, Dream attack, Perfect kiss, Age of consent etc.

Er, haven't they always done this? Round & Round, True Faith and especially Bizarre Love Triangle have always had pre-programmed keyboard lines no one plays. That's the whole point of them. Virtually every New Order song has a programmed bass line you wouldn't dream of playing live - same goes for the sequenced drum patterns: no one plays a drum kit on Blue Monday, and you wouldn't expect them to!

You're right, of course, about preprogrammed stuff. But does everything has to be preprogrammed ? I mean, I would prefer Phil to drop some guitar parts and rather play some keyboard stuff. And by that, I mean stuff that are notes played, not just patterns and programming. I find it disturbing to watch a band that looks like just a rock band (2 guitars, bass, drums) and sounds like a more keyboard-based one, see what I mean ?

But I know it was already the case with songs like Dream Attack or Run live.

Buster Klumpy wrote: But I know it was already the case with songs like Dream Attack or Run live.

Dream Attack was indeed sequenced, BK, but I think Gillian switched to keyboards for the outro of Run.

Can anyone who was there remember who played the geetar part on E/G/G at the weekend? People are saying it's Phil, but I'm pretty sure it was Barney who was thrashing away at it, no?

I think we're suffering some layman confusion here.

There is a heck of difference between "preprogrammed (well....sequenced) keyboards" and "backing tape".

They may CALL it a hard disk recorder, but a tape machine by any other name doth stink as bad.

New Order always kept their machines live, and that gives the player, the engineer and, most importanly, the unsung silicon band members themselves, a chance to PERFORM.

A tape's just a tape, it's miming, and it's actually illegal in some states of the US to use tapes on stage without a disclosure of the fact on the ticket (courtesy of Madonna's like a virgin tour I believe).

When I go to see my second favourite band "the orb" I expect them to have a 24 track harddisc machine and some decks and maybe a FEW live instruments, I expect that because they are DJ's (and this is also the reason I hate most DJ's....if the orb and coldcut and dj shadow and the like can do such insane things with bits of tunes.....why do people like tall paul and brandon fecking block even exist). The live mixing of playback IS their chosen medium. therefor it's cool. When the orb were refused their live rig rider for a live TotP appearance, they went on with a revox B77 open reel tape deck with the actual master tape on it, plugged that in, played IT "live" and sat and played chess.......for them....for what THEY are, it was bloody hilarious.

NO are not DJ's, they are a band, therefor play-in material is wrong, cheating and bad.

And for those who think I'm just being obsessively anal over some minor technical point.....consider the following 3 pieces of evidence.

  1. Blue Monday, had they ever gotten it to work correctly was originally intended to be an automated encore. Gillian was to come out, press play (in that sexy way only she can) and fook off again, while her voyetrae (I've decided that in the absence of a decent plural, I'll just cycle thru some plausible ones) and Emulators knock the tune out (I don't THINK the evil DMX got much of a look in on stage, it's parts are probably played by a drumulator or a Linn). Now THAT is a clever concept ( albeit KRAFTWERK's clever concept). Is it the same thing as gillian walking on, putting a tape in and pressing play?

  2. Hooky on OSM: Tony H. Cunt says "you've always kept music live, so these machines will be playing this live tonight", and hooky replies (ish) "yes they're all alive these machines, and very good friends of mine". Would the performance have been the same with the fluffy recorded version of TH1 as heard on videosubstance playing in the background from a DAT?

  3. Gillian pressing play at the start of WAS on PFD, and that EARTHQUAKE bassline flying out cos the Emulator(it may be something else actually playing, but I'm fairly sure she starts it from the EII+'s front panel) was feeling real groovy that night.

Oh BTW Johnny mate, I was raging against the concept not the statement or person who made it, sorry if I offended :)

EDIT: dying to hear Al's thoughts on this too. Also....Phil-in had a shiteload of keyboards around him at hyde park and Glasto, is it possible some stuff has been put back onto real gear?

I don't understand everything, being neither a specialist nor english-speaking, but I think I once again agree with Steve Campbell...

For the loads of keyboards gear for Phil-in, maybe one of those is just for Barney to play with on Blue Monday...

Me either. As long as the sound is crisp, clear and loud enough I don't care about the source. Did all this "keep music live" nonsense not die out in the 80's?

I seriously prefer having New Order using pre-recorded stuff and play over it, and autocues than not having New Order live anymore.

They could hire musicians to do it, but I seriously doubt the current "tour" is going to put money in the band's pockets... let's face it, doing festivals is probably not the best way to cash in... since the money is splitted for everybody...

Er, nish really. But I've said this on the other forum - everyone went wild for LWTUA and then you'd think they'd never ever heard Temptation straight after that (or would think New Order were playing Elegia or summat!). Only a very few of us in the crowd seemed to know what EGG was - the vast majority were just Joy Division fans. Typical continental audience really.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not that kind of person. Just 2 things:

  1. I prefer when they have to push even juste on or two buttons, to give the impression that it's more open to variations

  2. Of course, you can't do live everything that's on the record. But that's the point of live shows too: trying to find a way to do songs without the billion layers you can have on record, even if it means dropping some parts...

Apparently these days the point of a live show is to see puppets dance to a tape.

Gillan's been replaced by a tape. How long before Steve, Hooky and Barney?

If the point of using prerecorded material is that they machines cannot play live ( Once again proving technology retards rather than advances, as this "impossibilty" was a reailty 20 years ago)....

Then I propse they play Barney in off tape, since he is the one who struggles hardest to do anything live.

How would that make the "tapes are OK" people feel.

Fookin' hell! As amazing of a time I had in May, had they done this in Chicago, I would have gone batshit insane. I would literally be screaming through the entire 4+ minutes. It feels like they didn't fuck off the song for....18 YEARS!! Barring the AutoCue, the guitar and bass bits were all here, and Steve has never been sharper..

If there's a God, I pray someone taped this and it will be thrown into the NYC DVD (also if they dust off some other classics as well)

thanks for that excellent recording :thumb: really good to see/hear them bringing this one back to life. how big exactly was the crowd? very small judging by the thunderous response at the end :\ohwell: any change of the rest of this gig seeing the light of day?

There's something pretty hilarious in the current ongoing threads, if you think of it. There's debate about which songs are overrated and so many things. As it has been said, the New Order fan is a pretty difficult one.

But in the same time, lots of these people who demand so much of their favorites bands can't be arsed about if they play live or if it's just monkeys starting tapes.

It's a bit : don't mind if they mime all thay songs from star to end, as long as they change the setlist...

Only at NeworderOnline's ...
