VIKING or SPOTTER?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (in NOStory), Barney said the fans fell into two camps:

Camp1= Football Hooligan like, Camp2= Spotty Student like.

It seems the grown up terminology for Camp1 has become 'Vikings'.

Could we / should we give a grown up name to the Camp2 group?

If so, what would we call it... The 'Spotters' maybe?

But was Barney right?

How about simply THE CAMP??? It's been well established that all New Order fans are outright gayers, and Ness and Maya regularly lezz-up, so let's just get ourselves out of the collective closet.

OUT AND PROUD OF IT, I say!!!

Doesn't Alumni imply some sort of collegiate or intellectual elitism, Craig? Which ain't really on, now, is it? Or even true?

The Vikings thing wasn't even penned by the 'ardcore who follow New Order. It was first worded by Roger Lyons in Sound on Sound magazine maybe two years ago. Yes, it was in reference to a pin-badge bearing said moniker, though that was only there in citation of the Film/Soundtrack bearing the same name. Until Brett Lambe posted here asking who the Vikings were, after seeing the Sound on Sound article, I don't know of one person who'd ever used that nomenclature. But, it seems to have caught on a bit in the past couple of years. It's certainly not a club with a membership form or a dodgy handshake, there's an open invite to all who can be arsed to attend the odd-gig and go for the odd-beer. It's a very loose terminology.

It ain't exactly difficult to be both an 'ooligan and a university graduate at the same time. For as the holy bible "Green Street" teaches us, yer average casual is almost certainly a respectable middle-class professional as well a brawling naughty boy at the weekend (and maybe even in mid-week, depending on fixtures).

That's the purpose of the thread... do people think there are two camps?

Based on the 'wankers' response; seems a nerve has been hit.

And yep 'Intellectuals' can be hooligans. There would be, as with all social groups, a scale along which people would have an affinity for.

The thrust of the thread isn't to suggest that one group would be / could be superior to the other; i'm sure that there would be equal numbers of 'wankers' in both groups (as is the norm for all social groups).

I suggest Alumni because that's what people with degrees are called; i.e. a 'spotty student' who has graduated whereas I sort of see a 'Viking' as a mature 'football hooligan'; a macho type with some kind of moral code of honour...

The Vikings is a great nickname for us lot, was back in 2002 for Finsburgh that Al got the badges made weren't it?

Vikings to me signifies a mad bunch of bastards who drink too much and travel all over to see "their" band.

And can I just say the last set of badges were a lot better than the first incarnation ;)

Woah there, Shug: you're putting extra pressure on poor Al to come up with an even better design for the next batch of gigs!!!

I'm sure the bizarre parallel dimension you live in is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. No-one calls graduates 'alumni' except poxy universities trying cling to some shred of respectability when in fact the standards in Higher Education are so apalling low that it's embarrassing. And I should know, 'cos I've got three fucking degrees and teach in a 500 year old University and I'm still a thick cunt, and would gladly trade all three of my degrees in if I could get to the QEH gig (of which I would inevitably remember very little having been on the pop with the Viking hordes all afternoon).

Digi, as was said earlier, the Vikings is just a group of people who came together at gigs. No-one sat down and said 'oooh, let's call ourselves something,' and printed out membership cards, or whatever and it was just something that was picked up on by New Order's road-crew (who originally just called us the Stalkers!). How would your new found group work, one wonders? You seem to be trying to form a group for people who DON'T do gigs and DON'T actually know one another, so I'm a bit perplexed? You, of course, are welcome to join us for a drink any time you wish, whether you be joining us as Vikings, NOOLers, or whatever. Thus far, you appear to have resisted and I'm not entirely sure why - you didn't pop your head around the door for the Audley (I'm sure you had your reasons) and you didn't get a ticket for the QEH either (yes, I know, you couldn't get the seat you wanted (you might regret that - check the ebay thread out I started earlier) but you COULD have bought a ticket, when all is said and done).

So in your 'bizarre parallel dimension' Vikings go to NO gigs rather than conquering Northern European lands as is the popular belief?

Obviously 'Alumni' is an allusive and metaphorical description, as is 'Viking'...

The question as to whether or not their are two groups of fans I think, has been answered by the Viking leaders... Now to those who don't feel Vikingified; should we have a 'spotty student' label? The Vikings are clearly upset by Alumni- any other suggestions?

i am beginning to wonder whether dw can actually read what is written or if he picks random phrases & just replies to them.

the vikings thing came from the intro music. jarvo designed a badge for the 2001 tour for those people going abroad etc for a bit of fun. it used a viking symbol due to the intro music & had some luvverly english flags on (hence shug prefering the last one) nobody said lets call ourselves vikings.

& yes - it was people THAT WENT TO GIGS. anywhere. everywhere. for the social, for the fun, for the beers, but mostly for the songs. try it. you may like it.

Like Hibster says, if you don't feel "Vikingified" you're putting way too much stress on an extremely loose term which is ultimately about as democratic as you can get. Even if you've still got problems with acne, you'll be welcomed with open arms!!

You know the problem with this DW ? By nature, its divisive - putting fans into 2 separate categories. Whereas a key part of the NOOL community is about bringing NO fans together.

Anyone who's been to a gig-meet or any other piss-up arranged thru this site knows what an inclusive atmosphere it is regardless of background or any other characteristic you care to think of.

Come out on the 12th and see first-hand how you're missing the fcuking point.

c'mon Digi

Last thing we need is more division, why try to pigeon hole New Order fans? fer fooks sake.

We are just New Order fans from all walks of life. Some wankers, some top geezers, maybe, my guess is I'd get on with every single one of you.

Fair play to the 'Vikings', I've been to NO gigs since '85 and was blissfully unware of the term until I came on this site early this year.

For me, I just went NO gigs with my mates, and ended up chatting to like minded guys/gals and had a laugh.

why seperate us when the whole fookin point of this site is to unite?

PS 'The Wankers' was a wind up.

EDIT: Looks like JG beat me to it on this point, and did it more eloquently!

Sorry, but Alumni is terrible, you wouldn't want to be one of them! The only University grads who get involved with Alumni activities are normally the ones who have no life after finishing their degree.

Why do we need two groups anyway? Viking's just fun to use for gig attendance, I don't think it is an identity like a football firm.

About the origins of the Vikings - haven't there been people wearing viking helmets at gigs for several years? I remember asking about it here after the Stockholm gig in 2001 and Al explained it was because of the soundtrack intro used much in the 80s.

As for some of the replys to DW's original alumni post: reactions. storm. waterglass.

You'd think that after all these years and countless airmiles "stalking" them, the band might actually relent and start playing "The Vikings" for the devoted before the gig. Or is that too close to "selling out"????

Indeed, you're right. ATR had a Viking helmet in Stockholm for that gig, which prompted the rude retort from Hooky, something along the lines of, "Alex, you look more of a c--- than usual in that helmet!"

Think Alex might've even had one at the New Year gigs in 1998?

Before that though, it was just the inflatable skeleton called, um, Ian! :nonono:

Yeah, "For a Few Dollars More": it's a nice gag, and it shows they haven't lost their sense of humour, but I think maybe "Keep on Truckin'" would be more apt. Or Clive Dunn's "Grandad".

Just a suggestion! Does sound a bit naff I suppose... Maybe 'The Spotters' is better; reflecting the spottyness of students and the train spottering tendencies some of us may harbour...

I don't want to divide fans in a negative way... it's just that Vikings seems to be testosterone heavy... would be good to have a second option as a fan identity, although no-one else seems to agree...

What won't be dispelled is the notion that New Order fans are mostly borderline alcoholics. The only ones who aren't are the fully-fledged dispomaniacs currently well beyond the "borderline" category.

I think the Hooligan tag on here is used a bit tongue in cheek. It just refers to those that follow footy and enjoy (most of) the banter at footy games.

I've (unfortunately) met loads of 'proper' hooligans, not personal friends I might add, and can say to a man they were complete wankers. Every last one a bigot.

Bernard's original glib comment that all New Order fans were either football hooligans or spotty students was a little wide of the mark. Sure, New Order was the band of choice for a lot of youth who also counted loosely football-related disorder amongst their pastimes, there were frequent fights at New Order gigs in the 80s that may have been partly fuelled by football rivalries, and it was probably seeing this unfolding in front of him on a nightly basis that prompted Bernard's quote.

As for the spotty students comment, that is most likely a reference to the cult of the raincoat that had surfaced towards the end of Joy Division. Miserablist students and disaffected teens who sat in their bedsits listening to miserablist music. Like The Smiths. People who would run a mile from football hooligans, yet were drawn together by the power of the music.

At the end of the day, we are all here, and all at gigs (whichever row of seats), because we like the music that New Order make. This music has no fan profile, race, age, sexual orientation. It's called love, and it belongs to us.

Anyone not in the Viking gang is a loser? Don't FOOKIN' think so!

yeah...if you don't go to new order gigs...you are a frigging loser...

Oh no, you think i'm a loser because I don't feel the need to go to every NO gig under the sun; how can I find the will to go on? I hope you can still find meaning in your life once NO split up; maybe you'll have to self-actualise and find a purpose by trailling NO/JD tribute bands all over the world- I'm sure you'll be consider for an OBE or maybe even a Nobel peace prize seeing as you'll be making such a 'winning' contribution to human existence.

:spit:

how about just the ones in the town where you live then?

Still doesn't apply.

BTW; seen them twice in the 'town where I live' already (London is slightly bigger than a 'town').

is it? I didn't know, thanks.

Here's a thought - maybe I was being more general than referring just to you though...

It's a pleasure...

If you'd like more information on how big London is and how to get around it you can also look up:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/

It's also available 24 hours a day!

...but doesn't it make it difficult to get around London if you insist on getting the front row seat on all those buses? :D CTB :bear:

I don't apply my need to be close to the front at NO gigs to the rest of my life.

I have even been known to sit at the back of the bus on occassion.

You wouldn't be able to get on a bus round my way.

If some bloke hailed a bus on my route but then stood outside, dithering, wondering which seats might be available for him sit in, what view he could possibly get en route and whether this would prove value for money, the bus driver would just drive off.

I don't suppose the selfsame driver would have much time with him fannying about trying to ascertain whether (a) everyone had a degree or (b) none of them looked like they had much time for football.

Thanks for that - after reading that post again, I now see that you can't spell the word "occasion".

Wow...such a vitriolic post...did I hit a sore spot???

I think that someone who has an opportunity to go to a New order gig that is quite local to them, and then opts out of it because they can't get THE seats they want is not exactly a dedicated fan. Fook me, if the order played a gig here in Austin, I'd take the worst seat in the house.

I never said you had to go to every gig under the sun, hell, I've only been able to do 4 since 2000, but I've made the effort. Then to start a thread as inane as this one, well, even YOU should be able to see why some of us have a hard time with your lack of fortitude.

Ahh well, it's time for another beer...

Going to gigs doesn't make you a dedicated fan.

I have nearly everything NO / JD and the side projects have ever released- that's what makes a fan IMHO.

Mr. Waters, just what is it that stops you from going to gigs anyway?

No, that makes you a COLLECTOR. A fan just likes the music and the band.

You're not doing very well at this, are you Craig? You're being incredibly elitist about this, me thinks.

Originally, you wanted to call yourself the Alumni which was a bit high-brow, surely? Some people here have been to school as well, you know. And college. And universities. The likes of Dr Clayhead is just that. A doctor. Then you want to call yourself the Spotters, because of some trainspotterish obsession. Do you think we're not slightly obsessed too? But well done on having nearly everything NO / JD have ever released. We've got all that too.

It's your perceived superiority which is galling me the most, like we're the lumpenproletariat, and you're somehow a cut above. You're purposely trying to divide people here and I can't see why? Perhaps you should get with the programme and admit you're just as lowdown and dirty as everyone else who appears here! New Order fans one and all.

Peace.

My question is not answered here! See, I've been to one only but I'm pretty sure I'd sell my parents if they ever played my hometown, you know. It just seems to me you're a bit obsessed with this Viking thing but dunno why.

Craig, do you realise how daft yer making yersel look here? I am thinking yer liking this publicity, which is kinda sad. Tim put it a lot more eloquently on the last page.

Time to let it go mate.

I tried letting it go a few times then someone else decided to have a pop and the cycle started again...

Anyway, consider it done; will just ignore the tossers who keep ragging me now.

Once again, i find distraction from marking books to see that Craigy has been at it again 'tooth & nail' with 'the boys'. Does this guy never 'tire' or 'tyre' of antagonism. Maybe our Alumni (digital waters) can help decide the spelling :abovelol: By the way during the summer i went to 2 seperate Univ. alumni gatherings, so Craigy - think you've been out-alumnied

i'm just a follower of the music only. How do you define a fan anyway? its different for everybody.

couldn't give a four X about hooky's DJ'ing, Barneys boat rides, Re-order, vikings, hooligans, NO disco's etc etc etc.

i only own the New Order albums, plus about three singles.. no Rest of's, no Best ofs. no mad mega mix's.

I like them Live, but its not the end of the world if i don't get to see them play everywhere, e.g the 4 song Peel gig.

For me, its just about the band producing good quality albums, that can compare favourably with their previous stuff.

People get way too deep when it comes to some of the threads on this thing.

They may well think of themselves as the most successful team in the history of English football, but they have lost every time they have played Worcester City!

I think that makes Worcester City the most successful team in the history of English football.......

It's a very moot point. We've 'qualified' for Europe just the once in our 120 year history. Unfortunately, this was in 1988 and we somehow found ourselves 'banned' despite not actually having ever done anything untoward. Hmmm. Still, it's all water under the bridge now. Sort of.

I had heard the ban was separate to the general English club ban, and was all because Mick Harford looked a bit threatening on the passport photo they submitted......

One last comment on this - I went to the Jorvik Centre in York not long ago, and it certainly smelled a lot like the crowd at a NO gig; Vikings it is. CTB :bear:
