VIKING or SPOTTER?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (in NOStory), Barney said the fans fell into two camps:

Camp1= Football Hooligan like, Camp2= Spotty Student like.

It seems the grown up terminology for Camp1 has become 'Vikings'.

Could we / should we give a grown up name to the Camp2 group?

If so, what would we call it... The 'Spotters' maybe?

But was Barney right?

How about simply THE CAMP??? It's been well established that all New Order fans are outright gayers, and Ness and Maya regularly lezz-up, so let's just get ourselves out of the collective closet.

OUT AND PROUD OF IT, I say!!!

Doesn't Alumni imply some sort of collegiate or intellectual elitism, Craig? Which ain't really on, now, is it? Or even true?

The Vikings thing wasn't even penned by the 'ardcore who follow New Order. It was first worded by Roger Lyons in Sound on Sound magazine maybe two years ago. Yes, it was in reference to a pin-badge bearing said moniker, though that was only there in citation of the Film/Soundtrack bearing the same name. Until Brett Lambe posted here asking who the Vikings were, after seeing the Sound on Sound article, I don't know of one person who'd ever used that nomenclature. But, it seems to have caught on a bit in the past couple of years. It's certainly not a club with a membership form or a dodgy handshake, there's an open invite to all who can be arsed to attend the odd-gig and go for the odd-beer. It's a very loose terminology.

It ain't exactly difficult to be both an 'ooligan and a university graduate at the same time. For as the holy bible "Green Street" teaches us, yer average casual is almost certainly a respectable middle-class professional as well a brawling naughty boy at the weekend (and maybe even in mid-week, depending on fixtures).

how about 'The Wankers' ??

That's the purpose of the thread... do people think there are two camps?

Based on the 'wankers' response; seems a nerve has been hit.

And yep 'Intellectuals' can be hooligans. There would be, as with all social groups, a scale along which people would have an affinity for.

The thrust of the thread isn't to suggest that one group would be / could be superior to the other; i'm sure that there would be equal numbers of 'wankers' in both groups (as is the norm for all social groups).

I suggest Alumni because that's what people with degrees are called; i.e. a 'spotty student' who has graduated whereas I sort of see a 'Viking' as a mature 'football hooligan'; a macho type with some kind of moral code of honour...

The Vikings is a great nickname for us lot, was back in 2002 for Finsburgh that Al got the badges made weren't it?

Vikings to me signifies a mad bunch of bastards who drink too much and travel all over to see "their" band.

And can I just say the last set of badges were a lot better than the first incarnation ;)

Woah there, Shug: you're putting extra pressure on poor Al to come up with an even better design for the next batch of gigs!!!

I'm sure the bizarre parallel dimension you live in is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. No-one calls graduates 'alumni' except poxy universities trying cling to some shred of respectability when in fact the standards in Higher Education are so apalling low that it's embarrassing. And I should know, 'cos I've got three fucking degrees and teach in a 500 year old University and I'm still a thick cunt, and would gladly trade all three of my degrees in if I could get to the QEH gig (of which I would inevitably remember very little having been on the pop with the Viking hordes all afternoon).

Digi, as was said earlier, the Vikings is just a group of people who came together at gigs. No-one sat down and said 'oooh, let's call ourselves something,' and printed out membership cards, or whatever and it was just something that was picked up on by New Order's road-crew (who originally just called us the Stalkers!). How would your new found group work, one wonders? You seem to be trying to form a group for people who DON'T do gigs and DON'T actually know one another, so I'm a bit perplexed? You, of course, are welcome to join us for a drink any time you wish, whether you be joining us as Vikings, NOOLers, or whatever. Thus far, you appear to have resisted and I'm not entirely sure why - you didn't pop your head around the door for the Audley (I'm sure you had your reasons) and you didn't get a ticket for the QEH either (yes, I know, you couldn't get the seat you wanted (you might regret that - check the ebay thread out I started earlier) but you COULD have bought a ticket, when all is said and done).

So in your 'bizarre parallel dimension' Vikings go to NO gigs rather than conquering Northern European lands as is the popular belief?

Obviously 'Alumni' is an allusive and metaphorical description, as is 'Viking'...

The question as to whether or not their are two groups of fans I think, has been answered by the Viking leaders... Now to those who don't feel Vikingified; should we have a 'spotty student' label? The Vikings are clearly upset by Alumni- any other suggestions?

i am beginning to wonder whether dw can actually read what is written or if he picks random phrases & just replies to them.

the vikings thing came from the intro music. jarvo designed a badge for the 2001 tour for those people going abroad etc for a bit of fun. it used a viking symbol due to the intro music & had some luvverly english flags on (hence shug prefering the last one) nobody said lets call ourselves vikings.

& yes - it was people THAT WENT TO GIGS. anywhere. everywhere. for the social, for the fun, for the beers, but mostly for the songs. try it. you may like it.

Like Hibster says, if you don't feel "Vikingified" you're putting way too much stress on an extremely loose term which is ultimately about as democratic as you can get. Even if you've still got problems with acne, you'll be welcomed with open arms!!

You know the problem with this DW ? By nature, its divisive - putting fans into 2 separate categories. Whereas a key part of the NOOL community is about bringing NO fans together.

Anyone who's been to a gig-meet or any other piss-up arranged thru this site knows what an inclusive atmosphere it is regardless of background or any other characteristic you care to think of.

Come out on the 12th and see first-hand how you're missing the fcuking point.

c'mon Digi

Last thing we need is more division, why try to pigeon hole New Order fans? fer fooks sake.

We are just New Order fans from all walks of life. Some wankers, some top geezers, maybe, my guess is I'd get on with every single one of you.

Fair play to the 'Vikings', I've been to NO gigs since '85 and was blissfully unware of the term until I came on this site early this year.

For me, I just went NO gigs with my mates, and ended up chatting to like minded guys/gals and had a laugh.

why seperate us when the whole fookin point of this site is to unite?

PS 'The Wankers' was a wind up.

EDIT: Looks like JG beat me to it on this point, and did it more eloquently!

We've got the 7th to get through first! Digi's coming out for that one, from what I remember!

So who will be the first self-styled Alumnus then? Go on DW, you know you are itching to!

Sorry, but Alumni is terrible, you wouldn't want to be one of them! The only University grads who get involved with Alumni activities are normally the ones who have no life after finishing their degree.

Why do we need two groups anyway? Viking's just fun to use for gig attendance, I don't think it is an identity like a football firm.

The Alumni anyone???

It's true. I keep them in my cellar. They have to sing for their supper as well.

Cue shite old joke:

Q: "What's the difference between the Three Degrees and Happy Mondays?"

A: "There's more E's in Happy Mondays."
