Contrary to what other people think I liked Dawn Zee's backing singing on Get Ready and thought she looked rather sexy on stage at Brixton and on Jools Holland. Given the strength of these 2 New Order performances I went to Berlin to see them and felt a bit let down when they started singing Crystal without any backing singer! I think Dawn Zee played the gigs in Paris but seems to have disappeared enroute to Germany. Does anyone have any ideas what happened to her? Its a bit of a mystery...

That is strange. I recorded the Monday 12th November Paris gig from a French radio station (France Inter, I think)which was broadcasting it live and you can defintely hear Dawn Zee's voice singing on Crystal and Close Range. They must have been using synchronised pre-recorded backing vocals outside the UK!

Tragically even though female i must agree with the desired outcome (just NO) although perhaps shooting them is a bit harsh - couldn't you just beat them with sticks until they agree to stop?!
Shooting them simply accelerates the process, and gets rid of the evil wailing noise sooner :)

I think it depends on the song...I think they work well on Crystal, but the backing vocals on the Substance version of Subculture are well cheesy.
BTW, I was sure I saw Dawn Zee in H&M in Manchester a couple of weeks ago.....

agreed about how awful the backup singing can be...i can't listen to "Shame of the Nation" as a result.
however, i wouldn't blame the singers. after all, it's not their fault that someone thought, "hey, let's get some backup singers in here for this!"
i'd blame whoever wrote them the part and decided that they should be in on it when it really wasn't such a good idea. which isn't always, but which does seem to happen a lot.
and though this may be sacrilege, that may include blaming the Order once in awhile...but i don't think it entirely fair to blame people who amount to being session players who are just there to do what they're told and get paid to do so. some people consider themselves lucky enough just to get paid to do music, nevermind whether it's exactly what they *want* to do or not.

Don't fret Janaki - I blame the Order quite a lot - I blame their middle-aged complacency for coming up with such bland rubbish like "Liar" and "Someone like You".... sometimes it's only fair to criticise your idols for things that they do....and backing vocals certainly rank pretty high on my list of gripes!! ;) Not to mention utterly shite remixes that do nothing to the originals except make them even worse than they already are. Pfft!
thanks, Hubert, for not threatening to flay me alive and then make strings for Hooky's bass out of my innards. ;) (although you may yet want to do that once i tell you that i actually like "Someone Like You"...:D)
some of the remixes are okay, but lately, i've been hating most of them. and some just plain did not EVER need to be done. f'rinstance, *why* would you need to do ANYTHING to "Regret"? it's a perfect song as it is...anything you do to it is going to subtract from its perfection! 
but back to the backing singer issue: some of the songs involving them don't offend me. in fact, i enjoy some of them...but i can take or leave the backing vocal in those songs. and none of them rank among my favourites.
f'rinstance, the oft-cited "Crystal"...absolutely HATE the radio edit. think it's choppy and ridiculous and much prefer the album version, the Bedrock mix radio edit (the long version of that annoys me), and/or the Corbin Dalek mix. but the backing vocal in it? could do without...but it doesn't take away from the song particularly for me, either. (hence my liking of the mixes listed above, perhaps. ^^)
...'cept for when she echoes Barney at the "every man...and every woman" lines. *then* you could drop her off a bridge and i wouldn't exactly cry about it. :evil2:

The Perfecto Mix of WORLD rules. It's excellent and I like the backing vocals on Crystal too.

That's the problem - I actually preferred that mix over the original album version on Republic - albeit grudgingly. However, the re-recorded backing vocals on that Perfecto Version were so far upfront in the mix they just hurt my poor little ears.... :D
yes, i too preferred the Perfecto mix of "World." it took a bit to get over the "backing" vocal (which IS really far up front for an alleged "backing" vocal...XD)...but as it's not in the song very much, it doesn't bother me.
*shrugs* for me, "Shame of the Nation" ranks as the best example of backing vocals at their worst. *shudders*
just thought of a connected instance wherein a backing vocal is actually quite good, and actually ADDS to the song in question...although it's not an NO song proper.
Electronic's "When She's Gone." Astrid Williamson has a lovely, airy, ethereal backing vocal that shows up in only a few key places, stays in the background...and is in fact a good example of the human voice integrating itself into a musical tapestry.
in other words, it *fits*. and well. which such things SHOULD do, if one is going to do them.
