Yeah, I noticed the first half of the book mentioned the Order a few times, but didn't expand on it. Interesting that the first (older - about 36/37?) lad was into the Order then got wrapped up in the whole Acid House scene, whereas the second (younger - 28?) lad could only bang on about the Roses and O-bloody-asis.

Bought this a few weeks ago but haven't got round to picking it up yet, any good?. I suddenly feel motivated towards it.
Yes it's a good read both Newport County and the famous C.F.C get good write up's[both well deserved] enjoy.
I've read it, but it didn't impress me greatly. I'm no shrinking violet and I've witnessed some scrapes in my time, but the only time I have ever felt intimidated at a football match was this season at Ninian Park. Fifty-odd blokes down each side of the away pen, and all they did was stare at us for 90 minutes..never looked at the game once. Then on the way out, a policeman (not a steward, but an officer of the law) tells us to get straight in our car and not to stop until we're over the Severn Bridge. Kind of makes you believe that they don't quite have control of the situation.
On the other side of the coin, I had mixed feelings about going to Millwall when we played them in the Worthington Cup last season. When we scored first it got ugly for a couple of seconds, but a quick chorus of "We're gonna get our fucking heads kicked in" got them laughing.
There's better books on the subject. The BBC book for one, and any of the Chelsea stuff. Cass Pennant's new book is out now too, I believe, which should be a cracker of a read. Especially for anyone who remembers the 'Hooligan' documentary on the ICF in 1985.
The Cardiff book just seemed to gloss over stuff too quickly - the two lads included could surely have done a book each and put in far more detail. eg the last chapter of the older lad's section (the one who was into the Order) where he suddenly got into Acid House and was still promoting dance events ten years later. All in about 500 words. Pointless.
Having a vested interest in this, people should perhaps have a look at the play-off spots in this seasons Div.2 race. Stoke vs. Cardiff, at Millenium stadium, in play off final a distinct possibility. Wouldn't want to be a copper that day.
Book sounds good, though: is it interviews with Cardiff fans? I didn't realise they could speak.......

Not read many football hoolie books apart from one of the first ones which was written by an Arsenal fan and there was also one about the Aberdeen Soccer Casuals in the late 80's.
Given that Blues, Millwall, Burnley and possible W*lv*s are likey to make the play-offs this season I would suspect that the sales of Burberry, Stone Island and Aquascutum will go through the roof - its like 1985 all over again in the current casual fashion stakes.
Given that Wolves have - touchwood - blown automatic promotion, I'd just like to share my theory that there were in fact ELEVEN commandments when Moses came down from the mountain, and the eleventh (which got chipped off somewhere along the way) was: WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS SHALT NEVER BE PROMOTED TO TOP-FLIGHT ENGLISH FOOTBALL. OH NO, NOT EVER.

You're thinking of Jay Allen's "Bloody Casuals" and probably Colin Ward's "Steaming In".
The BBC book by Steve Cowens is probably the best of the current crop as it goes from the Casual early 80's, right the way through the 90's.
Read a Bristol Rovers (of all things!) book recently and it was set in the 70's so couldn't really relate to it but the fella was OBSESSED with music and fashion and wrote fairly well so was very entertaining thoughout..

The first time I came across any trouble at matches was on my ninth birthday in the very late 70's and people seemed to have progressed to Harringtons and Fred Perry's by this stage.
They had the lot in the 70's - wing collars and flares, Clockwork Orange boiler suits with top hats and umbrellas, butcher's coats, Bay City Roller tartans, donkey jackets, punks, then skins.
All of which were, basically, sh*te.

Flicked through the Soul Crew book last night, excellent pics of Cardiff-ManU from 74/75, all kitted out in full on Bay City Roller gear. Sounded like it was about 10,000-a-side.
Liked the Jay Allen book, that was the first one of it's kind I read. The BBC book is full of shite IMHO. Their run ins with Leeds are well embellished & how come they had cock all of a rep throughout the last 20 years?. That said, got a Millwall mate, who used to do loads of England away & got to know some Blades very well - said they were a good set of lads.

What with this thread and yesterdays earliest memories one, anyone remember a t.v. programme called 'Rocky O'Rourke'? could be stretchig the grey cells a bit, think it came out mid seventies. He had the archetypal scally look at the time, checked bomber jacket with fake fur collar, longish hair, and flares.

I have to agree on the BBC[Sheffield Utd] book,i don't think they admit they got done at all[apart from the F.A Cup in 92'in Camden] so it sounded like another 'Super-Firm' bollox.'Steaming In' by Colin Ward was pretty accurate and honest,just like 'Guvnors' by Mickey Francis, anyway come on ENGLAND'

'One Summer' was indeed a classic. Wish they'd re run Billy & Icky's adventures. Always remember them running away from home to a remote part of Wales which Icky knew & reckoned was 'sound la'. Turned out it had been a school camping trip & of course there were fuck all tents there this time, in fact fuck all anything. Billy gave him a right bollocking.
This was closely matched by 'Scully'. Elvis Costello's 'Paint the Town Red' was the themetune. Typical Channel 4 quality programming from about 1983-85.
Anyone remember Ear Say ? another Channel 4 offering from the same era. Good show apart from that irritating Cockney wanker who presented it. Gary Crowley I think from GLR.

Awaydays - great shout, plenty of JD references in this an all. Loved this book, all about Tranmere Scallies & set in the Liverpool - Chester area, my old stomping ground so could relate to some of the places. Isn't Kevin Sampson the ex manager of The Farm?
Nick Varley!! fookin ell, you are quite right, Parklife is a good read (5 stars in Four Four Two) & I know why you like it, loads of LUFC refs in it on account of Nick being a big Leeds fan. He's also a good mate of mine, went to Villa together on Saturday. He'll piss himself when I tell him he's been namechecked in this place. We were in a boozer before the game, with him trying to tell me that The Smiths were better than New Order in the 80s & that REM were better than the pair of 'em. Fook off I said.:D
These days he's the editor of icons.com, which hosts players web sites. He was up at Melwood (Liverpool's training ground) last Friday interviewing Riise. After meeting him on arrival, Riise excused himself for 5 mins, then proceeded to play Pool for the next 2 1/2 hours with whoever was about while Nick waited patiently for him. The bloke is a total arse & openly tells people that Liverpool is just a stepping stone (subconscious Farm ref - sic) for him before he goes to Real Madrid! Good mates with Hyppia, rest of the players don't want to know.
