I'm afraid this is the case. "Rock music", in the widest meaning of the word, including mainstream pop to indie, is going to end like jazz. It won't ever die, it will settle on the current status, and if you think about it nothing new has really been happening since Kurt Cobain died. Grunge already was an alternative take on 70s hard rock, but nobody can invent anything from ground zero, you always need an inspiration, so we could say that the late 80s - early 90s were the last innovative age, with grunge, shoegazing and baggy... since then it went downhill indeed: Britpop, poor quality post punk revival, Britpop revival, generally safe and predicatable pop and rock following well tested standards. All we can expect in the near future is that the scene stays like it is, which is almost exactly the same of 10 years ago... Think about the changes between 1956 and 1966, between 1966 and 1976... 1976 and 1986... 1986 and 1996... they are amazing if compared to what happened in the last 10 years. The problem is that when jazz stopped being innovative rock'n'roll was just emerging to replace it for the general music consumer, while this time nothing seems to replace the agonizing rock'n'roll... Actually all seems to go worse, the few great bands are almost ignored, the underground grows but offers little quality, the mainstream is looking increasingly like a parody of itself. Still, paying much attention, something good is left, not enough for a proper scene, but we can always stick to the few promising bands, like Mew.
For a genuine music "movement" to happen there are three ingredients required:
A new music A new fashion A new drug
There have been three genuine, groundbreaking, music cultures which have occured in the last 40 years:
Hippy Punk Acid House
And nothing since.
All three scenes changed everything, musically and culturally.
Will there be another one? I like to think so. But if there is, it will not be us oldies involved. It will be the teenagers who rebel against all that has gone before.

From my generation you'd have to include 2-Tone / Ska in there. Certainly ever fella I know from perhaps 36-40 was touched by this.
Everyone dressing the same, that Rude Boy stylee. One of my defining memories from this era was one lad turning up to school in Spats! Thought they were the dogs bollocks! To this day I'll drive by his house and remember him for wearing Spats into school (oh, and for nearly getting his ear bitten off in a fight, but that's another story).
And teenagers today will never ever send as cool a song as 'Ghost Town' to no.1 again. End of an era.

No argument that New Order's best days are behind them, but why does it follow that they should therefore have split up years ago? (Come to think of it, they _did_ split up years ago, I guess you mean they should have stayed splut...er...splitted...up).
And people want to know what you listen to because, for some strange reason, its much easier to attack than defend in this sort of argument. Presumambly for the same reason attack ads dominate US politics. I wonder why that is?
