What did you think?

Gotta say I'm a bit pissed off with this new professional New Order - fuckin hate it when they mime - surely this performance won't boost the sales - so what was the problem with them not playing live? Are they under instructions now? Come on guys - sort it out! They all looked a bit uncomfortable to me - loved Barney's dancing though - some things NEVER change:lol:

On the other hand it's still great to see em on TOTP:lol:

His miming was poor but then again its never been particually terrific has it!

To me tho it looked like the were having a ball! Barney was especially animated and dancing like a madman! Hooky looked like he was giving it all as always. Good to see em live though!

Anyone notice Barneys going a bit grey round the sides?????

So who do you think was miming the best. Barney or John Simm?

Bit of a non event really wasn't it?

Barney (though trying to show off his maneouvres) looked as if he'd been tied down, could just tell he wanted to leap around more!

Hooky's face however whilst doing his 'drumming' was priceless!

Good to see 'em they were looking good but might as well just have stood there while the BBC muppets played the CD.

Don't mind the grey hair myself, never really gone for blonde blokes anyway...

Super, now does anybody have a recording so that those of us on the other side of the ocean can see? And sorry, Shug, but the problem with NO playing live is that Barney can't sing!!! Still gotta love 'em nonetheless.

And Shug now that you've received a promotion (congrats by the way) does that mean we're gonna see a new and improved more mature and responsible you? ;) No more drunken misspellings and all?

Utter Utter NON EVENT!! :mad2:

Not only did they mime but the song was EDITED DOWN (second verse and chorus missing - didn't any of you notice that??) thus further confirming my suspicions about there being an anti-New Order conspiracy (as if to say: let's grudgingly welcome them on the programme and pretend they really aren't on stage, let's limit the amount of air time they have by cutting the song a minute short, etc etc...). Notice how muted their reception was, compared to, say, Doves?? Oasis sounded shite too - Liam sounded like he was losing his voice there! THREE MANCHESTER BANDS ON THE SAME PROGRAMME !!! - How come no big fuss was made of this, surely the first time this has ever happened???

Bollocks.... I hate TOTP, watching it just insults my intelligence. (and did you see those wankers Pay As U Go prancing about in that boxing ring? Fook me.....hilarious or what??? :nonono:   )

The Beeb are better off ignoring the Order in future - that "performance" can't have done wonders for next Sunday's Chart position (down the top 50 with an anvil round its neck probably - more so than if they WEREN'T featured - the way tradition has it)

i've got to say, i thought it was embarrassing. the first time i've really cringed at something they've done. i can't stand miming but if your gonna mime then do it properly or just show the vid. plus the fucking edit was bollox, must've only lasted for 2 mins max.

pile of shite. they should have stayed at home.

if you've got BBC America, they're showing it here tomorrow. check out their website for more details on the schedule. it's on at 6pm CST, i believe.

and if you don't, and still need a copy, i'll be taping it. give me an e-mail and we'll get it sorted out. :D

...even if it is as bad as some of you say.

i look forward to seeing the dancing tomorrow though, dammit! :D

SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!!!!!!!!! Bloody Grandads! What do the fucking audience know??

New Order weren't made for Top Of The Pops.

Trouble is, I don't know if that's to be meant as a compliment or an insult these days....

it seems most people prolly weren't made for TotP...at least, so far as i can gather from bits i've watched since it's been on here.

'cept, perhaps, for the likes of Kyle E. :violent: :violent: :violent: :violent:

i still stand by my earlier assertion that my favourite moment involving her was the video for Nick Cave's "Where the Wild Roses Grow." :evil4:

(not that i'm, uh, saying anything. certainly not. )

I don't think it was *that* bad! Bloody great just to see them on TOTP's. I dunno, people moan about the lack of exposure then when they do get it - they moan about the miming - who cares??! Best TOTP's in years I think - Pulp, The Doves (fantastic track) and New Order back with a stomper of an electronic song and another tart from Neighbours. Switched off when Oasis came on though - Bliss ;)

that entire album is really brilliant as well. and the tag line from all the adverts that i saw that went with it. "Murder Ballads: Ten Songs That All End the Same Way."

Is it just me or did Steve Morris look he was suffering from constipation? Gotta give it to New Order though...in their mid-40's,still have that honest quality, plus a cracking tune.

It's only "Top Of The Pops",they were'nt taking it seriously..neither should you lot.

Never said it was a bad performance, love seeing em on totp - just pissed off cos it was mimed (badly) maybe it's all the years of being spoiled with the live performances - but that's what made the bastards special;) As fer Stephen - I agree with Mr Sweeney:lol:

I think its totally deliberate on the part of Stephen though - you can tell he absolutely hates miming - he thinks the whole notion of it is pants, thus he treats it with the disdain it deserves..... Why else does he look so indifferent? - he isn't even playing the right beats if you watched him carefully!! :D

Here are a few of the comments from my packed living room while the order were on TOTP. These are all people who have never heard of new order.

"He looks like a caveman!!"

"Good track though"

"Didn't they do world in motion?"

"when are oasis on?"

"That guy on bass looks fucked, he's gonna have a heart attack"

"I bet the singers son is saying 'oh god! dad! stop dancing like a prick!'"

"Is that john simm?"

"I want to see that film"

"Happy mondays are in that"

"Who are happy mondays?"

"Who are doves?"

Some of these i thought were quite hilarious. Especially the first one.

DOES NOT BODE WELL FOR GIGS THIS SUMMER...BECAUSE IF THEY WOULD HAVE HAD THIS SONG SORTED LIVE...IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED LIVE TONIGHT....I FEAR LAZYITIS HAS SET IN AND NOTHING IS GONNA CHANGE REGARDING SET LISTINGS FOR THE SUMMER....HOOKY LOOKED SO OLD!!!!

Not necessarily my fellow greyhound homing friend, they mimed Crystal even though they can play that live. Regards set listings, I don't really care cos I've only seen 'em twice  so anything's a bonus. Paris will be the telling truth I think. Incidentally (like anyone cares!) 'Barney' had his first run around Hall Green today (I assume after mentioning running everyone will know I DON'T mean Sumner) and did very well. Marty also won mummy a few beer tokens :D

Do any of you know if BBC America shows Top of the Pops? I just got A US Direct TV Satalite and I get all the Pay per veiws, Porn and HBO I ever dreamed, and for free!

I just answered my own question.

Yes we do get TOTP on BBC America. And it's on Saturday. So it should be the repeat of New Order.

Check here for the times in your part of the country. In Mountain time it starts at 5:00pm. So set your recorders. I'm sure BBC Canada will have it to, but you need Digital Cable or Satalite to get it

Im not really familiar with Top of the Pops because it isn't shown out here ... But is there a particular reason why most groups mime on the show ? Like why are they unable to perform as they normally do ?

If the band that I play in ever gets the opportunity to play on a show like that (VERY unlikely but I can dream), I shall never stoop so low !!

TOTP has been running since the early 60's over here mate - almost all the bands on it mimed - probably due to record company policy - there were only a few who actually played live - can't remember who (I'm a wee bit sozzled;) ) During the early 90's - they changed their policy and all bands had to do it live - fuckin disaster it was - Happy Mondays Stinkin Thinkin being one of the worst - but at the same time - the funniest!!! Things soon went back to normal - but New Order always played live - that's what has annoyed me about the last 2 - credibility slipping?

Did anyone tape that TOTP-"experience" so we can put it to the video archives ??? In Germany we only get Westlife on TOTP...and that's not my kind of entertainment...

Dunno what everyone's whinging about. If the Order hadn't have been on TOTP I would've been in the pub still, so would've missed the bird from Neighbours. Er, wow!

Did Barney have a monitor? He looked down to his left an uncomfortable number of times. A monitor to mime? I've heard it all now.. .

And why bother having Phil Cunningham there? Perhaps they've dragged him back from LA early cos they've already started practising for the forthcoming gigs?

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Barney looked younger and managed to keepo the dodgy dance moves in check. Nice to see Hooky on the dodgy SynDrums again. The only down side was that they edited the fuckin edit. They should've cut down that awful 5 minute dirge by Pulp instead

Awful 'dirge' by Pulp? Odd how you can say that when OASIS were on with another lump of retro 60's shite ;) What tossers bought this single then eh...? Own up....

Hello Seb! It was well worth the seven month wait for the show, probably enhanced by the fact that the Crystal Ballroom is a non-seated venue. All I'll say about the show right now is that Warren Ellis is a maniac on stage. I know you'll enjoy the show, and I'll think about you around 7 o'clock Pacific time on Monday.

And :hi: to Alyssa.

Well I just watched it on BBC America, That was shamefull!!! Almost as bad as when they mimed Regret on Baywatch. The song was only 2:58 in length, was it even worth their time to show. But at least they put the heart into it. You would almost think they were playing live exept Barney's not very good at it.

Well at least I got to see them again.

I have only seen Regret & Here to stay on TOTP and they mimed both. I know they mined Crystal, have they ever played live on the show?

just watched the tape of TotP from earlier today.

and yeah, it was rather depressing, really. good and bad...as many have commented, good to see them getting some sort of promotion. but the miming thing really, really, really, really, really sucked. though the faces Hooky was making whilst playing the syndrum toys were highly entertaining...and i agree with whoever said he looked like he was about to collapse! and about Stephen...he looked none too amused. the truncation of the song was rather annoying, too.

granted, as i taped it, i fast-forwarded through most of the show, pausing in spots to listen to a moment or two of whatever was going on. 'cept for a few people. but it seemed to me that everyone else performed their respective songs live except for the Order and Holly Valance. which is kinda...depressing. :nonono:

but it leaves me rather torn...again, the notion of getting attention, but...argh.

not very impressive. rather depressive, really.

wish i'd gotten to see previous performances of theirs on TotP...done *live*. :D

hey Iain, no problem. seriously, let me know if you'd like a copy. :D

BBCA is indeed available on DirecTV's system...not sure if it's also included as part of any other satellite networks. however, i DO know that it's also available on some digital cable systems...at my old house, we had AT&T Digital and we did indeed get BBCA there, too. which was nice. we switched over to DirecTV after the move, cos we found out it was actually CHEAPER to have a satellite dish than to get digital cable! (at the old house, we couldn't have had a dish, cos it was a townhome and they had stupid rules... :nonono: )

but really, the only reason we have any sort of special TV-viewing apparatus at all is so we can watch F1... :D

(however, there are definite perks. and no, Eastenders is not one of them. :nonono: )

best of luck on the finals, though!

I thought it was well funny. Not brilliant for their credibility though...why was theirs the only song edited though? Much as I like the Doves track, I'd ahve prefered to see that cut down by a couple of minutes + added the NO track

did see holly valance miming on T4 on sunday am though, which was nice...

re the 3 manc bands on the same totp question they had the mondays & the roses on the same totp once - think they both made their debut on totp on the same show but cant think of 3 on same one off top of head

Well at least Pulp did it 100% live! Remember Hooky saying on MTV how much he liked Pulp especially when they looked crap on TV. He liked the fact they didn't seem to care. Pity they didn't try and re-create the video which (as I'm sure most of you may know) is in the style of Band Aid with lookalikes taking it in turn to do the vocals. Liam G, George M, Robbie W, Kylie M etc. Even better is on the Pulp CD2 they have a couple of bad cover versions of Pulp songs, including Disco 2000 by... Nick Cave! Back on topic to the off topic postings in this thread.

Iain---no problem. sad thing about those documentaries...i'm in your camp there, wishing i could see them but unable to. BBC America is indeed cool for some things, but a lot of others...we either don't get at all, or else get them LOOOONG after they were aired in the UK. that's why i was so shocked that there's hardly any delay at all between when TotP is shown there vs. when it's shown here. though with the nature of such a show, i supposed if you were going to bother, having next to no delay would be imperative, really. ;)

yeah, it does seem silly...and since i don't have ready access to T-05 videocassettes...tell you what, though. if i do get hold of something useful (and longer than 2 minutes or so) to stick on the tape as well, i'll let you know...?

...when i finally get a region-free DVD player, perhaps this will come into play. :evil4:

Iain, i'd love to help you, but i must confess total ignorance of what Room 101 is all about...

...though i trust it is a most fun and worthwhile diversion, yes? :evil4:

all the same, i can only encourage if necessary. i don't tell other people what to do. *beams innocently* :D

Scared?? scared??

Of course I am....I'm fooking petrified me.... I'm shaking right to the core at the prospect of it..... In fact I'm so nervous I'm considering hiring some bodyguards to help me with gettin the whole thing rolling....been scouting the profile pics as well just to get some inspiration...... let's see then...... well you're no good for a start cos you look like you could fit into that trophy that's being held aloft....... Bagpuss could potentially be fatal if anyone dissed him or looked at him the wrong way but then again, I've seen Timbo's other pics and they don't particularly scream out "Bruiser" to me.....um....Jarvo looks a contender, cos he's bald and mean-looking.....ditto Hubert as he's a proper SKIN 'EAD an' all! - well 'ard!.....Janaki? Funny how appearances can be deceptive - she certainly plays a mean guitar...so maybe I could consider her too!.....Gnu? Well, he eats berries, so what sort of a lightweight is that??......

Room 101 is where you truly get to know Martin for what he is :\pissedoff: Shug explained to me what room 101 is, Apparently it's a tv show in Britain where people rant about the things they hate. I never actually seen it so my recollection may be wrong but here it became a thread where you could rant and explain what you hated and why. Shug was in charge previously so he had to read all the posts and banish everything unless he wanted to be a right bastard, which was most of the time for my requests.

So, for example, I would describe how I hate going to school and hate doing homework and hate taking tests and writing papers and Martin would say BANISHED. I would then approach all my teachers and tell them to &*@#$*! off because Martin banished all the crap I had to do and I would get straight As for doing nothing!

Whatever pissed you off or bugged you, put it in room 101 and BANISHED!!

Marty, do I figure in your scared list now I've updated my profile pic? ;)

Iain: thanks for the explanation. i think, done correctly, such a thing could be fun. and scary. deliciously scary, maybe? :D

Marty: heh, and you've yet to actually HEAR me play! though i'll say this: my first guitar pick ever looked as though it had had bites taken out of it. i play very, very violently. though i've still yet to poke my eye out with any strings i've broken whilst flailing around...i know i've got the pick somewhere around, too. when i find it again, i'll scan it up as proof. ('course, it didn't help that my first-ever guitar had action that was much like a cheese cutter... )

and Cheeky and Marty: i'm definitely not in badass contention with the updated profile pic i've just put up. the Monkey here could probably take me going on that photo. or so it would look...you may well be right. appearances are damned deceiving. :evil4:

That's it. Janaki - I want you in my next band. For definite. If I can I will even pay your air fare for you to fly over here and jam with me!! ;) I cannot play guitar to save my life - save for one chord mantras a la Stereolab/Faust/Krautrock... and am still desperately trying to learn the bass (a la Kim "Ultra Cool" Deal of course)... but I'm a keyboard and drum abuser all the same. Not that I know how to play the keyboards that is - and I'm certainly NO fucking chin-stroking chain-smoking pile-stoking muso on drums either - but like they say - being a TRUE punk means not knowing how to actually play, so I consider myself a true punk in that respect..... :D :D

Darlings - CM and JJ - I shall have to update my profile pic soon also as I'm sick of wearing that eyeball on me head forever more..... guess you'll have to ready yourselves for the genuine shock of seeing me IN REAL LIFE!!!.....

AaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggHHhhhHhhhhhhhHHhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

   looking forward to it...the Unveiling, i mean. though i really had just presumed you were really a Resident at heart this entire time. ;)

as for my playing...i never said i was particularly good. nor that i really knew how to play...am self-taught and learn pretty much by ear. so i'm sure i do things wrongly. but it's fun to make noise...that's always how i've done it. :evil4: and i really do play violently. it's mostly to do with the guitar i'd learned on...you HAD to have very violent attack to get anything out of it. and you had to throttle it to hold things down cos the action was so bad...and cos i've got rather small hands. so it, er, corrupted me.

and as mentioned previously, i am currently doing a lot of keyboard molesting abusing myself. need to get a decent keyboard of my own, though...so, must save money! and sell soul find part-time additional job at record store over the summer! have never played drums, though...i used to think i'd want to, but haven't ever got round to it.

HAVE played bass...and enjoyed it muchly. if i had more money, i'd actually have one, and of course would play it. basses are excellently good...and i REALLY adore standup ones.

...but it seems like i'm similar to your drum and keyboard criminalities in my methods of guitar-playing offence. :evil4:

still want me in your band, then? ;)

er, punktastic.

YES.

Plus - you'd be a dab hand when it comes to the demented screaming-thru-a-megaphone that takes place on a few of the tracks (particularly the last "song" on the first album "You're Gonna Get Your Fucking Head Kicked In", and the first track on the last one "TYOT / Ten Years Of Torture"). ;)

is that the song's title or the album's title? either way, works for me. :thumb:

though i've still got to work on a problem i share in common with our beloved ickle Barneykins. which would be the minor issue that i have with singing and playing at the same time.

i'm better with that playing keyboard than i am with guitar. but i still need to work on both. and i really ought to pick up my guitar again...haven't really played it in a couple of years, 'cept for very, very sporadically. it's very sad...it must feel so neglected...

(though perhaps it's breathing a sigh of relief, reconsidering... )

Indulge an old gear geek, would you?

What specific syndrum toys was Hooky abusing? I haven't seen it.

Roland Octapad? DrumKAT? Mattel Synsonics? Human skulls?

I'm the sad sort who gets off on seeing Kurt Cobain using my vocal mic on the "Unplugged" special.

...actually, i can completely understand that urging, Gnu.

sadly, cannot identify this toy on sight. will have to watch it carefully again and see if i can figure it out...and/or hope someone else here knows off the top of their head and can indulge you.

or if you want a *copy* of it, Gnu, i can send you one... just mail me and we can set that up... :D

OR...(though i don't know how long this might take, as i've got a LOT to do lately) i can whip out my video capture card and actually USE it for something useful, like taking scary stills from the TotP broadcast and putting them up to amuse you and others... :evil4:

the sight of Hooky nearly foaming at the mouth over this particular toy is highly, highly entertaining. and scary.

You live to give, Janaki. Thanks for the offer, but I'm a happier man not having seen the TOTP "performance." I'd rather listen to Lipps, Inc. than see Barney mime. And in my fantasy rock star life, I'd like to think I'd die before I'd (lip) sink so low.

I was going to hook up the VCR and capture some old video of "the band" covering "Rid of Me," but the VCR's in the other room, and it's just so far away, and dusty, and I'm too friggin' lazy.

 no problem, Gnu. see? i'm not all full of guns. i share, when i can.

and i don't blame you one bit, honestly. sick curiosity drove me to it, but i was pretty sure i wouldn't really enjoy it...how CAN you, knowing that they're going to MIME, fer chrissakes? :nonono:

still...if you want, i can capture just one good shot of Hooky and the drums, so you can see it...that way no miming is involved. though the frightening visage of Hooky foaming at the mouth and raging at the drums may haunt you in your dreams...and i refuse to be held responsible for any such actions should the result, since i've warned you now and all...
