I certainly came back from South America under the impression this was almost definitely 'it', and that if they did bother to do anything again, ever, it would be way, way off in the future. And certainly not during this coming year. And this wasn't as a result of any reporter's comments I read. They didn't appear 'til after I was back in Blighty.
I doubt anyone else who went over would contradict me.
So the reporter's comments weren't taken out of proportion at all, from what I can see. Well, if they were, it was only by people who post here and who love a good moan.

Al, about your impressions in SA. Were they based on watching band interaction on/off stage or from conversations you had with key personnel?
Oddly, it was Hooky who seemed the most despondent about it all and now it's Steve who appears the most upbeat. Wondering if it's a case of contrasting opinions within the band that are yet to be resolved. Another one of their infamous communication impasses.
Again, Steve seems genuinely excited about Corbijn's movie while Hooky's been less than complimentary recently.
Hopefully the movie enjoys a decent run and the associated media junket presses the lads into agreeing on some plans for 2007. Have they fulfilled contract obligations at Warner now? Perhaps we'll see the WFTSC off-cuts on Wilson's F4...

I know it doesn't matter, but that interview were made by a reporter from Argentina, not a Brazilian one.
I agree it would be kind of cool the "last tour on our continent" thing, but I don´t think it will happen. After all, a final concert at Manchester Apollo (or something like that) is the perfect excuse for travelling to England
Even if they did split up now,the ONLY thing we'd go without is gigs (although its a big thing). We had a constant stream of releases from both JD and NO from 1993-2001.
And they may be under contract to deliver this "other" album they had half done,which could mean another Republic but who know?

I know it doesn't matter, but that interview were made by a reporter from Argentina, not a Brazilian one.

other thing that´s sad: believing long time fans as myself (yeah, that tongue in cheek comment affects me since i started the "end" thread) are happy because NO splits. do you think i give a shit about them calling it a day in my country? i prefer a million times them to keep playing amazing music and comming back more times to play in my country. i just reproduced an interview that happened to be edited in an argie newspaper, period. i wonder how in earth that could be mistaken with "joy" about their split!

I did take special care to mention that not all Brazillian or Argentinian fans had behaved in this way so I wouldn't take my points personally.
However, I do remember (at the time) a few random posters appearing and banging on about how New Order's last tour was to be in Brazil/Argentina as if it was some sort of badge of honour. It irked me because I thought it was A) far too presumptuous and B) far too much emphasis was being placed on this one interview.
Lo and behold a few months later the crux of the 'split' interview is proven to be bollocks (well according to Steve anyway)

Sorry man, but I think you misunderstood everything!!! There is nothing out of proportion. First of all this has nothing to do with a brazilian reporter... Stephen Morris and Hook gave an interview to an ARGENTINIAN journalist... this is a little bit different... as if THAT time Morris and Hooky gave dubious answers is not the newspaper problems.... On the contrary, the amount of "New Order are finished" or "New Order quit" threads the interview inspired in this forum alone was staggering. As for it being Hooky or Steve's fault, I've yet to be convinced they weren't misquoted as musicians so often are. People jumped to a dodgy conclusion mostly because Hooky and Steve speculated that it could be their last gig because they don't plan anything much in advance. Big difference from "we're splitting and fucking off for good" don't you think?

I'm assuming that while Hooks is busy with DJ and 3Bass Bernard and the other members of the band have been busy writing new songs and someday a new album will appear out of nowhere.
There is always excitment when a new album is released.
