HEATED DEBATE #2

Let's face it, New Order started with a dignity rating of 100, mostly inherited from Joy Division. Since then it's as if they've slowly but steadily lost that dignity year after year. I still think some of their music's good but the other side of NO that was just as important, the way they did things, is now down to zero as far as I'm concerned. You can list the things that have degraded - the sleeves, the set lists, miming, the 101 best of's, etc, etc. they used to be really special now they're just another band sadly. Mind you, I said the same thing in 1983 when I first heard Blue Monday - 'the bast**ds have totally sold out with this disco crap and now he's bloody dyed his hair blond and Hooky's is over his ears' !!!

Austrian vintage Liebfraumilch if I`m not mistaken !! Ja Bitte Schon :D:
I've had this argument/discussion already on a mailing list for Underworld, so I guess I can air my feelings on this topic. And I'm assuming that if you're posting on a board for New Order you prolly don't think they're washed up anyhoo.
Yes, it is hard to maintain consistent levels of creativity and quality for twenty months more or less twenty plus years, but if they're willing to do the work and they still have the energy and the desire, who am I to tell them what to do?
You would think people who wubbed Underworld would give some leeway to New Order. Granted, Underworld changed its style drastically, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who think Underwould should have stayed deader than dead. Honestly. ![]()
Then again, I may be biased, cos I think New Order sounds plenty fresh.
And can you trust people who think that Destiny's Child is the bee's knees? Pop, yesh, but quality r'n'b? Methinks not.
As they continue to make good quality music the only issue is surely with the perceived image?
This has indeed tired if not waned over the years, but i personally think they dont give a flying fuck and nor should we. They have and always will be about the music and their passion for performing their music.
I think that splitting up for 8 years probably refreshed them creatively - if they'd been churning out albums every other year (such as U2) I've no doubt they'd sound knackered and shit.
I don't know if they're washed up per se, but I do wonder if the initial spark that they had, going back to Blue Monday (or even further, to Transmission) is still as potent as it once was. What I mean is, never mind the hits, as long as there's some trace of substance to the songs, than no they shouldn't stop. But if they turn into a greatest-hits package with nothing new to keep me interested, I'll just have to retreat to my room with my treasured copies of Low-life and PCL to remind me of their 'glory days'. Being a big fan of Here To Stay, if they can keep up the quality control for at least 2 to 3 more years, release one last masterpiece (Get Ready is almost good enough to end a career on, but not quite), and perhaps tour the States again, then call it a day, that would be great. As long as they don't become a punchline like the Rolling Stones......
there music is still good, even if 98% of the planet don't know it...of they want to continue, they should
I love New Order. I think they will keep it going for as long as they can because they need the money. I would hate to see them split up but I don't think its too far off.
On TOTP they looked terrible, almost sold out looking, miming...
One more album and I would say if this isn't their last, its over. And although that will be sad, maybe it will be a good thing. ![]()
New Order had dignity and respect??? Oh dear, I seem to have missed out on that one!!!!
Actually, I say let them make records as long as they want...who knows, maybe some day they could tour with Steve Miller...
but in all seriousness...I still enjoy their music much more than anything else out there...is it as sharp and "pushing the envelope" as it used to be? no, but it is still better than all the crap played on the radio stations here in Dallas.
So I say, more power to the boys..and Gillian should she ever come back...
NewOrder sucks!! :\puke:
Depeche Mode and Erasure are the coolest!!
Did I mention that I really dig N'Sync as well?

...i see exam time has driven you to the bottle again, eh Iain...? ![]()
( and if you ARE hitting up that bottle, now's the time for that dance you promised! ;) )
They really should have split in 1990. ![]()
Number 1 album the year before. Number 1 single that year (albeit a rather naff one).
What better way than to quit whilst on top??
i think they've still got it and i never saw their creative spark ever had a peak and a decline. i think their ideas and their creativity just change and mutate, and that's the key to any band's lasting power. the bands that fade into mediocrity are those who never change their sound or "formula" and are just trying to relive their glory days. new order has changed with the times and you can see that progression, so i think they'll stay around for quite a while...unless one of them dies...
Heehee.
I'm fine with New Order. (That would be a duh, hush Janaki, stop bringing up the half naked pictures of Barney pre-manboobs. :p) I just think the lot on the ML were being snobs. That liked Destiny's Child. *koff koff*
.......
What's wrong with Nsync? :D

I am pure and innocent, so I have no idea what you meant by that remark. However, since it is the exploding batter pink haired grrrl, I will assume nothing but ill will was behind your words, so~!
:violent2:
I think there is a big reason that they are still around! I don't think that NO should retire. I do think that Get Ready is a fantastic album. Dawning of a new era for them. I think that musically they may have ignited the spark again that has made them who they are today. I think that this is a new time for them and they are starting over as a band. I myself am looking forward to whats in store for us in the NO department!
Now, Depeche Mode
, is a band that needs to throw in the fucking towel! They are done, but NO, they still have some great tunes left in them old bones of theirs!

Let's put Duran Duran as another band that belongs on this list of hasbeens.
I will not respond to delusional girls with pink hair, cos then they feel validated. Wouldn't want that. :D
'course not, Jae Young. and it's not like everyone here doesn't know that (as you said yourself) you're me anyway... ;)

also, can we add INXS to this list? my god. and they're coming to my town soon.

after washing machine i declared that sonic youth had lost it and should retire. i was obsessed with the old material, comparing everything to confusion is sex. once i gave their most recent releases a fair chance i ended up loving them. they evolved into more abstract and minimalist guitar sounds blah blah blah but anyway, i saw them live twice in 2000 and once again, and they were fantastic! they played most of their new album, but dug extensively back to their earliest material to make the setlist (which was NOT the same every night). my point is, THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR THE ORDER.
blondie should have never reunited. debbie harry's voice ain't what it used to be
who agrees?
