Still don't see how you could qualify Finsbury 87 as either 'boring' or 'mundane' - thought that was a prime example of the band at the very peak of their powers.

Finsbury was certainly all-action in 1987 in terms of the crowd, but the setlist was just about a what's what of every song I didn't want to hear at that stage, and what they played was as important for me as being there. A good gig for me was one that contained my favourite songs, more than anything. For me, they became very boring live in mid-1987, they may have been at the peak of their powers but I didn't really enjoy any of the gigs between October 86 and 2002.

Chippenham wasn't that bad, was it? Gloucester was better on that tour though. Bristol 84 was a cracker, always nice to get two separate encores, not a regular occurrence. 84 was a good year I thought.

For me it was Nottingham Palais in 1984. First time I saw NO and got right down the front. Remember Hook being in a bad mood and just giving off Evils to everyone crowded in front of him- pure contempt. Sound. First time I'd heard Perfect Kiss as well. Really good set. They came on really late, missed the train back to Corby and has to kip in a bus shelter in Nottingham. All brilliant fun when you're 16...

Finsbury Park 87 (did they call it Factory in the Park?) was amazing, though I thought the sound system was sheeeite. Happy Mong days very funny. First time I'd seen em. Had no idea what was going on.

Thought Wembley in 87 was pretty soulless myself. Especially as I was sittinig down about 8 miles from the stage.

Thinking back, yes Liverpool last year probably was one of the worst. Right from me getting the crappest "posh" hotel in the world. The only redeeming bits were the pissups in the Hanover and the Slaughterhouse, and the hospitality from PHD. Rest of the day was summed up by the shocking kebab I had in the early hours. Overpriced and not up to standard.

Ans the best one was Paris ,Zenith,May 2002.

Yes it was good, apart from the sound for the first 5 or 6 songs, and the price of the Kronenbourg in the bar across the road!

Best for me was probably my first,Man' Hac' 3/12/85,2 shows in one night,2 different setlists covering the best of LowLife,fookin' brilliant.G-MEX '88 deserves a mention too The worst would be Man' Apollo Oct'01,they were like a cabaret act,the mystique & edge had gone & I just thought I didn't want to see them become a parody.But by the time of the Move Festival the following Year,they were awesome

It was a damn sight better than the night before, but I think everyone was expecting a JD song, and when it didn't materialise there was a bit of disappointment.

Coincidentally I was listening to Milan Rollingstone last night. Brilliant gig. Think the sound man was having fun with his new delay unit.

I know the train only goes to Kettering but I lived in Corby at the time. Had to get a bus from Nottingham about 6AM the next day and had to bunk off school... All well worth it

Best:

RFH 84seated - but wonderful set Leeds Tiffanys 85 - classic bone crushing gig Tower Ballroom 86 followed by Winter Gardens (souncheck and all) the following night

Worst:

Wembley 87 (agree with all the comments) And they were on autopilot for some of the 2001 gigs (or maybe I got bored with the barely changing set list)

this is like comparing apples and oranges giving the different time periods.

This one i think is self explanatory.

Slough 85 and Readings 89 and 98 were excellent for atmosphere and set.

I thought Slough was shit, personally. Boring set. Reading 87 was little better!

I'd say that for anyone on the youthful side of 35 Reading '98 was just blissful, more about the crowd than anything else - the whole place became the all-singing, all-dancing church of New Order for 90 glorious minutes.

Remember listining to Radio 1 a few days later and Garbage's Shirley Manson (big NO fan) was telling Steve Lamacq that after about 20 minutes of listening to the Order's set and the audience reaction they knew they'd been blown offstage.

That poxy DVD really doesn't do the gig justice......

its happening all of the time.

give it a whirl, you may be pleasantly surprised. Decent first three of IALP, EGG and Face Up, some sequencer problems later on, but it wasn't the worst hour they've ever spent on stage. Better than Margate or Heaven on that tour for starters.

i can't say...I haven't drunk any Kro that night. I was right in front of Barney, on the first row, with my wife and a friend of mine ( former and only drummer of my own band!) and we have just drunk mineral water cos "now it's just Perrier water" - as said Barney in Carhaix 2005 - a good gig too , where i enjoyed a lot their EGG > DDD DD CC GGG etc played under a pouring rain at midnight! Great memory.

Yeah, NO were originaly supposed to be headling the Phoenix Festival, but that got pulled and they were shunted to Reading where, contractually, Garbage were already pencilled in as headliners.

But we all know who's show it really was, as Manson laster admitted!

I just really didn't enjoy Finsbury 87, for the very reasons that so many people seem to have enjoyed it. Thought the setlist was a bit stale, and I didn't like the atmosphere. Was nursing a rib injury so couldn't get stuck in down the front.

NEC 89 would have been ok if it had been a smaller venue and I hadn't had the belt on me jeans confiscated - I had to wedge me thumbs into the belt loops to keep me jeans up, and thus had little leverage to stand my ground down the front!

Lonesome Tonight saved that one for me.

Best: Brixton 87 Worst: Prbably agree with Tim on NEC '89. The night before was great but NEC was flat, Mondays were better that night.
