Reason for "split"?

Greetings all,

Sorry to flog a dead horse here, just curious if anyone knows a reason why Hooky and Bernard had a falling out? (If that's what happened, anyway.) Lord knows they can have the right to call it quits whenever they want to- they've certainly earned it- I guess I am just wondering because of Hooky's comments, Tony Wilson's, etc, that refer to the two of them not working together anymore, (not mentioning Steve or Phil.)

I guess it doesn't matter why- I just wish when I saw them (the only time)live when I was 14 (my big bro had to take me along to his dismay), I realized I was in the presence of gods!

I wonder if it has anything with the releasing of The Singles cd. I mean nothing had a complete collection of thier singles. Now that it is out, it kind of states that the band is through. Any other album released after kinda limits thier singles' exposure, and will become a 'bastard' album, as it won't be included in the singles compilation....

That statement the New Order's rep put out after Hooky's myspace posting was odd though -- "New Order is now democratic" or something like that. Hooky did basically say he hated Guilt is a useless emotion but it went on the album anyway - maybe he's feeling like he has to do things he doesn't want to lately? I also read around here somewhere Bernard didn't want to do lyrics for the control music, so maybe it's just general frustration. This is all pure speculation. It's probably about something more mundane, like money. In any case, I'd say take Tony Wilson's advice and don't discuss it publicly. It'll make those interviews akward come the next album otherwise...

The Singles was put out to match the "Item" and "Story" DVD's and to ensure the band had product to fund the late 2005-06 touring : the sales of "Sirens" have apparently been underwhelming.

How come bands like the Fall, who sell fuck all records these days, cant still do big tours of the US and releae albums all of the time...

While New Order...who have a TON of high charting singles, classic albums, albums that sell, and a strong fan base get shit for selling 80,000 copies of thier most recent album? I think thats respectable. WFTSC had 3 top 20 singles, did it not? The album went top 10. It had three Top Fives on the American Dance Singles Charts.

I know that if New Order played a 4-5,000 seat capacity venue here in Columbus Ohio or in Cleveland, they would sell it out easily.

If the Fall and A Certain Ratio can do it, why not New Order?

Despite all the plans that New Order had for the future I think a lot of things started going down hill after the poor sales of Sirens Call. They didn't get much airplay for the album. There were a lot of songs that could have been used in TV and movies. They could have done Saturday Night Live or David Letterman. Shows that are on in every area of the states.

But it isn't all the labels fault. If the band wanted to tour, even if they couldn't fill a huge auditorium, they could have done more festival type shows, or even if they could have gotten an opening spot for a band. Could you imagine what could have been if they would have opened for U2, or Depeche Mode. Not that they have been bumped down to opening band status...

If they would have started a tour during the time that Sirens Call came out, continued through the release of Singles and up through the release of the "follow up" album that was supposed to come out it could have been huge.

But after the slow sales of Sirens, instead of wanting to put out new material, the back cataloge got raided again. I think that Singles was a great idea, however, the casual fan who already ownes one of the several other best ofs that have come out latley really had no incintive to buy it. So the new material isn't catching new fans, and the old material has been "mined to death". So the record label says why do we want another record right away guys?

This has to be straining relations in the band at this point. There was already a lot of apethetic feelings coming out. And then say you have members in the band that wants to get out and tour, and other members who don't for various reasons, like family, or just being fed up with trying to please fans the others in the band and record labels.

I know the band could have done well if they had some support and promotion, both from themselves and the label.Maybe they should have gone back to an indie label. Someone like Sancturary that seemed to at least care about putting music out.

I only hope that sometime in the near future someone can say something that will get them back together again and we have some more great music from them.

100% in agreement... Can't believe anyone would suggest NO opening for U2. Even Bono (conceited pompous wanker that he is) acknowledges that Joy Division had a much more lasting and profound (ie original- unlike those bandwagon jumpers) impact on music...

He didn't like touring when he was 30. I can't imagine that he's warmned to it since then. It's fine if you're a retard or 20 (pretty much the same thing).

No-one really knows what goes on in Bernard's head, we don't know what he does or likes apart from sailing his boat.

He must be reasonably comfortable money wise but if your peers and mates are superstars and fabulously wealthy he might feel poor by comparison.

Can you imagine how horrible/frustrating/annoying it must be to have to deal with music business people all the time.

New Order and the pressure of being New Order must drive you crazy.

I think it stems from an interview they did for some CH4 show back in 89 where Barney called Bono "Bongo".

All of this could be very true.

If New order were signed to Sanctuary..thatd be awesome! Sanctuary did an awesome job getting Morrissey back into the spotlight...they could ahve done the same with NO.

If New Order had done Letterman, Leno, and SNL in the US....and if they had done a 10 date tour of the US right when Sirens came out and a 7 date tour of the UK and a 15 date tour of Europe, all within the first two months of Sirens release...they album would have charted much better.

And in the US..Jetstream should have been the first single. JET was a club hit over here (I know for a fact as I am a club DJ) and I know the song was reasonably popular with high school indie kids in my city.....with the Scissor Sisters connection....its could have charted higher in the US and helped Sirens.

I don't know about that. "Krafty" was a right first single; JET got a lot of shit for being shit, and being first would've raised a lot more eyebrows than it already did. Fact is, New Order's dance stuff on WFTSC sounded corny, and the record company didn't know how to promote their guitar pop.

I liked Jetstream quite a bit! I think its classic New Order pop song.

Krafty is great as well though.
