It's simple economics.
Hooky now has the financial independence to go and earn his corn elsewhere doing DJ sets. He doesn't have to rely on the others anymore for income.
They don't even have to worry about promoting JD/NO anymore in order to shift the back catalogue - 'Control' is gonna do that for them.
That's the Bottom Line, shirley? It's common sense.

New Order can draw huge crowds by itself and will never go back to open for "bigger" artist nor anyone! I can't believe Brian Barker can degrade New Order like that. By the way, I don't think Depeche Mode is bigger than New Order. My opinion only.
For the Stones and Bowie... well... ehem as i said its a figure of speech. Its like saying that New Order is "bigger" than the Stones and Bowie. Why did I pick those two artist instead of other artists? Because they are the two most expensive performers, and I'm willing to spend a fortune to watch New Order live! I haven't watched them perform live in concert except on videos which doesn't count. Again, that is a figure of speech. Compared to Mr. Barker degrading New Order, I am glorifying them. By the way, the concert will be titled MTO!!!...he he he

NO is definately huge...anf if they did a real tour of the US they could make tons of money and play to huge crowds....they still goet played on the radio alot over here, and are pretty popular with high school and college kids who are into indie and alternative music.
But DM sell TONS of records.....and in both 2001 and 2005 they played sold out 70,000 seat stadiums in Germany. They still easily sell out 15-16,000 venues in Europe and the US.
NO could easily be as successful in those terms as DM if only they were marketed correctly. Mute were very smart with how they handled DM. Factory were too with NO....but Warners really dropped the ball with WFTSC.....that record is great and could have been much bigger than it was if it had jsut been marketed better.
I am a longtime NO fan and WFTSC is actually my second favorite NO album, behind Technique. Its blasphemy to say...but I prefer WFTSC over PCL and Brotherhood and GR any day.
Damn, I was just bringing out an instance of what could have been. Had someone other than US, the fans that come to this website cared about what the band was doing. New Order doesn't NEED to open for any band, BUT what if they would have. Get the hell off my back! I wouldn't have thought that Electronic wouldn't have needed to open for Depeche Mode either, but they did.

does it ever dawn on folks that NO aren't ambitious? Maybe they have no interest in being rock stars.
I've always thought that a bands music becomes increasingly more interesting the more they don't care what most people think....
Maybe Barney and Hooky and Steve and (missing) Gilliam are just tired and that is that.
Hooky can dj and inpersonate a Viking.
Barney can sail his boat.
Steve can play with his tanks and drums and Gilliam can reaise the kids.
Sounds like a happy ending. Could have wished just as good an endings for Ian C., Martin H., and Bob Gretton.
...and they all go quietly off into the sunset....maybe with Tony Wilson and a scent of "The Hac" and Factory in its wake.
Been a nice 30 year run.
We could be so lucky.
