New Order release Live DVD

Got mine yesterday. Superb collection on 2nd disc, watching the glasgow gig tonight. Unfortunatley ordered a while ago (pre order) on Amazon so not got the audio CD, still never mind it may turn up on ebay. If you haven;t bought this DVD then do your self a favour and buy it, best NO DVD / Video (legally anyway) you can buy.

I thought the exact same thing since I ripped the DVD audio track to my iPod until I realised that's got to be Barney singing along to the studio version on playback. First time I heard it I thought "That's a really superb vocal on that 1963, easily rivals the studio version" but it ruddy well is the studio version naughty.

Ironically, the sound quality on the Technique songs is a good deal worse than the even earlier mid-80s performances; what's that all about? Minor point though, good to see some footage rather than none at all.

Yers right the vocal on 1963 must indeed be the studio recording.Only watched it once so far but on first play it did seem a bit too professional a live vocal by his usual standards.And yeah agree the sound quality on the earlier live stuff is superior to the later stuff.Can't grumble though.Sooperb DVD.

Got mine three disc version yesterday - liked Turn live, much better than on the album. And of course really funny to watch the old stuff on disc two.

A couple of months ago I ordered the Mysterious Cities Of Gold boxset and they sent me 3 Jethro DVD's

Got my HMV three disc-er in the mail today so there's no excuses for the rest of yers. Went straight for disc two and enjoyed a few of the rough diamonds. What was with those budgie-smuggler shorts in Toronto.

Had the pleasure of going into town and getting the 2 discer but didnae there was a threes up one!

Nuts, the 3 discer is the one with the live CD of Glasgow although missing a few songs from what appear on the DVD

Roy and I stood for quite some time in his lounge yesterday, staring morosely at the miserable packaging.

The three disks are on one spindle for Christ’s sake. This cover art is a crappy monochrome rip-off of the beautiful smeared image for the Peel sessions. The quality of the printing is awful and the paper used is car-bootleg quality. The disks themselves are not fun to hold like every other New Order release and re-release that I've seen. They're printed as poorly as the cover and two of them look different to the third.

There’s no theme running through the object as a whole. The light which reflects off its form mutters an apology as it shuffles into my eyes. It doesn’t even wipe its feet; just swims shame-facedly through my optical fluid and slumps against the dark base of my retina with Winehouse, toilet graffiti and the pages of Hello.

I don’t have the words to fully express my disappointment, yet at the same time I feel happy because now I realise even more how lucky we were to have Peter Saville to package everything we’ve bought until now.

That thought is the only thing stopping me from chucking the box in the bin and storing the disks in an unmarked cover; one that at least holds them apart from one another. The balance of function and form is decimated futher by the fact that the packaging fails to deliver either. The disks will rub together if you leave them in that case. The purpose of the packaging is to prevent this. How can someone have decided that this is a good idea?

Or maybe this is the point: that the Factory story is complete. The early sandpaper cover destroyed everything that touched it, the story ends with piece of packaging that spoils only the media it contains? The idea that anyone involved in this project would even consider that packaging could be significant at all, let alone understand a metaphor like that is laughable.

This is potentially the last significant release by one of the most important bands of the last three decades. I know I’m thinking about it a bit too hard, but you would have expected the record company to give it more thought than they have.

Some good points there, Colin , aye.I was very surprised when i opened it to discover all 3 discs on one spindle.Thought at first they had only included one disc by mistake and then was certain for a moment that they'd sent me the standard 2 disc without the CD until i found it at the bottom of the spindle.Hadn't occurred to me that the discs will rub against each other and get damaged so many thanks for that tip, Col.Think i'll store the CD in a spare plastic CD sleeve which hopefully limit any possibilty of damage to that part of the set.

I don't mind the artwork but as you say it is a bit of a rehash of other releases.

And i've never been happy at all with the font they used on the WFTSC album and singles etc. And they've used it again on this.The font for the 3 16 and Finsbury DVDs is by far lovelier.

Watching the Glasgow disc brought mixed feelings.It raised the spirits to have a new release of some sort and great to watch but whereas watching a new New Order concert DVD before got me hungry about the next gig and when where it would be this one leaves a bad feeling in the stomach that there's never going to be a next gig anymore.The interview snippets makes you feel they are still together and going strong.But they're not.

Agree with Colin - the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. No wonder no one is credited with creating it.

Good to see the Glasgow show though (couldn't make it in person - went for Wolves instead) and the extra disc has some great moments on it. Not played the CD yet though.

All in all, a good DVD and way better than the 2 stars the fuckwits at Q magazine have given it.

Haven't watched the DVD yet, as I'm in Telford minus a DVD player, but did buy it at the local HMV store - 20 quid (at least it's the 2xDVD plus 1xCD version)... Hmmm, maybe I should have ordered it via HMV.co.uk (bastards!) instead... :p

Agree with colin on the packaging - it's shite... No credits, even...

And as for the way that the discs are bundled onto one spindle, that's just shoddy...

But why should the record label give any thought into it if the band gave little effort to it? theyre probably just fufiling contractual obligations, no one is bothering to promote it, its obvious who is going to buy it (Not me!). Sure, the second disc is nice enough, but really, there is a multitude of old stuff available, and they had to stick it in their so some of the fans would buy it, instead of a live dvd which, track wise, is far too similar to 5 11.

The band were involved in the remastering though. They have put some work into the product, rather than just turning up for the gig then roaring off into the night.

HMV took my money 72 hours ago and have not even posted it yet,

The orange sleeve with the Venus de Milo one? And the concert itself was gash - interviews during songs, weird framing things going on, no TBTHG!

Watched the rest of disc 2 last night personal highlight must the rotterdam gig, the 4 trax are immense. If they by some remarkable chance reform again they shoudl play sunrise again.

Also watched the other disc glasgow, great gig, the songs sound brilliant, makes you upset watching it again knowing thats it. WFTSC call trax sound really good, particulary Turn. Went to the blackpool gig of this tour, so glad I did now in hindsight. The sound quality is excellent at the glasgow gig. Never heard the blackpool gig recorded but apprantly its at the end of the joy division doc, so looking forward to that.

Watched the 2 DVDs last night. For those of you worried about the interview interspersed between songs, calm yourselves, there's an option on the Track-by-track menu option to "Play all without interview".

The second DVD is essential. Not for the quality, just the step back in time. The Glastonbury footage is other-worldy. Bernard on the floor is just a hilarious watch thru the fingers moment.

But my main concern is where were Bernard's missing trousers at the Toronto 85 gig ? You could clearly see Gillian turning away from him every time there was a glimpse of hairy plum.
