NO live at Hurrah

Ah, my bad... I thought he was talking about the bass in the photo... Out equiptmented again by the true gear heads!!!!

It's an easy enough mistake to make when you're looking at 30-year old dark photos and videos!

They have the BB1200 as well but not the BB1200S, for some reason.

Eric: I had the same thought about the 335-TD, but they're stuff was stolen right after their first US gig at Maxwell's (in Hoboken) and the Hurrah's show was right after that, so this must have been borrowed gear. They only played Hurrah's the one time. Maybe Barney's guitar wasn't stolen for some reason, or they did find another one... (I'd be surprised if he'd bothered to change the pickup rings, since they didn't seem very interested in the cosmetics of their instruments). Any pictures of him with the 335 before the theft?

Here's a cool photo by Eugene Merinov of the Ukranian National Home performance... band is probably playing Ceremony. Check out the 335 Gillian is playing with the white/cream pickup rings.

Cool pic - definitely looks like the same guitar. Gillian's gear is regularly overlooked - some of it may have been handed off from Barney, but I know for example that she had a Shergold Masquerader in the early years (stock, so apparently not the one Barney had in JD), and a Yamaha SG (sort of a cross between a Gibson LP and SG) in the mid-80's; those were really well-made guitars that are fetching good prices these days.

Does anyone know if anything is happening with this footage ? ie , are they any plans to relaease the gig, or is it out there somewhere already ??

Nah, some behind the scenes collectors have been trying to get it from her for years. She's holding out for too much money, but we're to the point where it's not cost effective. If it was put on CD/DVD it wouldn't make enough money to cover the cost of purchasing it - no one but serious collectors are interested anymore.

I may have dreamt it, but wasn't her condition for its release for it to be a 'then and now' film - ie get the band back together to perform the same setlist and include that as well so we could all compare and contrast.

No surprise that idea never had legs...

It was no dream, your right on the money from what I was told. Besides the fortune it would take to buy it, she also wants the band to get back togeather and play the set again........lol

I specifically asked Hooky about this when I met him backstage recently (03/10/10) at the Powerstation. He said the issue with this one was over the fact that whilst she was a VJ at the club, it didn't actually belong to her. It was the property of the club. Don't know what the outcome is likely to be, but it is a question of ownership.

She was talking about this in 2007 (08?) and had the brilliant idea - despite the band having, you know, broken up and all - of only releasing the original footage as part of a modern reinterpretation of the original footage, an artsy film made of the modern NO performing all of the tracks from Hurrah's live interspersed with the 1980 footage. Basically she wanted to film 2008 New Order, in a room, playing 1980 New Order tracks as featured at the Hurrah's gig. An ... interesting concept, to say the least.

That idea went about as far as Hooky's eternal, undying love for all things Bernard.

Attempts were made, both officially and via end-run, to obtain this footage for archival/other use (including an option for the audio only, as it is stereo soundboard) and were all rebuffed. Supposedly the band has a U-Matic video copy (from 1980) of the original footage (Merrill claims to still have the signed receipt from a day after the gig, signed by Hooky at least), but I'd hazard to say if that were indeed the case these days - I'd bet they did have it at one point, at least within management's control and not buried below the Revenge rehearsal videos in Hooky's basement - footage would have been on the Glasgow bonus DVD unless Merrill forbade all commercial use as part of the sale - SALE! - to the band in September 1980 of the U-Matic dub.

I bet she has the only legit copy (barring any she gave to friends, and I doubt even Shamberg has a copy) functionally available these days. If the band has one, it's buried, and probably wrapped in contractual bullshit.

Someone needs to explain the reality of the modern New Order situation to her. And then we wait for the time to come when another critical part of this band's history is lost forever a la Bury, 1980.

Her site is pretty hard to navigate and commits many web design mortal sins (sideways scrolling etc). I get the impression this is all self promotion rather than any interest in the music. She'll hold onto the New Order footage for dear life I reckon, unable to release it (since they're on a major label), and also unable to get them to license it for the required fee (which will be too much given the fairly limited ability to recoup).

Of course the value of this is diminishing as each year passes, as the band are still split up and unable to function even enough to put out archive releases themselves, leading to interest in them fading away.

New member here, hate to bump an old topic with my first post, but I commented on the Hurrah video last week, asking how progress was going on it - and her reply was:

"I've had a few other films keeping me busy and the ideas how to distribute have not gelled either. I would love to do a screening party of the raw footage, if anybody wants to organise that, maybe that would be easier to do in the short term. Also am happy to screen it in my studio if anybody wants to visit Paris."

Which seems quite promising to me - or am I not being cynical enough!
