One disappointment so far for me is on the bonus disc with Brotherhood. the version of 'True Dub' I was expecting the flipside of the Shep Pettibone remix
Instead we get a nondescript dance mix which bares no relation to 'True Faith' except for a sampled line "I feel so extraordinary" repeated over and over.
I also have Brotherhood, and this track made me want to punt it across the room. Whatever half arsed assembly of these bonus tracks occured, it's obvious they didnt care for much of the fans interest, or common sense.

I beg your pardon? Substance was a mess was it? No one gave a fuck back then. I don't remember too many complaints in NME letters pages moaning about edits to this and that and C & W being called Mesh. Not one of my mates Substance was and still is a fucking great product, and so were all of their Factory output. FWIW, I don't like the reissues and I will not buy them - What's the point moaning about them. You have all the tracks so who gives a shit that they don't appear on the reissues?

substance was a terrible compilation, that could have been fixed easily, but they didn't take the time to do it right on cd..
the cassette versions were excellent though.. (especially the limited edition ones from factory)..

I'll tell you why it is important to 'moan' about them: If no one complains about the lack of quality that occurred than the record companies can do anything they want in these cases, they can get away with Murder (which they DID actually on the bonus disc of P,C&L:D). This is the case by any CD that's released by any record company: double check it first before you throw it into the market!
Does anybody know anything about the Substance Collectors Edition which is on play.com and says it's coming soon. I ask because one of my substance discs is fecked and i was thinking of buying it new again and avoiding these remasters.

Substance was a fine product. They made the decision at the time to redo Confusion and Temptation so they could add something new and they were not satisfied with the originals. They shortened Perfect Kiss to make room on the CD I guess, poor decision. Sure, I would have made a few different decisions like have both C&W and Mesh, a different version of Confusion on disc 2, and why the hell would you need Shame of the Nation. They were limited by the space on the 2 discs. This was at the cusp of the CD era, the vinyl releases were not that rare, vinyl was not "obsolete" yet. It was about the "art" of the Factory product, not a complete collection.

If nothing else, the remasters HAVE gotten me back into NO in a big way... to the point that I spent (way too much) time compiling the 20 essential singles, in their various compilation forms and edits, on my blog:

Hopefully it's a decent overview. It was definitely a daunting task with all the discrepancies from comp to comp... and I only wish the reissues sounded better, as it would've been handy to have (nearly) all the complete 12" versions available in one spot. My next step will be to rate (slam?) the various compilations... followed by an overview of all the Factory releases, highlighting the essential album (non-single) tracks. As I say in the blog, a quality NO retrospective CAN be compiled... just not by Warner Bros! Any comments/criticisms, please post 'em here or on the blog. Thanks!

i'm not really sure by what you mean, it was about being an 'art' product...
it's about the music, period.... who cares about the art? this is a band we're talking about, not some painter, or sculptor..
like i said, the cassette release was excellent..
it's easy to retroactively look back, and forgive all the mistakes on the factory releases, because they came in a 'pretty' package..
but that doesn't excuse them for messing up the track names, editting tracks (unheard of at that time), and sneakily slipping in new versions to disappoint the public...

My favorite version of Bizarre Love Triangle is what I believe to be the original 7" version, only available on CD to my knowledge on the Bizarre Love Triangle CD single which also included several other versions of the song along with State of the Nation. Below is full information about the CD:

Sounds exactly the same as the '94 version on 'best of' to me, but then the more mixes one hears the more they all become indistinguishable. They also both sound identical to the version on '20 years of' even though that one is mysteriously 7 seconds shorter (and is listed as the Brotherhood album version, which it clearly isn't)

Musically the '94 version is near identical, but the vocals were re-recorded. Again, Married to the Mob still sounds like a better mix since it adds an extra vocal line of Barney singing "doo doo doo.."

some tracks on the promo discs are ok, when they aren't on the released versions..
and vice versa.... such as 'blue monday' missing beats on the promo, but its ok on the release..
and others have different tracks... like both versions of temptation on the bonus disc for movement.

surely you're all mad - buy the originals for next to nothing on amazon or just 'substance' which has most of these supposedly rare 'b' sides. I don't begrudge the lads a penny, but its a bit like 'the best of new order' - they are not doing anything new so the record co. pumps out a 'new' collection that aint new or good value.
