So none of the sound is compressed,otherwise they probably won't sound much better then the originals. I agree with the Flac notion, also due to lossless taking up less disc space.

because 320 kbps mp3 makes no sense whatsoever from a quality/size point of view. also with FLAC, you are as close as possible to the original and everyone can make his own mp3 version in a bitrate that suits him.

Or you could convert it to a lossless file that your player can use. For example I use Windows Media Losless to archive all my NO stuff, so it's not like I lose quality.

They probably wont, but material like this is constantly on the net. I've seen it done before with Depeche Mode's world violation tour soundboard, the fans were willing to pay warner for it, but they found a bootleg and warner could've made a killing. Besides, New Order at this point is just Hooky, who seems to be the only one in the know, or caring about NO stuff.

I was severely disappointed when Get Ready was released. A friend who works for Billboard Magazine had mailed me his official pre-release copy from Warner Brothers, and a couple of the tracks on that had now been relegated to B-sides while crap like Rock The Shack was now included (you'll notice it's not anywhere in this set). Since the album was only released 7 years ago and doesn't need remastering, this is my opportunity to reimagine that album the way I wanted to hear it. Turn My Way and Slow Jam are present, but only on disc two and only in their pre-release incarnation. F*ck Billy Corgan.

Oh, and, instead of complaining about me altering the album, let me suggest you make your own version instead.

What a great (new) tracklisting!

I especially like this comment on Get Ready:

"I was severely disappointed when Get Ready was released. A friend who works for Billboard Magazine had mailed me his official pre-release copy from Warner Brothers, and a couple of the tracks on that had now been relegated to B-sides while crap like Rock The Shack was now included (you'll notice it's not anywhere in this set). Since the album was only released 7 years ago and doesn't need remastering, this is my opportunity to reimagine that album the way I wanted to hear it. I thought that Rock The Shack was sounding like another band! It is completely out of place and maybe even Run Wild is.

Also, I always thought that Player In The League deserved to be an album track (instead of a b-side and letting Rock The Shit have all the fun on the album ) because it's classic New Order with some neat bass later on in the song.

Besides the new tracklisting (which is maybe not the final one) I think the 'upgraded' Get Ready is very cool now.

For those torrent(ly) challenged, these would fit onto three DVDRs or maybe only two in FLAC format. You could do a vine or weed and perhaps put this in the 'TLU' forum. At first, I was dead against this going in TLU but whatever is easier.

DJ D is quite correct, no Behind Closed Doors on Get ready?, is that an oversight?

Is the "10 seconds of silence" a good idea? I'm not sure...no official "original cd plus bonus tracks" release does this and it seems to be just a pointless gimmick to me...furthermore, if those 10 seconds will be a part of the previous or next track, they are going to mess up the listening experience when listening in shuffle/random mode. You should consider dropping it, imho.

EDIT: oh, I see you adressed this in your post, I didn't notice it at first...Anyway, I'd suggest dropping the idea altogether.

I left Behind Closed Doors off for two reasons - one, I don't like it, and two, it's easily located on CD while many of the other things I'm including on disc two of Get Ready are not. That one is more of a re-imagine project than a remaster project.

I'm going to answer your first question more in-depth further down the thread, but we've very carefully collected the highest-bitrate versions of the rare and remixed material. In some cases we have to use a needle-drop, but about 85% of the source material is digital. "Remaster" in this instance means re-EQing and adjusting volume levels to create a consistent listening experience without squeezing out all the dynamics. It probably is better to call this a "reissue" project, but my partner is an expert in audio restoration, and his needle-drops sound like CD quality once he's finished with them. Let me assure you Bruce is using high-end audiophile equipment. Scroll down for examples.

Since people have asked, I wanted to address the whole "remaster" thing. My friend Bruce, who is helping with the project, posted this in his audio restoration blog:

I've started work on "Shellshock" because I have all the official releases of this song in my possession. It pre-dated the popularity of CD single, so it was originally only put out as a 12" single, with a much shorter version released as a 7". The song was included on the Substance compilation, but approximately 3 minutes of the original 12" mix were edited out.

I've cleaned up the 12", and by comparing to the CD with some frequency analysis, I can get a near-exact sonic match by dropping 3dB off the treble starting at around 6KHz. It's often not possible to get so close between vinyl and CD, because often there is different dynamic compression applied at the mastering stage, or vertical limiting done on the vinyl that alters the stereo image. But this time I was lucky, because I wanted to see if I could get away with splicing in the parts on the 12" that got edited out. See, the 12" has some groove echo at the beginning, where during the sparse passages, you can faintly hear what is going to come around on the next revolution, plus the residual surface noise from vinyl. Obviously, the CD doesn't have this. So I got the vinyl to sound as close to the CD as I could and edited away. I think I was able to pull this off, which is quite rare, so before I finish the other songs from this single, I'm asking for the opinions of your unbiased ears. Here's the track by itself: do you hear any change in tonality for the portions that are sourced from vinyl?

The first edit is at the 4:34 mark, right at "After all the years..." and goes until 6:57, ending right before "I've been good and I've been bad...". The second is at 7:28, between the "Hold-" and "-on" (it sounds a bit awkward, but it does on the 12" too) and goes until the "-on" at 8:20.

In the process of doing this, I discovered that the phase is inverted on the CD compared to the 12". No biggie. But I also found that the CD has a creeping delay on the high frequencies...

Below are a couple of screenshots from Adobe Audition displaying about half a second of the song in spectral view. What spectral view does is instead of showing a waveform, it displays the sound content by frequency. This is what I stare at for hours while I'm cleaning up a recording, manually highlighting clicks and removing them, and advancing the screen about half a second at a time. There are two displays; the top is the left channel and the bottom is the right. The higher the frequency, the higher it appears in the spectral view, although this is linear, so the midrange and bass are actually all in the lower quarter of the display. Louder frequencies are in yellow, medium in red, light in purple, and silence is black. Viewing the file this way makes removing pops and clicks much easier, because they appear as bright vertical lines. Anyway...

This shows about half a second of the song, as taken from the 12". See how the pulse-waves in the right channel are perfectly vertical.

Here's the same segment from the CD. Note that the lines lean up to the right, indicating that the highs are slightly delayed (BTW, the abrupt roll-off above 20KHz is normal for CDs from this era). I think this might go some ways as to explaining why some audiophile purists believe that the 12" has better sound than the CD. I confess that I can't hear the difference, but then again, my hearing cuts off at about 16KHz. ___________________________________________________________________________

I think this sounds remarkable. It still needs some subtle EQing that will take place in the final stages, but that's a minor detail.

I just downloaded the sample of Shellshock and it sounds perfect. Getting a New Order singles box set with rips this high quality sounding will be awesome.

We can take this even further by restoring the artwork to be printed as CD sleeves. I'm fairly good with photo restoration, but just have the CD releases. If someone can scan in the vinyl artwork at 600DPI and emailed me JPEG files, I can work on some of those in my spare time.

The Shellshock edits are clean, but I'm picking up on the difference in sound. It won't be obvious to everybody and I'm not even sure it's as obvious as I think due to my familiarity with CD version of the song. There's a slight change in tone and depth and I want to say the vocal gets slightly louder... very slightly, but it was enough to abruptly catch my attention. It's late so I'm listening through my phones and can't turn up the monitors for a better reference. You might try a convolution EQ to better match the two sources. There's also quite a few odd comps throughout the entire song I'd never picked up on before. The high frequency stuff puzzles me but it could be a byproduct of how the original master was put to disk. The Anyway, not trying to be an ass but thought I'd mention it so take it all with a grain of salt. Best of luck on this project!
