Remasters redux

I've never felt so enthusiastic about a New Order release before! You're really making an incredible work. Thank you for sharing this with us!

I know it's all a matter of personal taste and you are going to the effort so do it as you please. But Behind Closed Doors is one of my favourite latter period tracks - and surely wipes its botty on the likes of 'Such a Good Thing'

I completely agree. If anyone has heard the 50 pound mixes, they are excellent. This project is in the BEST of hands...

It is the same (16bit 44.1k), no downsampling necessary or desired.

Excellent. This is the first time I've heard the full version of Shellshock in 20 years - thanks for posting those. I'd forgotten about all those extra bits.

I've avoided the 7" edits since they can mostly be found on the Singles compilation. I've also skipped many redundant remixes that don't really add anything new.

My versions will not be compressed to hell, sacrificing dynamics for loudness.

I'll also be tackling Republic and Get Ready, the latter of which I'm going to completely overhaul, resequencing the album and bringing it closer to the advance promos the record label sent out.

Again; Warners should have you on the payroll!!!

I have been away from these boards for a while and come back to find this wonderful project in the works.

I am very excited by this and yes, it's a pity that a fan has had to commit to providing these 'definitive' versions.

This should re-fill the gaps in my previously extensive NO collection caused by the divorce a while back. :)

(Though I'll still be buying the official releases to assuage any (c) guilt.)

There are two problems with this approach:

1 - Declicking the way I do it is really, REALLY time-consuming. I do it all manually, for no automatic declicking algorithm that I've heard yet can consistently remove all the clicks without damaging attack transients, pulse waves, etc. The only way to get the kind of results that I do is to zoom in to about half a second of audio, manually highlight and remove the clicks, hit a key to scroll ahead to the next half-second of audio, highlight the clicks... repeat several hundred times, using different processes for loud pops and light crackle.

So, for a record in good condition, that isn't full of pulse waves, it takes me about an hour to clean up 5 minutes of music. Of course, if the record is in poor condition and/or is full of buzzy bright tones that require me to zoom down to the sample to clean without damage, it takes much longer. It requires me to have a certain amount of OCD insanity to do this at all. To spend that amount of time to clean up material that is widely available on CD (and prior to the new remasters, not dynamically crushed and mastered with reasonable competence) requires even more insanity -- not to mention free time -- than I have.

2 - If I were to go that route, I'd want to use the original Factory UK LPs... none of which I have right now. You wouldn't want me to use the crappy PolyGram Canada pressings I have access to, believe me.

Nothing got cut off below 150 (aside from 20Hz brickwall rumble filter, but there's nothing down there on these records but surface noise). Confusion has no EQ applied to it at all. Now, there's a slight boost around 14KHz due to the design of the Audio-Technica AT150MLX I'm using, but that will be smoothed over later. As for the lack of bass, the record really sounds that way. I sourced this from a Dutch pressing, and perhaps it was mastered brighter than the original UK one. Alternately, the lack of bass is probably due to the length of the record itself: at 15 minutes per side at 45RPM, the groove pitch would need to be about the same as a regular LP (20 minutes per side), which eliminates the possibility of booming bass unless you cut the signal at very low levels.

Shellshock was EQ'd to match the edit on Substance so that I could cheat and get the full-length version while still getting the pristine intro from the CD.
