Ok, I missed the point with my trivia post, so let's get to it.

We want to build our FAQ, so the best way we figured is to start a topic with questions to answer, so basically we will refer people to the FAQ when they ask the same questions all the time.

And PLEASE, this time be serious, all non-sense post will be deleted, post only if you KNOW the answer. And even better, you can answer it if you think this will be a valuable thing for the FAQ.

I'll start by an example:

Q. Why is the first New Order album titled "Movement"?

A. It's the contrary of the last Joy Division album "Still".

(I'm not saying this is the real answer, you can comment it!)

Of course, we will add your name next to the answer unless you don't want to, we will select the good questions.

So let's say, you can always try to answer this one:

Q. Why is Bernard Sumner's nickname Barney?

That's because when he was a kid everyone saw him as a Barney from the Flinstones lookalike (it's true!). My question: What do the numbers and letters on the cover of "Brotherhood" mean (I know the answer, this one is just to make you think!)?

Isn't Barney just called Barney because it's a shortened/informal version of Bernard? Or am I missing something somewhere? :scratch:

Certainly, a good question to answer re: Barney's name(s) might be why he keeps changing his surname, and why he chooses the alternatives he does...

actually, i always thought that bernie would be short for bernard, it would make more sense. but i guess barney just stuck.

No, really. Bernard was called Barney because he looked like Barney Rubble! I read this several times in the past! Long timers will be able to confirm this (where is Al Jarvis when you need him? :laugh: ).

actually, i have a funny key chain with a picture of barney the dinosaur strapped with dynamite, and at the bottom you see barney is in pieces with the words barney rubble at the bottom.

at least bernard doesn't look like the purple dinosaur.

I'm not sure if someone in the band ever called him Barney Rubble, I think he was (and still is) only Barney. The nickname Barney Rubble was first mentioned in a 1977 Warsaw gig review made by Tony Moon for Sounds magazine: "Tony Tabac is on drums...he only joined a few weeks ago, Peter Hook is on bass/plastic cap, Barney Rubble is on guitar and Ian Curtis is the voice. Lotsa Action and jumping in the air...to...'Tension', 'The Kill'..."

Plastic cap? :lol: Maybe fashion mistakes like plastic caps and mustaches could be a subject for the FAQ page.

I remember reading somewhere that Bernard kept changing his surname because of his mom's marital status or something similar. Like Dicken was his dad's last name but he wasn't around so he changed it to Albrecht because his mom got remarried and changed it to Sumner because this was his mom's maiden name and he didn't like his stepfather. this is all fuzzy memory so the details probably aren't right (and I don't remember where i saw this to check or even have my NO books on hand) but the basic gist is what I remember reading. Quite sad actually, changing your name because you don't feel comfortable with what it represents. I can identify.

I'm sure somebody can confirm or deny this. There are tons of people here who know so much more than me.

"What album/s did 'Don't Do it' come out on?"

If anybody knows, please let me know. I've been looking for a CD with this song for years.

"Don't do it" was not on any album, it was the b-side to "Fine Time", the first single from 'Technique'. Hopefully it will turn up on the upcoming "Recycle" compilation if they do a b-sides disc. Damn fine tune, that one! CTB :cool:

Yes you are! Just for a laugh, I'll tell you this: on my younger years I spent AGES trying to find out the profound, metaphysical meaning of those fucking numbers... until I read in a magazine (who quoted Saville, so it was "canon") that it was just a piece of metal he found in a scrapyard! God, how I felt cheated! As for the "barney" thing, it was indeed a childhood nickname. Another FAQ then: was "Here to stay" designed by Saville? Absurd question? Well, there's no "art direction by Peter Saville, designed by Howard Wakefield" line in it...

I'd always assumed Barney was just short for Bernard. Although I do have a friend called Stuart who's also nicknamed Barney so, er, go figure?!

Now, what I've always wondered is ... why is Peter Hook nicknamed 'Hooky'? :scratch:

It's to do with the structure of Ecstacy (the song, not the drug).....five bars followed by eight bars followed by six bars.

i don't think we will ever know for sure why barney changed his last name...every time someone asked him he said it was private and he would not say. though the above explanation makes the most sense, knowing what he has revealed about his childhood. i don't think we should answer the question until we hear it straight from the horse's mouth. we don't wanna start rumours ya know. ;)

peter saville did design here to stay note the little red bar. also, here's a question for you: What record was Ian Curtis listening to when he hanged himself? What film was he watching before he hanged himself? And the BIG question:

On the cd Movement, you will notice that they keep mentioning "The Him". Who is "The Him"?

If you know, post the answer and I will confirm.

Also, Tony Wilson used to run this record company called Factory Records out of Manchester England.He did not think much about the future,even though one of the factory bands wrote a song about it~~!

Werner Herzog's Stroszek, Iggy Pop's The Idiot . .. but f'knows who 'The Him' is? Never actually knew it was genuinely s'posed to be anyone?

Think About The Future? You're not referring to the Mondays here are you, cos I thought it was just Oakenfold who added the line himself cos he thought it fitted in with the close of the track?
