Were Joy Division Nazis?

Could never really believe how people from a hot sunny country could be into Joy Division.They were/ are partly about being from cold, desolate, dark Britain.Not some sunny Florida state.Or Virgin Islands.Having said that my first experience of Unknown Pleasures was listening to it on those hot balmy nights of summer 1984.So maybe there is an argument for genuinely associating with Curtis while lying on a Thailand beach.

Some say...that Macclesfield Con. Club is modelled on the castle in Escape From Colditz. The real Nazis were obviously Spandau Ballet ,I mean for heavens sake, naming yourself after a prison for that lovely man Rudolf Hess. To quote Lemmy (who collects war memorabilia) " I'm not a Nazi, it's just they had the better uniforms", and his alternative pension is nice and safe unlike mine.

Joy Division were certainly not Nazis or even Neo-Nazis. That's utter crap.

But let's bring it home, guys.

Let's think, how many of us are not infatuated with swastikas, Hitler's speech, NSDAP emblematics and uniforms? We are fascinated by that spark of militarist design creativity and, being so far removed from the atrocities of the war, we feel quite comfortable. Many of us may not share fascist ideology, don't accept it all, yet the genius of aesthetics of death and stern beauty will attract generations to come.

Joy Division didn't use all these references just for provocation's sake, they were indeed attracted by the Nazi paraphernalia to a great extent, albeit on, I assume, a pure aesthetic level.

Dude, theres been like 3 films about Joy Division.... There was talk of a musical in another thread, but apparently Paul Young won't give permission to let them use 'Love will tear us apart' as it's the centerpiece for 'Come back & Stay- The Paul Young Story', currently being directed by the Coen Brothers. :p

According to Brain Edges's Pleasures and Wayward Distractions Private Eye magazine had a piece in 1980 about 'the rise of fascism in the rock scene' singling out NO which was, in their words, 'the unpleasent name of an even more unpleasent band called Joy Division.' New Order was though to have fascist connatations as well.But let's face it, the bad guys have the best shit. What's more impressive: the Nuremberg rallies or the changing of the guards?
