Coldplay.

coldplay is the only thing that's bareable on the radio right now! i swear, i'm happy whenever i hear a coldplay song on the radio! i've got their last record, parachutes. absolutely a great record. full of emotion and pretty melodies and lots of melancholy. not very original music, but they do it well.

don't know if i wanna get their new record since my coldplay phase has pasted, but the new song sounds really good.

I think Coldplay are an excellent band.....trouble is that they always tend to get mentioned in the same breath as Toploader and Travis, both of whom are utter shite.

I actually like their music, havent got their first album and have no great plans to get their new one, but really like the music and think his lyrics can be really moving, a bit over depressing sometimes tho ;)

That's interesting, because I've never actually listened to Coldplay, ever, at all, largely because they are always put in the same catagory as those two you mention, which I loathe.

But I like too much stuff already anyway. One has to have some irrational hates to put give form to ones taste. I can't go on just relying on hating Genesis or obscure non entities like Gene or Dodgy forever, I have to resist something the NME tell me to like.

Gene used to be quite good, Olimpyan is an excellent album with some of the best Smiths songs ever written.

Ahhh Budvar......Gene are really rather good if you give 'em a chance. The Smiths comparisons are completely fair, but their second and subsequent albums moved away from that label. I'm almost prepared to forgive Martin Rossiter for being a Cardiff City fan.

Going back to The Smiths, it's probably not escaped your notice that the b-side of This Charming Man was called "Jeanne"!!

i nevered bothered with coldplay....... but that new single is growing on me at a fair rate of knots , if you know what i mean.........

I dunno - I find a lot of these bands quite bland and pedestrian. Travis, Starsailor, Elbow, The Stereofookingphonics.... There's no excitement or passion in their music, but I have to grudgingly admit to liking a couple of songs by these guys (no, not "Yellow" or that other nagging single "Trouble") so out of the whole lot of them, I'd consider Coldplay are the least offensive. As it is, their latest one is so nagging I canna get it out of my head either....it's all right I suppose.... jeez, I may one day get to actually really like them! Shite name though.....less charitable souls may call them something more akin to a type of salad dressing ;)

COLDPLAY are pretty good at times but in small doses.

...which is my problem with them really. They are dead wimpy, and usually I DESPISE whingy, whiny music but there's just something about Coldplay I can't resist. Maybe it's because there's still something quite uplifting in amongst all the introspection. Liking them is still a bit of a guilty secret for me though....

Stereophonics! Now there's a band I really can't stand. Pedestrian is right. Stereophonics, Travis and Starsailor, plod-rock, the lot of them.

Yea, bands like Travis and Stereophonics bring to mind the cliche 'like punk never happened', except that seems to imply the return of over-blown pomp rock, concept albums, and spaced out Californian superstars, which would be postively exciting compared to these plod-rockers. Its more like the final running out of steam and inspiration 25 years on. Their attitude seems to be everything interesting's been done already so lets just stick to 'good musicianship' and dull songwriting.

Surely the most relevant issue here is the fact Chris from Coldpie is dating Natalie Infusion Bubble.

This companionship catapults the bands status beyond the known universe?

Actually Blue, I do quite like Gene. I was (quite poorly as it seems) trying to defend them from the sneak attact from Pete Poorten. Comparing Gene whose music is full of vim and vigour to the fatuous docudramas of Fat Peter Gabriel and Friends was IMAO a bit unfair.

Have you seen them life? They drop from Reading 98 at the last minute (literally!) but I saw them at Leeds 99. Only correct. Nothing to write home about.

Apparently the song 'Shiver' from the first album was written about when Chris Martin was lowly civilian and saw Miss Imbroolywoogly at a party and thought she was the loveliest thing he ever did see, but didn't think he'd ever stand a chance.

To be fair I'm not an avid reader of 'Meat' or any of the flippant periodicals that surface to tell us all about the comings of goings of Darius and his colour blind mice.

I do read the back of the Special 'K' box though, at the moment they've got an offer on about berries.

Ooops, sorry for any misunderstanding.

I saw them at Reading (99 I think) but they were on early in the afternoon. I seemed to be the only person awake / enjoying them at the time. In fact I think they were added to the bill late because they had to miss 98.

Also saw them do a proper gig at The Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea after Revelations was released, which was a much more satisfying experience.
