I have ordered and paid the Deluxe-Set for 87 GPB, including P&P. Now I have got the Standard-Set (640/5000) from Warner and without the CD, but with the bill of the Deluxe-Set. Very annoying!

Statement of Warner (added 8.12.2010):

Dear Customer

We are the distribution company responsible for fulfilling orders from the Rhino Records UK webstore, www.rhino.co.uk.

Warner Music Group / Rhino Records UK send stock/products to our factory and we process these orders on their behalf when something is purchased from the store.

This week we have experienced a processing error which has resulted in us accidently sending a number of STANDARD box sets to people who have ordered the DELUXE. This was a human error at our end and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

We are currently in the process of rectifying this situation.

If you ordered a DELUXE box-set but received a STANDARD edition, you will soon receive the elements required to "deluxe" your box.

We can confirm that your deluxe version was not sent out to anyone else

  • your originally allocated box set is here in our warehouse. We are subsequently going to send you...

1 x Peter Saville art piece 2 x Promo CDS 1 x Replacement cardboard insert numbered 1-500.

Other than the aforementioned elements, the box sets are exactly the same, thus your standard box will now be deluxe.

Thank you for purchasing the Joy Division box set "+-" and once again please accept our sincere apologies for this error.

Same for Matthias.

Same thing happened to me as well: I ordered my copy on Nov. 2nd, got billed 86,19 GBP in all for delivery, only to find the standard set with 10 7" only on my doorstep tonight.

NOT amused.

If it makes ye's feel any better, I ordered mine around the same time, live in the UK and I didnae receive anything at all.

I am hoping I receive the deluxe version as an apology for it arriving late :smoking:

I have complained. Warner said to me, I should be a little bit more happy, some people wouldn't get what they have ordered, but some people don't get anything.

I have also complained to rhino.d2c@warnermusic.com, stating that for the handsome money I've paid them, I expect nothing but the "item" I ordered.

I haven't received anything either...

Having said that, by the time it arrives, it'll probably also be the Standard Edition!

But your chances are 1:9 or 1:10 to get the right one. It doesn't matter what you have paid. Good luck, Nick!

Me, too. I think, finally it will be an expensive fun for Warner and they won't earn any money with it.

From what I've seen there may be a pattern emerging

Non-UK orders of the deluxe edition seem to have got the standard box - UK orders of the deluxe edition don't seem to have received anything yet (myself included)

Has anyone actually received a deluxe edition yet - or is Peter Saville's punctuality let him down

or.....as someone might have sang.....

"Saville's late with the art.....again....."

I'll get my coat - standard edition with just the two sleeves.....

Not got mine either... Will be fuming if they send the standard version...

The packages have been sent from a company in Germany called arvato digital services, who makes the merchandising for Warner in Western Europe including England on Friday.

Fook. The Germans are usually very efficient! I blame Saville an all

There is one guy in the german new order forum, who has ordered the Standard Box-Set and has got Luxus-Edition. Obvious a very stupid distribution.

Well, if I get sent the Standard Edition, then it's going straight back for a refund...

Looks like a right royal clusterfsck, should we have expected anything else?

Can somebody post the weights of Standard vs. Deluxe edition, since this sounds like the only way to tell the difference between the two? Heard that they won't take these back if they've been opened, which is a huge problem if there's no way to tell the difference without doing so.

Edit: if the catalogue number (and EAN's) are printed on the outside and correspond to the contents on the inside:

Standard: 5186595937 Deluxe 5249837837

And here are the first results of the german order. :D

  1. De Luxe ordered, got Standard
  2. De Luxe ordered, got Standard
  3. Standard ordered, got De luxe
  4. De Luxe ordered, still waiting
  5. De Luxe ordered, still waiting
  6. De Luxe ordered, still waiting

If we have more results, we can approximately calculate, how many standard versions have been sold.

On another tack

Can the person who got the Deluxe edition verify the track listing on the two Cd's - are they the same as the promos that were withdrawn from ebay?

If they've done this on a large scale then it's a massive fail for Warners. They'll have pissed away the deluxe edition by sending them to the people who paid £50 and they'll have to refund, either partially or entirely, all those who paid £70.

Unless they repress the 500 then those who bought it won't ever get one.

I got mine this lunchtime in the UK and it still sealed.

It is supposed to be the deluxe box - VERY CONCERNED IT IS THE STANDARD.

The catalogue number on the spine is 5186595937

..according to the website that is the STANDARD box.

the deluxe should be 5249837837.

Can anyone tell me if the deluxe does indeed have a different cat. no. ???

I don't want to break the seal to see if the CDs are in there - in case it voids my return.

Can you see the number of the box on the outside? eg is it between 1-500 (deluxe) or 501-5000 (standard). Not had mine yet, but can already feel an angry email to Rhino coming on...

Is there an invoice in the package that says it should be the deluxe? If so I can't see why you can't open it, and then tell them if it's wrong. Had a look at my account on the Rhino site and it says I'm down for the Deluxe, which I guess was the same for you, so I'm going to open mine (if it comes) and then complain-they haven't sent me what I ordered so not my fault-they're 2 different items on their site. Maybe they're sending the CD's and print separately to deluxe orderers, so all the boxes sent out are then the same-ok, I'm giving Rhino too much credit-they've just ballsed it up...

I've sent Warner/Rhino an e-mail asking them to confirm that they've sent me a Deluxe boxset or not (which is what it stated in my ordere e-mail). I've also warned them that I'll return it if it's a Standard boxset...

Let's see if they bother replying...

There's no need to rub it in, Adam :(. I don't know for sure what catalogue no. is printed on the deluxe set, because I didn't get it . But I do know for certain that the standard set I got has the catalogue no. 5186595937 on the spine + in the EAN code, while the invoice unequivocally says 5249837837 for the Deluxe set. So, if yours has 5186595937 on the spine, I'm afraid you're in the same boat as me.

Littleboylost - yes I see what you are saying but I wouldn't put it past Rhino to print the same catalogue number on all the sets (and just bung the CDs in the Deluxe sets).

...probably a forlorn hope I know. But I do know that if this box turns out to be wrong it'll be the last Warners/Rhino JD/NO product I ever buy.

Hmm, I think I received the deluxe set. I also ordered deluxe.

No. is 0428/5000

EAN on back of box is: 5051865959373

Two CDs inside and an art piece by Saville.

But apart from being lucky about getting what i ordered: the artwork of the singles is appalling! Very cheap repros of the original covers. Is this supposed to be art???

This is also confirmation that what we effectively paid for is two cds of tracks that are already featured on the set plus a piece of Saville's art - bearing in mind you can get downloads off itunes for £12 that includes the "Colony" video and the standard set has a link for downloading all twenty songs.

Added to the distribution shenanigans - and the bull-filled Stephen Morris interview on itunes where he mentions about having the flexi nicked and "it's great to hear these tracks again after all these years" (hang on a minute didn't he get a copy of the H & S Box Set) this farce of a release is proving to be more than I can possibly bear.

This art piece is the only thing that's worth anything. I actually quite like. The rest is pure crap. I think about burning the covers of those singles, they are a disgrace to the original artwork. I wish I'd never seen them.

...well I agree you shouldn't "have" to weigh the box. However, Rhino have stated that if you break the seal you won't get a refund. Therefore it maybe wise not to break the seal unless you have to. I am still going to push for a refund even though I have broken the seal now.

When you get an item you must open to control it.What will you do when were all records are exactly the same one.You never find it out when you have it still closed.

They must do a refund and they should think about their complete disaster distribution.I will dont accept anything else as sending me a deluxe set.The Standart set you can get in a month for halfpric.I m sure.

I am not going to send the standard box set back, if they can't deliver the confirmed one. It's german right, they have to pay a compensation then. I would see the received one as part of the compensation.

I've bought the iTunes Lp. Nice interview with Stephen about the whole thing. On initial listen the remastering seems pretty good. Certainly as good as Recycle. I have ordered the Standard boxset from HMV (which states it is on pre-order - 13th December release). Who Knows? Amazon and HMV both said 6th but then seemed to put it back. I don't trust Rhino so haven't ordered from that shower of shiteheads.

What do I have?

Oh and here's the email I've written to Warner Customer Services (not yet sent):

Hello,

I received a copy of the Joy Division +- boxset today. I have a feeling that the copy I have received is the 'standard', not the 'deluxe' version I ordered.

The delivery invoice says that the 'Product number' should be 5052498378371, which matches the product code for the 'deluxe' version on the Rhino website: http://www.rhino.co.uk/store/products,-plus-minus-deluxe\_39547.htm

However, the number on the spine of the box is 5186595937. This matches the product code for the 'standard' version on the Rhino website: http://www.rhino.co.uk/store/products,-plus-minus-standard\_39546.htm

The EAN number (the one on the barcode) is 5051865959373.

Your returns policy states that you will not accept any returns that have been opened. It would seem the only way I have to clarify which version I have is to open the box, thus forfeiting my right of return should this prove to be the wrong item.

As you are no doubt aware from your inbox, I am not the only customer in this situation. I refer you to this messageboard thread just in case: http://neworderonline.com/Forums/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=48783&PageIndex=1

I paid £75 to receive one of the first 500 of this boxset - the 'deluxe' version. That's what I expected to receive. Please can you clarify which version I have and if it is the 'standard' version, what I have to do to receive the correct one?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark - I suspect sadly you have the Standard box as the weight and numbers on the box exactly match my Standard box.

I also suspect that Rhino will not be able to tell you what you have got.

I'm glad you wrote that Email. I have sent similar ones myself - the first one around lunchtime today - but have got no answers yet. I guess the Rhino Customer Service Team are busy!

I have hunted high and low on the net for a phone number for Rhino. I'd love to have a rant at someone.

Not posted here for ages, but got my set today and when I saw the thread title I thought "Oh maybe I'm not the only one then?"

And yep...ordered deluxe, money taken at time of order, not despatch (always dodgy that) and got mine today and it's the standard one.

And if they think I'm paying the costs to send that back to Germany to get the right fricking thing I paid for they've got another thing coming.

It doesn't matter one bit if you have opened the box (to discover you have the wrong one), in regards to returning it. How else will you know you've been sent the wrong one? (yes I know you can weigh it, but...) The item is not as described, simple as. Straightforward refund or replacement (although I'm not sure what Rhino would replace it with).

I can't believe Rhino have fucked up AGAIN as well...

Sadly I too have received the standard box set today when i was expecting the deluxe one I ordered. I suggest that Rhino/Warners need to forward the missing items to all customers who have been inconvenienced in this way. After all that's £25 difference in price and a lot of very loyal fans! Also I have to agree with the above member who commented that the overall quality of the package is a little poor. The 7" covers look quite unremarkable and a bit cheap in appearance and texture in contrast to the high quality we've always received from Joy Division releases in the past. Disapointing.... :(

I should have realised this would have been the case after the poor job Rhino did with The Smiths 7" singles box set in 2008. The sleeves in that looked like mediocre versions of the Rough Trade originals.

I'm still waiting for my Deluxe box to arrive. Does anyone know how Rhino will replace the Standard boxes with the Deluxe ones when the Deluxe ones have sold out?

I can't see how they will be able to do it unless they reprint and forward us the saville prints and repress more CD's. I suppose this will dilute the limited edition nature of the product but they will have to rectify this or risk losing a lot of future customers. I'm particularly keen to get hold of the cd versions of the remastered tracks as this is what I especially wanted the deluxe version for.

Rhino release another NO/JD turd? Shock. Horror. I am a bit taken aback that some fans are still surprised at all this as there has not been a truly decent JD/NO reissue for the best part of a decade. Truly, where will it end?

If you're lucky enough to own a large selection of the original Factory releases then hold them close to your bosom... they are truly as good as it gets. None and I do mean none of this Warners/Rhino stuff will be worth much in years to come from a collectable sense.

There, I've said it

uk buyers - see sales of goods act as below:and distance selling regs even further down :

Relevant or Related Legislation: Sale of Goods Act 1979. Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994. The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002.

Key Facts: • Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).

• Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description.

• Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.

• It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract.

• If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)

• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

• If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit

• In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

• After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

Just had a proper look at the boxset - I fully agree ,it looks cheap and is badly put together. If they don't send me the deluxe boxset that I paid for , then il be getting a refund. No way are ten crappy 7" singles and a white box worth £50.

Guess what, same here, ordered deluxe, got standard. Very bloody standard too. Hope the deluxe is a bit more deluxe. Covers look shit and the box was bent. Great job Rhino. I opened mine and if Rhino don't send me a deluxe version I will get very angry indeed.

What a crock of shit! If i'd known it was going to be this poor i really wouldn't have bothered. Can't wait to see what Savile has come up with. Fucking idiots!

The probability as a DeLuxe-Boxset buyer to get the right item is actually around 1:5.

500 DeLuxe-Boxsets were sold. After the actual probability there should have been 2500 of 4500 Standard-Boxsets sold.

Warner send this email to the customers:

Just had the same email. Meh. Fair enough, I guess, but something still feels not right.

I mean, wouldn't *someone* at the warehouse have noticed a large pile of 'deluxe' bits for a box set that sold out almost as soon as it went out?

I fully expect my numbered insert to be numbered somewhere around 750...

to b ehonest i think the lady (aka you lot) doth protest too much....

BUT. Yes. I did get a standard rather than an deluxe which is really annoying!!! however I have just got an email from the arvato people i think saying it was their fault???

anyway on to more material issues...

  1. i disagree that the box feels cheap. i actually really like it. and the sleeve designs... saville oversaw the artwork. do you think the label can over rule saville ?? im not sure. i think they serve as homáge to the originals and are quite ok.

  2. the music sounds really good and the mp3s are really really good. i've not listnd to the whole box set yet but 4 records b2b and genuinely enjoyed it... mp3s are better than recycle 100%.

It's the cheapest way for them to solve the problem.I believe it. If it would be wrong and there would be for example 800 Deluxe-Boxsets then, it would be the same in green.

As for the artwork, I really can't see any better way of reinventing the originals other than presenting them in this way. The original releases were a disparate bunch on different formats and with different sleeves, not to mention that the original artwork doesn't even exist in some cases anymore.

There's a writeup about it here:

They're probably opening up the deluxe ones and taking the relevant bits out to send to you.

Thanks for the update Confusion - although I haven't got the email saying their going to send me the missing stuff yet.

I think this is Rhino's way of digging themselves out of hole. They know if they did nothing they would get a lot of returns asking for a full refund (and their campaign would lose a lot of money).

I agree that their will now be more deluxe sets in circulation than before making the set less rare. Also I am disappointed with the quality of what I have received in the Standard box. The print quality of the Singles sleeves is not up to standard. For anyone still considering buying a standard box I would advise against it.

...I for one will never buy another Rhino JD /NO product again. What Rhino have done here is further wreck their relationship with the bands biggest fans (i.e those people that sprang for the Deluxe set).

They say that all the deluxe sets are in the warehouse - what about the one instance we've found where someone ordered the standard box and got the deluxe?

And for those that are still waiting - do we have to mail Rhino to confirm if the extra stuff is missing now they have sent this? I can't trust them to send the extras on spec.

What a total mess this whole thing is. It's embarrassing.

I am confused. If the distribution ppl are responsible, (although employed by rhino) and they have stated that it is their mistake. and that the deluxe are still in the warehouse...

why would there be more in circulation and how are rhino directly responsible

surely they can not just lie. i dont think even they would be that stupid.....

That's ONE instance. How many Standard ones are likely to have sold online anyway? Most people who missed out on the Deluxe one will just wait until it's cheap on Amazon.

This is all Rhino's fault for not bothering to put a sticker saying "Deluxe Version" on the the deluxe sets. I imagine that the distribution center confronted with a pile of identical looking boxes just sent them out with no regard for what people had ordered.

I suspect that Rhino will now be forced to remanufacture extra CDs and art sheets to send out. So god knows when we will receive them - by Xmas next year if we are lucky.

Let's face it if the 500 original boxes were still in the Warehouse it would be easier to send them out complete in the box (rather than open them and extract the missing bits to send). Someone is telling porkies here.

Well...at least this way we don't all have to send our standard boxes back, and wait for Rhino to refund our postage costs.

But it's more of a pisser if people who ordered the standard and got the deluxe at a cheaper price.

Have just received this email from Rhino.

"Thank you for purchasing the Joy Division +- boxset. We have been informed that there have been a small number of mis-deliveries - some customers have received a standard boxset instead of a deluxe vers.

If you are affected by this problem, please accept our sincere apologies - we strive to provide a great service and undoubtedly we have let you down.

We aim to update everyone as to what's going on and how we will sort this situation in the next 48 hours.

If you have recieved the wrong boxset, please let us know at rhino.d2c@warnermusic.com - not all e-mails will be replied to but every one will be read and logged."

Does this replace the earlier email?

I've had 4 emails from them about it now. And all for a "small number" of problems

Postman just been. Still haven't received anything. Anyone else still waiting? (barring snow)

UPS just delivered. The wrong one of course. I guess they're going to have to cannibalise the deluxe versions in their warehouse to get the CDs, art pieces and cardboard inserts, numbered 1-500, and get these sent out. These boxes will then have to be resealed and sold as standard versions.

But the packaging does look cheap. There's no way the standard version is worth £50. £20-£25 I reckon. It looks exactly like the aforementioned Smiths one from 2008.

I also received the e-mail today saying the 'missing' deluxe items would be sent onto me, Inc a numbered 1-500 cardboard insert - does that mean it's still limited to 500 even though some ppl have got a deluxe in their hands and yet ordered a standard? To quote another Manchester icon 'repackage reissue' Think next time I'll just buy the iTunes version at least I would have got the videos!

got fobbed off a bit but the person i spoke to sounded genuinely a bit upset about the situation and said sorry about 10000 times !

he said that their 3rd party distribution centre made a big mistake and are responsible- he said that they had been working hard and closely with the group to please fans and that tey even had the saville piece made in manchester to make it "the real deal" !!

he said a further statement should be out soon but no-one who ordered a standard will be getting a delux... and also that the numbering might be skewed now but that it will still be only 500 ppl with deluxe boxes.

so there we go... we shall soon see!

I think, it's more a communication problem between Rhino and the distribution centre. As Adam said, if there would be stickers on it, it wouldn't have happened. A few guys have already the complete Deluxe-Set. It can't be, all Saville pieces would be in Manchester now.

Forget to mention. Courier is UPS. You have to join Scientology first to get the parcel.

Well, at the end of the day, it's fair game that they have owned up to the monumental cock up (M1 revisited) and are rectifying the situation. Here's hoping this won't take too long.

And as one other poster has already pointed out, this stupid mishandling of the shipments is obscuring the fact that the actual songs have been mastered properly, with decent levels and all (obviously taking into account that so far I've only been able to hear the mp3 files).

But don't get me started on the fact that apparently, not all 21 tracks are included on the 2 (two!) CDs that belong in the Deluxe set...

Really, does any of this matter?. I mean, really?

It's just a box of stuff we won't use.

Which will arrive eventually. To be placed on a shelf after the briefest of perusals, like a postcard from an Aunty. Noones going to actually play the vinyl, are they?. We've all heard the tunes a million times before so what's the point in stressing?. Tis the season to be jolly etc etc.

And btw, I saw, even held, the standard version last night, at the +- launch event at RTE. It looks ace. Better than I was expecting. Something to look forward to.

Quick question - Where did the inspiration for the +- label come from and who chose it? (Anyone else at the Q&A last night, need not reply).

I ordered Deluxe and received Deluxe today. Can anybody advise on the Saville insert? It's bizarre. Do the outer layers peel off? I can't discern wtf it's supposed to be. Sleeves are photos of original sleeves which seems like a very bizarre and cheap way to do it.

By tilting my box I could tell it included the CD's. If you don't want to open your box to tell, you should be able to tilt it up and down and hear the cd's slide.

"the missing items to upgrade the Joy Devision Plus Minus + - Standard Box to a Deluxe Box are on their way to our warehouse and will be sent out to you as soon as possible.

We apologize most sincerely for the long wainting time!"

...not sure what "wainting time" is - but good that they are on the case.

...strange that these items are being sent to the warehouse - I thought they said they were already there - maybe they have had to knock a few more sets up.

...no new material - same tracks as on the vinyl. The mastering is different so if we are lucky the sound quality might be better than existing CDs.

already emailed warners with pdf of invoice stating deluxe

"Just got this update email from Rhino :-

"the missing items to upgrade the Joy Devision Plus Minus + - Standard Box to a Deluxe Box are on their way to our warehouse and will be sent out to you as soon as possible.

We apologize most sincerely for the long wainting time!""

I haven't received this email which I find a bit worrying. How are Rhino going to know who to send the deluxe contents to? Everyone who ordered the deluxe version? Or only people who contact them to say they didn't receive the right version?

I ordered the posh one, but nothing arrived here.

I've not got a record player anyway. What are they going to do about that? eh???

Just received an email from Rhino/Warners:

"If you stop Pablo Bastardo from posting on NOOL, we'll send him a record player (deluxe)"

What should I do now?

New material? The band is dead 30 years ago!:confused2: Such a "logistical" nightmare for a 10*7" box set and a password to download the same tracks in mp3. A bit silly!!

I'm glad to have bought anything.

I don't know if I've missed it but what about the main reason for ordering the Deluxe set, the limited Saville art product? Is it all that?

The paper on the 7" sleeves, just standard cheap mass market paper? The labels on the vinyl, any creativity there? No special messages in the end grooves? I suppose people assumed that since Saville at least had some involvement in the project, there would be something above average other than it being very expensive.

Poor sods you guys....luckily I was too busy to know abt this JD box before it got sold out..otherwise I would have been caught in same situation with you guys. My anxiety would have been ten times worse due to my location in Oz - far away in the áss'end of the world.

Anyway when I learnt that those first 500 were sold out, I didnt bother getting the standard...hoping they'll go the same fate as those rhino's JD albums memory boxset'...I got one of those for a quarter of the price recently, having mustered the patience to wait 3 years :D

This is the same Saville who designed a load of blank albums for the LP boxset and a plain white album sleeve with large orange letters 'N' & 'O' on it etc etc. Frankly I'm not too sure what was expected on the design front, his style is and always has been a deceptively minimalisitic approach. Don't mistake that for 'cheapness'.

As for the price, this is more to do with market forces and the price of pressing limited vinyl these days. When they could easily shift 10-20K of any release you can afford to do more. A vinyl album these days can often retail at £20-25, which seems an awful lot compared to the £3.99 you'd see in the 80s.

And how many people living in 2010 actually own equipment in their homes to play the vinyl? Are record players really selling more than CD players or mp3 players these days? Do cars often have record players in them instead of other audio? I doubt it. I'm not slagging off vinyl, by the way.

I could imagine some of the older people might have record players. Maybe some vinyl fans might actually buy a record player to play what they own. As a young person, I don't know anyone my age who owns a record player, or vinyl for that matter. Not even people my parents age own record players any more. So maybe they have higher prices because fewer people buy vinyl compared to mp3s or CDs (and even people aren't buying CDs massively these days, either).

That's the market forces I was on about. Vinyl is now a specialist format, not even on sale in HMV anymore (practically the UK's only record shop chain now).

Mine has arrived but standard version rather than deluxe..

My JD +- box

Rhino.. not replied to email Warner Distributors got standard - you'll get the deluxe bits to add to your standard package..

Shocking service really!

I just mean that people are saying they are not impressed with the whole package and sleeves. Factory usually had unique and above average productions, hardly run of the mill. Saville has seemed less interested the last decade anyway, but Joy Division and Saville together can't help but make one compare this to Factory Records.

.. I agree that the design of this box sucks. I hate the way they have photographed the original sleeves (some of which are none too mint). The new single with the picture of the Closer sleeve is particularly poorly done with a shadow on the right edge and no corresponding edges on the other 3 sides. Looks appalling in my opinion - a kid with a cheap scanner and Photoshop could've done a better job.

i think the outside of the box is actually really nice. it's clean, a bit random and typically jd.

the inside is NOT typically jd but i dont see why its such a problem tbh. it's a bit different, i actually quite like it... i dont own the originals but now i have a great reference to go by! it reminds me of a time that was and that will never be again......... not trying to be the original or better than, like some bands/artists try and do... audibly it is superior but packaging wise to me it says this was then, it cant be repeated, lets just enjoy the music.

and so i shall!

Full Rhino explanation of sorry saga here:-

...as we suspected there will ultimately be more Deluxe bits in circulation. Also some lucky people who already have Deluxe bits will get 2 sets.

to be honest i think you have to give them credit for posting that... it does appear that they got messed about....

i get the feeling that that certain ppl here are going to hate on them either way, which is a shame i think... but oh well.

Yes fairplay to them for posting that not often big corporation hold their hands up (despite the fact that they are firmly pointing the finger at their contracted companies) :-

"We are very sorry about this situation. It’s embarrassing for us, especially considering we spent such a long time ensuring that the product was mistake free. We painstakingly researched facts and figures, we visited Manchester, Stephen, Hooky and involved Jon Savage and Peter Saville to get it all right. We have been let down at the last hurdle by a company meant to perform the simplest of actions. Please accept our apologies."

Which combination would be the most collectable issue? This is hilarious.

Surely if there was a bright red removable sticker on each box stating whether it was a Standard or Deluxe version all this confusion and finger pointing could have been avoided,so I would blame Cinram for that not Arvato. In the explanation given they do admit that both boxes looked quite similar to each other. Also the "Saville Perspex art object" is a piece of plastic with a +- on it,wow!

  1. Yes. Christmas is coming up. Next week.

  3. What is hilarious?

More and more I am convinced that New Order / Joy Division catalogue would have been better in hands of an independent label. I think Mute would have handled the whole campaign better.

Mute are not entirely independent, they were part of EMI from 2002-2009 and are still in some way connected (the name is licensed back for instance).

It's on the inner tracklisting/detail insert card.Bottom left hand corner is the number - ?/5000.

altho obviously the new order f'ups are the fault of the label, it does seem a bit unfair to 100% blame rhino on this one.....

i would like to c some of u do a better job, because i don't think i could. i know it cant b that hard but there must be a reason that these mistakes happen and rhino specific have a history of good box-sets. i have the smiths box-set and this is as good a quality, just a delivery problem! and seriously the remastering here is tip top..... better than recycle. i dont mean to be romantic about it all but i just dont understand the adoration for some1 doing it for free via recycle when the band have a go and ppl get the arse as if they are insulting the fanbase by doin so. bit of a poisonous attitude on here sometimes.

Just had this from warners - wonder what the special compensation gift is.....and who are "Joy Devision" LOL

Thanks for your message.

We regret to inform you that we are not able to send you the Joy Devision Plus Minus Deluxe Box due to delivery problems in a timely manner.

The only way to make sure that you will receive your complete order in time for Christmas is to send you the replacement parts to upgrade your standard to a deluxe boxset.

We assure that the deluxe boxset is the same as the standard box with the extra elements you will be sent.

Additionally we will be sending you a special compensation gift in the new year.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any convenience this has caused you.

The Smiths box-set was a joke; it wasn't even a complete document of the singles.

If Recycle would of posted their Material in Lossless instead of MP4's, you would find their work is better.

Nobody has a problem with the band getting paid, I want to see them get paid; but the JD and NO releases keep getting fucked up. This is just another example on so many fronts. As far as JD releases, the audio on the box-set was fucked up, the 2007 reissues were fucked up, and so on. This material has been available for 30 years, and you will find that the original releases have the best SQ.

That is why, what Recycle does is very welcomed by most. I think you will find, since you are a Smith's fan, that the recycle work on the Smiths will be much more comprehensive then your cherished box-set; you will also find unreleased material that you won't find on your box-set, and if the audio was posted in lossless, you would find it's better then the box-set. I don;t know about you, but when I buy a box-set that collects the singles; I want all the singles, not a fragmented example.

What did you think of the Joy Division Recycle Chesty? Do you happen to notice the pitch corrected tracks, unreleased material, the artwork, the audio? The recycle destroys that Vinyl Box-sex.

ok.... but at no point did it pretend it was !? there is obviously enough for at LEAST another smiths vinyl box??? if n e one had said its the comprehemsive collection then i would understand ur point here but as they haven't i'm not sure what it is.

Darkman wrote: If Recycle would of posted their Material in Lossless instead of MP4's, you would find their work is better.

well in which case i guess ur argument needs to go to johnny marr and stephen morris not the label as they did the mastering ! again i just dont by this... if the label has original tapes and are using a proper studio and have the band in tow.... and recycle is someone who was not there when it wasw ritten or originally recorded... again i dont buy.

ok. fair point on getting paid. pls can u elaborate on the box-set fuck up??? we do not need to discuss new order. in all honesty tho the mp3s i have heard from the new set (the official ones) sound amazing and i have to disagree.... although obviously it is personal prefernce on that front.

Darkman wrote: That is why, what Recycle does is very welcomed by most.

most. not all. and most importantly for me there is radio silence from the bands..... if they advocate it i will accept but if they have a problem with it then im afraid i do 2.

well again here i do have to disagree. comprehensive maybe as we have already discussed. unreleased, again maybe because there is no doubt plenty of material that is unreleased by smiths... but audio quality, i think u have to accept that the work johnny marr did was amazing on sound of the smiths..... i erally cant accept that anyone else could do better. end. back to original tapes and band member influences...

well yes i agree in part on that. although i dread to think how new order will be broken down!! 5 boxsets no doubt. no bad thing..... proibably cost a bomb.

i think it is a nice idea... but its not legit... and i am not a file sharer. if tracks need pitch correctin i find it weird that no-1 has ever done it before. unreleased material nice. artwork....... not saville, not interested...

and again. i do disagree. the vinyl box set mp3s sound amazin.

You said the Smiths box was "rhino specific have a history of good box-sets. i have the smiths box-set and this is as good a quality" Again that Smiths box is a joke; a fragment of the singles. You said it was good quaitly, I say it's shit! Really you want another vinyl box-set...lmfao

I'm not arguing the band, but you Sir! Why in the world would someone who works on the audio need to be there when the material was recorded; all they need is the proper equipment, sources, and good ears! With that logic, I could see why you don’t buy it.

The audio on the box-set is all fucked up; not even close to the original master done by Hannett. Don't even get me started on the 2007 reissues; the albums and gigs were a complete mess.

I'm not talking about the original mastering; I'm talking about a complete document; with extra's. All that material has been released. I think what this boils down to is, your the type of fan who will keep buying the same old shit time after time; don't you ever want to hear anything new?

Talking about JD vinyl box, not NO. I don't think it would be 5 box sets; but yeah if they were vinyl you would buy them..

Lmfao...the original artwork was used. And as for the pitch corrected tracks, them being recorded at the wrong speed was never caught; and now fixed. Stranger things have happened. What you think that a record company doesn't make mistakes.......

If you want shitty MP3's that lose SoundQuality, then that is your choice. I will take Lossless over mp3 any day.

Regarding the pitch correction done to Dead Souls et al, it's only a supposition that it was an original mistake to be corrected. The pitch they were put out originally could well have been the band and label's intention all along (and yes I know that they're not in concert pitch).

Very true, and that is a great point. But "these days" and ice age" were a complete mess, and needed to be fixed. I honestly like the original un-corrected version "Dead Souls" to the pitich corrected one.

well now you are just repeatin yourself, and subsequently i have to aswell... as i said above, its obviously not all the singles. and i really am genuinely quite happy with it. if you dont like it then i'm not laughing at you for that, ur attitude seems to be quite piss poor..... i can do what i want with my money, if what i buy is not to your taste then... surely, we must be different people!?? oh wait... so to re-iterate my point... i think the smiths box was beautiful. not complete, but great. i think this box is nothing short of that one in terms of quality............

well u say this but u appear to have issue with the mastering in general and that is done by marr/morris. my logic is the best availalbe / original source tapes in th ebest equipped studio available wit some1 who was there 1st time and knows what it shoudl soun dlike.... it seems that ur point is that the aforemention method is not the ebst way of doin it but i just do not c how that can be.

Ordered Standard and got standard (0025/5000).

Standard Box Set selling already on EIL.com for £70:00, but then I've gone and opened mine!

Received the box set at last. Number 43 but I only ordered the standard box. Number 1-500 were meant to be the deluxe ones. Wonder if that means I will be getting the extras? Anyway I like the look of the box and the singles sound great, being a big vinyl lover this is a decent box set for me as about 6 of the 7";s I only had on CD. It is expensive but in my opinion a good way to celebrate 30 years since ICB. An nice keep safe to add to the collection.

Numbers 1-500 are now a mixture since they've had to cannibalize them.

That's for all the ones who didn't get one originally in the 1-500 range. That said when they send out the replacements to everyone then some people will have two numbers.

makes sense to me..... basically the range is now -500 to 5000, 500 people will have multiple numbers; maybe rhino could do a number amnesty or somethin...... surrender ur old number and get an mp3!

Just spoken to someone responsible for Rhino at Warners in London. He says the deluxe contents will be sent out this week. And they're coming from Arvato in Germany like the box itself. So my guess is, it might arrive in time for Xmas, it might not. And it's coming via UPS. So woe betide if you're not in when they call or you'll be picking it up from their depot 30-40 miles away.

Oh, and he didn't know anything about nolanguagejustsound.com.

Another funny thing is that UK Buyers have P&P free for parcels from Germany. German Buyers had to pay 12 quid for P&P. But now we know why P&P was so expensive.

Yes, it was obviously planned. But even the people who got the Deluxe Boxes already, had different numbers.

As for the price, this is more to do with market forces and the price of pressing limited vinyl these days. When they could easily shift 10-20K of any release you can afford to do more. A vinyl album these days can often retail at £20-25, which seems an awful lot compared to the £3.99 you'd see in the 80s.

Fuck me. That post has just depressed me more than finding out today that I might lose my job.

i have a record player, my kids are 15/19 and they both play vinyl all the time. it's in the lounge so when they have friends round its the center of attention! they love it and even bring their own records to play on it 'cos they dont have one at home. it should be compulsory to have one!

I bought Blue Monday in 1983 on vinyl and it still sounds pretty good,I couldn't imagine not having a record player.

I have a very expensive British made turntable and the sound is far superior to my CD setup (which is pretty fine too) but I tend to play CD's more often for convenience. The boxset arrived today. Nice, I can appreciate why people think the sleeves are naff (I do too) but why try to copy the originals when they would never be the originals? I have most of the originals so reproductions are always going to be second best without the age/history aspect. Don't know why I bought it?

Nobody has. The original mistake wasn't theirs but their communication is appalling. Why couldn't they have emailed everyone to tell them what was going on? And also to say that the contents have now been sent out (which they now have been, apparently).

Got my missing bits this morning (in time for Xmas - cutting it fine Rhino).

My set is -173 (I think all people who have had their standard boxes "deluxed" now have a minus limited numbers).

Quite like the orange perspex art piece (once I figured out that you have to peel all the sticky labels off).

Bit concerned that the CDs say they are promo copies not for sale. Are everyones CDs promo copies (or just the people getting missing bits). One wonders if they just slung the promo CDs in - instead of knocking up new copies?

UPS is fucking things up. Last night I requested they divert it to my work today - last night they confirmed it would be OK and a further call at 3:00 to them got the affirmation they would deliver it to my work.

15 minutes later they tried to deliver it to my flat.

I've got a further confirmation that they will actually be delivering to my work tomorrow, but there is nothing to suggest this on the tracker.

The thing that really fucks me off is that more often than not when a consumer orders goods online they are not given the choice of delivery method - if they were I would always go Royal Mail - the trouble I've had with couriers over the years are legion.

I got both the original full deluxe set, and the new "negative number" set.

The art piece is not the same.

The original one has "Peter Saville edition of 500" etched into the bottom of it.

The new one does not.

I have number 00xx/5000 and now -xxx/-500.

They really made a mess out of all of this. I just thought I would let everyone know that they did this.

To be fair, couriers are having the biggest f'in nightmare and backlog they've ever experienced. I had 12,000 boxes of stuff queueing to go into Scotland up to the 21st when they finally started moving.

So be fair to them, it's not exactly been a normal run up to Xmas.

But in general, you are right. They are a bunch of c___s.

Yeah, well I haven't got ANYTHING yet.

Re the couriers.....

After promising me that the stuff would come to my office on Xmas Eve - I was told at 2:30 (and yes I had to ring them) that it hadn't left the depot and I had to pick it up from there!

Got there to find a massive queue - waited 45 minutes before eventually picking up the package. The place was in chaos - a woman with her boy had been there for the third time only to be turned away again because her package could not be traced. This was a present for the boy and you could see he was clearly upset. Similar stories were going on throughout the queue. It was obvious due to mutterings from behind the counter that the call centres and the depot did not have a clue what each other was doing - indeed - one of the simpler things - ie closing time - the call centre warned me the depot would shut at 4pm - whereas it was actually closing at 8!

Anyway - wonder if my deluxe number is one of the more special ones - I'm exactly halfway down the list (-250).

I still haven't received the deluxe contents. And there's been no emails from Rhino at all since 8 December. I can only track the shipment via a tracking no. And Rhino don't respond to emails.

So it looks like they stopped stuffing the 1-5000 boxes with the art piece somewhere in the middle, took what was left, had more created outside the "Edition of 500" to make 500, and hoped that nobody would notice the difference in their "negative" sets.

I guess that means some lucky "Standard" people got the actual edition of 500.

What a total mess.

Honestly, I think they should have Mr. Saville make a new art piece and give that out to the 500 people that have to endure this total cock up.

presumably there are 500 that say edition of 500 & 500 that don't so there are 1000 in total, with all of the second set of 500 being sent out & some of the first set being sent

On the other hand.....(from nolanguagejustsound.com)

"In order to ensure that every single person that ordered a deluxe box gets the deluxe elements, we are having to manufacture a further 134 deluxe pieces by Saville to dispatch. What this means is that 134 lucky people will get 2 Saville Pieces and 2 sets of CDRS. It also means there are 634 Saville pieces in circulation rather than 500"

This would suggest that only 134 pieces do not include this etching - making this the rarer piece.

This is what I would hope - but I believe hibster is probably right.

Has anyone else in the UK not received their delivery of the deluxe contents from UPS? No delivery was attempted at my address up to Friday 24 December (when I was away) and no delivery has been made this week.

I phoned Rhino today to get some answers but the music industry don't work between Xmas and New Year (silly me).

It's 020 7368 2500. It's the number for Warner Music UK. I phoned a few weeks ago as well and asked to speak to someone who was responsible for Rhino. Spoke to a guy who wasn't particularly helpful. He told me the deluxe contents were going to be sent out the following week but he didn't know anything about the dedicated website 'nolanguagejustsound.com', so he can't have known that much. I doubt I'll get much joy if I phone them again next week.

I ordered a Deluxe...and amazingly, got a Deluxe...which I received a few weeks ago, no. 0379/5000.

(orange vinyl etching with stamped limited ed of 500 message)

Late last week, I received the standard->deluxe fill package, this time -30/-500...orange vinyl etching missing stamped message...from what I understand these are rarer, anyway (only 134 of these?)

The promo CD's are all CD-Rs...the inner ring stamping interestingly enough which was present on the original 3P80 1 2 1 (the one with 'Transmission') is missing on the one they resent...though the 3P80 2 1 1 ('Atmosphere' has matrix numbers for both)...though really these would be just the same sort of stamping you'd get on CD-Rs bought at the store.

I'm surprised nobody has noted the pops/crackling (digital-based, not from a needle drop or whatever) on the 'transmission' disc (it's identical on both copies) which is most pronounced during the start of Transmission and Incubation...the Atmosphere disc didn't seem to have an issue. That's my most serious complaint about the whole affair (I was one of the "lucky" ones otherwise)...

Can somebody else confirm their 3P80 1 2 1 has the same issue?

News for Oz NOOL esp. Sydney residents....Saw a bunch of these JD boxsets on the shelf in JB-Hifi store at Galeries Victoria, City.

Bad news is that they are price tagged at $125 each...thats equivalent to GBP-82 or US$125 - RIP-OFF!!!

Another bad news is that they aint the deluxe box...all 4 boxes weigh approx. 670 to 680 grams.

You see, I noticed them last week and thought that it was a wee bit too fast for them to arrive across continents to Down Under. I was privately hoping they might be 'delux-wrongly-sent-as-standard':D ...so I took my missus kitchen scale to the store....yeah, I know I do look silly but it was all done very quick in 40 seconds, only the security cam would notice :D ...yup, weighted every single one of them - disappointed :\ohwell:

I'll just have to wait for my standard edition ordered thru CDwow...fingers crossed :skeptic:

Had the same issue but just received the missing pieces including the 366/500 card. Hopefully everyone else gets theirs too.

Good luck

I just got the extra pieces. I can hear a little pop on the Transmission cd, mainly on digital, though the tracks sound like scratchy vinyl. Both CDs have the numbers and the orange thing has "+ - Peter Saville edition of 500"

So I think I have everything but The only thing I got two of was the inserts , 366/500 and 0542/5000. Sounds like you lucked out.

Liked the idea but the delivery issues soured it a bit.

Happy new year

as I mentioned earlier on the thread, you don't have to weigh them. the deluxe versions have cds in them. the cds are smaller than the box. they clank around in there when you tilt the box. it's clear there's something in there smaller than the 7"s/box dimensions. if it was the standard, you wouldn't hear the cds moving around. you don't have to carry your kitchen scales with you, just tilt the box.

all the remasteres are remastered for vinyl so the cd version would be vinyl-ready tracks put on cd...

...just listened to "Incubation" on the promo CD and OH DEAR OH DEAR - THIS IS HORRIBLE MASTERING.

At the start of Transmission there are some light rustling sounds. However, on Incubation there is some very obvious PHUT, PHUT, PHUT sounds in the background. I listened on Sennheiser HD650 through a tube headphone amp - but you do not need highend equipment to hear this!

It sounds like the kind of error you get with a homemade CDR with a dodgy adhesive label causing the CD player to mis-track. This is appalling - did Steve Morris /Frank Arkwright even bother listening to these tracks?

As I said when they cocked up the contents of the deluxe box - I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER WARNERS-RHINO NEW ORDER / JOY DIVISION PRODUCT AGAIN.

  • by rights we should all be now starting another campaign to get these discs replaced. However, I am starting to lose the will to live over all this - not sure I can be bothered to start another round of replacements.

Chesty, do you happen to work for Warners/Rhino or the band per chance? It's just I've never seen a fan defend JDNO reissues so vociferously on these forums before, especially as most of said reissues have been clearly defective in many ways and the anger expressed by fans in these forums is quite rightly justified.

Don't get me wrong, if you're personally happy with them then that's hunky dory but you can't deny that the vast majority of fanbase reaction to these reissues has been one of abject disappointment at the sheer number of faults and fuck ups

I do feel pretty sorry for everyone who got caught up in this latest Rhino disaster. It's not nice and I've been there myself after paying £75 for at least 5 coffee coasters in the shape of the first edition NO remaster bonus discs. Despite me emailing Rhino twice I got no reply and I'm stuck with them hence why £50 Note's Recycle project was a complete saviour. The work he put into not only the audio but the sleeves blew anything Rhino - or in this case, the band - could do out of the water. Fact.

It's a bit sad really... the fans have put a rocket up the record label and it's hard to disagree it wasn't utterly deserved.

I will be giving that number a go next week, As Rhino have pointed out, the only difference between the standard and deluxe limited edition is 1.the art piece, 2.the cdr's and 3.number insert.

Now if you actually review that;

  1. Art piece is not limited to 500 but at least 634, maybe more and there are 2 different versions 2.The cdr's contain glitches
  2. the numbered inserts are a complete mess with 2 different sets in circulation.

These are not as described, or fit for purpose.

On NYE I asked my friend who's high up in the music bit at HMV head office who his contact at Rhino/Warners was. He replied straight off (before I had a chance to tell him what it was to do with) that they were "a bit rubbish now". How so few words can sum up this whole thing...

Hmm, I received the deluxe items but the orange "thing" is plain, no etching... no further comment...

Interesting reply from warner customer services, doesn't quite add up... What about the 2 different sets of art pieces, those with the etching and those without, and that customers who actually received the complete deluxe set have been sent an additional art piece... I make that more than 500!

Hello Gary,

thanks for your message.

There are only 500 art pieces, it is a limited edition.

If you are not satisfied with your deluxed box, we can only offer you to return your complete box for a refund.

We apologize sincerely for any inconvenience caused!

Kind regards

I received the deluxe contents today. The package was sent to a fictional non-existant address for some reason.

...well after numerous phone calls to Rhino I finally managed to speak to a human being about the audio problems on the CDs.

The person I spoke to didn't want to talk to me about it - but finally admitted the Project Manager was Gary Lancaster. I asked for an email address but they refused saying they don't give out email addresses.

So I fired up Google and searched a few likely permutations of email addresses. I got lucky - the email address we need is :-

Gary.Lancaster@warnermusic.com

....I have now emailed Gary about the problems with the CDs (Incubation especially) and to his credit he responded pretty quickly. Gary has said he will pass my comments onto Steve Morris - I have basically asked for the discs to be corrected (as previously with New Order remasters). I will let you know when I get a response.

...hmmm interesting response from Mr Lancaster :-

"Also I must add... the CDRS really are CDRS. I have listened and I can hear what you are saying; however I fear that maybe it is just a bad transfer on the CDRS as they are not proper glass pressed masters, they were simply review/teaser copies for press. Having listened to the mp3's which you can redeem, the tracks seem fine there and it's all from the same source...

We'll await their response but ultimately I'm not sure what there is to be done really... maybe I could burn you a CDR of the + / - promo CD tracks? It wouldn't be branded like the others mind....

gary"

...I have responded via email as follows:-

Hi Gary,

Yes I did wonder whether the problem was to do the discs rather than the mastering.

However, the fact remains that the set was £75 and advertised as coming with CDs not CDRs. If you are going to release an expensive boxset you need to provide proper glass masters. I don't think your argument would stand up in a legal case of whether the product was fit for purpose.

I was shocked actually that the discs were CDRs and stamped "Not for Resale". I'm sure this is not what most people expected.

Can you look into the possibility of a proper glass master reissue with branding on the disc labels please.

Thanks,

Adam

...ok bad news I'm afraid Gary is now saying there is no way we will get a proper CD replacement. Gary's argument is that the discs were advertised as "promotional" so therefore we should have expected them to be CDRs (and presumably expected dodgy sonics as well).

Gary has offered to burn a new CDR on a generic blank disc for anyone that wants it. However, I declined as I am only interested in a pukka product with proper labels etc. Overall I am not impressed with Rhino again. However, at least Gary has now apologized to me and does seem to have been concerned about the standard of this product. Gary's latest response:-

"The New Order releases were A&R'd, compiled and put together by Warner Bros. (who own London Records) in conjunction with New Order; marketed by Rhino UK. I worked at Rhino then however was not involved with those releases, it did however make me acutely aware that this needed to be right, which is why it's so irritating that these two issues (one of which being delivery) have happened. Devastating, in fact.

All in all, very irritating as contrary to what you may believe, we really did spend a lot of time working on this project, indeed, having Saville do the artwork, Jon Savage do the compiling and Stephen + Manager do the mastering, we thought we'd cracked it. But there we go.

Apologies that this product is sub-standard..... i'm not sure what else to say on the matter other than sorry!

Happy new year! "

Well to be fair Adam he wasn't exactly going to say "Oh, let me go and fire up the CD pressing plant and I'll send you out two new silver pressed discs" But yes, I admire your determination in chasing it up. If anything you got them to admit it is a "sub-standard" which is pretty damning.

Hang onto your Heart And Soul boxsets... them were the days when reissues were still being done correctly inside Warners. Clearly not now. Everything on this vinyl boxset is on Heart And Soul and even better, on convenient CD with decent mastering  didn't the band, Rob Gretton and Andy Robinson oversee the original remastering on that 1997 boxset? I've never understood why they saw the need to do it again in 2007 and again in 2010 other than as a marketing gimmick. So it's re-re-remastered?

I still find it incredulous this +- boxset is going for 100 quid+ on Ebay at the moment when people could pay just £18 on Amazon and get a sealed copy of Heart And Soul delivered to their door which has all the vinyl tracks and so much plus the audio is pristine.

Yes I agree Douglas - Heart & Soul was the last decent product done by Warners. In fact I spend a lot of my time looking for old 1980s mastered CDs on eBay these days. In the last month I have scored original no barcode versions of the 1st 4 OMD albums - it's ridiculous how much better these sound than the latest remasters.

I knew it was a pretty forlorn hope to get new glass masters out of them. However, I thought I'd play the "you did new versions of the New Order discs" ploy - but to no avail sadly.

Apparently it was Gary's idea to chuck these CDs into the Deluxe package. Gary has told me they were not originally going to be included but he knew obsessives like us love bonus material so he pushed to include them.

Right, all received now. They're all laid out on my desk.

Not sure what to do next. I've still not got a record player. Is anyone planning to do anything with the art?

Thanks to the poster above who identified Gary Lancaster as a point of contact. Gary has been really helpful in sorting out my issues with the "upgrading" process. In fact he's gone way beyond the call of duty, and managed to restore my faith in this project.

If someone like him was tasked with looking after the JD/NO legacy I'm confident it would be managed with the sensitivity and care it deserves...

I'm still very happy I passed on that......same old/ same old..............I could care less about what the resale value is, all I care about is the music.

Until the band stop hoarding their archive and tape collections, and release some of it, I will keep passing on these cash grabs.........

That's nothing - somebody mailed me last week and offered to pay $700 for a white-label by A Guy Called Gerald (okay, it is limited, but I have two copies)! :p

They're probably all really pleased with their investment and the return that they can probably expect from it.

Rock and roll.
