New New Order ! ![]()
After googling I am hoping it isn't another version of "Elegia".
Hmm... WFTSC out-take maybe?
'brand new never released new order track' WHAAAAAATT? If this is true I can only imagine it's a Sirens out-take, there can't be anything else in the vaults can there? I remember Barney telling a journo the Sirens burst of creativity was rare as they normally just did enuff trax to fill the albumm then pissed off home. 8/9, no less. Thanks for posting this, I'm intrigued...

Joy Division - Transmission Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Joy Division - Isolation Joy Division - She's Lost Control Joy Division - Atmosphere New Order - Ceremony New Order - Temptation New Order - Blue Monday New Order - Thieves Like Us New Order - The Perfect Kiss New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle New Order - True Faith New Order - World In Motion New Order - Fine Time New Order - Regret New Order - Crystal New Order - Krafty New Order - Hellbent
Due for release on 06 June 2011 www.play.com
I hope its not some crappy instrumental. I suppose it could only be from WFTSC or, at a push, Republic as the Get Ready stuff is already out there.
I also hope that this will be on iTunes because the elephant in the room is that this is yet another cash-in compilation about ten minutes since the last one. Perhaps this is how it will always be now; the final recordings drip-fed through an eternal collection of compilations, each one remastering the fuck out of the tracks until they end up an ear shattering wall of noise.
They will sound just fine, 'Singles' is acknowledged to be the very worst it'll get, and the benchmark on how-not-to-do-it.

... Sound aside, ethics aside, lack of Murder aside... Singles is probably the closest-to-definitive singles compilation around. Remember 'International'? Or 'Retro', a 4-CD comp including World not Thieves Like Us? Jeez...
Does make a nice one disc "hits" set for the uninitiated.
From an aesthetic standpoint don't really like throwing album track "isolation" in there. The well known "Dead Souls" would be a popular fit. Why not "Digital"?... it's gotten better known over time.
No "Everything's Gone Green" makes me sad.
Not a "Fine Time" hater but "Run" would be great instead.
The name "Hellbent" makes me think it might be another lame attempt to rock out as old men.
I guess as a concept it was always going to happen. We'll surely get a New Order: The Factory Years compilation (featuring a previously unreleased track) one day shortly followed by a New Order: Not The Factory Years (featuring a previously unreleased track).
Then it'll be New Order:The Complete Career Years (featuring a previously unreleased track).
Me, Im looking forward to New Order:Nice Tracks To Listen To On A Weekend (featuring previously uneleased tracks) and New Order:Some Songs That Start With The Letter T (featuring a previously unreleased track that starts with the letter T).

Maybe somebody would buy this for the soccer anthem and enjoy the rest (very doubtful).
Really, the only market anymore is the simple digital download release or the special high priced vinyl reissue.
who would want this CD?????? apart from Hellbent of course which will keep the forum busy until release ![]()

"New Order: Music for Bank Managers and Other People Getting On In Years" would surely be the most accurate title...

(Maybe consider expanding 'Hey!' with a simple 'now watcha doin?')
This compilation genuinely could have worked for me if it was a 2 disc set with a thoughtful run through of JD and NO. But I suppose this compi was inevitable.
The cover looks nice enough, reminds me of the Run2 sleeve. But the 'OT' of 'total' makes me think of the other two TBH

People are going to think these are the real lyrics.
Oh ffs, what a lazy way to shift units.
Tacking one new track on a compilation of songs we already all have 10 times over. Substance 1987, (the best of) NewOrder, Heart and Soul, International, Retro and Singles are still very much available in your average high street HMV so - and I hate to be blunt but - what's the fucking point?
Once again zero respect for the fans, zero thought put into making a decent and quality product fans would actually love to own. Just Regret and Crystal for the four zillionth time and Morley (probably) jacking off in the liner notes.
It's like they're having a competition with Morrissey to see who can release the most pointless Best Of CD. (New Order were in the lead but Moz has started winning lately with his recent one)
I know money makes the world go round and artists are entitled to produce Best Ofs for new fans but the barrel has been scraped so much with New Order it's fucking disintegrated.
Disappointing.
Hellbent on getting every last cent out of a glorious legacy.
too much time working overtime,,,not

johnny james wrote: ....and exactly what release(s) would you like to see?
Well, an album of unreleased music/demos/etc in some format - basically all of the stuff that they left off the remasters would be nice. The odd live album wouldn't also go amiss...
I'm still waiting for True Dub to be released on CD! :p
Of course, the above will probably never happen, but you can always dream!
But, overall, for the first time in a long time, there's an actual New Order (not Joy Division!) track being released that I haven't heard...

Not another half-baked Best Of that's for sure.
To answer your question, I would personally like to see:
- The Sirens' leftovers properly mastered, mixed and released as a CD EP,
- A series of live albums along the same lines as JD's Preston / Les Baines series,
- Brand new remixes on along the same lines as what Depeche Mode have been doing,
- A compilation of truly rare, previously vinyl only remixes.
I don't see a single reason why any of those are beyond the realms of possibility. Maybe even set up a mailing list and produce the CDs in limited quantities for fans who sign up.
Adding one "new" track onto a CD of numerous other tracks we own already and then making us buy them all over again to own the "single" track is the laziest and most boring possible way of getting out new material.
They really reward us as fans, don't they?

I'm curious, as every release is greeted with negativity, about exactly what the fans would genuinely want to see released. I think I know the answer but it's good to have it aired...
Really?
That the best retort you've got?
How's about whatever tracks left over from the Siren's sessions?
In whatever state they're in.
For the same price as this nonsense "re-hash collection"+1.
And The Happy One.
Wow, another half arsed best of album ![]()
Do the members of New Order no longer care what they put out? They should get a new management team who can control what gets released. Since WFTSC in 2005 its been shocking/embarrassing the shite they have released.
:(
johnny james wrote: I'm curious, as every release is greeted with negativity, about exactly what the fans would genuinely want to see released. I think I know the answer but it's good to have it aired...
I for one would like a box set of true rarities/unreleased tracks/unreleased versions of tracks. The fifth disc of "Retro" that was put together for the fans is a good example of this.
I think most of the fans would be appreciative of releases that showed some thought, research, and effort. I understand that from a sales point of view the record label wants another "best of" every five years or whenever there's renewed interest in the band, but if we could get some fan-oriented releases in-between those "best ofs" that would be great!
When Peter and Stephen went back and corrected the two CD Factory remasters I thought that was fantastic and bought the entire lot of them for about $130 in one pop. I think there's a lot of fans out there willing to spend some serious cash if they felt that either the band or somebody close to the band was really going to mine the NO archive and release the results properly mastered. Just my two cents.
We have to pay for a whole album to get one new track left over from an album session.
Boooo!
The problem will be solved if the tracks are going to be available to buy individually though.
Yay?
then record labels complain about piracy. once the compilation is released what do they think will be the first song leaked? the music business as we knew it is dead mostly because of this lack of respect for the costumer. even the hardcore fans don't buy music nowadays. they deserve better.
Rorschach wrote: How's about whatever tracks left over from the Siren's sessions?

This has been done here quite a lot before, hasn't it?
If you were the artist and had written a song, but you didn't consider it was finished, then why on earth would you consider releasing it?
Same goes for demos. They're interesting to the hardcore fan but, again, if you're the artist and you've written a rough version of something, then you spend some more time on it and end up with a finished product that you're actually rather proud of then why (oh why oh why oh why!) would you then turn around and release the first cut you'd produced of said track, one you presumably thought needed more work?
Same with the live stuff. If Bernard is the 'perfectionist' we've been led to believe, then why on earth should we expect to see many more live recordings released? They're probably not versions that Bernard, himself, is likely to be entirely happy about. I remember having a conversation with James Nice a good five years ago, if not more, about how LTM were hoping to release a live New Order CD (which would've been a perfect vehicle for LTM) from one of the US '89 gigs and were waiting on final confirmation from Bernard on whether it could get the go ahead ... I can only assume he vetoed the release cos it's never appeared.
Anyway, even if the band were to release a couple of dodgy demos, a few live boots (which are available everywhere anyway) and some unfinished tracks from Sirens then what's the commercial value of any of these? You'd sell a few 100, tops. I just don't see a market for it, outside of a hardcore of fans.
Just my two'penneth.
You all know this subject will be covered again in 2014.
And again, in 2018.
And so on, and so forth.
My comment was meant to be as ridiculous as the notion of yet another bleeding compilation being supposedly validated by a single new track.
Your points are, of course, spot on Jarvo.
Unfortunately, I agree with the sceptics here. This loos just like the 2006 Depeche Mode best-of, with tracks everyone has got, except one.
I believe I read somewhere that New Order had about seven spare songs that they saved from the Waiting For The Sirens' Call album. Am I right?
What I'd like to hear is another remix project, only this time on CD and with a little more imagination taken into account by the producers/remixers.

In a naval setting?
Empress Touch wrote: I believe I read somewhere that New Order had about seven spare songs that they saved from the Waiting For The Sirens' Call album. Am I right?
To a degree, yes.
The songs are, according to Steve in a recent interview "in various states of assembly." That is, not finished or ready for release without more work. Which won't happen while relations with Hooky are 'not good.'
And so it goes.
Can we get back to being psyched about a new NO tune coming out?
This will make my summer, unless of course it's the name they've given to an instrumental version of 'I told you so'
Shakin' Baker wrote: Can we get back to being psyched about a new NO tune coming out?
Not to £9.99 we can't. We couldn't manage it to a 13 track Freebass album either.
It's something to put on iTunes. If you don't want to buy the whole thing, steal it. Maybe it will be on the next re-issue anyway.

I wouldn't be too sure concerning this. Most likely this is a song which was mostly finished in 2005 and Bernard or Steve put the finishing touches to it with the permission of the other two, a little bit like "Let's go" in 1994. I can't see them sitting together in a studio and actually working on tracks again. Hopefully the rest of the WFTSC left-overs could also be completed this way.

The Sirens stuff, surely! I agree with everything Mr 328 says, especially the bit about Morley jacking off. He's been sustaining it for 30 years, makes Berlusconi look impotent. If there are 7 Sirens out-takes and this is indeed one of 'em, does that mean they're gonna come out on a pointles rerererererererehash apiece? Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Plus it's weird when a 'best of' compilation includes one exclusive track, I wonder why...
Yeah, it's yet another mickey mouse compilation.
Yeah, it'll probably have audio issues.
BUT (looking at it in a "glass half FULL" kinda way)..... it's a new N.O. track!!!!! The first "new" track we'll have heard in years.... I don't even care if it's rubbish - I can't wait to hear it..... it could be another 5 or 6 years before we get another one.
Am I the only one excited about hearing it?
Plus, hopefully we'll be able to buy the track as a standalone on itunes, rather than have to buy the whole album (fingers crossed).

I have no intention of buying this and jamming it in between International and Singles so if it isnt on itunes I will download it illegally.

I want to to echo your sentiments but I can't. The glass is neither half full nor half empty.
The glass is too big.
With a title like "Hellbent", odds are it's a Control OST outtake that lacked the toe-tapping qualities of the other three tracks.
Andy wrote: With a title like "Hellbent", odds are it's a Control OST outtake that lacked the toe-tapping qualities of the other three tracks.
Dry.
It's actually an unreleased Happy Mondays collaboration from back in 1988 (similar to A Certain Ratio's Good Together which as everyone knows featured Barney and Shaun Ryder on guest vocals).
FACT.

johnny james wrote: Would you really like to have a remix project? Presumably of New Order, not Joy Division?
Absolutely not!!! Remix albums are a cop-out, especially when there's things that haven't been issued on CD and unreleased things in the vault. I can't be bothered by some unknown DJ's "take" on a New Order song, espcially these days when remixes usually have nothing to do with the original track.
I think this compilation is not meant for the die hard fans. It's 'just' for newcomers to be introduced to the music. However; for these newcomers it's missing key tracks like Confusion, 1963 and Round & Round. But this will, ofcourse, always be debated.
Soundwise, I fear that this one will be no better than let's say International or (dare I say it) ... Singles. For example, I bet the dropouts in True Faith will still be there.

Nope, it's the 7" edit for a change, freshly sourced from the master.

A perusal of the PRS database against both Hook and Sumner as writers brings up no matches, unless it is titled something else.

It'll be shit. You know it will. Much as I'd love it to be a latter-day gem like Turn, it won't be. Shite lyrics, no vocal melody, paper thin vocals, that same drum beat that's on most of WFTSC and a meandering bass lead that is Hooky on autopilot.
I hope I'm wrong, though init

Since it's a best-of compilation, it's really odd for them to spare a space for an unreleased song... However thay may be the very salvation for the track. And being in a collection of greatest tunes, the new track should be on par with them. Logical?

Which could be seen as a positive. Someone somewhere clearly thinks a quick blast of it will tempt people into making a purchase rather than it putting them off.

What do we want instead of another greatest hits?
Republic, Get Ready, WFTSC double-disc-reissues? A "new" album of the unfinished songs and late-period non-LP tracks? Academy, Pumped Full Of Drugs, and Montreux 1993 on DVD? The yanked, but finished, archival live albums? A new remix project?
Nah, greatest hits of 18 songs you've already heard... and one you haven't.

Hmmm. Tempo a bit sluggish. Some tasty licks from, probably, Phil. Would have fitted better on Get Ready (and, indeed, Twisted Tenderness) than on WFTSC.
5 or 6/10.
Don’t want to be Captain Killjoy, but that is an adequate late-Order B-side at best.
If it had been on, say, the "Jetstream"-single I would have liked it OK...but it's not a case of "why the fuck didn't they put this on the album?".
Gonna pass on Total although I will certainly pay for this track - if it’s available separately.

Best thing New Order have done in years. Love it. Better than 70% of the stuff on WFTSC (IMO).
It will be a huge summer hit. Fans and promoters will be queuing up to get a New Order tour underway. Followed by a return to the studio for the band, resulting in a brand new album "Hey Now What You Waiting For?"

You are funny, but you are right this guy took too much time to do this, he must be a die hard NO fan and I thought I was.
there's a difference between being a die hard fan and doing that! that's just moronic. we're talking 3bass moronic here. MANI IS THAT YOU.

I like it. I think its a really great NO track, irrespective of how it came to be on this compy. Its nice and uplifting, classic London-era New Order.
However, you've more chance of getting a wank off the pope than me shelling out for the album. Their last chance is to put it on iTunes or else I'll rob it from somewhere, I cant say fairer than that.
i'm gonna buy the cd to see if those gobshites at london have fixed the problems that were on singles. after the +- disaster i am surprised they have even shown their faces with a new product!
almansoglasnost wrote: sounds a little like player in the league, doesn't it? it's clearly b-side material imho
Speaking of leagues,it is more Championship or League one than Premier league sadly.

anyways, its not bad a song.. back in the old days i did a lot more analysis than this..

my two cents is that this is actually quite a decent track. it's not gonna change any lives but w/e. its summery, it's new order. i could go into length as to why it's not as good as X,Y,Z but whats the point. it is what it is. it's new, now we've heard it. yay !

I agree with you, I kind of like that song also.
Was REALLY looking forward to hearing Hellbent.....
Just heard it.... hmmmmmm .......not actually bad....... ummmmm...... not actually good either..... ermmmmmmmm...... bit of a b-side innit?...... oh, for fecks sake fellas, just get back together and produce some kick ass punky tracks like yer did when you first got together as Warsaw..... just coz you're middle aged, doesn't mean ya have to be middle-of the-road.
I LOVE New Order more than is reasonable for a normal person - I cannot stress this enough..... they are fantastic (but not above occasional criticism). Whilst some of their London-era stuff has been good, too much of it has been mid-tempo, middle of the road stuff that Cameron and Clegg probably click their fingers to and think "hey this is cool and edgy... just like Coldplay".
I still love 'em enough to believe one day they might put out something worthwhile again (or at least give us another decent live show before one of them kicks the bucket!).
EDIT: Just been watchin' the vid for Hooky, Rowetta and The Light's cover of Atmosphere..... pisses all over hellbent...... this Atmosphere cover would make a fab xmas number 1....... the campaign starts here!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiG1cUVVLGg

But it is I who am A, B and C, I carry no card, my life is cheap!
It's better than half the songs on WFTSC (jetstream, dracula, TYS), but not as good as the other half. Would have been an average song in this average album (or in the previous one - sounds a little bit like Brutal or PITL, btw).
Still, I'm happy to hear it and am quite enjoying it, but within a few days it will be forgotten.
I like it a good bit, but by no means loved it. Would have been good on Get Ready as a deep album cut, could've replaced Slow Jam, though I love the In Sessions version of that one. Couldn't agree more with the last post, very much thought of Brutal on first listen. Didn't think the lyrics were all crap. Typical late-era Sumner, quite liked the refrain.
Overall, 6/10 or better than average.
Too bad the NO 'tab community' is so weak, I love the song's bass, but I can't learn it by ear yet.
Sounds like a Get Ready leftover, sort of a Happy Mondays vibe attempt. Produced by Steve Osbourne?
Suppose better than nothing. Hardly single material. Was hoping for one of the supposed single quality lost WFTSC 2 tracks.

Depends, really. It’s better than, say, ”Dynamo”. But then so is a shit on a stick. If I compare it to BL’s ‘outtakes’, it’s about as good as “How Long” but nowhere near as good as “Higher Wider Deeper”.
As much as Barney's lyrics have become similar ('what you doing..' etc...) I'd still rather listen to my BL album than this, thank you very much. ![]()

An instrumental would be nice. The musics quite nice. Love that slow walking bassline at the start and some of the synthy bits are classic NO. Nice echoes of Brutal in there somewhere. I'm with Fiddy about that whatchadooin lyric too.
Sounds like a demo that someone's twiddled with.
3/10. See me ![]()
Do we know where this dates from yet? If it's one of the much-trumpeted WFTSC offcuts, and presumably the highlight at that, then I've suddenly lost my enthusiasm

Right. If I found a place for "Hellbent" among a list of all 15 BL songs, from best to worst, it would end up in the bottom half. Compared with the GR-era tracks, and even the WFTSC-era tracks we've heard, it's in the relegation zone.
I'm one of the number who finds "Hellbent" very reminiscent of "Sabotage" and "Brutal", and a little bit of "PITL" - but I don't like it as much as any of those.
And to think that some folk clamour for unreleased stuff and demos.
There's a reason this sort of stuff stays away in vaults never to see the light of day.
I'm not saying it's awful, it's just a bit insipid and one-dimensional. I listened to it once, found it quite easy on the ears, but decided I couldn't be arsed to listen to it all the way through again. I know a lot of New Order output doesn't initially grab you and needs further attention to detail, but this one frankly washed right by me.
Do wish people wouldn't compare this to Brutal though. I thought that was a lovely track.
i do have to say, some people on here are a bit poisonous. its silly to think a band would want to write the same stuff again and again. it's in the style of new order and it's fresh sounding. i'd rather this than nothing. pretty much sums it up.
Sounds more like Brutal to me, especially when they did it live. On the plus side, it's got all the usual hallmarks (wanksome lyrics, crisp bass, crashing guitars, Steve's platter, synth stabs), just a shame there's YET ANOTHER 'watcha doing' and an overall lack of umph. Trundles along quite nicely without actually climaxing.
Hi, havent posted for a long long while.

Not sure where I saw it meantioned but there was more tracks from the Get Ready sessions than saw the light of day. My guess this is one of those while they're keeping the sirens tracks (Sugar Cane etc) for a later release?

Agreed. Brutal is underrated..... sounds better when performed live though (bit punkier, bit more edge - see the Finsbury Park footage).
Second To None wrote: Not sure where I saw it meantioned but there was more tracks from the Get Ready sessions than saw the light of day. My guess this is one of those while they're keeping the sirens tracks (Sugar Cane etc) for a later release?
Agreed, it sounds very much from that era (Sabatage, Player In The League). I wouldnt be surprised if it was indeed from the Get ready sessions.
Am I the only one who thinks that song is good, I know it is not a classic but it is still good, people on this site are very judgmental about everything, everything can’t be gold, look at U2 and Depeche Mode their last albums weren’t the best but they were still decent, I think lately anything that NO does and their side project has been criticized too much here, after reading all of this stuff it makes me think of not liking their music also which is not a good thing at all.
I like Hellbent a lot more than Pictures in my mind, which I had close out halfway through from boredom. I enjoy that Get Ready sound the track has, it would've made a great maxi single at some point, but to each their own!
linus sulanki wrote: after reading all of this stuff it makes me think of not liking their music also.
It seems like alot of contributors also dont like their music, certainly all the albums released since the nineties began. The three London albums are often held up as examples of crap-ness and I've never understood why. Theres nothing wrong with that, its an opinion like any other but, fuck me, thats a long time not liking New Orders music.

Hi Ju
Remember our good talkings with Maya. Think she had a baby recently.
In my opinion every new order album has at least one song that is genius and one that is unlistenable shite
Think it was also recorded for The Beach soundtrack but Brutal was the chosen one. Just a moment of inspiration ![]()
I actually loved Get Ready. Absolutely loved it. Found Sirens harder to love but it had two stellar tracks on and a few god ones nevertheless. Also really liked the BL Paris show. Just find compilation's compilation's compilation unnecesarry and this track bland. Will give my opinion what I've heard of The Light on the corresponding thread.

I don't do tabs, but I'll try to do a vid to show it, the main low bass is very similar to crystal, not much lead bass.
The track sounds a bit like a bad lou track with a little bit of hooky on it, not bad musically, but lazy lyrics and auto tune on the vocal, better than nothing, but could be better, sounds like they're not really bothered.

That would be even better. :D I've seen your videos, they're great, in fact.
for a date -- it may not be trustworthy, but one of the blogs I read said it was a 2005 outtake from the WFTSC sessions. Doesn't sound it, but that's what one source said.
It's neither good, nor bad, but a thoroughly normal, average late period NO track that would do well as a bside, or a mid-LP track. I have missed the interplay of drums, bass, and synths, its good to hear it again.
Thanks for posting the link, like all first hear new order stuff its familiar immediatly, liked it enough to play twice, got a little air of menace in there, though sounds like a rip from are friends electric.
its been a long time since the last time.
It's definitely a grower. Listened to it 3/4 times now and beginning to like it a lot. It's a windows down summer track. Is it Vintage NO? Probably not. However it is NO and for that I am chuffed. Here is a summer tune to hum along to that's better than 99% stuff released this year

Unfortunately this track is yet another ostinato chord-phrase song that won't win the band many new fans, or airplay, except alternative radio stations. Pity, because it could have been brilliant if the gang had really pushed themselves to the limit...
Love the track. Bit unsure at first but listened to it about 10 times now. It does sound like a Get Ready era track.
I,ve seen Rhino are doing a special edition of Total for £20! Bit steep for one track we haven't got and a t shirt. But the t shirt does look nice!

Why do people make such a big deal about another compilation album? According to my calculations, Elvis and the Beatles have 4 freaking thousand compilations. It's just something record companies do, every few years they round up the greatest hits and put them out there again. Every major artist you can think of has those cheap looking '20th century masters' comps with horrible sleeve and a boring photo of the band littering up cd racks.
Nobody says you have to buy it.
Oh god, that is so nondescript. NO are just treading wafer thin water..... to think you have to shell out for the compilation just to hear............

Interesting.
Why should we settle for mediocrity? Why should we like boring?
That's why I like NewOrder. Because they are not boring, or mediocre overall. Some of their songs are the finest sounds I have ever ever heard. I liked NewOrder and travelled all over Europe because they were so good. Not because they were mediocre, or boring. I wouldn't spent so much time, or money, or miles, or have so many of their records if they were dull.
If this song were their best thing ever, I'd never cross the road to see them or buy their music. NewOrder were capable - even to the end - of so much better than this. NewOrder don't get a freepass that everything they do is godlike genius. I go into every new NewOrder song hoping it will be another classic : often to be disappointed. "Hellbent" is a thoroughly average song by a band that's bored of itself. We're not Haters : they set the bar so high than even "quite good" is a long way to fall, and ultimately boring and mediocre compared to their highest points. This song? Better than "MTO", not as good as almost everything else.
I wouldn't spent so much time, or money, or miles, or have so many of their records if they were dull.
Just listended to it. Will get back to it but it sounds to me like an average 'Siren's' track. The intro is VERY promising but it evolves in a good BL song (minus the bass of course).
After a few listens it's grown on me, very slightly.
The layering is good and it gets better as it goes along.
Would have been a suitable b-side ...

C'mon, everyone is entitled to an opinion! I think most people agree that the London era songs are a mixed bag of good and not-so-good (at least compared to the earlier work, if not in their own right).
Everyone is on here coz they LIKE New Order... i don't think anyone here has ever said "how crap everything that the band ever does is".

Hellbent is competent, unremarkable record. You certainly wouldn't buy another unnecessary compilation to obtain it , but to those that do, bless you.
As posted on here earlier, there is a certain amount a treading water going on here, and this could of easily been an out take of say Brotherhood, but that was 25 years ago. Obviously this is London Records trying to obtain the cash that New Order didn't deliver in the way they wanted.
On Factory, New Order were a contemporary band. On London, they were not. Hellbent doesn't change a thing.

Brotherhood out take? I cant hear it myself. Apart from BLT all the tracks from that album where loud bass, loud guitars, not much pop synths, badly recorded vocals and not very polished production.

I don't think that people necessarily dislike the music per se, it's just in the last 15 years the ratio of wank to wow has been a constant disappointment (not totally convinced that makes total sense, but you get the idea)... In my opinion, there has been some great stuff from the London era, some mediocre tracks and one or two piles of utter shite... Others will feel that the mediocre/crap dominates... What many people will agree on, is that for a band who have been so innovative, so jaw-droppingly amazing (at times) in the past (yet capable of being abysmal in the next breath), the returns have (understandably, I suppose) diminished over the years... But we still live in hope (presumably because we know that never being the most commercially minded), that there may well be something worth hearing languishing in the archives...
For me, that hope, that chance, however faint, is what keeps me coming back to the band and here...
So I don't particularly care for Hellbent, other people may well do, and I'm glad there are, just as I am that people like The Light, even though neither really do anything for me... I'll happily talk about what a great track Krafty is, if it'd help... ![]()
So, anyway I suppose what I'm trying to say is I think it's disappointment rather than disliking that leads to some of the comments here...

So, anyway I suppose what I'm trying to say is I think it's disappointment rather than disliking that leads to some of the comments here...

You have my sympathies:) Listening to it for the second time I like the chorus but the chords in the verses sound over familiar but overall if it had been on Get Ready instead of Slow Jam it would have fitted in well, sounds like it came from the same sessions as Brutal alright which would mean it was recorded in 1999-2000? when they were still feeling their way back into things. As for moaning about New Order, well it's theraputic I guess. New Order have been always known for their honesty, maybe it's a Manchester thing,I wouldn't know,I've never been there.

Ssshhh,Don't tell anyone. (I didn't think so as it is being commercially released.)
Warners obviously don't pay any attention to the fans so I doubt they'd notice!
This is why recycle is such a good idea. Why would a band even need a record label these days when you can do recycle instead. LOVE it. Out of interest does anyone know how recycle pay the group ??? I want to suggest doing it to my other favorite band!

ok so why is it so adored here !?
i've gone very cold turkey on it very suddenly. i thought it was an official process.
just seems a bit pointless and dare i say arrogant now!
Surprised how many people thought it was a Get Ready or Brutal outtake. To me it sounds like a definite leftover from Sirens' Call. For a start I don't think New Order's songs featured squealing guitar riffs a'la Phil C's effort on Hellbent until he started writing with them post-Get Ready. Hey Now What You Doing being a good example. Besides the keyboard and drum sections sound far more contemporary and poppier than much of GR. Anyway, I think it's been confirmed now that this track originates from 2005? I read something on Facebook to that effect anyway...
As for the song itself, it also sounded a bit derivative to me on the first few listens but after a few more on proper headphones I'm liking it a lot really. It beats the shit out of Krafty and a few other lacklustre songs on WFTSC. All the key ingredients of the band are there, even Phil. It's by no means earth-shattering but for a session outtake pieced together while the band are estranged it sounds pretty decent really. My only criticism is the production sounds a bit slick when they could have left a few rough edges in there. "B" grade overall.
Never mind another pointless Best Of, if the rest of the Sirens' outtakes are anything like Hellbent the band should just hand the material over to a trusted team of engineers and techs to let them piece the final bits together with each band member chipping in remotely where required. That's probably how the finished version of Hellbent came into existence. Then add the finished songs to a CD2 of a "deluxe" WFTSC reissue and I think most fans wouldn't mind shelling out again so long as there were 4-5 brand new songs to enjoy.
They'll never do it of course.

You really thought the band were giving away huge swathes of their back catalogue for free? I mean, seriously? 30 odd singles for free? I know some bands have occasionally given away the odd track or album as part of a larger publicity offensive or "please sign up to this mailing list" but Recycle was definitely not created by the band. Nor has it been officially endorsed by the band in any shape or form. At least not publicly that we know of.
It's one massive free bootleg basically. A damn good one it has to be said.
I lost any sympathy I had for the band losing money on it when they kept peddling the same tired Best Ofs to us for years and years. Even the Factory album reissues which turned out to be dismally defective wholly justified what the people behind Recycle did so hardly "pointless". I shelled out 75 quid on all of the Factory album remasters in good faith but was rewarded with audible glitch after audible glitch. On top of that Rhino did not respond to my request for replacements so I think a large chunk of fans downloaded Recycle in its entirety with zero guilt. It was such a relief at least someone knew what they were doing even if they weren't officially attached to the band.
On paper the blog is probably not legal yes but something like it was only inevitable after years of bollocks from "official" outlets. At least it was clearly put together with an eye for detail that would put most record label employess to shame.
The irony lost on them is that most fans would gladly have dipped their hands in their pocket for an official version of Recycle in the early 2000s... which I believe was the brainchild of the the late Rob Gretton. Most fans would have paid a generous sum too.
Hellbent is No. 13 on this week's Sirius XMU Download 15 so it is getting some airtime on Sirius. Heard it this morning at about 8:15am. Nice to hear it on the radio.
Just to throw this out there...
Any way this could be a hybrid track? An older track finished by Bad Lt.? Similar to "Let's Go" for the Best of? collection.
Hellbent is all over the place.

Hope that's not a stupidly expensive ltd ed ep, just a normal CD or download, I'd love a decent recording of the happy one.
If its getting radio play why not release Hellbent as a single? Oh yeah... no one would buy Total then...
it is a great new order song, 2005, with brilliant arrangement, lyrics, vocals. it is timeless, as usual . never ever underestimate the magnificent value of each song with this band's name on it. there are more songs . maybe as many as 7. there are many recent excellent indie groups 2000- 2011 , but new order is always better, no matter what the competition creates. this is the top band worldwide for all time.

OK, I'll bite. In what way is it ambitious?
Ambitious of the record company to add it to a Best Of?
:\pimp3:
Listened to it again and again - I really like it. It's catchy, unlike the other half of WFTSC.
I don't understand what everyone's bitching about, I like the track fine - not their most memorable work, but there are a fair number of tracks I like less. The "watcha doin" made me cringe, but it gradually picks up, and the instrumental climax is very nice, a classic Order touch we haven't gotten enough of for some time. And for the record, I thought Sabotage, PitL, etc, were good tracks, B-sides though they might be. Better than Slow Jam or Rock the Shack, certainly.
No chance I'll buy the annual singles collection; I'll *gladly* pay for Recycle when the label twats actually put out something that good. Until then I feel no guilt.
Would like to hear the remaining Siren sessions tracks. Would like to hear some official live albums; it's a shame Barney's such a tight-fisted perfectionist (apparently). Wouldn't mind more along the lines of Retro Disc 5 - but as was discussed back then, there may not *be* that many "unreleased tracks" that are even worth hearing (especially if they get the reception Hellbent has gotten here). Remixes I have little or no use for.

Looks like I'm last to know. I've just been watching this morning's Soccer AM. I raced on here because I thought they were getting the band back together, on a mission from god. Alas. Nevermind, at least we got a b-side.

Maybe I am living in the past a tad, but I reminisce of these
I wasn't signed up at the time but I remember the period very well, I also remember how at the time everyone was complaining about the state of the UK charts and how New Order had to compete with dross like Five and S Club 7.
Little wonder did we know back then things would get a hell of a lot worse ten years later.
If New Order got into the singles chart today, it would be a ray of sunshine on a field of soggy manure.
It wouldn't have mattered if it really had been an all-time classic, it probably still would've been panned by most on here. Unfortunately, that's just the "disappointment" mentality surrounding the band these days which has been compounded for years firstly by how they messily imploded in 2006 then again (and again) with the defective re-releases the label has been plying us with ever since. Some fans also can't forgive them for leaving behind the "classic sound" so anything post-Factory NO do will always be shite to them. I don't personally get that mentality but each to their own.
There hasn't been a lot to get excited about as a New Order fan for quite some time. So when something new comes along it is probably held up to impossibly high standards. Unfairly so in my opinion as I like the track a lot for what it is.
I probably would have sent it back to Barney to write a new intro lyric (no more "what cha doin" please) and exorcising that bit would probably raise it straight away in many people's opinions. It's got to be said the vocal towards the end after the final chorus is superb (stayed in our beds etc.) love that bit.
I'm glad they've released it though not happy with being force-fed another Best Of in order to own the track in full PCM quality. I guess it's a compromise this time but a lop-sided one.

Sister and Brother was played live by the Light 2-5-10. I think Hook did play a Sirens outtake when DJing, but I can't remember the name - something like When You're Away.

The different versions you are noticing are the original 7" edits some of which previously appeared on 2005's Singles albeit sonically brick-walled on that particular compilation.
Ceremony, Temptation, Thieves Like Us, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith and Fine Time are all the original UK 7" versions on Total. Perfect Kiss is the US/Qwest 7" Edit; a first for a New Order CD release (official anyway). On the JD side She's Lost Control appears to be the same 12" mix which featured on Substance 1977-1980. All the other JD tracks are the well worn versions we all know.
everyoneverywhere wrote: The mixing seems to be more subtle and less full-on with the older tracks. Perhaps Rhino have listened....
Indeed, it has to be said that the overall sound of Total is much, much closer to what Singles and the Factory album reissues should have sounded like in the first place. Hats off to Frank Arkwright and Stephen Morris, they really did sort it out this time. It's just a crying shame it took so many New Order CDs to get to this stage where the mastering is what it should be.
A boring compilation for the hardcore but for new fans it's not a bad introduction really.

Good track listing, but can't say I really enjoy Hellbent. Previewed it on Facebook when it made it's debut and what started off as a really good track had me shaking my head once Barney started singing "Yeah... yeah... yeah..." in the background. That moment of cheese killed it for me.
Should have mentioned I bought TWO copies of Total today ![]()
No, I'm not mad, one was a birthday present for a friend. Nothing wrong with a bit of conversion tactics ![]()
I obtained a CD-R copy of a promotional CD "by other means" last week but I had already ordered and paid for the CD/T-shirt bundle Rhino were offering online two to three weeks ago. I'm still waiting for my proper copy to arrive. I refuse to pay £30-40 on Ebay thus far for a promo CD, those sellers can fuck right off to be honest. Zero difference to the final release either.
Must admit for the price we paid for the bundle (£20) Rhino really should have had them in the post last Thursday/Friday so they arrived on the day of release rather than us waiting around wondering which day it'll come. I had nothing in my post box this morning and I'm central London so hardly rural.
A small point but I'm just glad they got the mastering right this time.

Yes, they know about Recycle - at least one of the band members was given all 20 of the singles in lossless format. Their manager intervened with Warners because he wanted us to finish the project so he personally could have a complete set. The've given their silent consent by not having it taken down. That may change at some point, but as the site has been active for 2 years, I doubt it.

i do agree. £20 for an official t-shirt and an brand new album is a lot of money. it should have been like £11 maximum.
I have bought the Total CD, not too bad a price for a t -shit and CD with unheard track. How much would we have padi if this was only a limited release like the recent record day Ceremony / In a lonely place. Warners messed up my order as per usualy although they are sorting it out.

I will also add to this and state that the intro for Blue Monday has the beginning kick drums fully intact (as it appears on Substance), plus the panning issue that usually occurs at 2:25 is fixed.
Ceremony and Temptation have zero hiss and also sound much better than what appeared on both Singles and the remasters.
Sounds like an outtake from GetReady, or a Bside from that time that didn't quite make it.
Many echos of Brutal in it as well; maybe it was pre-GetReady even.
Thinking about it, there were some great BSides around the time of GetReady, wonder if there are any hidden gems we've not yet heard?

As Nick points out I only had a CD-R copy (no sleeve) so was only posting version information as heard for those who don't yet own 'Total' and might be wondering what's on it. From a Discogs geek point of view the rare Perfect Kiss and True Faith 7" edits are the only "new" things here. Hardly worth 9 quid but there you go, still nice to have after all this time I suppose.

Correct a mundo Nickos... i luckily managed to pk up (for £15)a promo copy from a rec. shop in Toon last Sat (while wasting time b4 the Coral gig). Hellbent is a grower like...
Yup, likewise - managed to grab the promo for a tenner, and yup, Hellbent is actually growing on me. I'd have like there to be more of Hooky's bass, however... :)
The Rhino CD/t-shirt package arrived this morning - from Germany - I'm glad that they send these things quickly...
So quickly I got mine today.
I hope the t-shirt isn't a fake.![]()

Great minds hear alike.
And Morning Night & Day sounds like a Madge tune but I can't remember which?
Material Girl
Got my cd/t shirt yesterday, t shirt design is pretty nice but made of really thin shit material. as is the booklet in the cd case. But i can feel a wee phase of listening to New Order coming on in the next few days. Something i havent really done in a long time. P.S. Bill Turnbull or what ever he is called is an arse hole.
I got my shirt through, it's on a gildan heavy, pretty much the standard band t-shirt brand/weight. you're talking tosh! it's obviously not going to be (peter) saville row!
Finally got my CD. Enjoyed JD tracks, and Isolation, though out of logic here, feels right. Or maybe I was driving too fast on the highway.
Now when I got to Ceremony....
Why oh why, did they use this version? I know you lot cried about this obscure version but it was given a proper treatment on Singles, if anything can help that track. And then again on the 2008 reissues. The production is muddy, the rudemental echo sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records. I love the song, both in its live rendition and in the other studio version. You know, I don't care for the lyrics or melody at this point - that I've known long already, I just enjoy every second of the familiar sound - and the Joy Division/New Order sound was always polished, immaculate, impeccable in the studio. Here we get a demo-like version on a compilation CD for the masses. That also applies to Temptation to a lesser extent, for they didn't have a principally differently produced version to use; the 87 remake may be better but it would be out of context here.
I'll resume listening tomorrow when I'll get in the car: it'll start off Blue Monday! :)
I just bought the new track only at Amazon for 91 cents. I don't feel the need to buy another
compilation just for one track.
It's a nice song.
