Heard this yesterday and it did surprise me. I thought New Order didn't exist legally without any original member, but maybe because of Shamberg he's been forgiving.. :)
The good news is that they're playing gigs again, with Gillian. The band was never the same (especially live) after she left - it became a boy's club, much to the detriment of all.
I can live without Hook, though it would be much better if he was there. I can certainly also live without Phil Cunningham. I've never seen the point of this guy in any shape or form - to me he is not a New Order member and never will be. He added nothing to New Order. With Gillian back Phil becomes even more unnecessary than he was before.
Interesting times ahead!
Great news - and hopefully not the last of it.
Fantastic to have Gillian back. We're now back up to 3/4 of the proper Neworder.
Tom is an understandable fill for Hooky, who is happily pursuing other projects these days. And the rest of the band value Phil, so who am I to argue?
(Sad to hear about Michael Shamberg though.)

I think this is great that New Order is doing this, using this name, and all for a good cause for a friend. I think the line up is great too... Fantastic to have GG back, and rounding out the sound with Chapman and Phil, both talented players. Wish I could be there to see that.
As for Hook, I once enjoyed Hook's bass playing, but now I think it's not innovative at all, as it used to be. You can't go through life playing the same kind of thing, and expect to be on top or always be appreciated for it. Even fans on this forum are showcasing their own talent to play those same kind of basslines over other people's songs, so I don't think Hook is as necessary as the New Order purists may feel. Hook is a big personality on stage, but musically, that's it... He's somehow become just a personality in the later New Order gigs, armed with drumpads on the side. Good luck to him on continuing to tour the JD albums in the Fall; he's preoccupied already.
if anyone hasn't realized this, all this has happened before. Pink Floyd went through this, Fleetwood Mac went through this. And they were still Pink Floyd and the Mac. And they were still great.
I do think that Waiting for the Siren's Call (the song) and Crystal have great bass lines though.

Can't see much appetite for Hooky's touring act among promoters or fans after this announcement. Bit of a 'game changer' for him and not in a good way. It's easy to put bums on seats when there's no competition but now that it looks like a version of NO will be out and about again I can't see much interest in his proposed 'Movement', 'PCL' etc concept tours. I'd be a bit peeved if I was him but there ya go, Bernard et al are proving two can play that game as it were. You make your bed...
Not sure what i think about the whole NOv2 thing. I'll be there obviously (thanks to a complicated and expensive re-routing via Dublin) but a bit of me still thinks it should all just have been left as it was. Especially if it does turn into a 'Bucks Fizz' type debacle. How very un-New Order that would be.

Interesting point. I know the primary motivation is Shamberg (and yes, I'm sorry to hear that he's ill), but I wouldn't be surprised if undermining Hooky's road show was a small part of the calculation.

I know Hooky's not going to be there...just I hope there are no troubles with the rest of them playing these gigs.
There must have been some sort of legal development that led to this happening. I mean it's no secret that when Hooky left Bernard and Steve wanted to continue along with the NO name but were dissuaded by the threat of legal action. Perhaps they have suddenly found some loop hole that allows them to use the name?

Eurostar here we come. New Order have announced plans to play two benefit concerts for long time band associate Michael Shamberg this October in Paris and Brussels. The line-up will feature founder members of the band Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris and former keyboardist Gillian Gilbert who is married to drummer Morris. Former bass player Peter Hook, interviewed last week for Sabotage Times, will not be appearing and there’s no truth in the rumours the band are considering recruiting Rowetta on bass. Shamberg, who produced some of New order’s most stunning and genre defining videos including the Brit Award winning True Faith, Touched By The Hand of God and Regret has been extremely ill for some time. Gilbert said:
“It’s been a long ten years since I took a break from the band, so I’m really happy to be back, and this is a great place to start. Michael is a very good friend, and I want to help him, so it’s perfect timing to come back now!”
Vocalist Bernard explained the reason behind the concert as being something the band feel extremely strongly about:
“Michael has been with us from the very start, initially he was in charge of Factory New York, then became, creative producer for all our early videos. He brought our attention to the early works of Directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Gina Birch, Robert Breer, Peter Care, Phillipe Decouffle, Jonathan Demme, Robert Frank, Paula Greiff, Robert Longo, Bailie Walsh & William Wegman. Michael is very ill and needs constant medical attention. We want to help him, and these shows will contribute financial support towards his ongoing care.”
The dates, their first live shows since November 2006, are:
17th October 2011- Ancienne Belgique - Brussels
18th October 2011 – La Bataclan - Paris

That is a battle yet to be fought, both sides have been avoiding it so far. I expect this announcement will kick start potential action however.
The fact that they carried on as New Order after Gillian left could have set a precedent,but that was of course in different circumstances,is it a bit premature to be booking flights to Paris I wonder..
didn't Steve, Bernard and Hooky work as new order BEFORE Gillian?
