With Brotherhood back in the forefront of people's minds this week I wonder if it'll get a boost in this, the latest poll?

Nah, I like it but it's not better than Technique or PC&L. A solid 3rd place though.

Technickers.

As good as PCL & Low-Life are. Technique from start to end is just about as good as it gets.

PCL but only in the last year or so has it leapfrogged Lowlife in my affections... I also rate Republic a lot more than I used to, WFTSC less than when it came out and, yes, the Brotherhood documentary, has resulted in a more positive opinion of what used to be one of my least favourite NO moments...

Technique is a compact 37 minutes of quality tunes. no fillers, just 9 of the best. i adore the songs and production as much today as back in 1989. i will never tire of this music. Barneys best vocals, most emotive lyrics, solid production, great beats, rifts, rhythm and vibe.

Er, (the rest of)! :uhoh:

Nah, it's Technique for me as well. Easily their most consistently good album. There are individual tracks off all the others I love, in some cases three or four in a row but there's some really patchy stuff too. Technique is the only NO album which maintains the same level of quality all the way through.

Next in line would be Low-life.

While it's by no means my favourite, my opinion of Movement has gone up a bit during the past decade. 10 years ago I used to think it was uttershite but I quite like bits of it now. Unlike the majority on here I enjoy Hannett's claustrophobic production too.

Times change, things move on, Mike doesn't type New Order were only ever good live (which is a very valid point).

Brotherhood always edged it for me over Low Life.

Technique.

The Brotherhood songs came across better live than the vinyl. Never a fan of ELC and Way Of Life, it has to be said.

Low-Life being the close second.

The answer is 'PC&L'. You don't hear that playing on car stereos in episodes of 'Bergerac'.

I think this is what all the reviews said about technique when it came out, all the magazines gave it great reviews and it is truly a great album, not 1 bad song on the album.

At the time I am writing this Brotherhood is getting less love than Republic! The world has gone mad

Don't get me wrong, Republic has some good tracks, but the album as a whole? Meh.

Ok it maybe nearer the 39 min mark but it's certainly under 40 mins. My point being it doesn't outstay it's welcome and has no fillers. It's the only album (ever) that I can put back on as soon as it's finished.

Everyones got their own favourites. Thats justvhuman nature. Personally I'm not surprised as for me, brotherhood doesn't have much about it to love (except BLT). It's pretty bland and dull, boring guitar effects, bad production, awful vocals, uninspired.

Which republic is far from perfect it is sonically more pleasing to me, better produced and although a bit samey, I like it.

Just my thoughts. Everyones entitled to disagree.

Unsurprisingly it's Technique for me. Utterly flawless. I have to say that PC&L is a better sounding and classier album than Low-life but I probably prefer the songs on Low-life as a whole.

Technique for me too.

I think Hooky had a good point in the Brotherhood program, that Bernard was making tracks that were leaving little room for him to write his basslines too, which is probably what a lot of people dislike about republic, they were no longer writing as a band, barney would turn up with completed tracks, steve would replace the drums and hooky would try to come up with a bass line, if the arrangement is full already then that would be tricky.

republic for me has some great tracks on both sides, but technique just has more.

I remember the episode of bergerac where it was paying on the car stereo, bunch of yuppies in a convertable BMW if I recall correctly, which I probably don't :thumb:

I love Technique, but it's almost *too* good ... such a clean, well-manicured album. I adore each of the tracks individually but I find Low-Life and P-C-L are more interesting as albums. I believe their best work came during the 1982-85 era so no surprise really... but which one? Every time I think Low-Life, I wanna say P-C-L instead. I'll say Low-Life cos I've listened the shit out of it for the last 2 weeks!

Power corruption and lies was o n the turntable for ages when it came out , same with low life, still like waiting for the sirens call. though for me,its the unknown pleasures of Movement, nothing comes Closer.

Harsh review of Brotherhood I'd say. In my opinion it's got three all time classics on it (BLT, AIIWIW, and All Day Long). And yes I am an ELC fan. Plus there are only two actually bad tracks on it, Angel Dust and Paradise. Whereas Republic, erm well Spooky, Chemical, Times Change, Liar, and Young Offender are all utter SHITE! Other than that I agree with you about Technique, their peak never to be surpassed.

Own opinion and all that, but Paradise and Angel Dust: bad tracks? Also Spooky and Young Offender are shite? :wtf: they are brilliant... Actually Brotherhood is great. When you think about it it's Closer's little brother.... Acoustic tracks on side 1 and electronic on side 2. It was the first of their proper albums I purchased after Substance came out. I remember loving Paradise, BLT, Broken Promise and Angel Dust straight off.

I agree with the above apart from Brotherhood which I rate below the other 3. I first was given in 1987 a C90 cassette with PCL on one side and Lowlife on the other and listening to that cassette over and over again from start to finish I remember being amazed that each song was something special in itself,I also bought Technique in January '89 and it seemed to rain for the entire month as I was getting in to Technique.

Not sure what you think would be improved... modern guys try hard to imitate the old 80s synth sounds now:laugh:

Now are you thinking of "Round and Round" specifically? That sounded rather cliche even when it was released with the orchestral stabs and chimes. Not one of their cooler sounding singles, but it's still a good song.

Yes, among other things, also the synths in the chorus of Vanishing Point, which otherwise has the potential to be the finest song by anyone ever, probabyl other but I can't quote them at this late hour. I don't know how to put it really, they sound jangly, tinny as Monty Python would put it? Of course they're still good songs, that's the point, wouldn't care otherwise. Now modern guys, they're just shadows nowadays, aren't they?

What so Technique is an album for shirt lifters.... And why may that be?

Technique is my all time favourite album.

I've had it on in the car for a couple of weeks now & still don't skip any tracks.

I use the 12" of R&R and extended mix of Run2, then add all the instrumentals at the end (except THO, sadly) and it's the nearest thing to musical perfection I can find.

After that, it'd be PC&L; Low-life; Brotherhood; WFTSC; Republic; Get Ready; Movement

Fine Time and Mr. Disco definitely have that late 80s house feel to them, but I think the album has largely dated much better than a lot of their other 1980s material.

Technique PCL Low Life Brotherhood Republic Movement WFTSC Get Ready

I used to think Low Life was overrated. I kind of feel Bernard's voice is actually more consistent on PCL, and I feel the overall production on PCL is better. But, as an LP--A side/B side sequences, the strength of the songwriting, the playing of the band--Low Life is an impressive snapshot of a versatile and endlessly creative group.

Also, I thought WFTSC was a solid effort when it came out, but there's a denseness to it that's a bit tiring for the ear. Movement I never listen to anymore, but it gets points just for proving that they could still make an album after Ian's death. Plus the cover art is perfect. Get Ready sounds like a transitional record even though it's a reunion record. It's got some great songs, but it has an otherness to it that I can't quite put my finger on.

Well, the Factory years are out of contest. Each of those albums were milestones. But to be honest, my favourite one is Get Ready. This was the unexpected comeback, and it started with Crystal. A song that kicked in at the first listening. And the following song also rocked (the shack) :scream: WFTSC in contrast was such a dissapointment. Krafty was shite. And the rest was worse. Only exception is Draculas Castle, which is a good song but obviously has the worst song title in the history of pop music.

Brotherhood to me sounds largely like a bunch of half arsed demo recordings, and is poorly produced to boot. I've just never really taken to that album at all, I only really like Bizarre Love Triangle, All Day Long and Broken Promise. :( As for Movement, I actually really like the album, it's a bit doom and gloom a lot of the time but is one of New Order's more creative moments.

Actually I've just noticed that there is a quite clear electronic/dance over more guitar based divide in my selections there. Basically I must love New Order's dance orientated material a lot more than their guitar based stuff.

Technique! I've been listening to it in the car all week. Excellence.

It IS a summer album: ffs, it was recorded in the summer. And I heard for the first time in the summer, though I couldn't get it for a long time: it sounded something like the Pet Shop Boys or Erasure to me. I had only enjoyed Movement at that point.

I agree with Julijana that the arrangements are way dated, but the interesting thing is that when I heard it back '94, it sounded dated to me already back then. Those orchestral hits... The dance tracks existed in their own world that seemed to have nothing to do with then-current rhythm patterns, I mean it didn't sound like 1989 even! Were it released a little bit later in 1990 with a more updated rhythm, it would have blown the world away. Did anyone else feel the same way??

Lyrics and melody wise, it's top-notch though!

I actually listened to Brotherhood all the way through this week for this first time in years. With better/more polished production it wouldn't have been so bad really... still won't rate it above Low-Life or PCL though. :nonono: I prefer Sirens to Get Ready, although on it's first few listens I certainly didn't, it was a major disappointment I recall.

Wow, people got no love for Brotherhood. As It Is When It Was is one of my favorite NO songs. Nobody commented on Way of Life, a pretty fantastic bass song. For me there are only two duds in this album, quite possibly the last two songs.

WFTSC has Waiting For the Siren's Call, which is one of their best songs, it also had Guilt Is a Useless Emotion, which while not every NOOLer's favorite was a club and college radio hit in the US, as was Jetstream, and it has Turn, gorgeous song, and Whos Joe and Morning, Night, and Day, which are great tracks.

Crystal was mighty though, got a whole new generation into New Order. If they had toured the US properly for GR they would have made a lot of money. GR as an album though...it has Crystal, 60 MPH, Someone Like You, Vicious Streak, and Primitive Notion...the rest is crap.

Yes, you're completely right, they sound a lot as Joy Division on "Movement", but also a little bit on "1981-1982" ("Mesh", for example) and even "Power, Corruption and Lies" (what about "We All Stand"?). I think "Movement" is a transitional album because tracks like "Dreams Never End" and "Chosen Time" don't sound as JD's songs. The second one, for example, has a kind of "disco" drum riff, so sounds like a proto-classic New Order. To me, New Order was born "virtually" before "Movement", just pay attention on tracks like "As You Said", or "Isolation", because they sound pre-synthpop a lot.

(P.S.: Please forgive me for my primary english)

Good post, but Chosen Time's drum beat is almost identical to These Days by Joy Division!

Exactly! For this reason I think the first drafts of the classic New Order sound were made just before ... As Bernard Sumner told the press when "Total" was released people sometimes forget that the same guys who wrote "Blue Monday" also did "She's Lost Control". So I think it's hard to determine exactly where one ends and another one begins... musically, of course.

On that note, I was listening to 1981-82 Peel Sessions last night and was struck by how in some of the tracks you could have substituted Ian's voice for Bernard's and they would have sounded like new Joy Division tracks. The Peel sessions really draw that feel out of the instrumentation more than Movement does, imo, even with Hannett's production.

Seems like the overwhelming vote - almost 60% - unanimously go for Technique.
