Favourite New Order Studio Album?

Repeating myself over and over again...

"Movement". And I still don't get the hype about "Technique".

For the life of me i've never worked out why people think it's a summer album

I bought it on a cold, wet, rainy, miserable Monday in January 1989

Actually the only albums i've come away from totally mind blown after listening from start to finish are P,C&L , Low Life, Brotherhood, and Technique. Every other album has its moments but nothing like the listening experience of those albums.

I agree with the above apart from Brotherhood which I rate below the other 3. I first was given in 1987 a C90 cassette with PCL on one side and Lowlife on the other and listening to that cassette over and over again from start to finish I remember being amazed that each song was something special in itself,I also bought Technique in January '89 and it seemed to rain for the entire month as I was getting in to Technique.

Still no vote for Sirens

every album has its moments

and every album has songs you skip

Theres no bad ones, thats a fact. They really were a cracking beat-combo, the old New Order.

Much better than The Beatles. Silly mop-haired twonks.

Technique first then pc&l for me!

I never skip a track on Technique, it's perfection

My favorites in order:

Technique Low Life Power, Corruption, and Lies Waiting for the Siren's Call Republic Brotherhood Get Ready Movement

Am I the only one to think Technique hasn't aged well? Songwriting's still excellent, but the synth sound's really dated, difficult to listen to nowadays, one album that would be good to rerecord with uptodate equipment IMHO.

Five stars: Technique

Four stars: PC&L Low-life Get Ready WFTSC

Three stars: Republic

Two stars: Brotherhood Movement

Not sure what you think would be improved... modern guys try hard to imitate the old 80s synth sounds now

Now are you thinking of "Round and Round" specifically? That sounded rather cliche even when it was released with the orchestral stabs and chimes. Not one of their cooler sounding singles, but it's still a good song.

Yes, among other things, also the synths in the chorus of Vanishing Point, which otherwise has the potential to be the finest song by anyone ever, probabyl other but I can't quote them at this late hour. I don't know how to put it really, they sound jangly, tinny as Monty Python would put it? Of course they're still good songs, that's the point, wouldn't care otherwise. Now modern guys, they're just shadows nowadays, aren't they?

What so Technique is an album for shirt lifters.... And why may that be?

Technique is my all time favourite album.

I've had it on in the car for a couple of weeks now & still don't skip any tracks.

I use the 12" of R&R and extended mix of Run2, then add all the instrumentals at the end (except THO, sadly) and it's the nearest thing to musical perfection I can find.

After that, it'd be PC&L; Low-life; Brotherhood; WFTSC; Republic; Get Ready; Movement

Low Life has always been the best, followed by closely by PCL, Technique and Get Ready... GR has really grown on my in the last three years and has been climbing up.

Fine Time and Mr. Disco definitely have that late 80s house feel to them, but I think the album has largely dated much better than a lot of their other 1980s material.

Movement would be above Low-Life if it weren't for Martin Hannett's shoddy production... The songs on that LP sound ace live.

Technique PCL Low Life Brotherhood Republic Movement WFTSC Get Ready

I used to think Low Life was overrated. I kind of feel Bernard's voice is actually more consistent on PCL, and I feel the overall production on PCL is better. But, as an LP--A side/B side sequences,the strength of the songwriting, the playing of the band--Low Life is an impressive snapshot of a versatile and endlessly creative group.

Also, I thought WFTSC was a solid effort when it came out, but there's a denseness to it that's a bit tiring for the ear. Movement I never listen to anymore, but it gets points just for proving that they could still make an album after Ian's death. Plus the cover art is perfect. Get Ready sounds like a transitional record even though it's a reunion record. It's got some great songs, but it has an otherness to it that I can't quite put my finger on.

Well, the Factory years are out of contest. Each of those albums were milestones. But to be honest, my favourite one is Get Ready. This was the unexpected comeback, and it started with Crystal. A song that kicked in at the first listening. And the following song also rocked (the shack) WFTSC in contrast was such a dissapointment. Krafty was shite. And the rest was worse. Only exception is Draculas Castle, which is a good song but obviously has the worst song title in the history of pop music.

Brotherhood to me sounds largely like a bunch of half arsed demo recordings, and is poorly produced to boot. I've just never really taken to that album at all, I only really like Bizarre Love Triangle, All Day Long and Broken Promise. :( As for Movement, I actually really like the album, it's a bit doom and gloom a lot of the time but is one of New Order's more creative moments.

Actually I've just noticed that there is a quite clear electronic/dance over more guitar based divide in my selections there. Basically I must love New Order's dance orientated material a lot more than their guitar based stuff.

Technique! I've been listening to it in the car all week. Excellence.

It IS a summer album: ffs, it was recorded in the summer. And I heard for the first time in the summer, though I couldn't get it for a long time: it sounded something like the Pet Shop Boys or Erasure to me. I had only enjoyed Movement at that point.

I agree with Julijana that the arrangements are way dated, but the interesting thing is that when I heard it back '94, it sounded dated to me already back then. Those orchestral hits... The dance tracks existed in their own world that seemed to have nothing to do with then-current rhythm patterns, I mean it didn't sound like 1989 even! Were it released a little bit later in 1990 with a more updated rhythm, it would have blown the world away. Did anyone else feel the same way??

Lyrics and melody wise, it's top-notch though!

Tough call betwen PC&L and Technique but to me Pc&L just edges it as it has my favourtie NO album only songs, YSF, LMA and AOC.

Both albums would be in my all time top 10 along with the 2 x JD albums.
