It was a pretty good record. Not an instant classic, not as good as New Order, but the songs were well-written, well-produced, and nothing to be ashamed about.
It was certainly better than the 2nd Electronic LP, and easily better than the Peter Hook lp that came out last year (can't even remember the name of it, was how bad it was...)
Sumner knows how to make good records.
"Running out of luck" was as good as anything they have produced since factory in my opinion.

Agreed, and I think that Sink or Swim, This is Home, Summer Days, and Poisonous Intent were stellar too. PI had a few dodgy lyrics combined with a few really good lyrics, but the music was fantastic, I love how synth have and dancetastic it was.

Yes to both assertions.
I would add (at least) "Runaway" to this list.
All of which adds up to: a classic album, in my opinion.
Of course, the second Electronic LP is my favorite New Order-related album of them all.
Anyway, for sure looking forward to whatever Barney has to deliver in the future. He is a genius.

Runaway is fantastic. And the other songs you guys listed, just brilliant pop music that is totally underappreciated.
It gives me hope, to know that in his 50s, Sumner has still got it, and I can't wait to hear new New Order out of him that is a collaboration with Stephen and Gillian.
I am a huge Hooky fan, but am ok with him taking a break here, and hearing what the other three can brew up.

A "break" that you're "ok with"? ![]()
Wow, that's the most diplomatic way I've heard it all described.
Yes, Hooky's gone off for a coffee and a few biscuits while the others have a crack at it ![]()
No doubt he'll be back in 5.
Years.

Yeah i definitely thought that as "debut" albums go it was one of the better ones from recent times.
Running out of luck seemed like a sort of "leave me alone" type song that they havent done in a long time in my view. nicely done.
I feel that they do their best work when they dont mess about too long in the studio.

2 - The new stuff that they are working the NEW New Order group.
This was just a thought in my mind.
Don't be so bloody fucking ridiculous.

Hang on a minute son, running out of luck is a decent track but it's got nothing on the masterpiece from PC&L. In a completely different league.
new bad lieutenant songs are likely near completion. the last 14 were great. new new order songs may take another year or so. the 2005 unreleased songs will be greatly appreciated, as i have not heard a bad song yet , as evidenced by hellbent and the 150 songs guided by bernard, in the last 30 years. i like working overtime , and bl, and i never even noticed or cared that hook was missing from 49 electronic songs, or the ones by blank and jones, 808, hot chip ,or bl . 60 songs without hook that are great. it is bernard sumner's band and has been for thirty years. and hooky is not needed.
Not sure what Bad Loo record others were playing, but the album was far from stellar... more like shite. Comparing it to Elec's 2nd album does no good today (it was great when it came out, but hasn't stood the test of time).
Barney doesn't want to admit, as don't many here, that he NEEDS Hook, just as much as Hooky needs him to make a good album... apart they produce shite...
I predict worse shite if they produce another NO album without Hooky... i doubt I'd purchase it.
(and before anyone goes off about Elec's 1st album or Monaco, those didn't hit too high on the charts for a reason... only fans bought their stuff... and while I enjoy probably side projects as much as anyone else on here, all the side projects pale in comparison to JD or NO).

Have you read Barney's Angels manifesto lately?
I scratch my head at the statements that everything Barney has released post Factory is absolute greatness... actually some of it is rather embarrassing, while still some good songs, or at least some potential good songs with Bad Lieu. Questionable music choices, awful backing vocals, and putting himself out there as the standard stereotypical singer songwriter which is not his strength. It is hard to tell how much each band member adds to New Order, but it seems pretty obvious that they are better together than separate. It is no fluke that Bad Lieu, Freebass, and the last Electronic, Monaco, and Other Two albums received almost no attention beyond some of the core fan base.
For a new New Order album, Bernard needs input from others at this stage in his career. Maybe Stuart Price could be involved, who knows.

File that alongside your prediction that NO would announce their split after the 2 Shamberg shows, will we?

I never compared them as i personally think leave me alone is better but there is similarities in the song type and structure.

A couple added shows doesn't make the new NO permanent... but at the same time I figured Barney had a bit more sense than to think of recording new music and labeling it NO without Hooky (considering Bad Loo was already in motion, especially with a second record in the works, and the member list is essentially Bad Loo).
Reckon your wrong on this. I think It is permanent and that there will be new material

Bollocks.
"Electronic" reached #2 on the UK albums chart and went Gold (100,000 copies) the same year. Both "Raise The Pressure" and "Twisted Tenderness" entered the top 10 in their respective first weeks of general release. The "Get The Message" single was #1 in the US Modern Rock Chart of the time.
"Music For Pleasure" reached #11 in the UK albums chart and sold hundreds of thousands of copies including in the USA (I think the final amount was over 500,000 worldwide). The two initial singles off the album "What Do You Want From Me?" and "Sweet Lips" were top 20 hits in the UK at the time and received a great deal of airplay and favourable reviews.

To be honest, when I see a band line-up with Bernard Sumner, Gillian Gilbert, Stephen Morris and Phil Cunningham on board I would consider it to be more New Order than BL. There's 75% of the original line-up there and a guy who was considered a member of the band by the others for five years and played countless gigs with them.
Yes Hooky is a rather large part that's missing but that's been chewed over a lot already so no point in going back over it. He's off happily doing his own thing as he wanted to do.
Also Jake Evans, Jack Mitchell, Alex James and Matt Evans all played on the Bad Lieutenant LP. In fact, ex-Blur bassist Alex James contributed more in terms of tracks than Stephen M did. Album liner notes are wonderful things (!)
A new NO album without Hooky would be the most electronic ever by them. Even more than Republic!

None of them has to play guitar though, they're all comfortable behind synths (or just singing). I feel a mainstream dance album coming, closest to Republic, guitars only decorative.

I think that would sound nice if it did happen, IMO.
Phil is comfortable behind a synth, you think? I don't think he hates it, but he definitely appears to enjoy guitar more to me - he's a guitarist who plays occasional keyboards.
My intent was to point out that if they do this, then the absence of Peter Hook doesn't necessarily mean an electro sound, they are at their best when they blend guitars and synths - no decorations required.

"Didn't hit too high on the charts"
I stand corrected... but at the same time, never heard any of them played on the radio, during a time when I listened to the radio a lot, and to radio stations that were quite responsible for making Brit bands big in the US (91X and KROQ).... so usually played on those stations way before ever played on any other station.

I'm actually in the minority remaining here that prefers guitary New Order, but from I've managed to pick up in Barney's recent interviews - colaborations with Westbam and Stuart Price, rejection of early work, remixed versions live, and Barney saying the second BL album was going to be more synth orientated - I bet they'll go all out dancey, not without guitars but not with them as a driving force. Don't really know how much input Phil wil have anyway, now that Marion are reforming?
