Why a small venue for the first gig in UK after these long 5 years?

Do they think that without Hooky it was not possible to have a crowded venue?

Do they need more rehearsal time to get ready for a bigger audience?

Do they want to show Hooky that New Order is still strong without him?

Don't they want to have trouble with lawyers?

Tell what's on your mind! :read:

Not enough fans left.

It is plain to see that we bastards prefer New Order than any other member of the band? Is that right?

If it was Bernard who left, would it be the same?

Gillian's agoraphobic.

So they can say "SOLD OUT IN FIFTEEN MINUTES!!!111!!"

Is a 2,300 seat venue really considered that small? That's a fairly large mid sized venue, seems an appropriate size venue for New Order.

Proof of concept.

They couldn't shift 500 tickets for 4/5ths the same band in Sheffield at £17.50 a pop.

Change the guitarist for a keyboard player, put a new name on, and you can sell 5 times the number of tickets at twice the price.

Slight difference, that was for Bad L where you hoped you would hear some New Order stuff (and did). This is New Order without the ego where you know you will hear New Order stuff. So not sure your proof of concept works to be honest

Well... its probably name recognition more than anything else. I didn't see Bad Lieu as a "new" band as such anyway, just a renamed version of New Order with a slightly new line up.

Fair enough view - I was the opposite though - I liked a number of tracks off their album and with Jake and Tom it did feel different at the 3 gigs I went to paticulaly when Jake sang

It did feel different, but not that much. When Gillian left and Phil and his geetar came in it was different. When Hooky left.. and it was called Bad Lieu it was different. But NO evolved, be they called BL, NO, etc., with slightly changing lineups.

That said, if BL had played under the name NO, and "Never Cry Another Tear" came out under the name NO, you can bet they'd've sold twice as many tickets as Bad Lieutenant did, albeit on the strength of an album everyone would've said was bobbins.

Better atmosphere in a smaller venue possibly, as well as being more profitable. Atmosphere at gigs is big thing nowadays as its the main money grabber for bands now and if people are willing to pay the money to see them you have to give them a good show.

Bands cant afford to play in front of a dozen people or half empty arenas anymore if they want to keep playing.

Its an awful pity though.

Small venues are the domain of those bands who have fallen from grace and just want to start from the botom again.......or alternatively it could be a way for Bernard and Co to re-connect with their audience in a manner that at least means they could see the whites of each other's eyes (and the fillings in the teeth when everybody opens their gobs to sing along.)

At least they're not The Cure.... doing ten hour long sets and shows so long that sleeping bags are on sale at the merchandise store.

Brazil will be a festival gig. Outdoor venue. Same where Sao Paulo Carnaval happens. Not comparable.

Didn't they downgrade the venue at their last UK date before the split in Bournmouth?

Yup. They moved from the 6,500 capacity Windsor hall to the 2,000 capacity Solent hall.

Manchester apollo must be no more than 3,000 capacity and must be largest you get without doing arenas

Seems right sized venues to me......

As ever, their operations seem a bit haphazard and chaotic. If you were looking to maximise impact and revennue presumably you'd have timed the gigs to coincide with a release, e.g. Total.

If they'd have done that you'd have hoped they could have aimed for a venue like Brixton Academy (capacity 4,921), which is just a brilliant venue, one they've played very successfully over the years and frankly (from a selfish point of view) just more accessible for fans.

I think, this time around, their modus operandi has proved to be anything but haphazard and chaotic. Quite the opposite in fact.

They've got two gigs 'for charidee' under their belts, out of the way of the British public. They've brought back crowd pleasers (586, Age of Consent), updated other tracks (True Faith, Temptation) and now also have a video backdrop to match each track. They're now off to do reasonably big gigs in South America, again away from the glaring eye of the British public. And, for their first sojourn on UK shores in 5 years, they've picked a slightly 'leftfield' venue, but it's on a Saturday and reasonably central so anyone wishing to travel can't really complain too much. Playing the likes of the Troxy has almost certainly created a far bigger buzz than simply playing the likes of Brixton Academy / Manchester Apollo could ever have done.

There'll doubtless be more one-off dates to follow this, again building the hype, with the lucrative festival spots next summer.

I think they've probably got their plans spot on this time around.

Despite the high esteem we all hold New Order in I doubt they'd sell enough tickets these days for a stadium tour.

Makes sense, start off small and see if the interest is still there.

And, for all the criticism he got for the way he went about it, Hooky was right about this all along.

So was he also right about the twatty way they dealt with him? If so Im not sure if I wouldnt also be calling everyone a cunt too.

Gene wrote: Despite the high esteem we all hold New Order in I doubt they'd sell enough tickets these days for a stadium tour.

They've never done a stadium tour though. Not on these shores. Gigs at the likes of G-Mex and Wembley were done as one-offs at the very peak of their zenith.

I think most people here would turn their noses up at having to see New Order in aircraft hangars.

One-off gigs ... on Saturdays ... in mid-sized venues ... is the future (I hope!)

Except for some outdoor festival shows, which I assume they will do next year... does any band really like playing in large arenas, other than dicks like U2? Does any fan like watching shows in large arenas? Maybe Bernard will tour more if the gigs are more fun, rather than larger.

Here's some thoughts on the "split", by the way.

I don't think the split was solely caused by Hooky leaving.

Now that Gillian's health issues are open, it's highly understandable that Stephen (and Gillian) were not really able to commit to full time band activity in 2007-9. Which, with Hooky leaving, left New Order down to one man and practically inactive until Stephen and / or Gillian could come back.

Does anybody seriously think that Stephen was going to play drums and tour the world whilst his wife (also the bands keyboard player) was going through Chemotherapy and facing a potentially terminal condition?

In these circumstances, even if Hooky hadn't left, its certainly not surprising at all that the band was on hiatus / split until everything was clearer.

Not so plain to me. Main reason for the split was Hooky intending to do a JD World Tour with New Order members.

Then he used FAC/Hacienda name without telling anyone and decided to play JD songs with his own band. Both things drove Bernard wild

This thread reminded me that 7 out of the 8 New Order gigs I've been to were at outdoor venues. I don't think they ever had a problem selling tickets in Californa so these outdoor gigs were a necessity.

1987: The Greek Theatre in Berkeley 8,500 capacity (co-headline tour with Echo & the Bunnymen)

1989: Santa Barbara Bowl 4,562 Irvine Meadows 16,085 (headlined both shows)

1993: Shoreline Amphitheatre 22,500 The Hollywood Bowl 18,000 (headlined both shows)

2001: Shoreline Amphitheatre 22,500 (Moby Area One Festival)

2005: Kaiser Convention Center 5,492 (headlined) Coachella Festival

Yeah, both times I've seen them have been outside. I was always hoping they'd eventually play an indoor show in my town, but whoever their tour promoter in the US was kept booking them into Merriweather Post Pavilion. They played there in 87, 89 and 93 (I saw the last two of those).

Right now they are building things up by playing mid-size gaffs they know they can sell out at the drop of a titfor. They know they can fill these places easily, don't need to tread carefully. Just see how rapido they sold out. Not everyone gets a brief? tough titty. Folk have to be at their PCs banging refresh like demented woodpeckers? so what. Creates excitement, leaves punters wanting more.

Hook got bucket loads of shit for going well below the belt in recent interviews. I didn't see anyone condemn him for predicting NO would carry on beyond the two Shamberg gigs. Everyone expected that. And wanted that too. That was Hook trying to twist things when there was nothing there to twist......surprised you fell for that.

Given Hook's had his lawyers on speed dial over the last 5 years and used that approach to grab the Hac brand for himself (and crucified it), he has set the tone and has noone to blame but himself for the way he's been treated. Hoisted by his own petard I'm afraid.

So what exactly don't you agree with Gene and why?

That Hook has used lawyers aggressively? That he's used them against his old band mates left right and centre? That he hasn't turned the Hac into a joke? What exactly?

How others see your stance on Hook is important to you? Well we differ there. I couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks about my views on NO's former bass player. Each to their own.

Id agree with that but i have to say that i cant remember bernard and co mentioning the hacienda all that often,at least before 24HPP.I dont think bernard and steve have a right to complain about what hooky is doing when the option was there for them to do something different or cash in so to speak.

Though personally im glad they didnt get involved in factory/hacienda nostalgia but i do think they should quit complaining about hooky doing it.

Fans like us don't have to be pro or anti any member of the band, it is possible to be pleased that New Order are back but to regret that Hooky isn't involved and also some people here don't like to see Hooky being demonised or seen as some sort of villian when clearly New Order meant as much to him as it did to the others. His ill-tempered comments re the reunion of course played right in the hands of his detractors but maybe folks should give the Hooky bashing a little break now,it's getting tiresome.

Am slightly confused now Gene, reading your last message whether you're for or against a bit of Anglo Saxon. Hey ho, now I know you're a sensitive little flower I'll try to be on my best behaviour. Best steer clear of any boozer for the foreseeable, I've been in some and trust me, some of the language was pretty peachy.

Anyways, thankyou for clarifying your position. Most appreciated. Now, why don't you believe the ex bass player has brought it all on his own head?

Seriously, it's like someone who's spent 5 years poking a bear and is now crying cos it's bitten him.

Cranelane, I agree in principle that the personal attacks on Hooky have gotten tiresome, but with all the "NO Hooky, No New Order" comments on facebook, I wanted to offer the following perspective.

In my 7 years visiting this forum I hadn't seen any all-out Hooky bashing until the last year or so. And even now I think most of it has been pretty restrained. In contrast, the Bernard bashing has been a regular hobby round here. "Oh, Bernard's songwriting has been wank for ages", "Bernard ruined Republic", "Raise The Pressure is a pile of shite", "His voice has gotten lame since he learned how to sing properly", "Bernard sucks for thinking Movement sucks", "Never Cry Another Tear proves Bernard has lost his way completely", "Bernard NEEDS Hooky", "Bernard has too much of an ego", etc. etc.

Granted those aren't ver batim quotes, but they're pretty close to capturing the drivel Hooky partisans have posted for ages. For chrissakes, it's a fucking bass guitar with a chorus pedal. It's not the heart and soul of NO, just like Ian wasn't the genius behind Steve's hypnotic rhythms or Bernard's guitar riffs. New Order has been a group effort with a de facto band leader, who, frankly, did a bang up job composing (and singing) some great songs. Their golden years may be behind them, but I think Bernard, Steve, and Gillian can make a handful of good tracks sans Hooky. And still be New Order.

Johnny Giles wrote: Now, why don't you believe the ex bass player has brought it all on his own head?

Because most rational people dont change things without a reason. He wasnt happy in New Order when he used to be happy in New Order. I personally think something as well as himself made him leave New Order. Whatever that something was is partly to blame, whether that something was a singer called Bernard we dont know.

So, I dont think Hooky woke up one day and decided to fuck things up for the fun of it.

BTW, swear if you want, I just surprises me how het up folk get. This isnt the real world, its a band forum. Im off to put the kids to bed then have a Stella. Join me if you want

I walked out of a job recently cos i couldn't stand working for a bunch of c___s anymore. But they carry on working, and I'm not moaning about it, or interested in trying to get back in. Hooky should be happy he'll be getting bigger royalty cheques.

I couldn't agree more with you on this. Each to their own, I guess, though perhaps it's time we gave new New Order a chance. I, for one, welcome their reunion sans Peter Hook. After all, New Order have always risen from the ashes of the phoenix, that's innate in them and what I love about them.

Neither do I but perhaps he himself was going through a difficult period around the time of the fallout. Here is a quote from an interview Hooky did in September this year and is perhaps the most revealing set of words yet on the 2006 split:

If you were to take something from this experience what would it be?

You see the problem that I had when the band split up was that I was an alcoholic. Because I was an alcoholic, I had no confidence. I was severely wounded in myself. I had no strength of character and wasn’t able to stand up to Bernard. I wasn’t able to stand up to Steve. I just couldn’t explain myself. It took me a long time to just…find myself. As corny as that sounds. However, when New Order split up I couldn’t explain to anybody why or what the problem was—now I can. It’s just too late isn’t it? But I’m happy now.

The full interview is here so everyone can read the source of that quote (page 2). I think it's very admirable for him to publicly admit he had an addiction problem but how that problem impacted life inside New Order prior to the '06 split none of us really know. We won't know until someone puts out a book  which at this rate looks like will be Hooky first.

I think someone else on this forum put it brilliantly a few months ago: the situation is sad, there will be lots of public blood letting, both parties will put out books and somewhere between the two will lie the truth. Sounds about right to me.

Loved seeing Freebass at a tiny venue.

New Order have always sounded better in medium venues rather than large/outdoor ones.

I'm not hugely keen to see New Order live without Hooky, doing old songs, but really hope they go on to record new material. Some Gillian vocals would be welcome as well.

Would I have minded if "Twist of Fate" had been released as a "New Order Now" single? Not at all.

If NCAT had been a New order album, we'd've all been moaning about its somewhat pedestrian rock leanings. It's certainly, to me, the least satisfying album Barney has sung on since 1981. Had it been called NooOrdah I'm sure it would've been ranked in my bottom 2 NO LP's. On the other hand, at least I could afford the most recent studio recordings. Hooky's probably planning a Tell-All book called "Power,Corruption & Lies", witha 10" yellow vinyl single of re-recordings of Electronic songs and authentic Hacienda brick for £13,981.

In three weeks Julio will be standing at the airport, pointing to the sky in feverish expectation of Barney's arrival and some super brown-nosing. He will of course at one point shout 'De plane, boss. I can see de plane'.

Get where you're coming from. My first thought is, just how rational has Hook been over the last few years? He's been very emotional that's for sure. There's a clash with Bernard, he's made that clear. And recently he's expanded the clash to all the band members, his perogative. This isn't that uncommon in bands. But once you get lawyers involved things get nasty and that's the point where an amicable resolution is hard to reach.

This is why I have little sympathy for Hook's situation. It looks like the others have turned the tables on him to get New Order back up and running. And his insensitive bad-mouthing over the last few weeks has certainly hardened my attitude further.

I don't think he just decided to fuck things up either, but there are certain events which may have triggered a step change in his behaviour. Events which were entirely down to him. So overall, I feel he has to take responsibility for the way things have turned out.

Gene, I swear when I'm happy, sad, angry or chirpy. Don't read anything in to it, certainly wasnt directed at you. A quick glance through this thread shows us you have used twatty, cunt and wank - good work sir.

In three weeks Julio will be standing at the airport, pointing to the sky in feverish expectation of Barney's arrival and some super brown-nosing. He will of course at one point shout 'De plane, boss. I can see de plane'.

Burt, let's not be unfair.

I think if Julio feels this strongly then when New Order play that Brazil festival next month he should boycott the gig and stay at home. That'll show Bernard.

Would I have minded if "Twist of Fate" had been released as a "New Order Now" single? Not at all.

I am quite a simplistic sort of fella and my view is this. I live in the same village as the two of them. One is always happy to have a chat on the rare occasion you bump into him, he generally finishes with "thanks for supporting us" and shakes your hand, the other is a bit smug and arrogant - work out which is which!!

Musicians are generally smug and arrogant though and on other occasions they are able to mask it.

You may as well spill the beans because supporters of both could provide equally damning evidence to the contrary.

Maybe NOOL could take a poll of how many times fans have asked Barney or Hooky for awkwardly close cell phone pictures with them... and how many times they agreed or refused. And then come to some sort of conclusion of who is less arrogant... unless you conclude that the bigger egomaniac is the one who wants more attention. :confused2:

Regarding the 'no Hooky, no New Order' comments I've seen online, if the band see that the demand for the 'new' New Order is greater than some of the people saying that, they probably will continue. The best some of the fans can do is to ignore this new New Order, or pretend they do not exist, instead of saying 'no Hooky no New Order' ALL the time online.

Oh and like I've said earlier about the venue sizes, maybe bigger isn't always better. Maybe there are advantages to these medium sized places than huge arenas with tens of thousands of people.

Erm.....I've been a musician for a long time now and I know musicians across the spectrum from up-and -coming to well-known names. I wouldn't usually broadcast this but I'm replying to the above quote. On the whole smugness and arrogance are "qualities" I certainly don't possess and it's rare that I come across it with people I know.

That quote is crass, cheap and ill-informed.

luckily im going to the troxy gig (even tho i said i would not if hooky wasnt playing....im a bit two faced....lol). im intrigued as to how the dynamic of the band will be without hooky as most of the attention will be on barney...and his dancing is kkkkrrraaaaap. The best gig i ever seen was new order at the tower ballroom in brum....smallish venue....and they blew the roof off the place...the band and the crowd were up for a good time ...so this small one off gig will be amazing...but a bit sad coz hooky is not there.

I did say "generally" because there are always exceptions but im also a musician and i can say from experience that it is the case,a lot of them are smug and arrogant because you need that arrogance and smugness to succeed or at the very least the confidence not to resort to writing music for the mainstream.

I dont believe that arrogance and smugness are a bad thing to be honest especially when its well founded.

Arguably if you didnt have the arrogance of johnny rotten for example its likely this website wouldnt be here today and hundreds of bands wouldnt have seen the light of day.

Sorry not been at a PC all day - yes that's my view. I was a bit unfair really on the arrogant piece. Peter does not seem as humble as Bernard would be a better way of putting it.

For me I saw a change at the Finsbury Park gig where Hooky was all over the stage and at one point Bernard asked where's Hooky.

I like both of them but Bernard comes across as a really nice guy who has time for everyone, can't say the same for Peter.

What about Brazil and Chile? Check please and tell us.

Brazil will be a festival gig. Outdoor venue. Same where Sao Paulo Carnaval happens. Not comparable.

Capacity in Chile is around 15K to 20K, depends on how the venue will be organized inside (moving walls....)

For sure such kind of gig attracts much more audience in South America than in UK.....it is only the 3rd time NO comes to Brazil....2nd time in Argentina and 1st one in Chile.

Well, about Hooky and Bernard, it is up to them. I just want to enjoy the band and the musics.

Hooky's been lovely the couple of times I briefly met him.

Not met Barney, or Steve mind you.

On the other hand, I've got friends in bands, and seen some really weird people get obsessive over relatively normal people who happen to be in bands. I cannot guarantee I'd be as patient as them, to be honest, when talking to someone who is a little bit ... keen. (Not saying that any of you are)

I agree, he is, everyone is different I suppose, neither get particularly bothered by people where we live, the footballers are a lot more recognisable to the masses. My point is that Bernard is more interested in what you like about things rather than being just feeling good that you notice them for being in NO. eg nice to meet you, been a fan for a long time - BS - thanks, whats your favorite song - oh, whys that PH - thanks.

Hard to explain and as I said before it's just my view.

Other boring fact is that you see a lot more of Hooky than Bernard but he has always said, he is a private person

Funnily enough it was Hooky as the more chatty and friendly up to a (relatively) short time ago if my memory serves me right (but none of the band struck me as arrogant), just check the pictures in people's avis up to recent outbursts. Oh the good old days when we knew nothing about bandmembers and could just imagine them to be cool/suck/whatever as we liked and just stuck to the music. Because back then the music mattered.

Not sure i'm comfortable about em playing the likes of V festival.Playing to the Stereophonics/ Foo Fighters/ Kings Of Leon loving masses ??? Might be hard work that one:laugh: Though a challenge would do em good

I think they'd do well, in a nostalgic kind of way.

What would piss me off would be the BBC coverage and having to put up with Reggie Fucking Yates and the like pretending to know anything about the band.

Oh fuck, I can picture it now. Someone get me a Stella.

And Fearne Cotton claiming she's a lifelong fan:uhoh:

It will be clear as day that neither of them will know its not the original line-up.

EDIT : Look at me, shouting at the telly like an old twat when they arent even appearing yet.:banghead:

Even though it has cost me double the face value for a ticket I am pleased NO are playing a smaller venue, they sound much better and the atmosphere will be excellent. Of course it would be better with Hooky but I am seeing hte Light at the Lowry a week on saturday and a few weeks later new Order and between them Reorder so that completes the lot. Looking forward to them all. It will be the most NO related gigs I have seen in a year (and I've been a fan since 86) as I saw the Light at the new factory club back in April. So its not so bad is it?

I agree, better in smaller venues. Not good moneywise though. And if we're honest, this looks financially driven now, festivals next year and so on.

Saw BL at the Masque in Liverpool, it's tiny. But Barney did his best, crowd size, half full? and "smell", his words, considered.

Don't care what drives them to perform just glad they are touring again, especially with the badly missed Gillian. Also happy for Hooky to perform his stuff too.

Are they as pop as U2 or Shakira to play in a f. big venue? The concept still the same, always New Order.

It is not a football game. Its New Order.

Well you are only as big as your crowds, and South America is still very strong for NO.
