Latest New Order Gems Out Of Reach For U.S. Fans New box set, greatest-hits disc not scheduled for release Stateside.

Did you find 1995's Best of New Order unsatisfying? Did the movie "24 Hour Party People" have you itching for more New Order rarities? Well, if you live in the U.S. consider yourself S.O.L.

Though they're slated for release overseas, neither New Order's forthcoming box set nor their new greatest hits CD, Here to Stay, are slated to land in U.S. stores, due to the band's current wrangling with parent label WEA.

Last year when New Order released their seventh studio album, Get Ready, it seemed like nobody was all that ready for their return. After an eight-year hiatus, the post-punk pioneers got a tepid reception, barely marking up the Billboard albums chart before falling off entirely.

And even though a chorus of critics hailed Get Ready as one of the best albums of 2001, it took the release of Michael Winterbottom's homage to No Wave Manchester, "24 Hour Party People," to put New Order back on the proverbial map.

Today New Order are riding on a full tank of pop-culture clout with a new generation of freshly minted fans. However, despite the swell of renewed interest, none of WEA's affiliated labels — such as Atlantic, Warner Bros. and Rhino — has stepped forward to put out the rarities-riddled box set or the new greatest-hits collection, which features period remixes.

A rep from New Order's U.S. management accused the record companies of lacking a spine. "If record companies and radio can't exploit bands, then they don't know how to handle them. I think it's systematic of the whole industry, not just one company. These companies can only handle radio fodder, although I don't know what that says about the whole business itself."

WEA had no comment except to reiterate that it will be releasing Here to Stay internationally and that New Order still have a label relationship with Warner Bros. in the United States.

Logically, if GR didn't do so well stateside last year then it's not entirely out of line for the record company to dispense with what may very well be an even more costly venture. With the box set you've got to take into account how many cds are to be manufactured, the packaging, promotion, etc, etc, and while this doesn't excuse the fact that no stateside release will be forth coming, it does help to put it into perspective. Besides, I was considering ordering it import anyway (to get me grubby little paws on it before anyone else!!!!), so now I just have no choice. Still sucks, though.....

I still can't believe they only released ONE single from Get Ready this side of the atlantic.

Turn My Way would have been the perfect follow-up to Crystal. And then they could have released Here To Stay (the single, not the compilation). Create a fuzz around the band and all that stuff... but no... they had to mess everything up!

Well, what can we say about a company that didn't update their website from the first day the album was out.

Especially that Crystal reached the #1 on the dance chart...

Gee, is anyone surprised that they aren't releasing the New Order box-set or best of? Just look at the state of major label American 'rock', 'alternative', 'college' (or whatever the term of the month is) music today. If it doesn't sound like Creed, Staind, or one of those other sound-alike bands with the singer-with-the-annoying-growly-voice, none of which I can tell apart from the other, it won't fly with the big labels over here at the moment. A pessimistic view, perhaps, but I'm afraid it appears to be true.... I think there are a lot more Americans who would buy the best of and/or box-set than the label realizes. Especially those who grew up with New Order and might not have bought Get Ready because they haven't listened to the band lately, or didn't realize they had a new album out because of poor publicity; even those who were captured by the recent '80s revival, perhaps. Not only hardcore fans will be interested in the albums. They won't be top 20 sellers, I'm sure, but I think they could sell respectably well. But, yes, I think amazon.co.uk is going to have to be the best (and cheapest) option. :\ohwell:

Here in Grand Rapids we have an awesome music store that carries all kinds of stuff like that - they assured me that the NO box set will be readily available there.

Any NO fan worth their salt would never have thought for a moment the set would come out in the US... it's nice to dream, but reality will set in sooner or later.

Thank god for indie music stores! But you're probably going to have to pay an arm and a leg for it. I'd still check out the price on amazon.co.uk and compare it to the music store price before you buy, as you know how expensive import prices can be! :wink:

I don't think we have any cool music stores here in Orlando, as we're basically ruled by the Mouse. Although, I've only lived here a short while, and if anyone's been down here on holiday and has found one, I'd sure like to know about it!

Totally agree with you about the current trend in todays music, and what I like to call 'the Creed Sound.' Alternative means nothing these days. Alternative to what? To the gazillion other bands that sound exactly the same? That stupid, whiny, I'm-so-worthless voice really pisses me off. If I hear "With Arms Wide Ooap-aaannnnnn" one more time...

i was waiting for the damn box set for christmas (or later) and i believe that saving up my gift certificates for the box set is pointless now. i don't even wanna know how much a uk imported box set will cost. :nonono:

Buy this man a cigar! I mean...ever since Nirvana broke into the scene in 92, it paved the way for these kinds of "I'm the first one in line to take the american grunge sound" bands. Now we're basking in a sea of out of this world trash in the form of kreed, korn, limp biskit, no doubt, kid rock, kelly osbourne, etc.

Just curious but do you brits have to put up with such crap on your radio?

You mean, buy this WOMAN a cigar! (A Cuban, please). As a Yank who lived in the UK for 6 years, I can say that the UK gets pseudo-punk/nu-metal bands like Korn and Linkin Park (who made it big everywhere), and, yes, there are a few Korn kiddies walking the streets, with the wallet chains, Korn t-shirts and baggy trousers, looking all forlorn, and you can hear growly-voiced bands like Creed and Staind on MTV Europe, but these genres are far from the norm, thank god! Give me Kylie any day! There's much more of a variety in Britain, and it's ok to like a variety of music, ie. techno/pop/indie/hip-hop all at once. What a novel idea! I come back here, and I'm inundated by these post-grunge, bands with identical gravel-voiced singers with all this fake angst, or so-called 'punk' bands (Blink-182, please stand up!) who wouldn't know what punk was if it smacked them in the face, who think they're oh-so-different. Well, being a cookie-cutter MTV band fan doesn't make you different, kids. There's nothing wrong with being strongly influenced by someone else, or being on MTV, or making a lot of money, but just don't deny that that's what you are doing! Don't be all angsty about it. Have some fun for a change! I loved grunge as much as everyone else did, but it's gone now. Let's move on. Ditto with punk. Let's call it something else now! 'Cause what I'm hearing sure ain't punk!

To add to the "confusion", the recent EW (with Justin Tendershakes of Nsuck on the cover, but I deny seeing him there before I bought it) lists the New Order best-of AND a new JD best-of as November releases. 11/12, to be exact. What gives? Was this decision reached prior to EW printing, or after? :confused:

you should never be ashamed about buying EW. it's the true bible of popular cultural gossip and must be revered as such! maybe someone at the record company wandered on to this website and saw the wrath of the american fans, so they changed their mind about the release? god, lets hope so!

Right on! Grunge is gone, Punk is dead (real punk anyway) and Techno is getting a little repetative... time to move on. There shouldn't be any US band with enough real angst and outrage or lack of interest to really be a true 1980s punk band, let alone 3 or 4 of them in the same band. Grunge was a 2 year love affair tops, but now that love is a faint memory.
