DJ after DJ after DJ.............
No, because I didn't feel like paying $300 for a ticket just to see New Order. I don't care about any of the other bands/DJs, etc.
It's sad that New Order didn't extend their stay in America for a mini tour, just one week; 4-5 gigs at least would be so welcome by many!!
Kraftwerk, new order and groove armada all in one go! that would have been a dream gig if it was over here (and groove armada were playing rather than dj'ing)

I'd rather see Kraftwerk stand emotionless behind 4 synths rather than watch 'New' New Order. As for the rest of the fodder. No thanks.

Why's that though?
You presumably know Kraftwerk are now only one-quarter of their 'classic' lineup, whereas New Order boast at least three-quarters.

Kraftwerk may as well be Robots. So seeing them live without an original member(s) isn't such a big deal. (I'm a massive fan by the way). The New Order live experience for me was heightened by Hooky's enormous stage presence. Unfortunately he has been replaced by an average session musician with a tendency to prance about and play the bass like a girl. (No offence intended). It's tainted my love for them. But such is life and hopefully sometime in the future Hooky will reunite with B, S and G and perform again.

No need to be rude about Hooky's girth.
I can see why you wouldn't want someone playing bass "like a girl', though. Since females couldn't possibly contribute anything worthwhile to your sausage fantasy version of New Order.
kraftwerk may look likr they're stood there motionless but they're working pretty hard, I think only ralph is playing anything but 2 others are mixing and adding effects a bit like a dj, and the fourth is controling the video screens, also interesting that no one person has been in kraftwerk all through their carreer. ralph left to finish at uni for a year.

Gillian would play it better than Chapman.
I'll be at the festival. I only want to see New Order and Kraftwerk...can I sell my tickets for the other two days or did they make it so that is impossible?

They may not be the 'classic' lineup but Henning Schmitz and Fritz Hilpert are the longest standing members of Kraftwerk now, apart from Ralph and Florian of course.

Hilpert's contributions extend to one album only though, and I don't think Schmitz has ever had a song-writing credit with KW?
They're playing someone else's music on stage.

As did Wolfgang Flur, he had no songwriting credits. Also, one of their key songwriters has never appeared on stage.
Henning Schmitz was an engineer and had his first credit on Electric Cafe. Fritz Hilpert had a prominent credit on The Mix, though he obviously didn't write the original tracks he may have rearranged them. Soundtracks has his first writing credit. Schmitz is presumably still engineering rather than writing.

Probably for the best, if you consider Yamo's output.

This is exactly how I feel about the current NO. Hooky was a critical part of the live dynamic. That skinny lad jumping about like a bell-end front of stage swinging his bass is just wrong. Session musicians should be heard and not seen. That said I'm torn by the fact that the set-list for these shows looks ten times more interesting than anything they've done in the past ten years.

You may have a point about "Session musicians should be heard and not seen", but try to put yourself in Tom's shoes. The guy is probably a long time fan who got the chance to play with his influences. Could you imagine being on stage listening to the intro of Temptation or Crystal (before the bass comes)? In his place I would be making a fool of myself also.

I don't think there is a bass playng new order fan that would not jump at the chance of doing his job, and we'd all make complete cocks of our selfs! I'd totally fuck it up!
Let's face it, Hooky became a parody of himself on stage in the noughties. He never use to prowl around like a look-at-me try hard. He was always cooler just stood there, occasionally with his back to us. Then he started competing for our attention, hmmm.

I have the Finsbury park DVD, and during 'True Faith', Hooky shouts something, which I thought was distracting. And that's just by watching the DVD. Not really a fan of those types of actions. However, I also find the 'come on!' that Bernard sometimes says during LWTUA to be distracting as well.
I agree. Finsbury park was the first time I thought blimey his ego's taken over him. Reckon Bernard was pissed off as I remember him asking wheres Hookey. As for Tom - fair play to him, he is enjoying himself and doing a good job too

It's a shame that Michael Woods won't be performing with Example. Changed The Way You Kissed Me was a crossover-genre classic last year.
Enjoy the gig to all going. There should be some DJs you'll like. ![]()

Kraftwerk at 9:30
Well it was a good time and New Order didn't disappoint. Lots of annoying dubstep kids almost made me turn around as soon as I saw the line to get in but New Order made it worth it.
"You're in a beautiful place in a beautiful country and New Order on stage, what more could you ask for?" - Bernard Sumner tonight in Miami
From what I remember...Crystal, Ceremony, Regret, The Perfect Kiss, Bizarre Love Triangle, 586, True Faith, Blue Monday, Temptation

That looks pretty awesome! Wish I was there. Love the part where everyone's clapping above their heads.
At 0.32 sec in, Phil goes to Tom, "We are really lucky bastards." Or, maybe he's saying "We are totally carrying this band." Haha.
Fuckers, I was not there. Lucky sods you lot.
What a 40-minute set, ha, though? Anyway, PM me, for a concert in Kansas City, MO (NO management).

It's your very subjective point of view. In Perth a woman asked me: "Who is the new bass player. He is hot!

They sound awesome! I remember seeing all sorts of older live videos and they sounded kind of sloppy but not anymore...I noticed during Ceremony that Bernard is actually a decent guitarist and there weren't any mistakes or missed notes like in the past.
As for the second video...the sound quality is so much better than mine! I am jealous. The bass drum pretty much distorted all my videos.
IMO blue monday sounds weird, whats up with Tom changing the bass part on the last part of BM. sounds pretty whack. BM w/o hooky is like fish&chips w/o the chips.![]()
Sounds "awesome" because it is rather prepared by the staff. Chapman, ironically, probably is the most "live" of any of the band members. If you like it to sound like a CD, it sounds good. But you lose improvisation, random mistakes, and a different energy in band personality. Stuart Price has added some very good ideas, but not much real live energy except the band having fun. Hooky had become a boorish rock star cliche by the 2005-6 shows, but all you get now is Barney's "special" uncomfortable dancing and neutral singing. Let Chapman have fun, the show needs it.
Maybe they could make a deal... Hooky will shut up and settle if Barney will stop the embarrassing old man prancing and dancing on stage. Get Barney an instrument to occupy himself, he can keep it simple. I bet there were many kids at the back saying WTF why is the boring old fat guy wandering around the stage like that?

Sonic quality is part of the A-game that bands and acts have to bring if they play festivals these days. They can't be as punk about it as they used be in the 80s - those days are gone. There are some amazing acts at the UMF this year - Little Dragon, etc., who I've seen live and they are sonically ace in live performances and improvising. But yeah, given that New Order songs are more traditional type, well-known songs (verse/chorus, etc.), it might be hard to improvise out of that on the spot and and retain sonic quality, not like how The Chemical Bros. do running Ableton Live and Logic and synched to massive visuals (There's this fantastic article in Sound on Sound late last year about how the Chemical Bros. improvise and maintain timing in a synched set which any of you technical types might want to check out).
Still, I think New Order can surprise us for some songs, maybe segue/medley more between tracks in interesting ways... now that they are using visuals though, they will need to prepare even more to make that work.
Another great thing about New Order playing festivals is that they can see what other acts have been doing up close, and maybe get fresher ideas too. New music always keeps you young.
perhaps bernard should not dance, but at least he is happy, and he does not seem to be embarrassed. he is a very good at cowbell and melodica, plus harmonica and tambourine. there are lots of devices he could hold. also- he kindly does not take his shirt off. bless him for his awkwardness, or his specialness.

underworld is another great band that combines visuals, and live playing, mixing for their music and concerts.
it would be hard for new order to do this style, their music is a very different style. the visuals are a nice addition though.

Another thought: What's especially great about New Order's current performances is that they are paying attention to keeping things new nonetheless. 5-8-6 and playing a hybrid remixed version of True Faith is ace in my opinion. They can totally do it with the catalog they have, so even though they have well-known traditional songs, the ability to update to now is ![]()
Moreover, I'm happy they are doing so much to make these shows fantastic for fans. In no way are they doing these shows with the expectation that "We are New Order, we used to be Joy Division, so please bow before our legacy." It's tremendous to be a New Order fan these days.

Ultra films everything on the bigger stages - don't expect to ever see any of the footage though. For years they teased DVDs, online footage, etc and have come up with nothing. Back in 2003-2005 they gave out a DVD as you walked in of videos from the previous year, with the sound dubbed over for studio versions. Of course back then it was only DJs but still. They finally released a full length movie this year, i've yet to check it out though.
Anyways - they own all that stuff so unless Ultra Records releases a live New Order dvd we'll never see it.
Also just realized I haven't chimed in yet.... here we go
I was up front dead center, just behind 2 older guys. First off - I couldn't believe they played at 6:40. I hope that was the bands doing because the festival only opened at 4, most people aren't even there by 6:30. I barely made it in by 6 after the traffic, parking, entry line, etc. Miike Snow played after New Order, and then Kraftwerk. Why the hell wouldn't New Order lead into Kraftwerk? As I said - I hope this was Barney saying "lets just play and get the hell out of here".
Anyways - It has to be the smallest crowd New Order has played to in 30 years. Ok, I guess the first few "comeback" shows were probably smaller. It was a small amphitheater and 10 minutes before showtime this is what it looked like

I quite enjoyed the set but it was very short. I was extremely surprised they didn't finish with LWTUA but by then i'm sure they were ready to leave. I also didn't mind because I missed the c'MON! When they came out to open the show Bernards face turned to one of almost disgust, like really? this is it? Maybe that's all in my head but that's the impression I got throughout the show. He seemed to enjoy it more as the show went on at least. Temptation was a fantastic finish.
I had to get the roadie gear crate

Bernard walking out

Really like this one

haha

I saw it mentioned somewhere else but my friend thought he was super hot

and in case you want to check out my Kraftwerk pics and others from the rest of the week go here, it should be public http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151440021375468.831252.684200467&type=3
