I've finally had it with Hooky. He's annoying me for many reasons.

  1. Taking New Order to court
  2. Constantly failing to keep his mouth shut.
  3. Blocking Lost Sirens from release.
  4. Playing Still live. Getting a bit tenuous. Whats next? fucking Les Baines Douche live?! JD Substance Live?!
  5. Seriously thinking that Chappers mimes to his bass parts?!

Nothing against the man himself, i've always thought he was pretty cool, but he really needs to rein it in a bit. I sincerely hope this doesn't end in the courtroom and if it does i know who my moneys on.

So Peter, if you're reading this, we love you, just stop being a dick!!

PETER HOOK: HOW NOT TO RUN A SOLO CAREER

From the same author of The Haçienda, how not to run a club.

Soon in a court close to you! And Ian's autograph (from the author, Hooky) is also available!

Hooky, we also love you, don't be so jealous. You are acting like a boring old man, and Barney as the nice one!

Call him and ask for some tips, or hire a manager.

But you are a great guy, Big Mouth Hooky Start acting like one!

Cheers.

I don't like his impression of Freddie Mercury either, what's next playing the whole 'A night at the opera' album ? :evil4:

But why do some people still love him? Just because he played bass in JD/NO? He's an arsehole and quite possibly always has been.

Also, he's got a beard so can't be trusted.

John Virgo/Noel Edmonds/Harold Shipman...

Nice try but as we know he thinks people on the internet are also dickheads.

In a divorce, people often blame the party that leaves. The others have played it all with far more decorum during this whole affair, but don't assume that they haven't played their part in this breakup. It's all very sad. Selfishly I hope for great music to come out of this from both sides, and want to hear those unreleased tunes as soon as possible. If Hooky is angry, it's not for us to tell him to be quiet; it's his work and his life, so it's up to him to do things how he wants.

What I am finding increasingly tedious is the line about "somebody needs to step in and sort it out, if Rob was still here..." yada yada yada.

You are an adult, you are 56 years old. You are probably by now accountable for your own actions. If you want to call 'the others' to talk things through, go ahead. If you don't want to - fair enough, but don't defer blame on your late, great manager of the band you left.

I'm 24 years old and the idea of 56 year olds needing their former manager (who is not alive) to sort things out to be odd.

We all know that through the years Hooky and Barney have had there fall out's, and we all wonderered who really is the complete annoying twat who so annoys the other one... Sadly we now all know.. And if Hooky has always gone on like this, I am suprised NO lasted so long!!

hooky will go on doing what he's doing because he has a bad streak of defiance in him unfournately.

he's the gadaffi of music because he'll keep going and justify what hes doing when people are coming to see him and paying his way.

if people stopped going to gigs etc you would see some restraint.

I had the same kind of epiphany just before the Paris gig; something snapped inside me and I just thought "what a fucking cock". Must admit that nothing he has done since has made me amend that view...........

Even I have to join in with this, as everyone knows I love hooky's bass, but he does need to stop it with the interviews, OK you're angry and it's good to get the anger out, but it's time to move on, you love doing what you're doing the hte light, and a lot of people are happy to watch that, but also to see the rest of new order playing new order songs, sort your problems out with the band in private.

(Que the "What a ficking hypocrite" comments!)

I've been to The Light performances of the 2 actual Joy Division albums, and they were good although their amps were way too loud for the tiny 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. (Jack, are you reading this?) However, I will skip the Still gig if it comes to town just because it's so much of a repeat of the 2 previous tours as far as material goes. However, if they finally get around to playing Movement, I'll be back. The 3 songs played at Buxton came across very well if they were trying to sell a Movement tour in advance. I haven't and probably won't have the option of seeing the 2011-2012 version of New Order because it is unlikely they will play in D.C. I will go see Hooky again for the music but he should really let his bass do the talking for him and just skip the interviews.

I think when the disagreement was perceived to be between him and Bernard, fans were generally a bit more impartial and open-minded about the situation.

When he started being uncomplimentary about Steve and in particular Gillian from October last year I honestly believe he shot himself in the foot and underestimated the high esteem fans hold her in. Especially as she had been unwell and widely missed from the line-up for a full decade; the backlash was palpable.

Personally, I still do admire Hooky and lots of the music he's made (I rate Music For Pleasure very very highly) but I think his weakness is he can be a bit too reactionary, defiant and wears his heart on his sleeve in every situation. Superb qualities for a fucking cool rock star of course but in other circumstances can be a bit undignified and counter-productive.

As a fan I'd love to read the words "Peter Hook and New Order reached an amicable agreement today" in the near future and that's the end of it all.

Preferably before it hits a court of law and one party loses out... badly.

Really don't want to pick sides because I still admire each member's contributions but it's obvious that Hooky's been making a bad situation worse.

Get the feeling he's so vocal because he wants it played out in the court of public opinion. Because, well, the actual court might not it see his way.

Because you basically refuse to travel beyond your doorstep? When New Order reformed last year the first two gigs were hundreds of miles away from where I lived but I still (and numerous others) made the trip. Nobody really moaned "they're not playing at my local town hall".

They'll never be able to satisfy a continent as large as the USA so fans such as yourself have to make sacrifices such as travelling beyond your city to see them. For an essentially British band such as New Order especially at this stage in the game it's completely unrealistic to expect them to play backwater gig venues just to satisfy parochial fans such as yourself.

Get off your arse and go and see them. If they're not to your liking after the effort then by all means, moan away... I'm sure we'll hear about it.

as an american, i totally agree with this. it isn't 1989 and they aren't about to play 30 or whatever US dates.

on the other hand, i wouldn't be surprised if they do a short US tour in the next 18 months, even just 8 dates or something, and in that case i'd imagine they would play major cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, etc.

and, come on, even if they don't play DC, the drive from DC to NYC is just five hours.... MAN UP!

True, it's just a shame you've not been able to hear a single New Order track so far. Still, at the current rate of albums per year you'll hear Technique in D.C. by... 2019 now he considers it a regular stop. Coincides with the 30th anniversary so get those party poppers ready... :smoking:

Fucking hell even by 2019.... Time to mix up the set list a bit.

The only New Order album I would pay to hear Hooky play would be Movement, and I hope he doesn't even try to play Temptation. That's just not going to work. I will be the first to admit that after Movement it became Barney's Band.

And I did see the original band play both Technique and Republic. Wish I had caught the '87 tour too.

I used to be pretty even in my support for both 'sides'. I didnt bother me what he did with the Hac memorabilia and it didnt bother me that the played JD songs (still doesnt). But my support has been chipped away by the steady assault on the senses from the increasingly bizarre series of press interviews. As we say round here, hes acting like an out and out arsehole.

Its that bad now that, yeah, fuck his images off from the top of the screen.

Watching Hooky on my NO DVDs isnt a nice experience any more, its an uncomfortable one.

But, like i said, he thinks we're all cunts anyway.

I'm already collecting Brownie Points at home and started saving the pennies to hopefully make a couple of dates.

Once a very long time ago I remember reading a feature during which Hooky was described as being "incorrigible", I wasn't quite sure what the word meant so I looked it up.. Here are some definitions..

Bad beyond correction or reform

Impervious to constraints or punishment

Firmly fixed, not easily changed

Not easily swayed or influenced

If everyone in the rock industry was as vocal as unfiltered as Hooky, people would be quick to call them all arseholes too. Tony Wilson made the point once that all musicians are arseholes.

In many respects I'm probably an arsehole too. But to suddenly not want to see Hooky in the DVDs or take his images off the screen is perhaps a little extreme.

To my mind Bernard is something of a businessman/diplomat, Hooky speaks his mind without running his comments through a filter first. So people's impression of Hooky will be worse as a result. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Bernard isn't the nicer guy, perhaps he is, who knows? But when the hell (bar x-f**tor etc) was music all about being the nicer guy? When did we all get so PC? Will we get to "Well, Bernard used to do drugs, and I don't really think that's a good thing, so I can't watch him playing guitar on Love Vigilantes anymore".

Are we really fans of the music or the people?

I'm a big fan of both 'sides' and would also love if Hooky toned down the somewhat random outbursts, but truth be told, when I stood at the front with Hooky playing the bass of Ceremony inches away from me, I couldn't have cared less if he'd just looted the local post office.

Well, perhaps not everyone gets as giddy and starstuck as you do but, going by the title of the thread, some other people actually do think that your behaviour and conduct matters irrespective of your profession.

Nothing to do with being "giddy" or "starstruck". Those who know me well will assure you that I have never come close to either. I think the idea of being starstruck is comical. I've been 'close' to Hooky several times and have never felt in the least excited by his presence or 'starstruck'. However when he is playing, it is the music that excites me, not the man.

My point was simply that enjoying the *music* itself, and being a fan of the *music* itself, as opposed to the personal attributes of the musicians, is more important to me.

For those who are more interested in the 'celebrity gossip' / 'personal lives' aspect of music, fine. Just saying it's not me and that the idea of not watching DVDs because you have an issue with aspects of the personal life of one of the members, seems extreme to me.

Yeah but he is a bass guitarist in a rock band, not the local vicar,I am surprised that people are shocked by his outbursts, he was hardly not going to be a bit peeved when the others reformed without him even if it is partly his own antics that have led to this happening...

They should remix "Lost Sirens" and take Hookys bass off. get Tom to record his own basslines, and then stick it out. New Order don't need kind of pointlessly obstructive behaviour.

Having this as a sticky won't make the Hookster reel it in.

Peter (or Jack if you're the one passing these messages onto your Dad) - STOP NEW ORDER BASHING! You left the group, there was no agreement to split. Go to court and get your royalties then just move onto the next phase in life. Write a book about in a few years if you want, but FFS SHUT UP FOR NOW!

Why is such a poor thread pinned? It's easy to judge him without knowing the whole story. Both Bernard and Hooky have been doing stupid things, and we still don't even know why they split.

Er, well we do know why they split. As Hook stated in one of his recent interviews it was allegedly to do with their song writing partnership irrevocably breaking down:

The final split had been in the offing for a few years before it actually happened

‘The end of the band was about taste- his taste changed and his taste wanted less of me in the sound. He didn’t like the counterpoint of melody, he didn’t want the bass stealing the song. He wanted it like Electronic and that’s the trouble when we got to ‘Sirens Call’- he wanted it like Electronic- normal songs.

Of course, that's just one side - I'm sure there's a lot more to it than just "there's not enough bass in the mix".

I think in hindsight both Bernard and Hooky have said things they now regret. I can see valid points from both sides, but also some very stupid remarks and reasons.

From a personal level having met them both a few times, i've always found Hooky a fantastic person ,and Bernard came across as a bit of a arrogant twat. So I don't think this is all Hooky's fault

Yes, but's the question, why is it his fault it's not coming out?

Someone needs to come up with a realistic close to the truth answer, then maybe make your judgement on that!

"Jack, tell your Dad this, tell your Dad that" replace Hooky's bass lines, you really think this is as easy as all that?

As a co-writer of the material it needs his approval before it can be released, he has withdrawn it for reasons of his own, probably as some kind of leverage in the dispute.

I dont think this should be a pinned thread either. I agree with a lot of what Brian Hypen said. We need to remember it's about the music. Although I dont agree with most of the guff coming from Hooky in these endless new interviews, I do wonder why everyone has to get so excited. As soon as I see a thread starting with a link to a new Hooky interview I can guess the rest: "How can he say this?" "He's lost the plot" etc etc. Can we please stop reacting to EVERY interview he gives? Since the 80's when Hooky (in)famously rebuffed an overly enthusiastic fan who had written to the NO "fan club" (it made Smash Hits magazine, I forget the wording), it's been clear to me that Hooky and the rest havent worried about being anodyne, polite pop stars. So he's bitter and talks a load of hot air in interviews. Big Deal. The only bit that still interests me in this is his apparent blocking of Lost Sirens. If this thread were about that subject and nothing else then yeah, pin it at the top, as we want to hear the tunes, not the interviews (well I do, and I suspect I'm not alone). The Lost Sirens thread is about the MUSIC, so I don't think -1's comments should be dismissed. Lets just remind Hooky that we want to hear the MUSIC. The rest? Who gives a fuck?

For what it's worth, I'm quite ok with it being pinned. This is a discussion forum and this topic is something that merits discussion, like whether or not you agree with its premise, that Hooky is being an idiot. Maybe he's just stirring the pot with a giant wooden spoon and does not care if doing so entails being seen as an idiot or drama queen… obviously I would like to hear Lost Sirens, and I wouldn't mind hearing the audio and video footage of Festival of the Tenth Summer that has apparently surfaced recently, however nobody said it would be easy. It's 26 years since the event, I guess a few more won't make any difference

I agree that it's a subject that should be open to discussion, but I can't see the point in it being pinned, it should be allowed to slide away when interest is lost like everything else, I think there are too many pined items, some have not had any posts for a couple of months, and as for the 'new lyrics' being pinned, it's just stupid, no problem posting it, but pinning is wrong.

If only. Trouble is in most of them he's incredibly offensive to people that many of us like, some may consider them heroes. If A.N. Other Pop Star started calling our band "dickheads" and "twats" we'd be equally pissed off. Hooky doesnt get a free pass because he used to be in said band.

Yes, of course, its about the music and the music from their collective past will always be fantastic and better than anybody else but, whether you agree or not, Hooky and Hooky alone is pissing some fans off.

It's curious cos you've got a few people going "why on earth do you care about what your favourite musicians say in print??" who in turn go on about how pissed off they are a thread has been pinned on an Internet forum.

Erm  a little disparity between the two?

FYI I was a little surprised it got pinned too but only mods can do that.

I pinned it, mainly because I'm starting to find the whole thing rather amusing now, some of the opinions on here are making me spill tea on my laptop, and of course some of them have a greater degree of validity and know what they're talking about. Of course it's not worthy of being pinned, and therein lies the whole point. The argument is pathetic, the behaviour of former band members is pathetic, and the overreactions of some people on here is also rather crap.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, any of it. Whether this thread is pinned or not will have no bearing on the former New Order bass player's perspective. We're kidding ourselves if we think it will. Now if we could find some more evidence of skullduggery, maybe a recording of Bernard not quite synching his vocals on Sirens, then we might be in business!! :evil4:

I'll hold my hand up and say I've been a cunt and said a few stupid things and caused a bit of agro, but for me Hooky was a massive part of the New Order experience, especially live, I wish he would shut up and sort things out with the others and get back where he belongs, if he can do it by April that would be even better! They can even keep chappers so that he can play the low bass while hooky plays the high bass, why not, they kept phil when Gillian returned!

Barney made his fair share of sarcastic Hooky comments at the Melbourne show, which didn't go down that well. Majority of the people who were there, are not into the New Order politics.

Bernard, Steve, and Hooky, wrote, played, collaborated on 'Sirens' and made shared decisions. Isn't it only fair that this remains the case regarding 'Lost Sirens', this is normal procedure you know!

Stop blaming Hooky for it not coming out, someone go and ask Barney why it isn't coming out, what are the reasons?

Van Halen hated David Lee Roth and visa versa, they reformed this year after a huge amount of time. It's nothing new in the rock World, who knows. Yoy can never say never, but I doubt they will ever play together on stage again.

Er, why is it Sumner's responsibility to outline why Hook may have exercised his veto? They're clearly not friends and from the sounds of things communicate solely via legal representation nowadays. To expect Bernard to say to a fan "Well, Hooky did it cos of x, y or z" with an impending court threat looming is not only unrealistic but slightly ludicrous.

Realistically, Hook was doing interviews up until mid-November saying he was content "Lost Sirens" was coming out so he could draw a line under New Order. So there was clearly a period up until December when he was happy for the record to come out under the negotiated terms as they stood at that particular moment in time.

As johnny james alluded to earlier in the thread I think "Lost Sirens" not coming out has little to do with "Lost Sirens" per se, the veto is probably being used to influence the outcome of another segment of negotiation. I'm not making any judgement on that because a) I don't know what it is and b) not for me to say anyway but I think it would be seriously naive to think otherwise because er, they're headed for court.

Meanwhile a big number of fans are going "please give us the record, we'll pay" and no record is forthcoming... Everyone's losing out at the moment; no new music for the fans and no new revenue from said music for the band (Hook included)

People want to know why it's not coming out, and everyone is blaming Hooky because he put a stop to it. Sumner would just say something like "that fucking twat has put a stop to it" and that's it. But why? It's not ludicrous. You are wanting it to be a daytime TV soap opera scenario, he did want it to come out, and it was supposed to draw a line in the sand.

Most people on this forum think 'WFTSC" is crap, I like it a lot and was looking forward to hearing these unreleased tracks.

Why doesn't the person who stopped it explain it then? He allegedly exercised the veto and by now it's well known he did. If that were libellous or incorrect surely it would have been made known by now? I still don't get your point that it is somehow the responsibility of the remainder of the band to ultimately explain his actions. It's like expecting Hooky to justify what Gillian chooses to do; I wouldn't expect him to nor would he.

As Hook himself announced last week court proceedings are about to begin so it's sadly about as far away from soap opera as it could get. Any shrewd lawyer advising either camps will most likely have told their clients to keep their mouths shut as they're about to enter serious and expensive legal territory. As a result, Hook's (so far) silent over this Lost Sirens veto but your assertion that Bernard should be openly discussing why a former bandmate he's about to be taken to court by is making decisions is... ludicrous. Come on mate, it clearly is. Or it is in my world anyway from my experience of how lawyers operate.

So that's right, no-one is going to openly say blah blah, when there is a pending court case. So, it goes back to my point that Hook may have very valid reasons for it not coming out, if so, Sumner is not going to say anything other than "he's a twat".

We are not going to get anywhere here, mean while, unless it's resolved, it won't be released, which is not what everyone wants as far as I'm aware.

I think an awful lot of people on here understand that the blame for the original tensions and subsequent 'split' is not just down to one person... I would certainly be surprised if Barney had been a total angel in all this... Partisan attitudes do however seem to come from how the various parties have conducted themselves in dealing with things... A constant stream of threats, insults, attempts at rewriting history, petty gestures vs. initial silence and a gradual, but relatively diplomatic approach... I guess it's no surprise people are taking sides...

With the threat of court action looming, and several months of Hooky's interviews/sounding off, is it really a surprise that Barney wants to have a pop back? The band had kept a dignified silence for quite a while, now they're playing live again, it's inevitable that some comment will be made... If people aren't into NO politics, does it matter if Barney makes a few snide remarks? It is, after all, all about the music... :thumb:

Regarding the legal case Hooky is taking,I presume it is to have the company set up last April and which became New Order Limited on September 7 2011 which consists of the other 3 original NO members and another person as directors wound up as the setting up of that company is legally a form of oppression against him or is it simply that he wants them not to be allowed to tour using the name New Order?

I have no idea. I don't know a lot about companies, or companies in the UK, but for Hooky to leave the band yet (if this is the case) to want to stay in the New Order company is a bit having it both ways, don't you think? And I don't think this new 'New Order Ltd' can stop him from getting royalties. Not being in the band, and not being in the band's legal 'company' doesn't stop you from getting performance royalties/songwriting royalties, I think. Phil was involved (to some extent) in the songwriting process of WFTSC, yet even Phil is not listed in the company. But I presume Phil gets royalties (even if it's much less than the others) from WFTSC.

If anyone knows more about this issue, please correct me or add info. :read:

Well, I can understand one thing from the past that will work for Hooky as an excuse for leaving New Order in the past, but that wouldn't make much sense nowadays I'm afraid.

It's about Republic. There are only a couple of tracks that have his bass in it! Regret was the only 'original New Order sound' as one of the singles, but the New Order Mix (which was originally considered for the album) hasn't. I would be very upset it that happened to me if I was the bass player. Ofcourse they did a lot of live performances for that tour in which the bass played a major role in it, but the album is the one that stays in the ears of most listeners

It messes with the mind.

I don't think Hooky even drinks any more, and does Bernard still drink beer? :confused2: On a serious note, there would be far less broken friendships (and far less band members leaving) in the world if this is a realistic option (which it isn't). Life isn't that simple, you know?

Maybe that's the whole problem. :beer2:

Hooky used to have problems with alcohol and had alcoholism. I appreciate him quitting drinking because recovery from alcoholism is never easy, from what I hear.

Yeah, because a group of four people in their sixth decades of life can't do this without adult supervision... Well, that's Hooky's dumb argument.

In fairness, New Order's current management appear to be doing a sterling job. More gigs in a single year since 1989, more countries played in a single year since, well, ever, I guess? High profile slots such as the Olympic gig.

Not entirely sure what more they can be doing?

It's 26 years since the event, I guess a few more won't make any difference

Oh, and by the way, Festival of the Tenth summer audio and footage is not with Hooky, so you can't blame him for that not coming out. Do you really think Sumner can be arsed with that project? Doubt it.

not nesessarily stored under his mattress but from the Uncut interview -

Hook also spoke about the recent discovery of Joy Division and New Order master tapes in Jamie Oliver's restaurant in Manchester and revealed that the find had yielded video footage and complete audio recordings of 'Festival Of The Tenth Summer'. 'Festival Of The Tenth Summer' ran in the summer of 1986 and was given to celebrate Manchester. It featured a gig at the city's GMEX venue with performances from the likes of The Smiths, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Fall. Hook added that due to his ongoing situation with New Order, it was unlikely the material from the festival would be released. Speaking about this, Hook said: "The greatest thing we found in Jamie Oliver's was actually 'The Tenth Summer' tapes. But because we've now fallen out and there's no communication between us, we're not going to be able to do anything with them, which is sad and so they're stuck in limbo. But there's video footage and the complete audio recordings of all the bands, Echo And The Bunnymen, Smiths, Buzzcocks, New Order. It would make a great record."

The Jamie Oliver situation turned out to be fake though. :read:

It's not really Van Halen : the bass player from 1977-2006 wasn't even asked to be part of it, and replaced by the geetarists son (who wasn't even born when DLR was first in the band!).

When the bank closed years ago, the vaults were still full, that is true (the bank didn't leave all the stuff there, which was just bullshit), It's also true that there were JD/NO master material there and Festival of the tenth summer audio/video masters there. But this is going back years ago, not last month.

Yes, that is true, but Eddie and Alex hate David and so on....

Its that bad now that, yeah, fuck his images off from the top of the screen.

Watching Hooky on my NO DVDs isnt a nice experience any more, its an uncomfortable one.

But, like i said, he thinks we're all cunts anyway.

Well I'm just about to remove hooky's photo from my low-life CD and commission a remastering of Brotherhood with all of Hooky's bass parts removed

Most of the show was broadcast on radio, easily available, but not available as a full soundoard as far as I know.

Well said. And keeping everybody happy which they seem to be doing is no easy task. As a stand alone year, with no recording costs to recoop, this may end up being one of their most profitable 12 months yet. They've still got Hooky chucking crap over the garden fence but that's impossible to control. Given the distractions and irritations that must have caused over the last few years they're doing a great job.

Good point about the number of countries...in the space of 12 months they will have visited all their major territories - Europe, Japan, Australia, NZ, South America and North America, don't think they've ever done that before. Being offered gigs in countries you've never played before like Chile and Serbia when your 30+ years deep into a career in an industry that's renowned for short shelf-life isn't too bad going.

I'm not sure how different things are now to how they've been for some time, just that now we have the internet to facilitate information, quotes and all kinds of shite getting known much more quickly. Hooky's always been the gobby heart on the sleeve type who shoots from the hip and doesn't worry about the consequences, whereas Bernard has always resisted the temptation to wash his dirty laundry in public, but conducts his business in private. Doesn't make either of them right or wrong, Bernard's been steadily gathering support from those who have to choose a side merely by keeping his trap shut, something Hooky will never be able to do. That doesn't mean Bernard's manipulation of the band and the current situation is any more right than Hooky's indignation.

They're as bad as one another, chalk and cheese, and that difference is what created the magic in the first place.

agreed again, it's the struggle between the two that made them great, they bounce off each other, sometimes positively, sometimes negatively, hope the get back to being positive some day.

you may not like the music but it was similar between lennon & mccartney, it wasn't so much freindship that made them write great songs, it was rivalry.

Why wouldn't we like the Beatles? Would it be uncool of me to admit that on NOOL?

Not at all, I love them I just know some people don't but I was referring to the problems within the band making them better rather than their music.
