Be A Rebel

Nonplussed by the two new remixes. As mentioned, one samples Blue Monday, the other has a bit of Bizarre Love Triangle 12" intro in there. Always takes me out of the mix/track when bits of other songs crop up.

The Bernard Outlaw win is virtually identital to the digital Renegade mix, just with the piano riff from the original single mix added to the chorus and the odd whizzy sound effect. More of an alternate take than a different mix, so bit of a pointless release. So now I make it we have six different versions of Bernard's Remix!

Hoping for better mixes in part two!

I have a reputation to maintain. Wanking contest. I came first hands down by a long shot, beating off some stiff competition. I think I jerked off to Gillian once, but in those days I'd grab anything with my free hand. Not the best session, partly cos she has the charisma of a mongoose, mainly cos I was scared the pause function would go off just before me and I'd splatter Hooky's beard. I haven't listened to Mucous Complete for a while. The last thing I heard was of course Be A Rebel and the last thing I bought was probably MILF. Great to hear them finally digging out some gems instead of the usual formula. Can't be arsed with all the other live CDs, but as I said before, you don't have to buy anything, what with YouTube and crud like International. Last wankend I saw One of Hooky's live albums and honestly, what's the point? The Light are a great night out but why shell out for carbon copies with shit vocals? Interesting too that the Jiz Coldman collaboration namechecks JD and not NO, whose music was, according to Hooky, far stronger. Have fun.

Thanks for heads up on these, D.Total playing time of the 3 new mixes was around 18 minutes which just happened to be about how long my drive to work is , so i got through them on the journey this morn.Yep, glad i'm not the only one who spotted a split second of BLT in one of the mixes.Some good moments in the first 2 mixes but like Debaser said, the choral thing from BM - could have done without yet again.And yes Bernard's vocal seemed high on one of the mixes.On Bernard's Outlaw mix there's only one or two bits added on from his renegade mix.

Love Paul Woolford's mix by a mile. It feels like a classic New Order 12". And I'm not fussed by the little snare-skip or reverse orchestra hit lifted from Bizarre Love Triangle...because at least it's not Blue Monday.

I'm actually surprised they've never done a Bizarre Love Triangle ['year] 12", but they'd be hard pressed to improve on Richard X's mix from 2005.

Liking a lot the Paul Woolford and Maceo Plex mixes on more listening. The first 20 seconds or so of the Maceo Plex full length mix at first reminded me a little of As You Said by JD. Then later it goes a bit Born Slippy beat but slower. Born Slippy meets that Kraftwerk/BM choral sound .

neither one is very good. the maceo one is like a poormans megamix, with some overused elements in it. the paul woolford mix doesn't bring anything new to the song, and is too basic to improve over the new order mixes.

I thought the same. I didn’t like the remixes at all.

You can't polish a turd can you? OK, I'm exagerating, Be a Rebel is a decent song not a turd but it isn't great. The Maceo Plex remix is really bad to my ears. Won't listen to it twice for sure. I'll probably give Paul Woolford's a second chance but I don't expect it to charm me. In the end Bernard's Outlaw mix is the most interesting but not great either.

I'm just listening. The Paul Woolford mix is just basically "Looking For Me" vs "Be A Rebel" with a bit of mixing with a few sound alike samples from BLT thrown in. Doesn't seem like much effort was put into it. The Maceo Plex remix is almost bordering on an industrial dance version with tinges of Blue Monday. Not sure how good it would work on the dancefloor though. Going to have to listen to these a few times but the original is still my favourite, but again that's the one I've listened to most. Not sure these mixes are going to sway my opinion though.

Just read this on the Mute Records site: "Bernard Sumner has revisited his earlier ‘Be A Rebel’ remixes and combined the best into his Outlaw mix."

So, I'm guessing Barney's just been a bit indecisive on this remix and kept tweaking after it was sent for vinyl press, and again after its first digital release. Does that mean he considers the Outlaw mix the final, definitive version?

I actually like the second of the three variants best (i.e. the Renegade mix on the first digital release), as the "Hooky" guitar is a nice addition, and it has more space in the mix than the Outlaw version, which is beginning to sound more crowded now - although the Outlaw mix does have a warmer bottom end/bass to it than the digital Renegade Mix.

Wonder which of Bernard's mixes will feature on any CD single that might eventually get released?

Is this one of the fan-made mixes, which has a 'Hooky-style' bass-line? Hence the term 'parallel universe', i.e. if Hooky was still in the band.

No. It popped up on YouTube about 48 hours after Be A Rebel was shared back in September.

Completist request: The "Maceo Plex Remix Edit" seems to be YouTube-only right now.

Anyone found a legit digital source for purchase? Ripping from YouTube is a last resort for me.

No guarantees this would make it onto any CD release - if that ever sees the light of day.

Wow last Friday’s Pete Tong show on BBC Radio 1 which is probably one of the biggest dance shows which people listen to all over the world, the first song he played was the Be A Rebel (Paul Woolford Remix)

Hope the remix and the song gets good exposure

The house piano sounded upfront in that mix, vocals were all chopped up, and there were more vocoder-only parts than the Woolford remix edit.
