New Order Oddities (or New Orderties, if you like)

here's the first part of the technique tourbook.

the pages are all separate, so you can look at individual pages,

but here's the first 2 when open.

they are all oversized, and printed on excellent quality glossy paper, and excellent ink which hasn't faded after all these years..

here's the front pages, note they are out of order, because the back of the pages, are in different order to match up when its opened. confusing?

I bought the tourbook at uni circa 96. Has anyone else whiled away a bored afternoon by jerking off to the Round and Round video?

Doh, another item I forgot I have until someone mentions it. My copy battered and faded now but still in one piece. Think it was mentioned in NME in around September 1989 and an address you could send a cheque to and request a copy which I promptly did.

Always thought photo #14 was and is weird. I guess it’s Hooky but looks nothing like him

hmmm, was your copy out in the open or in lighted areas.

almost everything i have is stored in plastic tubs from the time i got them.

i'm just opening things up after 30 plus years. also, besides looking at it a few times, and scanning it, i've never touched it again until now.

i guess the colors can fade, how are the other pages, did they fade also?

i got mine from the tour, i never buy tshirts, but i love tourbooks.

more information about the technique tourbook:

"Rare ‘tour book’/ one-off magazine/ lookbook made for New Order’s US Technique tour with photographs of the band plus Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, Martin Hannett etc, all by Donald Christie. 24 numbered plates of Saville’s art- work, captioned with enigmatic texts and accompanied by a # such as “#HowCoolIsColdness” and as such invent-ing ‘hashtagging’ in the process. Still life images such as a blooming peony and a bust of Louis XIV, as well as the iconic ‘Dichromat’ cherub, are interspersed with portraits of the band. The book was never properly distributed, as it was not published in time for the tour because Saville was deliberating over the design. Saville remarked recent- ly that: “Most of them weren’t shipped and remained in a basement in Manchester. Factory was gone within three to four years, so who knows what happened to them. Maybe they were thrown away, maybe someone took them home.” (ShowStudio, interview, 2016)."

How Cool Is Coldness is quoted in NOStory too. Invented hashtags? In the words of Sylvia Plath, bollocks.

Saville invented hashtagging? Lol. No. Just no.

In the tour book the hash/number symbol precedes the number of the photo, not the quote FFS! There’s a space between the hash symbol/number and the quote. The thing of putting a hash/ number symbol ( actually the name for the symbol is Octothorpe, look it up) before a number is something that’s been around forever hasn’t it???!!

The # symbol has meant "number" or "pound" (in the U.S.) since 1850. It only came to be a "hashtag" with the rise of social media in 2007.

In the tour book, the symbol is paired with the image number, not the quote. It's ridiculous to think Saville or the like invented hashtags in 1989.

#14 is not Hook. It's one of their road crew testing a microphone.

I bought my first copy through eBay in 1998. It's still crisp, and the fluorescent orange hasn't faded.

^ Ooh I’ve never heard of or seen that flexi for the 87 US tour. Great find. That’s a rare one that. 3 tracks on one side of a 7” flexi though? Dread to think what the sound quality is like. Still, a great rare one to own I should think.

According to Discogs it's a 9" flexi - never seen one of those before, but if it really has the Substance CD version of Shame of the Nation on it - then that's nearly 8 minutes on it's own!

The Bunnymen track is 4 minutes and I don't know the GLJ song at all, but even if it's 3 minutes, that's still 15 minutes of music on a 9" flexi..ouch

I read about it in the Record Mirror double article. The sound quality Is irrelevant as you wouldn't wanna play anyway cos you'd ruin it and you'd have the actual material in high quality on the 'proper' issue anyway.

I believe it was the 7" edit. Although I might be confusing it with the 3X12" promo of the bands for the same tour. That came in a sleeve fitting all 3 that I would also store my flexi inside. Got rid of my vinyl ages ago so can't confirm.

Gave the (uncredited) As You Said on the Komakino/Incubation 7” flexi a spin the other night. On my recently bought expensive headphones I swear I could i hear Komakino from the other side playing ( backwards?) . Is that possible??!!!...

Oh boy this is too much. Oh boy they're going at it again.

Five years later, I'm still surprised with Music Complete... after the original bassist departure and Never Cry Another Tear (Sumner's weakest effort by far IMHO) I was expecting catastrophe. But it still sounds really fresh, and Academic is up there with the classics.... well, almost.

I could easily trade Superheated for Be a Rebel, mind you.

....and yeah, I do enjoy it more than WFTSC.

Was it ever confirmed whether the yellow promo version ever truly existed at all? I saw a picture of one years ago but never glimpsed one in the wild...

Had both back in the day and owner of the record store I worked at said Label Rep told him the blue version was rarer. Never saw any evidence to back this up.

I do recall that although the puffy version was given it's own product number unique to that of the standard U.S. release. But if you look at the manufacturer numbers engraved on the disc, it has the standard product number and the top of the disc is just painted over a standard one.

Probably referring to this one. Always wondered about it myself as I've never seen one for sale despite years of looking.

Just a hunch, but it's very hard to take an accurate photo of fluorescent orange, and it wouldn't make sense to emulate the orange inflatable ring on the cover by creating a yellow puffy sleeve. I think it's either a photo that hasn't been color-corrected, or it's sun damage, but not actually yellow.

huh? those are totally different colors. there's no way orange would show up as yellow.

funny thing, i ordered the blue ink republic, and the guy sent me pictures, and they showed up as silver, but he insisted they were blue.

sure enough, when it showed up, it was blue.
