Introductions

Personally, I find the intros to certain New Order songs to be the highlight of the record. Has any mouse got any faves?

Of the 2 million I could have picked.. mine are:

State of the Nation (fucking great sound) The Perfect Kiss 12" (such a build up.. its unfair) Procession (sends shiver up my spinal coloumn)

and so on. In a strange twist of fate, I find the 'intro' raw energy of the 'Rock n' Shove the Shovels' song of Getting my Things Ready to be a classic... very dirty and beefy like beef jerkin.

Perhaps the song 'Running Gene Wilder' has a suitably unassuming intro worthy of note.

Hmm... Lots to choose from indeed...

This sudden and unexpected outpouring of praise for Timbuktu, Huntsy, just about leaves me speechless.

I was thinking about this last night - in terms of what I would really like them to open with tonight (but of course they won't). Procession would be great, that shimmering synth build-up, or maybe even 60mph. Most of my favourite gigs seem to have opened with Sooner Than You Think or Sunrise though. Sunrise gets my vote.

Yes, it's incurable, Huntsy. Once you get it it never goes away. But those who have it don't complain. They actually prefer their infected state.

the 12" version of 1963 has the best intro ever, the elctronic chords remind me of Manchester, and growing up in that city. I guess it just means a lot to me.

By the way, Huntsy, I believe we had an unfinished conversation on the composition, preparation, and naming of Pringles. Are you recalling of all that stuffing?

I think I was agreeing with you that in the future, our children may say 'do you want to go to the shops to buy a bag of pringles' instead of 'bag of crisps or chips'.

Crisps have been the long-standing name of, e rm, crisps in the UK for over one million years b.c. so for pringles to change all that, well, it would be a very powerful day for us all. I have been to the states and noticed that your shops are filled with odd 'sacks' of chips i.e. in the UK our bag is about 25grams whereas your sacks contain about 1Kg. Couldn't for the life of me find a bag that could be easily digestible within a couple of minutes. Perhaps the small (or standard UK bags) were outlawed by the US fatty contingent?

Well, you're right, Pitch.

Sunrise is a great song, they'll never play it live though. Its like at the Glasgow gig on Sunday where the guy behind me shouted for Love Vigilantes after every bloody song. Of course, I knew it wasn't on the set-list but he was a big bloke so I didn't want to upset him.

PS - on the crisps thread of earlier, I'm afraid Pringles must bow down before the might of McCoys. Pringles pop, McCoys rock.

To my eternal pride, I got a shout-out right once, and was "credited" by Hooky !

Birmingham Tower Ballroom 86, if you have the gig you can hear someone shout out "Broken Promise". Hooky says "someone got it right, bastards been cheating!" -and promptly launched into the bass intro. I hadn't seen the set, I was just hoping. I suppose law of averages has to come into it every so often, though in my defence it wasn't as though they'd played the night before so it was a perm 12 from 18 scenario like we used to get on alternate nights.

There are so many things to say about chips, crisps, and Pringles. We do actually have very small bags of potato chips, but they are not sold everywhere. The smallest bags are about 50 cents per bag.

Far more interesting is the composition of Pringles as compared to potato chips. Am I hallucinating in thinking that some U.S. federal agency (F.D.A.?) would not have allowed Pringles to call themselves "potato chips" because they are made from ground up potato flakes (and corn meal to boot!) rather than intact potato slices?

Is the composition of Pringles part of their appeal for you Huntsy? What about the fact that each one is perfectly formed and shaped exactly the same as every other? This characteristic is of course inextricably tied to the composition factor. What about the fact that they come in a tube, rather than a bag? So many questions, so little time.

Apart from all other great intros mentioned, I'd like to bring Thieves Like Us to attention. It has a lovely intro. And a really long one too.

Can't say fairer than that! Other contenders: "Your Silent Face"; "Vanishing Point" ; "Regret" ; "Dreams Never End" ; "Ceremony" (green sleeve 12").

Now How about New Order Endings?

The top contender HAS GOT TO BE "The Perfect Kiss" ( 12" mix ): wow what a fucking colossal orgasm of fuck off synthesised wall of sound that has got to be.....OooooH gives me goosebumps every time.!!!!!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the intro to 5 8 6!! The greatest intro of any song EVER never mind just New Order. The way the bleakness gives way to the majestic footstomping beats is pure aural pleasure, especially late at night or in an enclosed echoing space!!

I can't believe I actually forgot that!! I don't know which I like best though, the one on Peel Sessions or the one on PCL. I think it has to be the PCL version..
