It has taken me a few days to respond to this post, as I have been in shock!

We clearly have VERY different tastes in men, which is fine, at least we'd never have to fight over them!

Simon Le Bon is a god amongst men...have you seen the new Gap ads with him and Nick Rhodes on them? He is a truely gorgeous specimin. And as for Barney....as nature intended... i should be so lucky...

Well, I suppose history has not looked kindly at Sigue Sigue Sputnik, has it? Luckily I only bought a promo copy of their album, but I suppose I keep it around as an example to myself in the what-in-the-hell-were-you-thinking department. It's actually not one I play anymore, but I did play it at least three times back in the day.

As far as something modern, even though I had heard both versions by Ednaswap beforehand, I still really like Torn by Natalie Imbruglia.

simon and nick in a gap ad!? well wonders never cease.. actually i read an interview with good old si a few years back where he waffled on and on about just how virile he is and how many women hed had back in durans(thankfully brief)heyday. it was very amusing particularly the bit where he commented on his penchant for supermodels, because groupies were just "so spandau".smug bastard. as for barney, i certainly would enjoy shagging him senseless, if by some slip in the space-time continuum i was miraculously transported back 15 years in time...

Dont Simon, you'll make me damp!!!

Duran Duran are still one of the greatest bands ever to come out of the UK. Simon Le Bon is a total love god, and I personally would shag him senseless... (my mate Cazza agrees)

As for the supermodels part.... no shit sherlock? Simon le Bon shagging models, NEVER i refuse to believe it! Well, ive had him (in a bus shelter whilst holding a bag of chips co-incidentally) and Im actually Thora Hird, so the supermodel myth is exactly that........He likes any shape, any size, and from what my "insiders" tell me...any sex!

Barney is a wonderful man, fuck going back in time, Id take him right now whilst im typing), and in the future...and I wouldnt even make him pay for the chips...

Muffy, my main man, Its a duran debate, help me out here darling...

While at work last night, and getting all of our boxed cassettes loaded away (yes, Target is eliminating that media) I came across what quite possibly was the crappiest band I have ever had the distinct displeasure of hearing...Aldo Nova...

whats so fucking great about duran duran? so what if theyve sold a lot of records and are tenacious; i could say the same thing about ub40. ive heard a lot of their records and frankly they are a pile of cack. style over substance is all theyve ever amounted to, and a pretty naff style at that, with their fucking frilly shirts and rolled up jacket sleeves, not to mention the lipgloss and cravats. as for simon`s sex appeal, well there must have been a real dirth of talent in the 1980s pop scene;how else could such a total munter be considered sexy.

Congratulations Sarah on your first post, and welcome to NewOrder Land, the home of witty, jovial times where hating The Lightning Seeds is a wise move.(especially as that tosser Ian Broudie ripped off Hooky's bass line of Love Vigilantes.) What's wrong with The Offspring you ask. Not a wise move as I can predict much laughter and posting of unflattering comments in future posts. But have faith, and much merryment will ensue!! ;)

Oh my, a bitter and twisted NME reader and wannabe music critic if ever there was one. Your comments suggest that your opinions are based upon Duran's commercial heyday, a period which accounts for less than 30% of their career output and during which it was fashionable to knock bands who didn't vocally subscribe to a left wing political ethos or sing about depression filled afternoons in a basement bedsit. Its so refreshing (NOT!) to see all the old clichéd critiques of Duran Duran being recycled yet again, obviously by someone who took all the image bullshit seriously and never stopped to think that the band might actually be taking the piss.

Duran would not have been around for over 20 years if they were truly a case of style over substance. Sure, image and style sell records, and Duran have exploited that to full effect (and who can blame them?) but even the anti-hero darlings of the 'trendy non-commercial' music scene, so beloved by the critics, have an army of stylists and image consultants to help maintain their apparent air of 'anti-establishment disrespectability'.

Nevertheless, if you take the trouble to actually listen to the music of Duran Duran…not just the singles from the early 80s, but tracks from ALL their albums, you will be met by a band who have explored a myriad of musical styles, from hard edged thrashy rock through to funk pop as well as the sort of experimental sounds and styles that later brought accolades and acclaim for the likes of U2 and Depeche Mode. You should try listening to "Medazzaland", Duran's 1997 album. It shines much brighter than their early 80's lipgloss.

Their image in the early 80's was at the time ground-breaking. Duran Duran became synonymous with the New Romantic movement, which influenced not just fashion, but music too. Nick Rhodes was (and still is) considered to be at the forefront of British style. Would GAP seriously consider using both him and SLB as part of their new poster campaign if they still dressed like Crockett and Tubbs??? I dont think so! Personally I dont wear my ra-ra skirt and leg warmers anymore. In the same way New Order dont wear the same clothes they did in 1981, neither to Duran, Ive moved on, New Order have moved on and so have Duran, perhaps you should too?

You should also look at the bands who count Duran as being amongst their influences, such as Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, Sugar Ray, Garbage and Pulp to name but a few. A few years back Simon Le Bon joined the Pumpkins on stage at Brixton to sing a Duran track called "Nightboat". And seeing as Billy Corgan is so highly respected by New Order, surely his tastes and opinions of music can't be "a pile of cack".

Barney himself says that one of his influences was Chic. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards worked closely with Duran for many years (there is speculation at the moment that they may move to Nile Rogers' label). Nile also rates them as one of the rawest talents in the business. So if Barney respects Chic and Chic respect Duran.... doesn't that tell you something??

As for Simon Le Bon himself, the fact that he has remained married to Yasmin, who is universally regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, for the past 16 years suggests to me, that perhaps after all is isnt the "total munter" you appear to think he is.

So, in short, just read a few chapters of the book instead of judging it by its cover.

You never know...you might actually like it and want to buy the sequel.

Neil Diamond, now there's a class act! So long as there are old ladies who just don't get the Beatles and understand this new-fangled thing called "rock and roll" (obviously sexual, and none too respectful of marriage, I'll bet!), Neil Diamond will have an audience. Cracklin' Rose......

OMG I didn't know that there were any Spandau Ballet fans still around! Their fans used to make these type of comments 20 years ago! Velocity Girl I think it is very honourable for you to carry the torch and wave the "gold" Spandau flag for the Islington boys. Personally, they got on my wick!

I have to agree with the Duranie types here though! Although they never quite achieved the kudos of "singing it for Ing-ger-land, Eng-ger-land!" They did manage to win a number of awards, including a few Ivor Norvellos. Their music has been used to advertise everything from cars to televisions, even burgers for christ sake! They have recorded some cracking film scores including the biggest selling Bond theme ever! and they still manage to keep a tongue-in-cheek attitude to the industry!

Duran Duran have worked with some of the most respected musicians in the world (as well as the ones previously mentioned) Sting, Pavarotti, David Gilmour, Robert Palmer and Herbie Hancock also spring to mind, to name but a few.

Regarding their choice of clothes, frankly I couldn't give a shit, I don't have to listen to them, I buy my CD's because of the music and not because the shirts (or blouses in Nick Rhodes case) are really cool! (even though I would agree they have had some pretty flash togs over the years.) I guess its a case of "Styles change, Style doesn't" where Duran Duran are concerned.

I would like to throw in my third top band besides DD and NO.....SUEDE!....fucking love 'em! They emerged in the early 90's so most of you will have heard of them!

All bands have their bad moments;

If Barney can sing "I got thirsty for a beer, then I had to go to sea, but the sea was very rough, It made me feel sick, but I like that kind of stuff, it beats arithmetic" why can't Simon sing "My head is full of chopstick, I don,t like it!" or Brett whine "I was born as a pantomime horse"

Your Spandau blokes should stick to acting, they are getting quite good at it now, they've been doing it since the early eighties anyway (but they could never quite be Duran Duran!)

One last thing, you refer to Duran Duran as "tenacious", Too bloody right! Good one girl!
