I was just thinking that, while I did a poll way back when about sketch comedy shows, I realized it wasn't any fun unless I asked you to choose between the two preeminent examples, Monty Python's Flying Circus and Saturday Night Live. So here it is, the ultimate poll: I predict either a pretty even split, a more balanced distribution of votes, or a lot of "but what about MadTV?" idiots....:nonono:

Who I vote for: Even though I have a warm place in my heart for the Phil Hartman Era (1986-1994), and was willing to believe that things were improving around the time Will Ferrel joined the cast, I have to vote MPFC. They have more timeless comedy, with less reliance on "will the audience get the joke" or targeting 15-minute celebrities of current times. MPFC for me, baby! :thumb:

I predict WAY skewed results for Python. SNL Has had some great moments over the years, but sometimes, they just suck. Speaking of which, Trev, remember the Will Ferrell sketch about the guy doing yoga?

Although the Best of Dana Carvey, Chris Farely, and Phil Hartman tapes are often in my VCR, Python is classic. I grew up on SNL (those mid-90's years with Hartman, Farley, Sandler, Nealon, et al.), but Python will always be closer to my heart.

I bet Will's mouth got a little tired after that one; at least he got enough protein in his diet for him to stay alive :D

EASILY Monty Python. Not that SNL is a bad show, mind you.

Yeah, sometimes you are. Sometimes SNL was hilarious. Depends on the cast and year.

No real question. Python rules.

agreed. No contest - Python wins.

What would have been interesting is Monty Python versus early SNL. The Pythons, as a group, never really declined in overall quality, whereas SNL did.

I agree. SNL used to be excellent - still not as good as the Pythons, mind you - but awesome all the same. Now it's complete and utter crap.

looks pretty clear that Pythons lord over SNL

Python, hands down. The original SNL cast, though, was awesome.

Early SNL looks painfully dated to me-- not even funny, really. I think some of the later seasons were a hell of a lot better. Being American, it's imposible for me to tell-- does early Python seem timeless or dated to you Brits?

Modern SNL is terminally unfunny. The older SNL was pretty good. I can't remember Monty Python though, it's been yonks for me. So I am unable to vote either way.

BBC America is running old Benny Hill episodes lately. Classic hands down winner.

some SNL from '75-'80 = cool. SNL with eddie murphy = great. SNL from about 88-92 = awesome. SNL skits with will ferrell = fun. monty python = awesome.

so it depends on the SNL era, really.
