  1. Best Bit - subconciously, you find yourself singing along to it. At least, I did when this first came out. Doubt it would get an airing now, mind. Best last two lines to close a New Order album though.
  2. Worst Bit - it's a bit, well, flimsy. And corny. And references to Jesus make me squirm. I think the title's dreadful too.
  3. Why... I'm indifferent. Don't like it or loathe it.
  4. Percentage rating - 40%
  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? To stop dancing. ;)

  1. Best bit - fairly pleasant tune
  2. Worst bit - cheesy Jeezy lyric, and the desperately poor last line. If this song is about Steve and Gillian's ill daughter, why the hell did Barney have to tarnish it with yet another drug reference? Completely scuppers what could have been quite a touching song.
  3. Love/hate - see above
  4. Percentage - 40%....scrapes into the worst 10 thanks to the last line
  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? - anything I say will be seen as a poultry excuse, so I won't bother

  1. Best bit - when it's finished
  2. Worst bit - when it's playing
  3. Love/hate - hate
  4. Percentage - quite low
  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? - you could as well consider that it is the road that crossed the chicken; it's only a question of relativity. More seriously, it must be because they didn't play Run Wild on the other side.

  1. Best Bit When it ends.

  2. Worst Bit When it starts.

  3. Why... The mighty ROCK THE SHACK totally towers over this one. Get Ready is pretty much downhill in the last few tracks, IMO (no flames please). I've only listened to it the first coupla times I played the LP, so I'll probably come back to it in a while and think it's wonderful though...

  4. Percentage rating Ooooh - I'll be generous and go for 15%

  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get the elephants out of the fridge.

I like Barney's way of singing in this song.

  1. Worst Bit

Reference to Jesus makes him look like Bono (mmmhh do we have a shuddering smiley?)

Cos' he was a free range chicken. Moral of the story: Keep your chicken inside their coops, children and you could save motorists' lives.

Sorry, not to be a nitpicker...that instrument Barney plays is called a melodeon (sp?). He has played it in other songs, too:

Love Vigilantes Hurt In A Lonely Place

Okay, I'll shut up now. :)

1 It's slow and gracious, unlike the rest of the album, it's also a very sentimental set of lyrics from Steve. 2 it's not fast and furious:D 3 it's ok 4 75% 5 cos Depeche Mode were busking on the same side of the road as him.

Best bit is the tune and Barney's singing.

Another vote for the worst bit of the song being the last line.

Good change of pace, but I don't play this song that often.

The chicken crossed the road to avoid the KFC franchise.

Just found this following post in a newsgroup thread tonight; how appropriate.

GEORGE W. BUSH: I don't think I should have to answer that question.

AL GORE: I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people.

RALPH NADER: The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road had been polluted by unchecked industrialist greed. The chicken did not reach the unspoiled habitat on the other side of the road because it was crushed by the wheels of a gas-guzzling SUV.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal a job from a decent, hard-working American.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but I'll bet it was getting a government grant to cross the road, and I'll bet someone out there is already forming a support group to help chickens with crossing-the-road syndrome. Can you believe this? How much more of this can real Americans take? Chickens crossing the road paid for by their tax dollars, and when I say tax dollars, I'm talking about YOUR money, money the government took from you to build roads for chickens to cross.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the farmer's market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave ME any insider information!!

JERRY FALWELL: Because the chicken was gay! Isn't it obvious? Can't you people see the plain truth in front of your face? The chicken was going to the "other side." That's what they call it - the "other side." Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay! And, if you eat that chicken, YOU will become gay too!! I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like "the other side."

DR. SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes! The chicken crossed the road, But why it crossed, I've not been told!

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die. In the rain. Alone.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.: I envision a world where ALL chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question!

GRANDPA: In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart-warming story of how it overcame a serious case of molting, and went on to finally accomplish its life-long dream of crossing the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the little chickens crossing roads in peace!

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

KARL MARX: It was a historical inevitability.

SADDAM HUSSEIN: This was an unprovoked act of rebellion, and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it.

VOLTAIRE: I may not agree with what the chicken did, but I will defend to the death its right to do it.

RONALD REAGAN: What chicken?

CAPTAIN KIRK: To boldly go where no chicken has gone before.

FOX MULDER: You saw it cross the road with your own eyes! How many more chickens do you have to see cross the road before you will believe it?

SIGMUND FREUD: The fact that you are even at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road at all reveals your underlying sexual insecurity.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook - and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

BILL CLINTON: I did NOT cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by "chicken"? Could you define "chicken", please?

THE BIBLE: And God came down from the heavens, and He said unto the chicken, "Thou shalt cross the road." And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing.

COLONEL SANDERS: I missed one?

  1. it's different from what NO usually writes...i could never imagine them trying to go acoustic for anything. not a bad effort, nice and pleasent.
  2. um...well the lyrics are a little cliched. like the last line about getting high until you die or something. sounded sentimental and didn't suit the rest of the song.
  3. i don't hate this song and i appreciate their effort to do something different. it beats slow jam anyday.

Why do you say Steve, Shug? Have I missed something or is it in a part of the booklet I have not read yet? BTW I am not being ironic or anything.

Most of the song is about Steve and Gillian's daughter, apparently written by Steve. No prizes for guessing who wrote the last line though.

Is that a guess based on the subject or have they say so? Ther was another mention the other day about Steve having a hand at lyrics in Brotherhood, I think. This is interesting.

Eh? You sure about this Shuglet? When did Steve start writing New Order lyrics?

I thought the original line was that Barney had written a track about one of his children going through an illness, but then someone here pointed out that one of the Morris clan was ill, so the presumption was that Barney had written a song about their daughter. So are we now assuming that Steve wrote the whole track for his daughter, but Barney tagged on the last 2 lines just to antagonise the PC brigade?

All sounds a bit far-fetched to me. . :skeptic:

In reply to Budvar, Timbo and Big Al about the lyrics.......

I could possibly be wrong:nod: You's all know what my memory is like:lol: But I coulda swore that Steve wrote the lyrics for Grace, I WAS sure about this until Jarvo mentioned Barney throwing in the last two lines.....now I'm completely confused! If I get a chance tonight, I'll dig out all the reviews and interviews for Get Ready, to get to the bottom of this:thumb:

    Take your pick from these:

SAEED AL SAHAF - Iraqi Head of Information The chicken did not cross the road. This is a complete fabrication. We do not even have a chicken.

GEORGE W BUSH We don't care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either for us or against us. There is no middle ground.

COLIN POWELL Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

TONY BLAIR I agree with George.

HANS BLIX We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

DR SEUSS Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

MARTIN LUTHER KING I envision a world where all chickens will be free to crossroads without having their motives called into question.

I'm surprised at the negativity towards this song. I think it's lovely. Sure, it's sentimental, but what's wrong with that?

Best bit - "You're the kind of person/that I always wanted to be with/you're really cool/and you always say the right things to me .....magical

Worst bit - er, to be honest, I can't think of anything. OK, if I'm pushed the last line (but not the second last line).

Why? - cos the line I quote above summed up exactly how I felt about the women I loved at the time.

Percentage - 95 (and I do mean that)

Best bit: All of it - I love the lyrics (except the last line, but I dont care) and the music complements it perfectly; if only it could go on forever. . .

this song expresses perfectly how I feel about my own children; if ever a song could bring a tear to my eye, this would be it. Now i'll go & make those wonderfull kids some dinner . . . CHICKEN anyone?:evil4:

  1. Best bit - The melodica. Gorgeous, yearning...perfect.

  2. Worst bit - The final two lines. Nearly wrecks it all for me.

  3. Why? - It has the warmth that's in such short supply on latter New Order albums, and the strings? Heartbreaking. The lyrics (for the most part) are really pretty and simple. Best thing on a rather muddled LP.

  4. Rating - 93%

  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? - No idea. I didn't even realize that roads had feelings!

  1. Best bit - The bassline underneath the melodica. Tender and angry at the same time.

  2. Worst bit - I wouldn't have mentioned Jesus/Jehova myself, and the reference to getting high doesn't really fit with the mood of the rest of the lyrics.

  3. Why? - I had no idea that Steve wrote the words, so assumed it was one of Barneys classic odes to loss. Excellent track to close to the album, and love the Osborne mix too.

  4. Rating - 90% - get rid of Jehova and change the last two lines and you have perfection.

  5. Why did the chicken cross the road? - Big Bernard was comin - bootiful!

  1. Best Bit The cosy start and the break-ish part with "you're the kind of person that I always wanted to be with...".

I am surprised at the negative reaction to this song. I love this song! I think it's right up there with Turn & Loveless.

The best bit for me is when the strings come in at the end. I love that part. As if the lyrics aren't heartwarming enough, the strings really do it for me.

The worst bit is that it has to end.

Why do I love this song? I love the acoustic guitars, the melody, Barney's vocals & I love the message.

Percentage? A freakin'90!

Oh yeah, about the lyrics, I do not think that Steve wrote this song. I once heard in an interview that Barney said that this song is the most personal song he has ever written. He didn't say what it was about but I think it is about his mother. She had celebral palsy plus he was an only child. It must have been extremely difficult to lose her. When you listen to the words, it sounds like a caregiver trying to comfort someone who is nearing the end. I think that's why the last words are so flippant. It's like a relief from all the heaviness. It's like a carpe diem moment.

Oh yeah, the chicken? He crossed the road because he was going to star in a Werner Herzog movie.
