Oh, I totally agree. His record at Everton was something like 4 Reds in 20 games. But Reds for bad tackles are one thing. Reds for punching, slapping and stamping are another.
And also, nobody is making out like Materazzi is a Demi-God who should have a red carpet from the centre circle to the opposition's six yard box laid out for him.

Why should Materazzi say something? It was a little bit Trash-Talk. We all know that. It was very stupid from Zidane.
You must also admire the way he fells.. I don't think anybody's head is strong enough to make somebody fall from behind...
It's hard to tell exactly where he gets him; But having once been punched in the solar plex (forgive my spelling) I can tell you that it does knock you down and leaves you seriously winded and unable to breath properly for awhile. I certainly would use it as a self defence move on someone if necssary as I know the result would be powerful.
he'll still be considered one of the greats in years to come. and kids growing up will always hear of him and see his skills. (Hampden v Leverkusen - a classic). this doesn't tarnish him at all in my eyes. He's had 15 red cards anyway in his career.

Materazzi was seen to hold Zidane's shirt on the edge of the penalty box in extra-time at which point Zidane said
"if you want my shirt so bad you can have it"
Materazzi responded
"I dont want your shirt you mother f..... you're a f...... old man"
As they jog away Zidane is seen to laugh at this and it is unclear how he responded due to him having his back to the TV camera
Materazzi then hit a volley of abuse
"you should've quit 2 years ago, you're a f...... has-been"
"mother f.....! your mum is a f...... muslim terrorist and you are to, f.... you old man f... you"
"old man, this arena is not for you anymore mother f....."
Zidane carries on jogging away

Fifa opens inquiry over MaterazziFifa has begun disciplinary proceedings against Marco Materazzi in light of his conduct in the World Cup final.
France skipper Zinedine Zidane was sent off in extra-time for headbutting Italy defender Materazzi in the chest.
Italy went on to win the title in a penalty shoot-out, but Zidane has since said he reacted to repeated provocation from his opponent.
Fifa has summoned both players to attend a hearing of its disciplinary committee on Thursday 20 July.
A decision is expected later that day.
Zidane said in an interview on French television that his actions were in response to repeated harsh insults from Materazzi about his mother and sister, but did not go into specifics.
"They were very hard words. You hear them once and you try to move away," he said.
"But then you hear them twice, and then a third time. I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions. I would rather have taken a blow to the face than hear that."
A Fifa statement confirmed: "The decision was taken following claims made by French player Zinedine Zidane."
Zidane has the right to make a written statement, which must be submitted by Tuesday 18 July.
Materazzi will then be given a copy of the statement so he can respond.
I think it's safe to conclude that Zidane and Materazzi are both assholes.
Off the pitch and in the real world, headbutting someone in the chest would get you charged with assault.
A slur, even a racial one, probably wouldn't get you into any legal trouble unless it's written, or said as a speaker to a public audience, as an employer to an employee, as a public figure to a private citizen, etc.
That's not to say that just because something isn't illegal makes it right, but that's the reality of life.
If everyone just traded barbs instead of punches, the world wouldn't be a great place, but probably a nicer place.

By getting himself sent off he presumably did exactly what Materazzi wanted. Surely this kind of provocation is just a sophisticated form of diving?
I don't understand why he ineffectually butted him in the chest though. If the guy said what he's reported to have said (i.e. racist remarks and insulting his mother), and given ZZ was going to get sent off either way, he might as well have been hung for a sheep as a lamb and given him the full Glasweigian kiss and broken his nose. Either rise above it and not give him the satisfaction (the best option) or if you're going to crash and burn make sure the fellow pays a high price for his gamesmanship and leaves the field on a stretcher.
If M said what some have said he said then he's more of a disgrace than ZZ and my opinion of Italy has dropped a few notches.

A racial slur could possibly get you into legal trouble, in this country anyway (incitement to racial hatred, behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace, participating in racist chanting at football matches, etc). More to the point it would probably get you thumped.
Like I wrote, making a racial slur to one person privately is not likely to get you into any legal trouble unless it is as an authority figure.
According to lip-readers, the only thing that Materazzi said that could be construed as racist was 'terrorist' and even that would be difficult to prove as truly being racist.
All this is a joke compared to the racism and even ethnic cleansing that some so-called democracies dismiss as being religious policies.
Making lewd insults about somebody else's mother or sister may be distasteful but not racist.
It probably accounts for 90% of basketball trash talk. 
A cardiologist is now saying that Zidane's headbutt could have caused a cardiac arrest. I wonder what colour of card you would get for that. 
I think Materazzi said "You like Depeche Mode and The Cure" to Zidane.
He would have got the same reaction from me
