Electronic

  1. 1988

Electronic formed as a collaboration between Bernard Sumner of New Order and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths. Sumner wanted to explore more programmed and dance-oriented music outside New Order's hiatus, while Marr was looking for a new creative direction. Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe contributed to the early sessions.

  2. 1989

Electronic released their debut single, Getting Away With It, on Factory Records. The song featured Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys on vocals and became the project's signature track, reaching #12 in the UK.

  3. 1990

Electronic continued working on their debut album at Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert's home studio. Ann Dudley of The Art of Noise contributed string arrangements to several tracks.

  4. April 1991

Get the Message was released as the second major Electronic single, reaching #8 in the UK. It became one of the project's best-known songs and was written entirely by Sumner and Marr.

  5. May 1991

Electronic released their self-titled debut album on Factory Records. The record mixed New Order-style electronics, Marr's guitar work, and polished pop songwriting, reaching #2 in the UK.

  6. 1992

Disappointed was released, again featuring Neil Tennant on vocals. The song appeared on the Cool World soundtrack and reached #6 in the UK, becoming one of the project's biggest singles.

  7. 1993–1994

Electronic worked with Karl Bartos, formerly of Kraftwerk, as a regular collaborator. His contribution of electronic textures and composition ideas shaped the direction of the second album.

  8. July 1996

Raise the Pressure was released as Electronic's second album. It arrived five years after the debut and included several songs co-written with Karl Bartos, with Bartos performing on several tracks.

  9. 1996–1997

Electronic released a run of singles from Raise the Pressure, including Forbidden City, For You, and Second Nature. Bernard Sumner also co-wrote and produced with New Order during this period.

  10. 1998

Electronic returned to the studio to work on a third album. Arthur Baker, who had previously worked with New Order on Confusion and Thieves Like Us, was brought in as co-producer.

  11. April 1999

Twisted Tenderness was released as Electronic's third and final studio album. It featured contributions from Jimi Goodwin of Doves and Denise Johnson, and marked a darker, more introspective direction than the debut.

  12. 1999

Electronic released Vivid and Second Nature as singles. With Bernard Sumner returning his attention to New Order, Electronic effectively came to an end as an active project.

  13. 2000

Electronic played their final shows. Sumner returned to New Order for their eventual 2001 comeback, while Marr continued with other collaborations and solo work.

  14. 2006

Get the Message: The Best of Electronic was released, collecting the group's singles and key album tracks. It helped define Electronic's legacy as one of the most successful New Order-related side projects.

  15. 2013

Electronic's debut album was reissued in expanded form, with remastered audio and bonus material including alternate versions and instrumentals.

  16. 2025

Raise the Pressure and Twisted Tenderness were announced for new vinyl editions through Rhino/Warner, underlining renewed interest in Electronic's full catalogue.
