Peter Hook & The Light

Peter Hook & The Light is Peter Hook's live band, formed in 2010 to perform the full catalogues of Joy Division and New Order. What began as a one-off anniversary show has become a long-running album-by-album journey through Hook's musical history.

Peter Hook & The Light

  1. 2007

After Peter Hook announced that he and Bernard Sumner were no longer working together, New Order entered a disputed split. Hook began looking for a new way to remain active as a musician and to engage with the Joy Division and New Order catalogue.

  2. 2010

Peter Hook & The Light formed around Peter Hook following his departure from New Order. The project began not as a new studio band, but as a live vehicle for revisiting the Joy Division and New Order catalogue. David Potts, his Monaco collaborator, joined as a core member.

  3. 18–19 May 2010

Peter Hook & The Light played Unknown Pleasures in full at FAC 251 in Manchester to mark the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis's death. What was originally planned as one commemorative show became two sold-out nights.

  4. Late 2010

The band began touring Unknown Pleasures internationally, establishing the album-in-full format as the core of their live offering. FreebassHook's other concurrent project — also released their album It's a Beautiful Life this year before quickly disbanding.

  5. 2011

The band continued touring Unknown Pleasures internationally and released 1102/2011, an EP featuring new versions of Joy Division songs with Rowetta on vocals, plus the unfinished Joy Division song Pictures in My Mind. New Order also announced their return this year without Hook.

  6. 18–19 May 2011

Peter Hook & The Light performed Closer in full at FAC 251 in Manchester. The project had now moved from a one-off tribute into a structured album-by-album journey.

  7. May 2012

The band performed So This Is Permanence at Christ Church in Macclesfield — presenting every Joy Division song in chronological order. The setting added particular resonance to the performance.

  8. 2012–2013

The band moved into the New Order catalogue, performing Movement and Power, Corruption & Lies in full. The shows marked the point where the project became not only a Joy Division live archive, but also Hook's version of New Order history.

  9. 2013

Martin Rebelski joined as keyboardist, bringing additional depth to the band's electronic arrangements. The touring schedule continued to expand globally.

  10. 2014–2015

The band continued through New Order's catalogue with Low-Life and Brotherhood. In 2015, Peter Hook & The Light performed So This Is Permanence again, this time presenting every Joy Division song chronologically across a full tour.

  11. 2016

Peter Hook & The Light launched the Substance tour, performing material from the Joy Division and New Order Substance compilations. This shifted the focus from studio albums to singles and B-sides.

  12. 2017

Hook's memoir Substance: Inside New Order was published, documenting his version of New Order's history in detail. The touring continued alongside the book's release.

  13. 2018–2019

The band moved further into New Order's later catalogue, performing Technique and Republic in full at UK shows, then taking the shows to North America.

  14. 2019

Joy Division Orchestrated shows were presented, combining Peter Hook & The Light with a full orchestra for performances of Joy Division material.

  15. 2020

COVID-19 halted touring globally. The band used the period to plan future albums-in-full and remained active through online broadcasts and archival releases.

  16. 2022

Joy Division: A Celebration was released as a live album, documenting the band's performances of Joy Division material. The band resumed touring.

  17. 2023–2024

Peter Hook & The Light launched a major Substance world tour for 2024, taking the project through Australia, New Zealand, North America, the UK and Ireland.

  18. 2025–2026

Peter Hook & The Light moved on to Get Ready, performing the 2001 New Order album in full across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America. Get Ready: Live at O2 Victoria Warehouse Manchester was released as a live album.
