The Other Two

The Other Two was the side project of [Stephen Morris](/band/member/stephen-morris) and [Gillian Gilbert](/band/member/gillian-gilbert), formed during [New Order](/bands/new-order)'s early 1990s hiatus. The duo released two albums of dance-influenced pop and an ongoing catalogue of television soundtrack work.

The Other Two

  1. Late 1980s

While New Order were still active around the Technique period, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert began doing more soundtrack work, including music connected to the BBC series Making Out. That television work became the seed of The Other Two.

  2. September 1990

Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert began using the FAC 251 studio in Manchester — Factory Records' in-house facility — to develop their debut material as The Other Two, building on a stockpile of home recordings made at their studio near Macclesfield.

  3. October 1991

The debut single Tasty Fish was released on Factory Records. It introduced The Other Two as a more direct pop outlet for Morris and Gilbert, with Gillian taking lead vocals.

  4. 1991

The Other Two began recording The Other Two & You at their home studio in Macclesfield, building on the Tasty Fish single and a growing stock of dance-pop material.

  5. 1992

Work on the debut album stalled as Factory Records ran into financial difficulties. Sample clearance issues and the label's collapse meant The Other Two & You could not be released as planned.

  6. 1993

After New Order signed with London Records following Factory Records' collapse, The Other Two & You was finally released. The album arrived two years later than expected but was well received by fans of New Order's electronic pop direction.

  7. 1994

Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert married, formalising a personal and creative partnership that had begun when Gillian joined New Order in 1980.

  8. Mid-1990s

The Other Two remained mostly a studio and soundtrack project. Morris and Gilbert continued composing for television, with credits around shows including Making Out, Cracker, Common as Muck, Cold Feet and America's Most Wanted.

  9. 1995

Innocence was released as a single in 1995, previewing material being recorded for the second album. The track built on the sound established by the debut.

  10. 1999–2001

The second album, Super Highways, was released in 1999 by London Records. It featured guest vocals from Melanie Williams of Sub Sub on selected tracks, including You Can Fly and the title track. The album was supported by a small promotional campaign before Morris and Gilbert returned their focus to New Order.

  11. 2010

The Other Two & You was reissued by LTM with bonus remixes and new artwork, helping revive interest in the project among New Order fans.

  12. 2014

The Other Two & You received renewed attention as New Order collectors began documenting the band's side-project catalogue more systematically.

  13. 2022

Morris and Gilbert remixed LoneLady's (There Is) No Logic as The Other Two, showing the project still existed as an occasional outlet.

  14. 2024

Rhino announced a new reissue of The Other Two & You, including a previously unreleased version of Innocence by Love To Infinity.

  15. 2025

The Other Two's catalogue received renewed attention as part of wider New Order archival activity, with both albums now widely available in new editions.
